Ryan Zimmerman breaks hamate bone in left wrist

If you're not familiar, this is a particularly bad injury for a baseball player. These can rob a player of power for extended periods.

Weird. They definitely downplay any seriousness if it's there, splitter. The article makes it sound like he's going to be back to full strength in 4 weeks! What an odd injury - he must be right about it being partially cracked and then this latest injury just being the 'straw that broke the camel's back.'

Someone help me out, is this not the same injury that knocked Brad Nelson from top prospect to "what happened to that guy?"

 

I've heard a lot of players talk about how this one takes a long time to get all the way back from.

Yes, same injury Nelson had.

 

Just to back you up, Splitter, I also have heard its a pretty bad injury - it could effect him into 2009, or maybe have an effect on his entire career.

I guess it all depends on how serious the hamate is hurt/broken and the player because Hank Conger injured his in 2006 after the draft and needed surgery on it and he came back and had a nice year in the Midwest League in 2007.

that's the same injury Griffey Jr. had in the mid-90's in Seattle, making one of his great catches against the padding in the kingdome when he jammed his wrist/glove

I was under the impression that once broken, the hamate bone is removed because it doesnt serve much purpose. Yet it does seem to zap the power for a year or more.
