Nashville Earns Win with Series Opening Comeback - Cameron and Dalbec Go Back-to-Back Fueling 'W'
In his first game back on the Sounds roster since re-signing on a new Minor League deal, LHP Bruce Zimmermann was truly back to pitching like he hadn't really left the starting rotation for any period of time. 6.0 IP of 6 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 3 ER work. Fresh off an All-Star break and not having pitched in a bit, surely Zimmermann was on a pitch limit or an up-and-down limit: 73 pitches thrown with 50 strikes landing. As I've said on numerous occasions over the past two months: Zimmermann has turned into an extremely dependable veteran starter within this Sounds pitching staff. I'm grateful he's back.
Things weren't as smooth for newly rehabbing LHP Rob Zastryzny in his 1.0 IP of 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 WP, 1 HB, 1 K, 1 HR, 4 ER work. Thankfully, however, he ended strong via a pop up to C Jorge Alfaro and a strike out swinging. Let's hope he knocked the rust off. We all know he's been fantastic since being re-acquired pitching out of the Brewers bullpen.
Three Quick Strikes:
1) The Daz Cameron Nashville Sounds season of 2025 will be studied. He now has seven straight games with an RBI since rejoining the Sounds post-DFA by the Brewers back on July 9th. All he has done since arriving in Nashville, and the Brewers organization, is mash. His penchant for the dramatic is also palpable:
Man, I do not say this lightly: the original acquisition of Cameron absolutely turned the Sounds season around. He continues to be must watch baseball television in a Sounds jersey.
2) Bobby Dalbec hit the back-to-back line drive dart over the left field wall to tie the game at seven runs. 1B Ernesto Martinez Jr. hit a deep double to the right center field warning track splitting the gap and sending in the go-ahead runs with his fifth double of his season.
We all know it has been a tough climb back for EMJ since suffering the odd thumb injury some months back - hey, he was promoted to the eight spot in the line-up 🥺! But, as a favorite within the Brewers organization and on this board, we are all pulling for him to finish his season strong.
3) Multi-hit nights for the meat of the Sounds line-up for the aforementioned LF Daz Cameron, 3B Bobby Dalbec, and newly mentioned RF Jared Oliva but I'm going to give the salute to RHP Will Childers who calmed things down after Zastryzny lost the Sounds brief lead. Childers pitched his first scoreless inning at Triple-A Nashville with a 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K inning of work. He also picked up his first win at the Triple-A level. Congratulations, Will! Keep grinding!
With the victory, the Sounds improved to 12-10 on their second half. They remain 5.5 GB of International League leading Scranton/Wilkes/Barre (Yankees).
Final: Biloxi 5, Rocket City (Angels) 2
Patient Approach, Cornielle's Strong Start Leads Shuckers to Win - Offense Sets Season-High with 11 Walks
On any other evening - an evening not fresh off a prolonged All Star break - RHP Alexander Cornielle is given the opportunity to pitch into the fifth inning. This was not any other evening. Cornielle managed quite an impactful 4.0 IP of 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K work. Throughout the four innings of work, Cornielle's defense only saw three flyouts and one groundout. We all know this young man is prone to elevated pitch counts and walk issues (42 BB in 83 2/3 IP in 2025), but this is about as good as it gets for the talented 23-year-old hurler. And, given that, I think we all know even when it's going quite well with present-form Alexander Cornielle it is often not all that smooth and easy:
Even though I continue to look for further levels to his game and his arsenal - more precision and more consistency - I certainly know Cornielle has the tools in his bag to have nights like this where he's averaging nearly two punch outs per frame. Given the reduced workload, Cornielle did not factor into the final decision. Given the end results, we are grateful for his efforts.
Three Quick Strikes:
1) RHP Abdiel Mendoza continues to find more and more comfort in his Shuckers bullpen role. As a matter of fact, the shift to the bullpen has entirely turned Mendoza's season around despite some early hiccups in the May transition. After a very good June pitching 11 2/3 innings out of the pen, Mendoza has pitched 9 1/3 innings in July without surrendering a single run. Over that span he's allowing a mere 0.188 BAA with a fantastic 0.75 WHIP. Tonight's 1.0 IP of 2 H, 1 HB, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 R work extended that scoreless streak while also crediting him with his fourth win of his season (4-3). With the loss of RHP's Will Childers and Justin Yeager to Triple-A, the Shuckers bullpen is going to need continued consistent shutdown work from Mendoza to help stabilize the greater multiple-inning depth.
2) It was an oddly productive and unproductive day of offense for talented CF Luis Lara. The good: 0-for-1, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB. The bad: CS second base and picked off third base. Lara has actually improved his base-running efforts (he's successfully stealing just over 85 % of his attempts in 2025 to date whereas he was caught 23.72% of the time in 2024 during 59 attempts) in 2025 so we'll toss tonight up to the random off-night on the base paths we might see in the greater scope of the massively long baseball season. It's too easy to forget the absurdly talented Lara is 20 years old until late November. Here he is drawing three walks when thrust into a lead-off role with the prolonged absence of Luke Adams. Given the immensely impactful defense he offers ranging the centerfield grass, a 0.265 season BA with a 0.716 OPS is doing us just fine at this juncture of the season.
3) Old Shuckers friend RHP Will Childers grabbed his first win at Triple-A Nashville. Current Shuckers relief man RHP Nick Merkel earned his first Double-A Save as a Shucker. Congratulations, 'Large Mammal'! The final line will read 1.0 IP of 1 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SV work. But, a little help from his friends at third base - the third base bag and Ethan Murray - certainly didn't hurt matters:
As you know I like to say: the box score rarely tells the full tale. That's some kind of first out for Merkel!
With the game one victory, the Shuckers improved to 10-12 in their second half. They remain 3.5 GB of first place Pensacola (Marlins). We also know the Shuckers won the first half so their second half record is relatively meaningless. Let's simply hope they stay healthy and make a meaningful run in the Southern League post-season.
Final: Quad Cities (Royals) 4, Wisconsin 3
Timber Rattlers Suffer a Heart-Breaking Loss in Quad Cities - Two Runs on Five Walks in Nightmare Ninth Fuels Bandits Comeback
LHP Sam Garcia bounced back in a big way with his 5.0 IP of 3 H, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 R work. A breath of fresh air for the Timber Rattlers pitching staff at large in what has been a struggle-filled second half.
Unfortunately, Garcia's bullpen could not hold the brief 2-0 lead the bats earned in the sixth inning despite an overall struggle-filled 2-for-18 night with RISP. When your lead-off batter manages a 3-for-5, 1 2B effort (oh, hey there, 2B Jadher Areinamo. You again with your penchant for being quite good at baseball), it's fairly painful when your two and three hitters - the typically reliable 1B Blake Burke and SS Eduardo Garcia - go a combined 0-for-8 with 2 BB and 4 K.
Despite the inability of the T-Rats to take advantage of multiple scoring opportunities, we still tip our caps to RF Luiyin Alastre (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 2B), DH Hedbert Perez (1-for-2, 2 R, 3 BB), C Blayberg Diaz (1-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B), and LF Yoshwar Garcia (1-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 SB).
Speaking of Yhoswar Garcia, he just continues to make highlight reel plays all over the outfield grass. It doesn't matter where you place that young man, he will likely track down an improbable catch:
In the end, despite the inefficiencies at the dish, this game came down to the ongoing struggles of RHP Jeferson Figueroa out of the Rattlers bullpen in 2025. Tonight was no different. 1 1/3 IP of 5 BB, 2 K, 2 ER work. He walked the bases full in the ninth frame. With two outs, he walked in the tying run. Ahead 0-1 and 1-2, he then walked in the losing run. It was as ugly as that five-walk inning looked. I saw one questionable called ball throughout those five free passes.
The Timber Rattlers will look to regroup for game two - a common theme throughout this second half to date. With the loss, they fell to 7-18 and are smack dab in last place 8.5 GB first place Beloit. In ugly team slumps like this, we look for the individual efforts. They are there despite the main skill of finding ways to lose at present.
Final: Carolina 8, Kannapolis 2
The Mudcats came home to Five County Stadium. Pulled off the 8-2 game win pulling away late and gained a game on second place Fredericksburg opening a 2.0 G lead atop their division. With the Brewers falling 1-0 during a Seattle ump show, it sure was nice to get this one in the books a bit earlier.
RHP's Ethan Dorchies and Jadyn Dubanewicz swapped piggy-back roles in this one. Dorchies grabbed the start and went 4.0 IP of 0 H, 1 BB, 3 K, 0 R work. He threw 50 pitches with 31 strikes. Dubanewicz immediately lost the no-no after a RF Jose Anderson misplay in right field put the first man on base, but he still managed a respectable 4.0 IP of 7 (scattered) H, 0 BB, 4 K, and 2 R (1 Earned) work. You have to love the way these young 2024 high school draft picks throw strikes. Dubanewicz picked up the win and improved to 4-1 overall with Carolina.
Three Quick Strikes:
1) It is 2B Josh Adamczewski's Mudcats world and we're just watching it. How good is it to have his bat and steady glove back in the Mudcats line-up? Oh, it's really really good. 2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HR, 1 2B. Two words come to mind every time I think of a healthy Josh Adamczewski playing baseball: dangerous and steady. He can hurt you in so many ways at the plate. He rarely ever misplays a ball in the field. In 128 Carolina League PA's in 2025 he is batting 0.359 sporting a ridiculous 1.012 OPS. Welcome back, Josh!
2) Seriously, how massive is it to have Adamczewski back in the Mudcats line-up? In so many ways, he is the glue. Literally everyone around him in the line up benefits: CF Braylon Payne (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K), 2B Jesus Made (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB(, and SS Luis Peña (1-for-4, 1 R, 2RBI, 1 2B). Let us not forget: the Mudcats began unraveling just after Adamczewski's ill-fated injury departure back on May 2nd. The Muddies then lost C Marco Dinges to promotion (and, sadly, we all lost him to IL with the hamstring injury shortly thereafter - so many sighs). We certainly won't see Dinges back in Zebulon. Let's enjoy Josh in the meat of the batting order for as long as we see him raking in Low-A.
3) 3B Filippo Di Turi is pressing as he tries to turn around his month-long slump in July. He managed to knock in a run and score a run of his own in a 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI night at the dish but he also punched out three times. We saw a slight downturn in offensive production in June but it wasn't significant amidst what was a fantastic season until that point. The 31 strikeouts to 10 walks stood out, however - those were elevated discrepancies beyond the norms of his season. In July, Di Turi has simply been in a funk. 0.146 BA with a 0.426 OPS in nearly 50 PA's. Last season, Di Turi suffered a significant downturn in the final month plus. Given this rough July, one could argue no other player on the Mudcats roster needs a strong August more than Di Turi. Let's put the ghost of 2024 far back in the rear view mirror, young man!
With the victory, the Mudcats improved to 16-7 in their second half. As mentioned above, they lead second place Fredericksburg by 2.0 G.
Final: ACL Athletics 17, ACL Brewers 8
Box Score/Game Log
This one was a hit fest - 15 Athletics hits to 14 Brewers hits. The Brewers pitching staff was feeling charitable with their nine walks. The Brewers defense was also feeling charitable with its three errors. C Luis Corobo was feeling charitable with a passed ball (his third) and a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt (his sixth error of his season).
Hats off to the Athletics, however, for executing a masterful 10-for-23 with RISP. None of those runs were walked in. None of those runs scored via wild pitches. There was an error or two involved, yes, but the vast majority of the Athletics runs came via the bat. Not a sole Brewers pitcher had a scoreless tally.
We do see RHP Hayden Robinson did not allow a single hit yet his ongoing struggles in his return from TJ continued: 2 1/3 IP of 0 H, 5 BB, 1 HB, 2 WP, 1 K. It's currently an unsightly slog for Robinson, unfortunately, as he struggles to find 2024's superb pre-injury form.
Every single Brewers hitter earned at least one hit. We see muti-hit performances from lead-off RF Handelfry Encarnacion (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 CS), 2B Demetrio Nadal (2-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K), DH Kevin Garcia (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 2B), and SS Kevin Ereu (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 K, 1 3B).
The offense as a whole managed a 3-for-11 mark with RISP. With the loss the ACL Brewers fell to 30-29 overall. They remain in third place in the ACL Central division.
Final: DSL Padres Gold 10, DSL Brewers Blue 7 - Final/10-innings (completing a game from 7/18)
Box Score/Game Log
The DSL Brewers Blue tied this game up after a five-run seventh inning but they fell in a mildly chaotic tenth inning in prototypical DSL fashion. Perhaps, RHP Lenin Mendez's two-out 10th inning meltdown was an homage to the original July 18th meltdown of RHP Luis Velasquez. If we recall, Velazquez walked eight batters in a mere 2 1/3 IP in addition to two wild pitches, a balk and a pick-off error. I do believe this would qualify as a blow-up outing. Velasquez allowed zero hits and, yet, in the end he was credited with five earned runs.
Fast forwarding to today, Mendez had allowed Manfred's Man to score in the tenth inning but he had two outs with a man on third base. He followed with a walk, a walk, a Johanderson Tarazona passed ball, a walk, a walk, and a hit batter. Trailing 10-6 at that point, Mendez was mercifully pulled.
1B Sharlisson De La Rosa followed with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the 10th but that was all the Brewers Blue would muster before falling 10-7.
So how did the Brewers Blue manage to tie things in the seventh inning? A 2B Joanjel Saez RBI-double, back-to-back two-out RBI singles from CF Brailyn Antunez and 3B/SS Moises Polanco, and an RBI wild pitch. I do wonder aloud how many runs score via wild pitch in a DSL season. I would be entirely unsurprised if that number is well into the triple digits if we tallied the total League-wide. Actually, that may be a near certainty.😅
Done, Antunez, and Polanco had a really solid combined effort from the lead-off through three spot, respectively, in the line-up: 6-for-14, 3 R, 4 RBI, and 1 SB. With the loss, the DSL Brewers Blue temporarily fell to 19-15 overall. They would gain things back in rapid-fashion, however, winning game two of the double-header.
Final: DSL Brewers Blue 8, DSL Padres Gold 5 - Final/7-innings
Box Score/Game Log
An eight-run surge in the fourth and sixth innings fueled a Brewers Blue comeback over the Padres Gold in game two of today's doubleheader.
RF Carlos Done once again had multiple knocks - this included the go-ahead homer to left field to open a three-run sixth frame for the Brewers Blue. This was Done's third long ball of his summer - he also tacked on an earlier double in a 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B, 1 HR game. Just like that, Done is up to a very respectable 0.245 BA with a 0.759 OPS over 119 PA's. With a 23.5 K% and a 10.92 BB % Done is certainly doing enough to stay on all our radars after he missed all of the 2024 DSL season due to an undisclosed injury.
In that same go-ahead game-clinching sixth frame, Antunez and Polanco once again joined Done impacting the game with back-to-back walks. Antunez also managed to swipe his 11th base before Polanco took first base. And, in a near moment of baseball déjà vu, it was 1B Sharlisson De La Rosa who knocked both home with a double - his second late-inning RBI double in two games. De La Rosa missed all of June on the IL but he is certainly finding ways to pop in his nine games since he returned on July 5th - four doubles already in that limited action. Keep an eye on this Dominican 17-year-old as this DSL season comes into the home stretch.
Tips of the proverbial cap are due to the multiple hit efforts of SS Leonard Rijo (3-for-4, 1 R) and C Kegnnalex Seijas (2-for-3, 1 RBI). Is it me, or have the DSL Brewers catching batteries come out smoking hot this week?
On the pitching side of things we see the combined efforts of RHP Jean Rodriguez (2.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 HB, 3 K, 1 W) and second-year RHP Jhosep Ospino (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 SV), who sealed the victory and secured the two-game split.
With the victory, the DSL Brewers Blue moved right back to five games over 0.500 at 20-15 overall as they look to sneak there way into the back end of the DSL post-season Wild Card picture.
Final: DSL Brewers Gold 9, DSL Reds 7
Box Score/Game Log
A 2-1 game after the fourth frame in favor of the Brewers Gold turned into a back-and-forth affair but the Brewers Gold never trailed despite the Reds pulling within 7-6 after the eighth inning.
1B Matthew Moses certainly earned my 'Player of the Game' nod with his 3-for-4, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 2B, 1 HR outing. That is a heck of a day for Moses.
Second-year player 2B Juan Martinez, in the lead-off spot, gave his team a much needed 3-for-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 3B, 1 SB day. We all know the Gold have been up-and-down all season long but Martinez is absolutely doing his part. He is now sporting a very healthy 0.289 BA with a 0.946 OPS over 143 PA's. Martinez also sports a very very impressive 23 BB-to-17 K BB:K ratio. He is doing everything we could ask for a second-year player who already popped routinely in his 2024 debut season despite fading some by summer's end. Also, can we talk about Martinez hitting seven triples across 36 games?
Better yet, how about 1B/C Jonathan Rangel hitting six triples across just 27 games? Rangel, I know shocking, popped yet again with a 1-for-2, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 3B day at the dish. Now, can we keep working on that defense behind the dish young man? Two throwing errors and a pickoff error on his day. Patience is the way here: this is a new position for Rangel as we all surely know by now. It's nice to see Rangel get recognized once again by the Brewers PD:
Despite the victory, it certainly wasn't all rosy for the DSL Brewers Gold. Their pitching staff combined to give out 11 free passes while throwing a whopping 8 wild pitches. My goodness. Five of these eight wild tosses came from the arm of third-year Brewers DSL'er RHP Linbel Jimenez during his 1 2/3 IP of 2 H, 4 BB, 5 WP, 3 K.
RHP Saul Sanchez saved the game, literally, when he induced the game-ending fly out to end it with the bases juiced. That was Sanchez's first Save of his summer.
Also of note, RF Pedro Tovar reached base three times; walked twice; scored a run; and stole a base. 3B Roman Donato and SS Christian Montilla didn't light up the scorebaord but they appear to have taken long AB's while keeping the pressure on. With the victory, the DSL Brewers Gold improved to 17-19 on their season. A record good enough for first place in their DSL Central division. Parity. You have to...errr ummm...love it!
I'll be back at it tomorrow to give you the full report once again. No DSL squads will hit the evening desert air. We will have the Mudcats and RHP Melvin Hernandez pitching in the early morning hours (my time, at least). The ACL Brewers will face the ACL Reds in the second matinee game - albeit three hours after the Mudcats.
In the evening, we will see RHP Ryan Birchard battling his walk demons for the Timber Rattlers; RHP KC Hunt will be fighting his season-long inconsistencies for the Shuckers; and we don't know who will take the bump for the Sounds but they will face the Knight's RHP Noah Syndergaard. Yes, that Noah Syndergaard. He has acquitted himself quite well for the Knights since the White Sox signed him to a Minor League contract back on June 23rd. I'm kind of eager to see what he has in his bag at age 32 and after multiple IL stints in recent years.
As always, thanks for reading and thanks for supporting Brewers Minor League baseball.
