  1. This may have been asked before, but why isn't Bryson getting a chance to start at Helena?
  2. Colby is clearly at the top of the pyramid of minor league baseball expertise on this site in my mind. He's one of many fantastic informants who dwell here, but I just can't imagine the site (especially the minor league forum) without him. Thank you.
  3. I would say, at 26 years old, Marino Salas needs to step up to triple A and show us he can adjust. He's done very well, but much of his success has been against younger competition. You could make the same case for Corey Thurman, and, possibly Steve Hammond. I'd like to see Wahpepah and Stanczyk move up to take some of these spots. How long do Inman and Escobar stay in Florida?
  4. I'm thinking something along the line of what we saw from Wayne Franklin. I don't expect more, maybe less. He's really only had one above average season: single A where he was older and more experienced than most of his opponents. His numbers in college were solid, but nothing too impressive. And in his professional career, he has never averaged 6 or more innings per start (including this year). The complete game this year was his first as a pro. He does seem to be having some success against lefty opponents; maybe he would thrive as a situational guy...I think it's about time to consider that, or a trade.
  5. Congrats to Luis Pena on his promotion. It was well deserved...let's hope he finds continued success at Huntsville.
  6. There are quite a few throughout the organization who could make strong cases for promotions, but I think it's too early for that. With Nashville experimenting with Rottino behind the plate I would guess that Palsmo stays put for most of the year even if he keeps this pace up. I, for one, hope Parra is the next one up to AAA. I am of the impression that his AA stint is serving solely for him to get his feet under him again. And I think he's established that.
  7. Too bad...we missed an Inman vs. Outman matchup by one night.
  8. From what I can tell, this was Jackson's first complete game as a pro. It looks like he's still looking for his first shutout, but this line (in 89 pitches no less!) is very impressive. Nix and Salome up, Jones and Braun down. I guess you can't have it all.
  9. I'm amazed that someone with such a slight build (5'11", 170lb) is able to approach 100mph with his fastball. I believe a lot of scouts shied away because of his size. I got to see him once at UW and, as expected, he dominated. I love watching him pitch. delivery
  10. Ahh...the first Power 50 of the year, nothing like it! Thanks for putting it together. Some tough love for Hammond, Moss and Nelson but it's so nice to work your way down the list and make cases for virtually each player to be at or above where they're listed.
  11. Are Welch, Pena and Wahpepah strictly relievers now? Not that I'm complaining about what I'm seeing, but just wondering if anyone knows what brought these changes on...
  12. Braun liked stealing third so much yesterday, he thought he'd try it again. But, not so lucky. He's got happy feet lately, five of his six steal attempts in the last seven games.
  13. Don't see many pitchers sporting shades... could that be the problem?
  14. Gameday shows Graffanino's flyout to left landing in the bleachers...I'm guessing that didn't really happen...just a hunch. But maybe Bay has extraordinary leaping abilities.
  15. Looks like the Stars are matched up against one of the Dodgers' two top lefty prospects, Scott Elbert. Hopefully the days off will be of benefit...
  16. I suppose it harkens back to the questions of how do you define a prospect? and what makes one guy's success more important, or relevant to his prospect status, than another guy's? But why is it that we are still as high on him as we are while we see more signs of life from guys like Dillard, Hammond and even Parra, injuries and all? I suppose I am suggesting, in a way, that we right him off. Not as a failure or a complete disappointment but as someone deserving of the kinds of expectations given to a future spot starter/middle reliever, more than a future middle of the rotation type pitcher. If he had broken the big leagues in '99 or '00, he may well have been a decent no.3 starter for this team (relative to our alternatives). But with my, and I think most's, idea of what the Brewers' standards should be for the next five or so years, I don't see him deserving more than what Capellan or Sarfate might be given. Do you?
  17. I know it's Spring, symbol of new life, new hope and new beginnings, but Spring dumped 6-8" of snow on Wisconsin yesterday, so I feel justified in putting the optimism on hold a little longer. I think it's time we stop referring to our favorite AAA lefty starter as Zach-Jack and call him what he is...Zach Jackson, 6'-5" over-hyped lefty prospect who joined the organization with the Lyle Overbay trade. A guy who had moderate success as a college starter and has had 3/4 of a season of success in the minors, where he dominated younger, less experienced hitters in single A Dunedin. But when matched up against players closer to his own age and experience level, he has shown little promise. I think we all expect more from a top ten (currently #6 on the Power 50) prospect on the brink of joining the big league club, than a 4-6 record in 18 starts with a 4.12 era and a 1.4 whip at AAA. Many excused last years struggles citing he was 'working on his mechanics' or some variation thereof. But can you really buy that rationale for more than a handfull of lackluster starts? I wanted to believe as much as anyone, but more and more I'm seeing a Kyle Peterson type prospect who is riding high on the success he saw when it should have been expected of him rather than showing the improvement necessary to be a legitimate, upper level prospect.
  18. Why would the Marlins choose Henricus, a guy who's never pitched above A ball, to start for them tonight when they could give Wes Obermueller the nod? That isn't entirely joking and rhetorical, either. I mean I know the Marlins are suddenly and surprisingly short on upper level starters, but why does a club chose to dig so deep in their system for a spot starter?
  19. In my limited ability to follow the Brewers' minor league players (i.e. Brewerfan, box scores and the occassional game audio) I usually find myself following a pattern of investigation each day. In years past I've had a number of players who have stuck out in my memory, for whatever reason, and I look to see how they've done first before anything else. I imagine that this applies to more folks than just me, so I thought I'd make a little list and see if anyone else would like to share their 'players to watch'. (I'll leave the most visible - Gallardo, Braun and, I guess, Inman - out) 1. Angel Salome - catcher first has been the case for many years...Kade Johnson, Jason Belcher, Lou Palmisano... 2. Cole Gillespie - I'm probably letting his NCAA and rookie league performances skew my opinion, but I expect him to move up quickly. 3. Steve Garrison - Lefties Hammond and Parra, too, but Garrison had a very, very respectable year at West Virgina for a 19-year-old and I feel bad I didn't notice. 4. Yohannis Perez - good story, don't know what to expect. 5. Lorenzo Cain - but some days Brent Brewer and some days Fermaint.
  20. How does BA's prospect handbook compare to Prospectus 2007 and Sickel's Baseball Prospect Book? Or is it even an apples to apples comparison? Are there other resources out there worth cosidering? Just curious where people's allegiances lie. Thanks.
  21. Nice to see Aquino showing some control in the Dominican winter league. IP 9.1 ERA 1.93 BA .179 H 5 BB 3 K 9 3 saves, 3 wins and a loss in seven games
  22. I'd like to add my appreciation to the long list...the Power 50 has been my primary source for navigating the brewers' minor league box scores for years. I'd agree that your rankings, Toby, along with the daily link reports are entirely responsible for my minor league fixation. Not that knowing about a 17 year old from the dominican who'd pitching in the rookie leagues is unhealthy, or anything, but it won't be the topic of any dinner conversations with family or friends. Whereas it is, thanks to you and the other moderators, vital information to the folks who pay attention to this site. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif By the way, I'm curious how you decided to place Y. Perez where you did. I have to say I am surprised at how high he landed.
  23. I'd much rather subsidize part of Clark's salary for one of their bullpen arms like Corpas, Ramirez, or maybe even Affeldt. I could see Jeff Baker making some sense, if Mench is moved. More sense than Barmes, anyway.
  24. Washington? San Diego (LF)? Florida (CF)? St. Louis? Pittsburgh? Cincinnati? Colorado? Cleveland? Oakland? Texas? Minnesota? might feel like they have a hole in their outfield...might not. I think JB is right, though. You have a somewhat long list of risk/reward free agents with Floyd being the highest and the others less (until recently that list included Luis Gonzalez who I, for one, am surprised was the first to go). What Mench and Jenkins and Clark offer is durability at the possible expense of the high end upside. I'd say there is a market there, but more FA cards need to fall and more injury questions need to be answered.
  25. Forgive me, but I'd much rather see a deal done for Kuo than for Penny. That said, I think Jenkins for Penny straight up is not unreasonable.
