I agree with this 100%. As rough as Patrick was in September, Senzatela was far worse from July through September. That's the only thing I don't get. -
Right - and it seems like his approach is to do whatever he thinks will motivate each particular player. So he benches Pratt where he might not do that to someone else. I don't love that approach but some successful coaches have used it. And it seems to work for Murphy.

He admitted last night that he didn't really see what happened when Pratt was leaving the box, which was odd. And today, after seeing the replay, he said maybe he overrreacted by pulling him. Just ... not great. Seems like he just made a knee jerk move out of anger. But they do have a great record and it seems like his overall approach is pretty effective. Plus I agree this definitely was not the difference in the game,

I'm just guessing, but I bet the source on this is not the Brewers, Brewers generally do a very good job of keeping things in-house until a trade/signing actually happens and they have nothing to gain by leaking it. More likely Donaldson's agent leaked something to drum up more interest in his client and it could be an exaggeration. So I don't think this getting out necessarily says anything about how the Brewers feel about BA. Although ... his lack of PT lately probably tells us all we need to know. I still don't want Donaldson tho. There's a video circulating of his baserunning errors form the last couple years and it's ... not good. -
Shildt also admitted to staring into the Brewers' dugout as he was checking on Molina, so my guess is that whatever was said (seemingly by Counsell) was in response to that and directed at him.

I don't know why the Orioles would need to release updates? All they have to do is say "David, this is what the Dodgers are offering, can you beat that?" There's really no purpose for them to be so cryptic about it. I think being cryptic serves a purpose. If you don't know exactly what the others are offering, you're motivated to come with your best offer. It's a lot like buying a house where there are multiple offers. Except here, the Orioles could also leak things to the press that are exaggerated or untrue. I have no idea if they did that, but I can see where there could be a lot of gamesmanship.

Honest questions -- why would Boras be interested in leaking this info and driving up the return? (Maybe somehow it makes his client appear more valuable?). Also, why would the Orioles be keeping Boras or Machado up to date, minute-by-minute, on who is in the "lead."

Re: Donaldson -- He was great 2-3 years ago but now it seems he can't stay on the field. I don't think they can afford to take a chance on a guy who may not play much in the second half, even if they had somewhere to play him. He did play a few games at SS last year, but esp. with his calf issues this year I don't think that's where we want him playing.

My hunch is the Yankees were never serious and that was leaked/invented by the O's (or maybe the Yankees) to create more perceived demand. NYY usually does not trade for "rentals," at least not the big ones. Plus, Machado does not want to play 3B and NY already has a SS.

This was over 10 years ago, and I may be confusing this board with the Brewers.com board, but there were a couple of posters named Ragamuffin and Fareastbrewer that were just ... not nice.

I wouldn't call 2004-2005 hopeless. There was a lot of hope with many good upcoming players. When Melvin took over there was a very good start to a franchise in place. He did well for the first few years but has depleted the talent in the franchise over time. Sorry I was wrong on my dates. DM took over at the end of 2002, a 56-win year, which to me equals hopeless. About the only positives at that time were Ben Sheets, Richie Sexson, and Miller Park (although they had drafted Fielder by then). DM did a great job turning around that roster.

I'm 44. I know bad baseball. Doug Melvin is not the worst GM the Brewers could have but I've seen too many clubs build winners with less payroll than the Brewers to sit still and watch this guy continue to run the show. The game has passed him by What specifically has "passed him by?" In other words, what cutting edge things are these other successful teams with lower payroll doing that he is not? Bottom line to me is Melvin is an experienced GM who has built playoff teams with a relatively small payroll, and he actually wants to be here. I'm just saying there aren't many guys with those qualities, so I'm not too quick to run him out of town.

I really don't get the Doug Melvin hate. Do some of you not remember what this franchise was like from 1993-2005? Hopeless. Not saying we should be satisfied, and I'm not saying he should stick around forever, but anyone who thinks he is incompetent must be too young to remember the bad old days. Just saying, be careful what you wish for.
