  1. The Beloit Snappers need a new logo. That Turtle is a disgrace! I have a shirt that says "Fear the Turtle," but it's only cool because the Turtle is so stupid.
  2. FTC, I think you hit it right on the head. I've always figured that it had a lot to do with the fact that it wasn't the Native Americans themselves who named the teams, and initially most of the mascots and associated images/cheers were quite insensitive (for example, the 'Tomahawk Chop' or 'Chief Wahoo!'). It amounted to your identity being taken by outsiders, treated solely as a way to make money. That's pretty offensive. Sometimes I wonder what the deal is with the Fighting Irish. I'm Irish in heritage, and I went to ND for grad school. I think the issue there is that it was Irish Catholics who chose to use the name, and the "fighting" is used to symbolize toughness in the face of adversity which the Irish really felt. The fact that it might be understood differently (speaking to the stereotype of the drunken, violent Irishman) by outsiders only adds to the pride "the Irish" take in the mascot. It's as though only an insider knows the true meaning - in this case it's the cooptation and reimagination of a stereotype. Clearly, in the case of teams like the Cleveland Indians or the Washington Redskins there were not Native Americans on the inside when the teams were named, and it's the history and identity of a people being used without their consent. However, I think it's unfair to say that every team with a mascot referencing Native Americans was named with less than pure intentions. This is especially the case at the college level, where often the intent is to honor a region's history. Nonetheless, if the naming occurs without the participation of the native tribe, an honorable intention might still be interpreted as the misappropriation of sacred tradition and history. You can understand why that would be offensive. All that said, the Stanford Cardinal just doesn't make any sense. Your name is a color but your symbol is a tree? Too postmodern for me.
  3. I couldn't agree more with the previous 3 posts. I watched the 4 runs in the 6th last night in silence thinking that this is how the rest of the season is going to be, I was too depressed to be mad about it. No pitching left and it's May 3rd. Too many spots in the order you hate to see up when a hit is needed. From the initial Gallardo injury, him staying in the game and the Crew rallying, then to find out Gallardo is gone and watching back to back to back dingers, that was a draining 24 hours to be a Brewer fan.
  4. Rollie Fingers '82, Paul Molitor '80, Pete Vukovich '83 (& '84), Larry Hisle '79 (basically ended his career). Robert Brooks '96, Dorsey Levens '98, Reggie White '96 (miraculously healed) Just a few off the top of my head. What about Edgar Bennett during preseason 97.
  5. I saw the Padres broadcast a few times this week, Matt Vasgurgen was a good play by play guy
  6. Yes, but sample size is a bit of an issue. League averages: BA = .246, OPS = .655 Brewers: BA = .200, OPS = .600 (only 21 PA/15 AB) I knew I'd get a good answer here at BF.net
  7. Do the Brewers leave the bases loaded more than the average team?
  8. He gave up 4 bb's and 0 hits, wow that's a quick hook from Lou. Think that we can get him for Turnbow? This is what I get for starting a Cub on my fantasy team.
  9. My initial reaction was to wonder what the heck Prince was doing, but it was a messed up play all around. Like others have said I'd chalk it up to hustle in a rivalry game. Nothing dirty or stupid about it.
  10. Actually, that makes a lot of sense. I've always wondered how he could be so successful stealing when he gets on but rarely beat out infield hits.
  11. Rickie Weeks can fly. He goes 1st to 3rd as well as just about anyone in baseball There is a difference between running bases well and being fast. Very true. But I think if you asked around baseball people will tell you that Rickie is very fast. You have to remember that he had to wait and see if Fukudome was going to catch that ball and Dale still tried to score him from 1st. Fukudome has a very good arm Like I said, I don't think he's slow by any means, and I only heard the play on the radio. I'm really referring to other plays. How often does he beat out an infield hit? My impression is that he's usually a step short where as speed guys (like Hart) beat them out.

  13. I'm happy I DVR'd this one. Time to head home and fast forward to the 9th.
  14. I think there is a misconception that Rickie is fast, and it the coaches believe it too. He's not slow, but he's not a speed guy really.
  15. Yeah, I think I'll check back in 10 minutes.
  16. Fun being a Brewer fan this year, ain't it.
  17. Time to break out in a big way Braun. Please, Please, Please.
  18. I'm having flashbacks to the A. Ramirez game last year. Turnabout is fairplay. Let's get 'em boys.
  19. Is anyone else starting to worry about Gagne yet?
  20. I've always been afraid of his powers. Use them for good Craig.
