  1. Anybody know what hotel the Brewers are staying at in SF?
  2. Having sports scores running by ticker-tape-style on the bottom of the screan on channels besides ESPN and Fox Sports. Especially ones that I hate watching but my girlfriend likes watching (HGTV and stuff like that).
  3. "I know we have to play to the platoon advantages or whatever, but I would much, much rather have Durham and Counsell in there than Hall and Weeks. Stupid Philly and their stupid lefty pitchers." Hamels throws with his left arm, but his splits look like a righty's. He's better against right-handed hitters (671 OPS) than he is against left-handed hitters (742OPS). Durham and Counsell should be in.

  5. McClung. We've thrown him into just about every possible scenario and he's come out on top. He's done everything asked of him. That big red man had the surprise great performance of the season. Torres. Was a dependable closer for a big chunk of the season when we didn't think we had a dependable closer. 3TO. Was a huge spark during our most productive moth or so of the season.
  6. I do know about it and I will continue to knock it as a fitness tool marketed towards the general population. It may be fun, but it isn't any better for fitness, generally speaking, than anything else that perpetuates the myth that light exercise for 20 minutes a couple times a week (or whatever) is enough. It usually isn't. And it's silly to think the only options are Ironman training or playing with a video game. There's certainly middle ground (and actually, Ironman training is far from ideal too imho (limited and time consuming), but that's a different topic). Nothing I advocated is too difficult for the average person, and like I said, it's just what I do, and it's just my opinion.
  7. "Dannyjnoonan, you clearly know what you are talking about, but not everyone can use food strictly as fuel. Not everyone can make the same sacrifices or even enjoy making them. For me to change my diet and eat as fuel is not a big deal because I have never really enjoyed eating. I don't criticise people for not eating the way I do, and you shouldn't critisise the way someone else works out just because its something that you are good at. Small steps are better than no steps at all." I don't think I was talking down to anyone or anything. I just layed out what I do. Jason, the guy asking for advice is 29 and not fat, more stockey. Wii fit may be great for very overweight people or older people, but I don't think it would be the best use of Jason's time, unless he's doing it for fun. As for looking at food as fuel, I know it's hard and I said as much. I still eat pizza and drink beer on weekends, so I'd never knock someone that can't fully embrace that mentality. I can't either, it's just a goal to shoot for.
  8. Wow, chuck wii fit under the bad column cause this guy says so. It may not be THE way but it is A way. Now, see..I would throw the rice thing under bad advice. There happens to be a few people in Asia that eat a crapload of rice everyday. Seems to be working out ok for them. Just my two cents tough guy. White rice is a simple carb that raises the blood sugar level quickly, contains more calories, fewer vitamins and less fiber than many other choices for carbs (vegetables, fruits and whole grains). They are broken down quickly in the body and will have you feeling hungry in a short period of time. At the risk of generalizing, there are fewer weight problems in Asian countries because of portion control and balanced meals (usually fish/meat and vegetables with a moderate amount of rice or noodles). If you want to eat identically to some Asian culture and play with your nintendo, you might be alright. You might be at higher risk of diabetes, or dental problems, but you might not. Go ahead. I'll stick to eating veggies for my carbs--I know what's in rice. It takes different strokes to move the world though.
  9. Lots of good advice here (And bad, wii fit? Really?). This will probably be somewhat repetitive, but here's my 2 cents (for the record, I'm 29; 5'10"; 175lbs; 28 pull-ups; sub-5:30 mile; 285lb deadlift; sub-12 hour Ironman, and I used to be overweight). 1) The most important thing is diet. Anyone that says "I can eat whatever I want because I do X every day" has a naturally fast metabolism too. There's a lot of disagreement between a lot of experts about what to eat. Whatever diet you choose, you have to run a calorie deficit to lose weight so portion size is important. Overall, I think the average person eats way too many carbs, especially simple carbs and not enough protein and "good fat." So here's how you fix that: 1a) Cut sugar down, if not out, of your diet. Absolutely no soda, JUICE (seriously!), candy, donuts, pastries, cookies etc. 1b) Cut simple carbs down, if not out, of your diet. A good rule of thumb for this is anything white is not worth eathing. That means rice, pasta, bread (unless it's whole grain bread) etc. etc. 1c) Eat more protein. Chicken is probably the best because the easiest meal in the world is a peice of chicken and a vegetable. Fish is great too. Red meat is too, but has some other issues. Eggs too. Every meal should have a bunch of protein in it. 1d) Eat more unsaturated fats. Almonds are great, as are just about any nuts. Almond butter and "natural" peanut butter too but you have to watch the sugar content (see rule 1a). Avacado is good too. 1e) Most, if not all, carbs should come from vegetables. 1f) 5 meals is better than 3 meals. Try to think of food as "fuel" rather than "tasty." It's hard, but if you work at it, it gets easier. 1g) Drink a lot of water. In fact, if you're trying to lose weight, drink very little of anything else. Milk is good if you're trying to build muscle too, but won't help you lose weight if you're not lifting heavy. Coffee and Tea are good too. Other than that, almost any other thing that people drink is bad for weight loss. 1e) If you're going to drink alcohol, that's not ideal, but most of us do it. Light beer is better than regular, but the bigger thing is to not eat too many (or any) other carbohydrates that night. 2) The second most important thing is exercise. Your exercise routine should do all of the following: 2a) Be intense. Do not take up walking. The higher the intensity of your workout, the better use of your time. 2b) Do varied forms of exercise. Don't just run or bike or play basketball. Unless you're trying to get better at one of them in particular, do all of them. 2c) Lift weights. And don't use any of those machines at the gym that have cables and pulleys on them unless you are injured or are a body builder. If you want functional fitness, the best thing you can do in the weightroom is powerlifting (squats, deadlifts, presses) and, if you're feeling motivated and have someone to teach you, olympic lifts (clean, jerk, snatch). Bodyweight stuff (gymnastics) is great too--pull-ups, dips, push-ups, muscle-ups, burpees etc. 2d) Ignore the popular myth that "cardio" has to be seperate from "lifting." Pick two exercises and do them alternating at a high intensity level (like, for example, deadlift 185lbs 10 time, then do 15 push-ups, then repeat this pattern for 10 rounds as fast as you can (safely, without losing your form of course). Then do some similar pattern with different exercises the next day. Don't do the same one for at least a month. For more on this, here's an awesome gym in town: crossfitmilwaukee.com (I have no association with it except that I'm a member and really believe in the crossfit methodology.) Hope this helps.
  10. Here is the ERA+ for our relievers: 1. Solomon Torres - 171 2. Brian Shouse (Lefties Only!) - 186 3. Mitch Stetter - 156 4. Mark Difelice - 110 5. Carlos Villanueva - 99 6.McLung - 95 7. Mota - 98 8. Riske - 94 9. Dillard - 80 10. Gagne - 70 I'd say Villanueva is a good call for the 8th. Gagne and Dillard should never be allowed to touch a baseball ever again. Ever.

  12. "A healthy, vegetarian athlete who can probably out-run, out-swim, out-bike, and out-lift 99% of the people on this message board" And who is nowhere near the best meat-eaters in any of those sports. Especially lifting.

  14. This would make room for the return of Jeff Cirillo, no?
  15. -Major League and Mr. 3000? -White Sox "home games" at County Stadium? You could add a bit about the Indians' home games here last year too. -The Northwoods League? -Tailgating? -Mascots, history of Bernie Brewer, sausage races etc.?
  16. I predict that Seth McClung will amaze as all tonight.
  17. I totally agree with this. I might move Hardy ahead of Fielder for the right price. In fact, I think we should trade Fielder very soon. I just don't see him getting better so we should move while his trade value is still super high. Maybe we could get a good starting pitcher. The loss of his lefthandedness would be the biggest problem.
  18. Totally. If it weren't for his lefthandedness I'd advocate trying to trade him while he still has value for a young stud starting pitcher. Given his weight and his diet, the odds of him getting worse seem to be greater than the odds of him getting better. I'd guess it's hard to (1) lose weight, and/or (2) crush homers, on a potato-based diet.
  19. I know there's a 7 run lead and all, but this guys is basically our worst pitcher according to any possible measurement of pitching ability there is. And there's no such thing as "magic closer powers."
  20. Alright! Every Brewer position player has a batting average in the 200s (or 300s) now. Nice work Weeks!
  21. I think McClung will do alright. He's pitching better than he ever has. If you take out that one game against the Reds, his stats are pretty sweet, and I seem to recall that he was taking one for the team in that game. He was originally a starter and should be able to go six innings as well or better than villy. He strikes a lot of guys out. I think he at least deserves a shot.
  22. "I think both sides are jumping to ridiculous conclusions and assumptions." I think assuming or concluding that there are only two sides is ridiculous. "There is not one person here who has any idea what is going on in Prince's head, stomach or on his dinner plate - and frankly, it's none of your damn business." I hope you said exactly the same thing in every thread about steroids. If what a player on the team is doing to make himself better/worse isn't our business, why does this message board exist? "I frankly find a lot of the discussion offensive in terms of how you're willing to make judgments on a man for his lifestyle choice." I find if offensive that you find that offensive. "It's incredibly naive to think that you have any idea why Prince made this change." He told us why he made the change.
  23. Observing a correlation leads to theorizing. Which is exactly where we are now. NOBODY in this thread has said it is a FACT that Prince's lack of a home-run is due to his lack of meat/fish/fowl.
  24. "You assuming that changing his diet is the cause." No I not. I suggesting it might be part of the cause. "but the sausage races reminds of his ethical stance..." There is a causal connection between diet and things that affect hitting. That basic statement is a fact. "My problem with this entire thread is that people are saying that dietary changes are the cause of the "power outage". Please... we don't know." Most of us are saying that his dietary change MIGHT be PART of the cause of his "power outage" but we don know. What we do know is that he did hit lots of home-runs when he was eating meat. "My assumptions that he's doing the right things are just as out there as you telling me it's his lifestyle change." Where did I say it was definitely his lifestyle change? "Or maybe he's just not comfortable in the 3 hole." That MIGHT be PART of the problem too. "Who knows.." Not you. Or me. But I never made any affirmative, concrete statements. "I'm just defending the fact that being a vegetarian (I am not one) isn't the cause, and with a properly managed diet he won't lose power." That's a fact? But a few words ago you said, and I quote: "Who knows.." You know what else we don't know? That he's properly managing his diet to replace the lost protein, not to mention all the stuff that you can't replace without meat. "And poeple have this wild assumption on what being a vegetarian is." Vegetarian: person that does not eat meat, fish or fowl. "And correlation doesn't mean causation, people are just expecting Prince to be hitting a bomb at every at bat. " No it doesn't. But correlation deffinately doesn't mean "not causation" as you seem to think.
  25. Sure I am.. but not as much as people saying that Prince isn't taking care of himself, and that his power outage is directly linked to him not eating meat. What's more outrageous? As pointed out previously in the thread, we don't know details of his diet. I assume he's doing it right (After all it's his job) and people are assuming he isn't. The fact is.. he's only 1 HR behind last year so far.. and I feel it's more he's not seeing the ball. Nice mat zzzman! It's a huge assumption that just because he is only one home-run behind last year's number means that there is definitely nothing wrong. That's a much bigger assumption than saying that the major lifestyle change he made might have some effect on him.
