  1. Did Maddon really do that!?! wow... I mean, was he thinking Burnes was headed back out there or something?
  2. I hope I'm wrong, but this feels too tenuous - the Brewers should actually be up by 3-4 right now. Hoping the fact the Cubs are already into their bullpen is a good sign for the Brewers scoring more, because I don't think 3 will be enough.
  3. Edwards has been terrible for a few weeks now - he's almost guaranteed at least one walk or wild pitch per inning
  4. I take it that means CC forgot they Brewers have like 47 guys in the pen available to use. Instead we get a scuffling Miley pitching to Bryant here with the bases loaded...great tie game, please don't give Rizzo a tater
  5. please tell me there are multiple relievers warming up and ready to go in the Brewers' pen right now...otherwise this is likely going to be a crooked number
  6. Reds will be decent next year if they pick up some pitching. I feel like people have been saying that about the Reds ever since Adam Dunn and Austin Kearns were youngsters on that team.
  7. It's supposed to be a nats home game and they are going to be in the midst of a divisional road trip between ATL and philly themselves...if at all possible the alternate venue should be either the city they are already planning to be in on thursday, or if weather is that big of a threat it should be the next closest available park where weather looks good. After the crap Zambrano no hitter against the Astros in miller park due to hurricane troubles, I want no part of being a convenient cub road game. I frankly could care less about schedule problems for teams with outdoor stadiums... next time build a roof.
  8. I'm hanging the pick-6 squarely on McCarthy. They needed to get out of the half at 10-0, not call a timeout and force your backup QB to make something happen with 50 seconds left. That was absolutely terrible coaching. 1st half timeout management is something McCarthy is especially horrible at - it seems like there's an emphasis on preserving timeouts for most of the first half to be able to use them to try and get a score right before half. That's great and all, but he has no concept on whether to actually use them or just get to the half with the score as-is based on the flow of the game. I don't know how often the Packers score or punt with about 2.5 minutes left in the first half, then proceed to try and burn timeouts on defense to try and get the ball back only to prolong an opponent's drive that results in points for them when they would have otherwise played it closer to the vest to avoid giving the ball back to #12 anyways. Just because you have 'em doesn't make it the best strategy to use all of you timeouts, Mike.
  9. I'm the furthest thing from a cub fan, but it's bs they waited that long to call the game before rescheduling. Should have been called this morning, actually. Also, I hope scherzer makes that thursday start on normal rest!
  10. Cubs nats delayed to start again...at this point they've almost committed to getting the game in today, which bodes well for the brewers tomorrow.
  11. If Wilson hadn't served up a meatball to Harper, they'd be just fine with it. Plus, they even got another at bat to try and even the game up before the game was delayed.
  12. I was thinking of that, however based on the standings there's also a reasonable chance of needing an extra game to decide who wins the division if it winds up tied, with the loser playing in the 10/2 wild card game. Particularly with the Cards still having a remote chance at winning the division. I would hope MLB realizes that and opts to force the makeup game (it tomorrow is rained out) to occur during a mutual off day. Neither options are good scenarios, but there are enough NL teams in contention for various division/wild card spots that I would think MLB wants to keep that 10/1 day open as long as possible for game 163's rather than push a game 162 into October when they have the earlier option of this Thursday.
  13. Regardless of how it gets managed, when you basically have to play everyday for a month straight due to early season rainouts your pen is going to suffer at the end of it. That's what the Cubs are dealing with now. Not getting Morrow back really has gassed the group of arms the Cubs rely on to lock down games. They've been able to slug their way to a few wins and get some solid starting pitching overall during this stretch, otherwise the division race would already be a toss-up between the Cubs and Brewers at this point. Just not having a day off where a team doesn't have to even show up to the park and think about picking up a baseball makes a huge difference. I see your point but I'm not sure I'm buying that theory given that rosters have been expanded for over a week now. That's true, but the extra arms that they brought up have basically pitched in only two games - the 11-1 Brewer blowout and today's 10-3 drubbing against Scherzer. The other games in September have largely been close wins or losses for the Cubs. Heck, even the 8-1 and 7-1 Cub wins against the Phils saw Wilson, Chavez, Rosario, and Kintzler pitching in them.
  14. They actually might just call tonight's game after 8 innings - rain starting to build again and it looks like if they can't get back on the field in the next hour, they won't be able to for a long while. Tomorrow looks bleak for them to even get their game started. It would be pretty cool for MLB to schedule a possible makeup game for this coming Thursday - both the Cubs and Nats are supposed to be off, and it could line up nicely with Scherzer's next turn in the rotation if the Nats so choose.

  16. I just looked at their remaining schedule - talk about a tough road... 13 of their remaining 20 come against the Dodgers, Braves, Brewers, and Cubs. They've been hot overall, no question - but actually are scuffling in Sept at 2-5 thus far. Cubs up 5-3 and getting late, but 9 outs is a long way to go... Edit, 5-4 now, and by the looks of it Maddon is well on his way to having to empty out the whole reliable portion of his bullpen again to crawl out of there with a W.
  17. Cubs got all of 0.1 ip out of their game 1 starter of today's doubleheader....
  18. Lester almost assuredly gets bumped up earlier in the brewer series, since he only pitched 1 inning yesterday. Also, they are starting Jaime Garcia against scherzer in game 1 today, which will likely be a bullpen mob game. Hamels gets the nationals bullpen mob for game 2. Weather looks like they will get both games in, but still soggy - and sketchy at best conditions for Sunday's game. Edit: Game 1 start delayed due to rain, they should have a window to try and cram a doubleheader in on a very soggy field, but by around 10pm it's supposed to rain like crazy pretty much through tomorrow. Both of those teams are supposed to be off on the 13th...It would be hilarious if the Cubs had to play a wednesday night game at wrigley (8pm central start time) against the Brewers, then fly to DC for a makeup game on the 13th, then fly home to play a 2:20 friday afternoon game against the Reds. Part of me truly feels this is karma for some of their game cancellations and schedule adjustments due to "inclement weather" last year.
  19. bumping this thread, because I always enjoying looking at these discussions largely held well before the season started. Fangraphs' final preseason record projections had the Braves at 73 wins, Nats at 92, Brewers at 79, Dbacks at 80, Rockies at 79, A's at 77, Mariners at 78, Blue Jays at 85, Red Sox at 92, Orioles 76, Rays 76. I'll grant them that historically great runs like the Red Sox are on are basically impossible to project preseason. However, when they are significantly off on projected records of 1/3 to 1/2 of MLB teams, it puts into perspective how difficult it is to try and forecast baseball - which IMO is why it's the greatest sport to be a fan of. Here's to hoping Fangraphs adds a "Brewer Bias" correction factor to their projections next year, which should just add about 12 wins to whatever flawed system they use spits out in march 2019.
  20. Cubs Nats game suspended tonight after getting through roughly 1.5 innings. Game will be continued tomorrow starting at 2 as part of a doubleheader. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs stick with Lester in this game tomorrow or if they try to turn it into a heavy bullpen game to ensure he pitches in the Brewers series. I guess he could also pitch the Wednesday brewer game on short rest, too.
  21. Picked up a game on the cards and a half game on the cubs, who are currently still in the top of the 2nd in DC. Weekend forecast has to be keeping them at the park tonight - not much hope of getting a doubleheader in without delays tomorrow or sunday.
  22. It might be irrational and the numbers may say otherwise against lhp, but I'd like someone to kidnap Perez a few days in a row so he stays out of the starting lineup a little while.
  23. And another topic, cubs nats delayed in the top of the 2nd in a game lester started. Looking at the radar, I wonder why the heck they started the game at all...
  24. Cubs nats tonight is either going to be a very late start or called due to storms...rain also in the forecast both Saturday and Sunday - would be very nice for them to have a looong weekend there before flying home to face the brewers monday. A cancelled game tonight means Lester won't be facing the brewers, and would most likely force them to have one of those games be a bullpen game or chatwood start (if he is healthy). Hoping mlb doesn't cancel one of their games with the stipulation of it being made up if necessary at the end of the season - keep them having to grind
