  1. People who do not maneuver around cars that are waiting for oncoming traffic to clear as they make a left hand turn. I'm not sure what you mean here. I think a good share of my traffic complaints have to do with left turns. People are supposed to turn into the closest available lane, and many don't. And as Patrick mentions, drivers need to consider the fact that the green arrow doesn't last forever. Drivers should get into the intersection unless there's a reason not to. Another left turn annoyance is when cars continue to turn after their arrow has ended. I'm not talking borderline, but rather, well after the arrow has gone away. Freeway drivers who can't decide what speed they'd like bother me too. Recently, I got close to a car in the right lane who was going a little under the 65mph limit. Fair enough; I moved to the left lane. As I passed him, he must have decided that he could go faster, making it tougher for me to go by him. When I eventually got ahead of him and moved back to the right lane, suddenly he was in the left lane passing me. After that, he moved back to the right lane and started driving below the speed limit again, so it was rinse and repeat.
  2. TDS, my phone company and Internet provider, does very well with customer service and technical support of my Internet connection. But when the twain meet, i.e. their web site, all suckitude breaks loose. Once in a blue moon, I have to do something on their web site. Generally, it's when they make a change to their automatic payment system and the old way can't be migrated to the new way. Anyhoo, for the rare times that I've needed to log into their site, I've almost always had to call and get help from someone in order to do it. Since I started using 1Password recently, I figured I'd sign into their site and store the login information so I'd be prepared the next time I'd have to do it. It wasn't easy. I couldn't log in at all in Chrome and Firefox. The guru said that those browsers don't work well with their site. The funny thing is that their e-mail uses Gmail; you'd think that Chrome would be the best choice. The dude recommended IE, but being on a Mac, I don't have that. Safari ended up working. They really need to do better in this regard. Everything else about the company has been good for me.
  3. As a non-written example, there were broadcasters who never got the pronunciation of "Burnitz" right, and he was far from obscure. I heard Jeromy's name mispronounced on the air fairly recently.
  4. I wish I knew even just a little bit about web design, but I do not. "Design" isn't an issue per se. The back end functionality of the main site is what's tough to work with. It makes changing content much tougher than just pasting in some code. On the board end, we have a lot more flexibility, and we don't have to handle things with anywhere as much care.
  5. That range extender looks cool. I like the fact that it offers wall outlet placement.
  6. Hopefully, the new one does the trick. If it doesn't, a more central location on the main floor might help. But if a different location is obtrusive or obnoxious looking, or if your office computer needs to be hard wired, it wouldn't be that pricey to add a unit to extend the network.
  7. Cisco/Linksys still seems to be the standard. I'm betting that a newer router with newer technology might do the trick. Where do you have it placed? The AT&T installer told us that upstairs is better than downstairs, but it looks like you're covered there. It's possible that you may need a second unit to extend your network's reach. I'm not sure what to recommend for that.
  8. If you're using Office 2008, I wonder if it'll run if you simply drag the app out of the Applications folder on the old machine and drop it into the Applications folder on the new one… I just reread your message. I thought you bought a new Mac rather than upgrading the old one. Obviously, if it won't work, it won't work. I'd be pleased if Microsoft offered its Office apps in the App Store. I'm not holding my breath, though. I haven't used it much, but Apple's Keynote has gotten very good reviews as a PowerPoint alternative. Lore has it that Steve Jobs liked presentations but didn't give a hoot about spreadsheets, which would be why Keynote is good and Numbers isn't. Airplay requires newer hardware than 2008 computers offer. I don't recall the specifics. Airdrop (similar name, totally different function) is another feature that requires newer hardware. It's a really simple way to transfer files between two Macs, regardless of the wireless network they happen to be on. There's a way to enable this on older Macs, but when one does that, the feature becomes restricted to Macs sharing the same network. I just enable file sharing and wirelessly transfer files that way. That method has worked forever.

  11. Some of the free office suites require Java. I'd hate to have to install it. If you're using Office 2008, I wonder if it'll run if you simply drag the app out of the Applications folder on the old machine and drop it into the Applications folder on the new one. If I'm remembering correctly, 2008's installer is PowerPC but the Office apps themsleves are Intel. If you're running an older version of Office, you'd be completely out of luck. Another option is Microsoft's Office 365. It gives you Office for a fairly reasonable monthly fee and allows you to install the current version on up to 5 Macs. You'd also have some cloud services included. By the way, Apple's Numbers app is a lame replacement for Excel. IMO, Pages replaces Word nicely, though.
  12. Just to elaborate, this was a side effect of an anti-spam measure. You should remove the compatibility view from IE10. That makes IE10 function as if it's IE7, which is something you don't really want to do unless you absolutely have to. Thanks for reporting this.
  13. I'm curious as to why this forum would need compatibility view. That's something we should probably look into. I'm going to move this topic over to Issues & Events. That's a better fit for topics pertaining to the operation of the board as moderators will make it a point to check that forum when they see that it has new messages.
  14. I actually don't understand what getting the Sports Pak gets you with respect to Brewer games. The Sports package will help you if you live in an area with multiple home teams and your home team isn't included with your basic subscription. Iowa's a good example because the entire state is home territory for six teams (Cardinals, Royals, Cubs, White Sox, Twins, Brewers). Let's say that based on where you live, DirecTV gives you Cardinals games. The Sports package would give you the other five home teams.
  15. I'm sure that the writers are getting raked in the comments area on JSOnline.
  16. Time Warner recently told me that my dad could reduce his monthly bill if he added phone and Internet. I told them that he needs to stick with a traditional landline. He doesn't need to be losing his phone service because the electricity goes out or the Internet gets wonky. Before that, AT&T tried to get him to move his television service to U-Verse. We told them, "no Extra Innings, no U-Verse. " In short, re-examining prices, getting another digital cable box into the house, and possibly moving the Internet to Time Warner might be in order. But the TV needs to stay with Time Warner and the phone needs to stick with a traditional landline.
  17. When I read about tempo on Wikipedia I initially assumed that BPM meant beats per minute. Then as I posted, I saw this: A look back indicates that BPM does indeed mean beats per minute, and yes, the song would then time to a minute and a half. Something needs to be made clearer in that article. I did an in-page search for Andante moderato and scrolled up for the first available explanation, and of course, read the wrong thing. Maybe the sentence I quoted needs to go like this:
  18. Let's quit the "stupid song" debate before it inevitably gets out of hand. If you want to talk about ways it's performed, carry on.
  19. I looked up the non-sporting-event sheet music. The suggested tempo is "Andante moderato," which is about 70 bars per minute. I count 35 bars in the verse, which lands us at about half a minute.
  20. pitchleague, what do the notes look like for the word "free"?
  21. The military bands do it "right." It's brisk and doesn't drag at all.
  22. Reconciling the confusion between lcbj68c and pitchleague, on DirecTV, if you have access to a particular broadcast, it'll pop up on any channel number that's showing it without regard to package. As an example, Extra Innings doesn't entitle me to Brewers broadcasts. However, since I get the broadcast anyway, I can watch it on the Extra Innings channel number if I want. The 'stache, if your provider doesn't give you the Astros, Extra Innings or MLB.TV won't help because the Astros are still in-market. You'd get every other team via the out-of-market packages, though. You might have another option for picking up the Astros, though.
  23. I ran into a similar situation at Pick 'n Save about a year ago… except that in addition, the customer also needed several price checks. The person next in line was so frustrated that he gave up, leaving all of his items sitting on the conveyer belt. This was the only checkout open. The really annoying part of this was that there was a manager running around doing nothing about the situation. He could have called another checker or manned a checkout line himself. Making this more frustrating was that I was just out of the oral surgeon's office. I had an hour to get pain medication, get some appropriate food, get home, eat food, and take medication before the Novocaine wore off.
  24. I had reason to look at Windows 7's built-in help file for wireless networking over the weekend. It started out with a paragraph that said something like "Imagine yourself sitting on a couch or in bed…". In other words, it was a flowery pitch for WiFi. That''s a bunch of unnecessary drivel that does nothing but get in the way when you're looking for the answer to a question. Besides, Windows 7 was released in 2009. WiFi had penetrated the market well beyond anything that needed "imagining" years before that.
