  1. The old vent thread has now been euthanized, and this one has been placed in the Designated Threads List.
  2. It's in the Designated Threads List, which is stickied at the top of this forum.
  3. I was intentionally vague because I didn't know if you considered your source to be private or not. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think the ballot has always been predetermined. But, since names are now being eliminated, I'd think it pretty much needs to be at this point. The list isn't that big. You'll see some of the same names on the list yearly. Others are rotated. Voters include media types and several Brewer employees. I believe current Walk of Fame members get to vote, too. The Brewers never announce the voters' names until the results have been announced. That's because they don't want peons like us personally lobbying the voters. I got that tidbit from a Brewer executive three or four years ago.
  4. You'd think you could count on Mench to have that awareness, and it wouldn't have been like letting Estrada hit in that situation, but players tend to be what they are. That brings up another Yost issue. He has his players do what he thinks they should do vs. what they actually can do. Having Brady Clark frequently attempt to steal (2006) might be the poster child example. Last year's example would have been using Turnbow on back to back days.
  5. More recently, I believe Machado had been sprung and had played in a Venezuelan league.
  6. Even though I don't like some things that are considered conventional wisdom, I'm not going to rip on Nedly for doing what 27-29 other managers are doing.
  7. That would come from the fact that Joe was a full-timer in the minors. PECOTA dishes out a lot of funky PA projections. My gut says that if the gurus messed around with the PA part of the formula, they'd mess up something more important.
  8. I haven't seen this year's voter list, but in the past, I've been concerned when I've seen their names. Too many of them don't strike me as people who are known for doing their homework. Not including Lew Burdette just reinforces that thought. I'm glad to see George Scott getting a bit more recognition, though. I'm not saying he should necessarily be on the Walk, but I'd hate to see him dumped from the ballot. Speaking of Lew, his first name is spelled wrong in the list above, and I know for a fact that it's not Jamie's doing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif It'd have been interesting if he'd have been chosen, and the Brewers got all the way to the plaque stage with the name spelled "Lou".
  9. I propose plastic pocket liners and slide rules.
  10. I agree with you giffted1. A single substitution doesn't massively improve a team's chances of winning a game. But in my mind, the explanation for that decision triggered a laundry list of decisions that showed a definite pattern, most notably Ned's reliance on super-duper small samples. Pretending that the small 18 AB sample was actually a meaningful one, Geoff had a .500 SLG percentage against Dempster. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and the team down by a run in the bottom of the ninth, that looks pretty nice. Geoff also had four walks against him. While a walk would have likely been a negative outcome in that situation, as a fallback, it still would have beaten an out.
  11. I don't think there's a totally reliable formula for determining managerial effectiveness, either, Geno. But there seem to be models that are usable as long as their flaws are understood and taken into account. And while most of these models seem to indicate that the vast majority of managers fall so close that they're not making much difference, and while our statheads have impressed that fact upon us over the years, the same statheads started showing rather objectively that the numbers offered evidence that Nedly was problematic. The reason I give our resident statheads credit for doing a good job with this is that they weren't trying to claim that Nedly singlehandedly lost a dozen games for the 2007 Brewers. They were saying it was more in the 3 or 4 loss range and impressing that statistically, 3 or 4 losses attributed to the manager is very, very high. While most stats have some kind of flaw, any stat developed with any degree of care is probably going to do a decent job when it comes to identifying the extremes. It appears that Nedly fell into that category last year.
  12. Where does 'Fielder being terrible' fit in? As far as the batting order goes, I feel most of it makes little difference, so I try not to get excited. But batting Estrada fifth for as long as Nedly did was blatantly bizarre. I concur with you completely, though, about the idea of Kendall batting second. There are plenty of better options. Unfortunately, Jason looks like just the type of guy Ned would like to stick in that spot.
  13. Yeah, Geno, it was that Mench-Dempster non-move that officially made me fall of the fence into the Yost-nay camp. And like you, I wan't happy with the votes of confidence. That put Attanasio and Melvin into the position of either not being able to fire Yost or firing Yost and looking like fools At that point, as much as I wanted Ned gone, I'd have been much more concerned about a rudderless ship in ownership and the front office had a post-season firing occurred. Getting back to adambr2's thread title--"Is 2008 Yost's last shot?"--I think so. While Ned was given votes of confidence during the season, his option wasn't picked up, either. I think that says a lot.
