  1. From what I understand, that's totally and completely valid. But this isn't supposed to happen too often. If it isn't a regular occurrence, take an Alka Seltzer, which has a regular dose of aspirin along with some nice bubblies for your tummy. In addition, lots of water can't hurt.
  2. I totally enjoy going into a retail place and finding out that it has a pet or two. For instance, there's a garden and pet supply store in Wausau where you can find a cat or two anxiously awaiting a tummy rub while sitting on top of bags of pet food. And at a True Value Hardware store in Franklin, there's a dog hanging out with her tennis ball bugging customers to toss it for her to fetch. If you hear her bark, it's because a customer isn't tossing the ball. And if you can't find her, the cashier will get on the microphone and say, "Shadow to the checkout," and she'll show up. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  3. If a guy's PA total is too low, the zeros will take care of the issue on their own. For the sake of simplicity, I'll use OBP in this extreme example. A player with 250 PA is on base 150 times, giving him a .600 OBP. Add in 252 more PA along with no more times on base, the player's OBP drops to .298. That isn't going to win any title.
  4. I kind of explained it two posts above. I couldn't tell you what's worse, though: my klutzy explanation or mlb's complicated one. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'll try it with numbers. A hitter generally needs 502 plate appearances to win the batting, slugging, or OBP titles. If a guy has 480 plate appearances, the rules allow for 22 plate appearances to be added while adding zero hits (for batting), zero total bases (for slugging), or zero times on base (for OBP). If the revised BA, SLG pct., or OBP still beats the next best qualifying hitter, the guy with 'not enough' plate appearances will win the title.
  5. As Ennder said, luck can cause hits to fluctuate, meaning WHIP can also fluctuate based on luck. The biggest problem I see is that hits are all weighed the same. A single counts the same as a homer. Still, I find WHIP useful as something to glance at along with some of the other conveniently available stats. If WHIP and ERA corroborate each other, for instance, chances are you're seeing something more accurate than if they don't. The bottom line is that I'll look at WHIP, but handle it with care and give it some breathing room. You can't say with certainty, for instance, that a pitcher with a 1.15 WHIP is having a better season than one with a 1.30 WHIP. You're probably on safe ground if you're looking at WHIPs of 1.15 vs. 1.55, though.
  6. He didn't have enough plate appearances. He wins because the rule allows the missing plate appearances to be added with zeros as their resulting outcomes. After doing that, it turns out that his 'lowered' SLG pct. is still ahead of the next highest qualifier. The same rule also applies to the BA and OBP titles. As this topic is very specific, it certainly deserves its own thread--unless it's covered elsewhere and neither of us noticed. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif (Moderator note: this thread is not the place to cover Ryan's defense, a move to the outfield, etc.)
  7. Doggie downers?
  8. Printers. Not very many companies make them, meaning that if you get pissed at one of them, your options have narrowed considerably. I'm actually pissed at two companies right now. After buying several of their printers, I decided I'd boycott HP this time around because they wanted to charge $34.99 for out-of-warranty support to answer a yes-no question. And their chat, which actually is free for out-of-warranty questions, is Windows-only. This company bought out Compaq, which had a chat that worked fine on a Mac. I know this because I troubleshot a Compaq computer via the Mac several times. I love the irony of that. Given that HP would have had both chats available, you'd think they'd have chosen the one that worked for all their customers, especially since printers work on multiple OSes. Lexmark, the brand I purchased because of the HP episode, has me pissed, but less pissed. Brand new printer; doesn't work on Leopard; driver scheduled to come out in January. A salesman at the Apple Store says this is way unusual; old printer drivers tend to survive Mac OS upgrades. As a matter of fact, the old HP printer driver worked just fine on Leopard.
  9. I prefer that one. Next year, when members opine that Ned should have used his closer in the seventh, they can criticize him for not thinking on the dry side of the aqueduct.
  10. Please refrain from AOL/text message-speak on the board. In other words, 'you' needs to be spelled out; "u" isn't acceptable. From the "language not allowed" section of the Rules of Conduct:
  11. They take the caps away at Brewer games, too. I think the problem is that when there's liquid in a capped bottle, you also have a pretty significant projectile in hand.
  12. This is the original version of the one I use: http://img243.imageshack.us/img243/295/princewall6ot2.jpg I found it to be a bit bright for me, so the one that's actually on my desktop is softened up a bit. When I'm at my own computer, I'll see if I can get it uploaded somewhere.
  13. The GM vote is advisory. The article states, "Replay eventually would have to be approved by the unions for players and umpires, and possibly in a vote by owners." I'd assume the commissioner would have something to say about this, too.
  14. I'll expand on both of those: People who call you on their cell and expect you to patiently try to hear them even though they're in a noisy place or reception is crummy. People who yell at you for talking or making some other kind of noise because you don't notice that they're babbling on their bluetooth headset.
  15. Just last night, Yuku gave us a "Mimic Forum" button which reduces the time needed to create a new forum from about 3 minutes to about 20 seconds. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I think there'd be too much overlap between two forums in this case. I think both members and mods would find cases that would be confusing when it comes to getting the right thread into the right forum. We can do that. I'll kick it in once I find the icons. I think appropriate thread titling is something that's always helpful, and not just in this forum. A thread title with only a person's name is almost always too ambiguous. And as far as the use of the term, kids, I know Jim's a nice guy, so I figured right away that he was using it as a term of endearment.
  16. Can you definitely pinpoint the spam to brewcrewreview? Looking in from the outside, these mails seem unrelated. FTJ, some of the worst kind of spam simply produces more spam if you unsubscribe. The unsubscribe link simply becomes a way to confirm that your e-mail address is active. bcr, are you able to offer some insight into this issue?
  17. Baseball in the middle of the night is a cool novelty once in a while, but I've had my fill of it after the Rockies-D'backs series.
  18. Those are the kind of things that defensive metrics miss out on, further complicating the task of assigning value to defense. "Missed double plays that aren't errors" and "comes off the bag" are examples that make the situation even worse. There's no objective way to count them that I can think of. When you have a situation like endaround points out (being at the bottom of "every single metric"), you can probably start feeling secure with what you're getting from the stats. Not advancing runners by sacrifice can probably be counted pretty accurately; I don't know who conveniently offers that stat, though.
  19. Since the Yuku migration, it has become much easier to quote messages than it was before. Not surprisingly, a few issues have popped up. Please remember these general guidelines. Quoting multi-paragraph blocks is not reader friendly. Neither is quoting a string of a multiple nested replies. Editing quotes is simple and easy, so please try and make an attempt to better illustrate your point. Try to limit your quote to the specific line that you want to quote. If you choose the part of the message that best leads into your topic sentence, you're likely to make sense. Quoting entire paragraphs is redundant and cumbersome for a reader and may muddle the point you are trying to make. If, within your message, you feel you need to refer to more than one part of a post, quote small sections, then respond underneath each one. There is generally no need to nest quotes deeper than two replies. There is no need to quote a picture or any other media file. A simple reference will do just fine. We've all seen the picture (or whatever) and we all know what you're talking about. There is no need to quote it eight more times on the same page. Again, it's not reader friendly. Remember that Yuku places a number on each reply. This can be used in addition to the quote feature. The two work hand in hand quite well. Also, each reply has its own URL available if you'd like to create a link. Please remember that the quote is actually part of your message. Choosing what to quote and how to present it should require the same thought and care as composing the message itself. Directions for using the quote feature, following quote guidelines, and finding message URLs are included in the Usability FAQ, beginning at this point. If you have any questions, feel free to ask by replying to this thread. Thanks!

  21. A lot of sabermetricians will say that run differential is run differential and that the combination of pitching, defense, or hitting that creates it doesn't matter much. About a year ago, on the radio, a Baseball Prospectus guy said the 'older school' train of thought, emphasizing pitching and defense in the playoffs, is reemerging. When talking about pitching, he specifically singled out the closer. Increased emphasis on pitching/defense in the playoffs would make sense; more games are played in run-constrained environments. Of course, the same run-constraint issues would apply in close regular season games, especially in games featuring two good starting pitchers. Colorado is an animal all it's own. I can't see any way around a stronger-than-usual emphasis on pitching and defense. The Coors outfield is huge. As far as pitchers, care has to be taken to find guys whose pitches survive the thin air.

  23. If a call shows up as 'private', it means is the caller is blocking his/her phone number from showing up on your caller ID. I'd bet that the '+25290781180' that you're seeing is some kind of code relating to that. You can probably block all private calls. I do that on my landline. Callers hear a message that they need to allow their number to go through. That might pose a problem for some people, though. Their friends or family may prefer not to send along their caller ID information and might not be savvy enough to unblock it on a per-call basis. Giving this person the benefit of the doubt, I guess I'd assume that he's dialing the wrong number and that there's a good chance he isn't figuring this out because he could be hitting redial. But I'd definitely call 611 and check with your cell company about this.
  24. I wanted to see if J.J. Hardy, Chris Capuano, Jeff Suppan, and Bill Hall contributed to the Jack Abbott campaign, but then I realized that this site only covers contributions to U.S. House, U.S. Senate, and U.S. Presidential races.
  25. What appears to be unusual this year is that in other seasons, Melvin cleaned out a few players right after the season ended. He hasn't done that this year. And what was unusual last year was the fact that the Brewers didn't add any minor leaguers. That was due to a CBA change. There'll obviously need to be some additions this year. Other routines will stay in place. Players will declare free agency, freeing a few spots after the World Series. And there could be some non-tenders, freeing a couple spots in December.
