  1. It's a good point that Garza will be able to return on the 17th and calling up Davies might not be necessary. To have that happen, Matt would likely need to do a rehab start in the minors before then. Mass Haas pointed out above that Zach's schedule won't need to be adjusted; he's conveniently already scheduled to start on the 17th.
  2. I think they'd like to keep Zach starting on schedule until he's needed in Milwaukee. If he spends less than 20 days in the minors, he'll get the service time anyway unless he's sent down again.
  3. From JSOnline: Brewers place Matt Garza on DL; recall Tyler Cravy Matt's DL placement is retroactive to April 2. Tom points out that Tyler wasn't stretched out as a starter in camp. When a fifth starter is needed, Zach Davies will likely get the call.
  4. Yeah. He's on the 15 day DL.
  5. Yeah, we're fine right now because posts are staying within the bounds of common sense. It wouldn't take much to tip the scales, though. I shop at Amazon quite a bit because I know the drill, I don't have to give my personal information to yet another vendor, track my package on systems I don't know how to use, etc. I can generally find what I want to buy and pay for it in a few minutes. Amazon's prices are generally competitive, although they're not necessarily the lowest. At times, a price will be way out of line. Staying on the cusp of the political thing without actually getting political, I'll sure be glad to have a break from candidate phone calls. Yesterday, I got an automated call from someone running for a 2nd district city council seat in a city I don't live in.

  7. I believe the answer to the trivia question is President Taft (the first President to throw out an opening day first pitch).
  8. Those splits don't seem to make sense. It indicates no home runs vs a lefty but then indicates Scooter has hit two home runs against left handed starters. According to Baseball Reference, "vs Starter batting splits are for the entire game when the starter was LH or RH. These splits include any subsequent plate appearances against a reliever regardless of their throwing hand."
  9. Look at what Denard Span does with his right foot while he's hitting. Just watching him hurts.
  10. Bumgarner has the flu, so that might affect things as the game goes on.
  11. I hear lawn mowers and weed wackers in the neighborhood.
  12. Extra Innings may be free for a week on all cable and satellite systems that offer it. That generally happens again right after the All Star game.
  13. MLB's Gameday doesn't indicate that the game being broadcast in Spanish on WRRD (1510 AM). However, MLB.TV does. So I've added that tidbit to the lead with the caveat that it may or may not be accurate. In the past, WRRD has broadcast home day games. Also, today's game is the free game of the day on MLB.TV.
  14. Scooter's starting vs. a lefty, so it would make sense to put him lower in the order.
  15. The best thing to do for new members is to be welcoming and to be patient if it appears that they don't quite know the ropes. Many new members have lurked, gotten a feel for the board's etiquette, and fit in quickly. Others may go through an adjustment period, then ultimately turn into valuable contributors. Member post counts appear next to messages, and join dates appear in profiles. These can be helpful tools to help veteran posters gauge how to fashion a response. As an example, "oh no, not again" certainly wouldn't be an appropriate way to respond to a member's third post. Of course, there's the occasional "bull in a china shop." We certainly don't want to be told collectively that we're all a bunch of idiots. In situations like this, you might find that you're in the position to give some reasonable guidance. But if you find that tough to do that without coming off like a jerk yourself, the best thing to do is PM a moderator who tends to be around regularly. That person can alert the rest of the moderating team, and we can monitor the situation.
  16. Jason Lane just homered for the Brewers.
  17. Locked in favor of this topic in the Major Leagues forum: Brewers sign reliever Carlos Torres

  19. I'd say the difference is somewhat subjective based on the prominence of the victim, the motive (political, religious, or military), a degree of secretiveness or surprise, and the level of treachery.
  20. I'm sure there are concerns about Colorado Springs, but I'd doubt that it would do any good for Craig or the front office to publicly express them.
  21. Patty Duke’s death is somewhat of a surprise. MeTV had recently been showing her in a promo for reruns of [cite]The Patty Duke Show[/cite]. The promo was obviously recorded somewhat recently. Apparently, she fell ill about a week before she died. The theme hawing posted is definitely one of the greats in TV history. It was parodied on [cite]Roseanne[/cite] when that show recast one of its characters. Lyrics in the parody included lines like “one pair of matching actors, but only one part to play” and “they walk alike, they talk alike, abruptly leave the show alike.” William Schallert, who played Patty’s dad in [cite]The Patty Duke Show[/cite], has a cameo in the parody. Schallert is still with us at age 93. This video has a version of the original theme along with the [cite]Roseanne[/cite] version, which starts just after the one minute mark. Besides [cite]The Patty Duke Show[/cite], she’ll be remembered for her iconic role as Helen Keller in [cite]The Miracle Worker[/cite]. The play was originally performed on live TV, with Anne Bancroft playing her teacher, Anne Sullivan. After that, the play was adapted for Broadway, with Duke playing opposite Bancroft and later Suzanne Pleshette. Ultimately, the story became an Academy Award winning film starring Bancroft and Duke. In the late 1970s, Duke took on the role of Sullivan with Melissa Gilbert playing Keller. Here’s a scene from the film with Bancroft and Duke; Anne is trying to teach Helen to use a spoon and eat off of her own plate. Patty’s biggest contribution was probably that of a mental health advocate after making her successful treatment for bipolar disorder public. In this 1970 video, she’s almost certainly experiencing a bipolar episode during her bizarre acceptance speech for an Emmy award. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcUYBKDADLE At the ceremony, she’s seated with Desi Arnaz Jr. Their relationship was all over the tabloids at the time as he was 17 and she was 23 and divorced. For years, Desi was thought to be the biological father of Patty’s son Sean Astin, who was adopted by her third husband John Astin. Sean says he has four fathers: John Astin, Desi, Michael Tell (Patty’s second husband and Sean's biological father according to DNA testing; they were married for 13 days before the marriage was annulled), and his stepdad, Michael Pearce (who was married to Patty from 1986 until her death).
  22. There's no rush to put a player on the 60 day DL until the roster spot is needed. That could be anywhere between today several weeks from now.
  23. It seems that the team has made it known that they'd prefer a smaller facility. Only one stadium built since Chase (Yankee Stadium) has a larger seating capacity. And eight facilities built or renovated since the turn of the millennium (including two that fake it by covering seats with tarps) have capacities under 40,000. Smaller facilities may be part of the current "state of the art." It's actually worldwide. There's a huge fan base in Japan, for instance. And kalle8 gives a great example. He never would have made it to Milwaukee (or this board ) had it not been for the Brewers. As a kid, my first awareness of US cities came from following sports. As far as economic impact goes, I don't think it benefits the D'Backs to try to argue it. There's enough evidence to the contrary that people are going to believe what they want to, and it's not an argument that the team is likely to "win." They're probably better off sticking to the idea that the community is committed to spending $187 million that it doesn't have and that maybe there's a better alternative.
  24. Neither one — Nieuwenhuis nor Presley — has sufficient time in the majors to disregard minor league numbers. Complicating things is that they've both moved around enough that each one has stops that toss in tiny samples. That makes it tough to eyeball numbers. Ideally, I'd look for the most recent 1,500 AB or PA, rounding off to the full season that makes the player exceed that threshold. Both of them are older, so I guess I can't get too bent out of shape if one is picked over the other. Maybe I'd pick Presley because I can spell his name without having to practice.
