  1. A Madison triple-A team would need to improve upon the Mallards' attendance average and do it over the course of a season that's two months longer, including the cold months of April & May. Madison was in the Midwest League for a while. I don't know what the attendance situation was, but I'm sure the stadium situation was the main reason the team left.
  2. If you're heading out to the park to see this version of Lincecum, you're not a very intelligent baseball fan. We don't need that.
  3. I thought he was shaky when I heard him on Friday. Of course, first night jitters out of someone who's an amateur is to be expected. My guess is that the Brewers scrambled to find someone to fill in. But I thought that about Augie 1, and he's stuck around for several years. Guys like the Augies can have niches within a TV broadcast, or they can be fill-ins, but when they're relied upon too much, things start to get choppy and disjointed. I hold former players to a different standard than I would for those who are professionally trained. Their main job is to be interesting. Still, they have to demonstrate some degree of comfort in front of the mike.

  5. Here's an article from the Brewers' website: 'Augie' times two: August joins Brewers broadcast Davey is dealing with a "medical matter." Details aren't available, but it's probably back pain. August has limited on the air experience doing high school broadcasts.
  6. That's been the knock on Davies for his entire career. From a scouting perspective, we probably shouldn't expect much. From a stat perspective, he looks better. But despite everything, Zach has exceeded expectations throughout his career. In cases like that, you just ride with the player and hope for the best. That might be pretty good, or it might not be. Any responsible predictions regarding Zach's chances for success would obviously need to be tempered. But that doesn't mean that he hasn't earned his shot.

  8. Don August (Augie 2?) has joined the Brewers TV team. It's not clear whether this is permanent or temporary, but apparently Davey Nelson is "under the weather." I didn't realize that Don had stayed in Milwaukee since his time with the Brewers. He's currently the head JV baseball coach at Menomonee Falls High School.
  9. A couple wild cards not mentioned yet- Salt Lake City or Oklahoma City? Both of these metropolitan areas are smaller than Milwaukee. If they are going to realign things and expand, they may as well make the DH MLB wide and just organize the (preferrably largeer) divisions by geographical location. That would save money in travel also. Not sure how Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and the Bay area would feel about that though. The two-market teams have objected to radical realignment in the past. I think their opinion would be pretty important in this matter. From a fan standpoint, it could go either way. Having your rivals closer geographically makes it easier for fans to travel. And it'd be fun to see your teams fight it out head to head. On the flip side, fans in two-market cities have the ability to see every major league team every year if they'd like.
  10. Yeah, the 20% paycut rule applies to minor leaguers, so a full season in the big leagues becomes a gift that keeps on giving.
  11. That's a good point that we frequently forget. However, the difference is that while the Mexican League is AAA, unlike AAA teams in the States, the teams sign their own players.
  12. I think that monty57 hit the nail on the head in post 20. Presley and Nieuwenhuis are "guys who might bring something, but could be cut without remorse if they fail." Also, as he said, having them on the Major League roster frees up room for prospects to play. I'd have probably brought up a pitcher, but that doesn't kill the logic behind choosing Presley to beef up the outfield situation.
  13. I don't see any city as a no brainer. I'm not sure that there are even choices right now that qualify as logical. Denver was the last relatively easy choice. But I do see more and more people making a case for Montreal. Their attendance issues were due to ownership, and in the end, the stadium. Before things messed up in the 1990s, the Expos did well. The city is no slam dunk, but I believe it's worthy of consideration. The situation has to be studied in order to determine if the Expos' last decade and a half was truly out of the fan's control. There'd be more options with greater revenue sharing. I think there are cities that can put 2.5 to 3 million in the stands. But they're still going to struggle with revenue under the current structure.
  14. ^^ This has always been my understanding. The clock wouldn't reset. The player would simply have to complete his 90 days on the active roster.

  16. Combining the article in the lead with the article that prompted last fall's expansion thread, it sure sounds that Manfred is interested in Canada and Mexico if or when the time comes. But he does state that expansion is a longer term thing rather than around the corner. And he says that stadium situations in Tampa Bay and Oakland have to be settled first. I'll take it a step further and submit that any new franchises need to have stadium plans. Two of the last four expansion teams didn't. He also seems to have a preference for new teams to not be too close to existing ones in order to protect television territories.
  17. Today's contest is the MLB.TV Free Game of the Day.
  18. Well, we don't have as many uniforms as the Diamondbacks. I'm guessing that sooner of later, a player will dress in the wrong uniform and get one of those "friendly" reprimands from the commissioner's office. Wasn't the new blue "Milwaukee" jersey originally announced as the road alternate? And isn't the blue "Brewers" jersey technically still around?

  20. Per Craig Counsell after the game. EDIT… Here's a brief article: http://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/brewers-tyler-cravy-optioned-to-triple-a-25561875/
  21. They wear the retro pinstripes on Fridays at home, but outside of that, my gut says that the players like the blue jerseys regardless of the logo. Starting pitchers have been known to pick the day's uniform, but I don't think that's set in stone.
  22. The Brewers introduced their robin egg blue road uniforms in 1972; the 1969–71 Pilots-Brewers road uniforms were a lighter blue. As Jimbo said, they switched to gray in 1986. The Cardinals had blue road uniforms similar to the Brewers robin egg color from 1973–84. The Royals' road blues were slightly lighter and were used from 1973–91. Source: http://www.sportslogos.net/
  23. It would be a huge overreaction to outlaw shifts because offense is down. Scoring has been up and down over the years, and any concerns expressed at the time seem to take care of themselves. If you're going to outlaw shifts, you may as well also outlaw the occasional five man infield. Both have their place. If teams want to try to gain a benefit or risk getting burned, it's their prerogative.
