  1. George Martin, arranger and producer for the Beatles, turned 90 yesterday. We haven't seen a lot of him on TV, but we've certainly seen the results of his work over the past several decades.
  2. No t, two s's. Sexson
  3. … Is there a particular methodology you are using to say that they were a .500 team in terms of talent? … logan82, could you clue us in on the methodology you're using? I agree that we should be working with talent rather than the win-loss record in the standings. But my gut says that once the mid-season trades were made, we were probably closer to a 94 loss talent level than an 81 loss level. What number of wins/losses should our starting point be, and how are you determining that?
  4. Waivers aren't needed to trade players this time of year. That would also apply to Rule 5 players.
  5. As the article mentions, if Eric makes the team, he'd be part of the third father-son combo to play for the Brewers (Tito and Terry Francona, Davey and Derrick May, and Eric Young and Eric Young Jr.).
  6. NFL games this season are averaging 3 hours and 12 minutes this season. In 2014, MLB games averaged 3 hours and 2 minutes. Fast paced is a subjective opinion, but I think that NFL games have a ton of standing around with players doing nothing.
  7. You can't promise a timetable to fans, and it probably isn't going to work to have one internally either. Stearns needs to take advantage of opportunities, and part of that is to stock the minors at all levels. That's what will sustain success. Bringing up one wave of players isn't going to do it; the system ultimately needs to be providing useful players to the major league team every year. Nobody can predict how those opportunities might arise. At this point, David has to go with the flow and grab the best talent available, regardless of level. And by the way, let's not talk negatively about members in the third person as if they're not there. Either respond to the content of the message or read on until you have something constructive to add.
  8. I prefer to reserve judgment until we've been able to see the documentary. It could be particularly good, particularly bad, or anywhere in between. Right now, we know nothing except for the fact that it exists and its director is an artist who's into transformers.
  9. Somehow I can't see sucking as badly as possible to be the GM's goal. If it is, he definitely wouldn't admit it.
  10. If they want to convert him the first long term then send him to AAA to do so. There's a lot of stuff that shouldn't be determined in spring training, but you can fiddle around with a position change and proceed based on how the player responds. That said, I want Domingo in one of the corner outfield spots, preferably right. But if he can get a few more ABs by occasionally playing CF or maybe 1B, I can live with that.
  11. It's also noteworthy that Hernandez's best year was below average league wide You've lost me here. Below average based on what? José K, 2002: .356 OBP, .478 SLG, .834 OPS NL average, 2002: .331 OBP, .410 SLG, .741 OPS MLB average, 2002: .331 OBP, .417 SLG, .748 OPS
  12. I've added the spoiler tag to the post editor. It's circled in this picture: [margin][/margin] To create a simple spoiler, simply select the text you'd like to hide with the spoiler, and click the button. [margin]The code will look like this before you post: [spoiler]Some stuff to hide.[/spoiler] … and this will be the result: [/margin] You can optionally include a label on your spoiler by adding =Whatever label you'd like to the opening [spoiler] tag. 13. If you'd like, you can use spoiler tags. They can be added via the post editor, coded by hand, or pasted from the examples provided below. 14. I think that if you're building and maintaining properly, it's reasonable to expect an off season here and there. That might be the result of patience rather than panicking. More often than not, it seems that when full-fledged rebuilds become necessary, they're implemented as a means to clean up a mess that could have potentially been avoided.
  15. I'm looking at doing some work in one of my bathrooms. The initial research causes me to watch a lot of YouTube videos. It blows me away that people don't bother to clean their toilets before filming. When there's construction dirt, that's expected. But viewers don't need to see the results of actually using the toilet.
  16. What if he's as terrible at 1B as he was 3B? I think that might be the fear. But it wouldn't do the team or the player any good for Counsell or Stearns to come out and say, "We think he's going to suck."
  17. Are Alvarez' numbers adjusting for park factor? OPS+ has been cited. That stat covers ballparks. It also adjusts to the league average for each season.
  18. Why choose OPS instead of OBP? OBP is a great stat, and it's an important skill for a hitter, but it misses out on extra base hits. For the kind of illustration that sveumrules needed to provide, extra base hits should be included. While OPS doesn't give enough weight to OBP, it often comes close enough to being reasonably accurate. Plus, it offers convenience and familiarity. The question that came up involved good months vs. bad months. For monthly splits, you're best off with a rate stat. OPS is an appropriate way to illustrate that. It's to the point, and it's not as cumbersome to read as a string of slash stat splits. If you're comparing two players with similar OPSes, you might be forced to use slash stats, or you could use one of the more advanced rate stats. There are definitely times when people cherry pick around here, and there are times when they don't necessarily choose the best stat to illustrate a point, but this isn't one of those cases.
  19. is Davis super mega bad? Apparently. It sounds like it was tried briefly and that he was so obviously bad that a judgment could be made quickly.
  20. I think that the no trade clause is the biggest hurdle, the contract is the second biggest hurdle, the recent injury situation is the third biggest hurdle, and the scandal stuff is the fourth biggest. As time goes on, the no trade clause is going to continue to be there. The contract commitment will get smaller. Hopefully, the injury issue will dissipate. And the PED thing will be further in the past.
  21. If nothing else, Nick can help fill out a minor league roster.
  22. or Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun which would have been released much closer to his birth? Mel Gibson played Bret Maverick in the 1994 film based on the TV series. The film was released 10 days before "our" Brett Maverick's birth. EDIT: Thanks to Mass Haas for the clarification. The release of the film must have been a coincidence. Brett's comment explains the extra t on his first name.
  23. Am I missing something here. Its Brett Phillips not Maverick Phillips right? My preference would be to call him Bret Maverick, skipping the second t on the first name and omitting Phillips entirely. At any rate, his full name is Brett Maverick Phillips. It appears that he was named after the Bret Maverick TV character played by James Garner.
  24. (44 in 440 PAs, compared to 52 in 549 in 2014) I was going to say that those walk rates were about the same, but Khris had 32 walks in 549 PA in 2014.
