  1. I see that Gord Ash is listed as "Vice President - Baseball Projects." I'm also noticing that Matt Arnold has vice president attached to his title while Stearns is simply listed as General Manager. Given that, I'd expect the page to tack on a presidency or vice presidency to David's title.
  2. The tricky part about saying "mediocre" is that there multiple ways that the word can be used. From dictionary.com: There are distinct and conflicting ways to use and interpret the word, all of which are correct. Ordinary, barely adequate, not satisfactory, and poor cover quite a range.
  3. Congratulations.
  4. It's the whole organization, which is how expansion drafts typically work. It looks like vannzee is essentially following the procedure from the 1997 MLB draft.
  5. Here's an article: Cleveland Indians acquire right-hander Kirby Yates from Tampa Bay for cash The Indians designated Michael Choice for assignment to make room for Yates.
  6. I've never seen a horse get loose, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Yeah, slow moving vehicles are a hazard, and buggies are no exception to that. They're not a lot different than encountering a tractor, though. Bicycles can make the road interesting too. On Sundays, they're all over the place west of Madison, and you need to figure that every time you encounter a hill, there'll be bicycles on the other side of the crest. Up north, you have the added attraction of many roads not having shoulders. Bikes, buggies, and tractors are in the lane of traffic. All you can do is follow them until you have the opportunity to carefully go around them. The bottom line is that tractors, buggies, and bicycles are legal and a fact of life. Unlike deer, at least they're operated by humans who are (usually) aware of their responsibilities. Deer like to do the opposite of what drivers expect; anything goes with them.
  7. Spotting buggies at night has gotten a lot easier since the Amish started using battery operated taillights. Previously, you had to spot the reflection of a slow moving vehicle emblem. Local drivers tend to know the drill, but I can see buggies startling people who aren't used to it.
  8. Yeah, you run into those in Mexico. And cows are known to lie down on the roads at night because they like the warmth of the pavement.
  9. Pretty much all of your options suck. I knew one person who was killed by hitting a deer. And I know another who hit a deer, had it bounce over her vehicle, and kill the person in the car behind her. The best solution I've found is to drive more slowly, especially at certain times of the year and especially at night. That gives you some time to react and opens up more options. On two lane roads at night, I've found that 45mph is a pretty good speed.
  10. I had my mirror clipped off by a deer once. Unfortunately, I couldn't recover anything from the deer. I was just glad that the damage wasn't worse and that I wasn't hurt.
  11. I'd say "hasn't been" easy to fill rather than "isn't." Even though teams are likely valuing first base defense more than they've been in the past, I think the current shortage of Major League first basemen is something that's temporary rather than permanent. Still, it's an issue in the present, and teams have to deal with that. The silver lining for the Brewers is that they don't have to prioritize 1B right now.
  12. My gut says that no list is necessary and that all that has to be done is send a player over to the new team when the time comes to do it.
  13. Enough snow to track the deer is good. Snow that makes it difficult to walk isn't. Warm weather is worse. Not that many years ago, it was in the 60s on opening day, and there were a lot of concerns about meat spoiling.
  14. I believe that a PTBNL can generally come from anywhere in the system except the 25 man roster. Right now, there's no 25 man roster.
  15. Nothing in the MLB.com Rule 5 FAQ or the Rule 5 Wikipedia page indicates that a player can't be drafted twice.
  16. Yeah, the in-market games carried by FOX regional sports networks will be available for sure. Reading through the stuff, I thought we'd need the FOX app to see the games, but maybe they'll be available on MLB.TV. I think the postseason was actually available in both apps. The only issue is that a cable subscription is going to be required. Still, options have opened up that weren't available before. The other RSNs involve separate negotiations, but it's possible that some of them will be included by opening day.
  17. Because this is a topic that's important news and likely to generate a significant number of replies, it makes sense to note the move in the 40 man thread and carry on the discussion here. Note the Hernán Pérez topic as an example. It's generated 65 posts over 12 days. Having that discussion in the 40 man thread would make it difficult for those who simply want to follow the moves. We also have the side issue of large topics affecting board performance. If we relegated all discussion of 40 man roster moves to that topic, we'd be splitting it frequently.
  18. Just because Luis was traded doesn't mean that David doesn't like him.
  19. The worst part about security questions is that the whole concept is insecure. If you answer them honestly, a lot of people will have that information. If you fake the answers, you have to have a system where you'll remember them. I suppose that you can use a bunch of random answers and keep that information in your password manager, but that gets into a lot of bother. Just as bad is when I have to confirm my identity by answering questions about myself based on publicly available information, such as a car I own or owned. I could answer those questions about several people and could easily pass myself off as being them.
  20. They can also help avoid the long innings that are pure torture for the fans and players, i.e. the innings that have a bunch of walks and pitching changes mixed in with a bunch of hits. And they can help avoid the need for forced roster moves when bullpens are taxed.
  21. Probably because the percent of times it matters are pretty small unless the guy is a pinch hitter.… Yeah, the situational aspects get into small samples that don't mean much when you try to apply stats to individuals. You need to look at a player's overall stats to determine general value, then apply the eye test for situational stuff. We had the Branyan-Cirillo combo several years ago. They complemented each other well. They carried similar OBPs, with Russ providing the SLG percentage and Jeff providing the situational skills. I was actually surprised that A-Ram returned anyone at all who might become useful. He was going to retire (or if he changed his mind, he'd be a free agent), and he wasn't having a good season at the time of the trade. Based on some of the prospect hauls in trades made over the past few months, I think it's reasonable to think that the PTBNL will be better than Betancourt. But I want to temper that enthusiasm a little. Message boards (not necessarily this one) will see a PTBNL and automatically assume that this guy's going to be a top prospect, no matter who might have been traded for said PTBNL. K-Rod's been good, though, and I think we might be pleasantly surprised once this trade is completed.
  22. Craig was a good hitter outside of lacking power. Javier is coming off a string of 1000-plus ABs where his OBP has barely peeked over .300; you can't find a stretch like that for Counsell. But as others have said, it's probably fair to say that the jury's still out. Maybe Betancourt has Craig Counsell potential.
  23. It could be like contracts that vest where some stats are allowed (such as starts or games finished) while others aren't (like ERA or BA). But performance is going to be irrelevant in this situation. Because players to be named have to be exchanged within six months of a trade, there won't be any time for K-Rod to "perform."
  24. I was going to post a smartass response and name two players with a combined walk total less than Hernán's, but off the top of my head, I couldn't come up with even one player who has walked less. Even Ben Sheets walked at a higher rate than Pérez has.
  25. Here's an article: Brewers sign Hernán Pérez to minor-league deal
