  2. A Google search indicates that some E-ZPass states (e.g. New York and Virginia) have eliminated the monthly fee. Also, E-ZPass rates vary from agency to agency (state to state). There's no restriction as far as which agency that you buy from. The only "hidden" fee that I've found with Illinois' I-PASS is that there's a 3 cent surcharge on tolls paid in Indiana. I-PASS is accepted by 26 agencies in various states. Likewise, E-ZPass is accepted in Illinois.
  3. Yeah, you need to pre-fund. You start out by paying $30: $10 for the transponder deposit and $20 toward tolls. You can set up your account so it automatically replenishes when you're below a certain threshold. You get to pick the amount. "Overdrafts" are covered; you have X number of days to pay, although I believe those tolls are charged at the cash rate. The transponder has different colored lights. One of the lights will warn you when funds are low.
  4. Thanks for the responses. When I add a vehicle, is it good to go immediately, or is there a period of time before the addition takes effect?
  5. It looks like I-PASS is a good investment for occasional tollway users. The deposit on a transponder is only $10, and with the cost of tolls cut in half, you'd recoup that investment quickly. More significantly, it's a lot more convenient than fiddling with cash, changing lanes at 70-plus MPH to get to the cash lanes, etc. Also, you can have multiple transponders under a single account and replenish your account automatically, which would simplify payments. My question is that the probability of my using different cars is pretty good. I have two cars, and although I probably don't use the tollway enough to justify it, I suppose that I could get a transponder for each one. But what if a friend comes over and says, "Let's take my car." Would we be able to use a transponder in my possession for the trip?

  9. I can't answer that. You could probably try inserting another CD-R disk and see if that works. You could replace the CD/DVD drive on your old Mac pretty inexpensively if you thought it was worth it. But a better investment might be an external drive that would work on your newer Mac. Don't they make cleaning disks? Maybe you could try running one of those.
  10. The reason for Bill's absence has been explained. He was added to the Brewers' Wall of Honor tonight, and he's up in a suite drinking beer.
  11. Mike Fiers has no beard. I just tuned in last inning. Apparently Bill isn't there. Bruce Froemming was in the booth at that point, and apparently, Bob Uecker had been there earlier. Now it's Jeff Levering and Davey Nelson.
  12. Thanks for the lineups. It saves the moderators some work. I'll have a thread posted for tomorrow, but I'm not likely to be able to provide lineups. If someone's able to post them, that'd be great.
  13. CD-R should work. It could be a problem with the drive or the disk (or a little of both). Maybe one or the other is in need of cleaning. Can you see the disk in Disk Utility? If so, maybe you could clone its contents to a .dmg. Given that it works in the car, I'd probably try another computer if one is available rather than wasting too much time trying to troubleshoot the Mac. You can fiddle with the Mac when you have more time on your hands. Here's a MacWorld article: Cures for an uncooperative CD/DVD drive
  14. One part of it has to do with the transliteration method that's in place (the conversion of a text from one script to another). Another has to do with who's been in charge. Various governments have implemented different methods. We've only widely referred to Beijing since the 1980s. Previously, it was Peking. Before that, a lot of maps referred to Peiping. Around the same time, Mao Tse-tung became Mao Zedong. And Chiang Ch'ing (aka Madame Mao) became Jiang Qing.
  15. The Brewers have a lot more good will than they had a decade ago. At that point, the team hadn't contended or even reached .500 in over a decade. The minor league system had produced next to nothing over that time. And there was little hope of raising a small payroll, even though Miller Park was brand new. At this point, fans understand the process of rebuilding and have reason to believe that it will work. And they know that the team is able and willing to pay for players and put a mid-market payroll on the field. With a recent history of relative success, fans aren't as likely to consider a rebuild to be synonymous with doom. I'd expect attendance to decrease, but not to the point where it was when fans were extremely frustrated. And because a rebuilding phase tends to have a team carrying a lower payroll, there's no reason why the Brewers can't continue to break even. Also, during a rebuild, I think we'll be able to see players that are somewhat better than a team full of Logan Schafers. A decade ago, it was a big deal to pay a player $3 million. During a rebuild at this point, it shouldn't be a problem to have a handful of $5–10 million players on short term contracts.

  17. Another one was posted today. If you go to this page and hover over the comic, arrows will appear and the comics can be read in sequence, with the newest appearing first.
  18. The booing doesn't bother me. It is what it is. The thing that bothered me about the whole Braun situation last year is that idiots in the press kept reporting that Ryan's poor performance had to do with not using PEDs. Obviously, the reality was that his thumb caused him to swing the bat essentially with one hand. Maybe a few people will catch on to the fact that he still can hit, and more significantly, maybe some will catch on to the idea that what's reported isn't necessarily fact.
  19. Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered Pluto in 1930, was Clayton Kershaw's great uncle.
  20. According to the article above, hitters are generally compared to their career BABIP and pitchers are generally compared to the league BABIP. This is because pitchers need much larger samples for their BABIPs to "stabilize." Hitters' BABIP will likely stabilize after 800 balls in play while pitchers need about 2,000 balls in play for that to happen. Maybe it's better to look at a stat like xFIP at this point. Jungmann's xFIP is currently 3.83. That's encouraging, but it does suggest that his 2.15 ERA is likely affected by defense and good fortune. Of course, no matter how you slice and dice it, all Major League samples are small right now.
  21. It's hard to surpass "The Giants win the pennant!"
  22. Yeah, really. MLB.com listed the game time as 6:00 (CDT), which was actually the start of the pregame show. Way to be complicit in getting people to turn in early.
  23. Braun was booed, but all of the Cardinals were booed much more loudly than he was. Everyone else was cheered. But I'm not sure what the fans did with Pujols. Do people "poo" him?
  24. They've been showing each team's "Franchise Four." I'm pleased to say that I haven't been appalled by any of the choices. FWIW, Nolan Ryan was on the Franchise Four for three teams (Astros, Angels, and Rangers). The Brewers four are Cooper, Fingers, Molitor, and Yount.
  25. It looks like we're going to see it on a "reasonably regular" basis. "Reasonably regular" would eliminate the pressure of deadlines. And Facebook would eliminate problems with censorship. Here's some clarification from Breathed published in an AP article. Breathed stated on Facebook that it isn't unreasonable to assume that the Trump presidential candidacy was partly responsible for the temptation to restart the comic. Those with good memories will recall that when Bloom County ended, Trump's brain was implanted into Bill the Cat. Trump bought the strip, fired all of the characters, and turned it into "Trump: the Strip."
