  1. Wow, really...I enjoyed hearing something different for a change. Still in/and all, I have no idea if Sutcliffe would be annoying, were I to hear him for 150 games. I'd really like to see Bill go and maybe be replaced by Cirillo. Won't Brian be doing...oh, maybe Astros and Fox someday? http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
  2. Yes, this means his career ambitions may get him out of here...maybe after one more season. Too bad for those of you who like him, though.
  3. It was pretty much set in stone that the Astros were going to win with a runner on third and no outs. What was Yost saving Cordero for at that point? Even if you start the inning with Wise, it is inexcusable at this point in the season to let the game end without the best reliever throwing a pitch.
  4. Unfortunately, I think he has it about right...assuming they do win 82 or more. Ned Yost, Milwaukee BrewersWhen the Brewers careened from 14 games over .500 in May to a game under .500 in late August, it probably wouldn't have been a good time for Yost to run for mayor. But his GM (Doug Melvin) and his owner (Mark Attanasio) are bigger fans of stability than they are of panic. So Yost never appeared to be in massive danger, barring, say, an 0-30 finish. But when the Brewers pulled it together, won 13 of their next 20 and pulled back even with the Cubs, that was almost certainly enough to prove to Yost's employers that whatever shortcomings his team might have, willingness to play hard for the manager wasn't one of them. Odds he won't be back: 25-1
  5. That article is an excellent analysis. I sure hope Melvin and Mark A. see it. The part you quoted is a great summary of Ned's inadequacy. Plus it became even worse, Ned stuck with Wise even when: "...tied in the tenth inning, other team's best guys up, winning run on third base, no outs, ...".
  6. Maybe a place to vote for the single dumbest move in each game??? For last night, my vote would go to bringing in Turnbow with men on base. A close second (would be first, but my vote goes to the Turnbow move as without this he might not have had the chance to make this additional foolish decision) would be not using Cordero, ever...I don't think it was horrible to start the inning with Wise, but at some point shouldn't he think that it makes no sense to save Cordero anymore...maybe with a runner on third and one out. Maybe, just maybe, that is the time for your best pitcher?...y'know with the game being managed as if it were the last game of the year and all. If the game were still tied after using up Cordero, he has Capuano waiting to go multiple innings...just senseless.
  7. I feel the exact opposite. Anderson's boringness has made Bill S. more annoying to me than ever before. Still in/and all, the ball is carrying/not carrying, he got on top of it...please make it stop. I liked Matt V and Sutton better. Though, if you see Matt V now he is just another boring generic announcer not unlike Anderson. I think Anderson would be fine if paired with someone more entertaining or at least less repetitive...nothing wrong with still having a little fun even if the team is much better. I'd rather they had gotten someone with a genuine interest in the team than the guy with the best voice, or the guy least likely to harass Bill S, or whatever the criteria were. I don't suppose there is any chance of Bill retiring or moving on, is there? Oh well, I expect Brian Anderson will only be around until his next career opportunity comes along.
  8. I am really hoping this decision to run those guys out on short rest backfires. Both of them were over 100 pitches in their last starts, so its not like they are doing this after a short start.
  9. I don't believe there is a bright line there...that if he pitches X innings he will be just fine for the next 10 years, but if he pitches X+1, he becomes Kerry Wood. This is, of course, unknowable. Just about every team will win at least 65 games and also lose at least 65, in a season. The best teams will win around 95 games, 30 more than the minimum. Is a reasonable guess that the manager's net impact is maybe 10% of those 30 or 3 games one way or the other??? Without Sheets, none of the other issues would even come up because the Brewers would have been out of it long ago. Not sure what that means...cost us games compared to what? Leaving every starter in for 9 innings? Compared to having a perfect bullpen that never gives up a hit or a run? Why not ask how many games have we lost because the starter could not go even 6 innings or 7?
  10. Somewhere it was mentioned that Estrada has had a hamstring injury. Is it possible that this might be the reason for his inability to throw anyone out? His career stats, excluding 2007 have him throwing out nearly 27%. If he is hurt, it could be this injury is making it take longer to get up and also affecting the speed of the ball when he throws. If it is an injury, this might be a reason to let him come back next year. But, in any case, now that the Reds have exposed his inability to throw, he needs to do a lot of sitting the rest of this year.
  11. From JSonline.com on 9/15 That is HORRIBLE! So the July 19 CS listed above was an error...I checked game day log and it was in fact a pick-off. A couple others must also have been pick-offs, since he has only thrown out 6. The amazing thing is that more teams have not done what the Reds did yesterday...just run with any one who has any speed at all.
  12. This data is about two months old, so I thought it would be nice to bring it up to date. So let's see, Estrada now has 11 CS whereas two months ago he had...oh, hmm 11...can that be right, I guess so. Sorry, for the interuption, no need to update after-all.
  13. Yeah, I think this is a very big barrier to any change in the current convention.
  14. I don't remember ever in my life seeing the sort of stealing at will that happened yesterday in the first inning yesterday. If Sheets is slow, it is certainly magnified by the inability of Estrada to throw. Perhaps Miller should be Sheets catcher next time. I too would rather see Rivera and Miller. I think, in retrospect, picking up Estrada really has not seemed to add much...that is not to say that this could have been predicted in advance.
  15. Hey, that could be a great new promotion..."win the chance to sit in a couch in the dugout, sponsored by....". Brewers should see about selling this idea to maybe Steinhafels or Ashley. Much better than winning a seat in the outfield from Midwest.
  16. If two of Parra, Villanueva, Bush, Vargas, and Capuano fill out the starting rotation the other 3 could go to the bullpen, rather than being traded.
  17. They'd probably not be liked by the players either. So that does present a real problem, even if a manager wants to be unconventional. For example not having a specified closer, who only pitches the ninth with 3 run or less lead apparently creates havoc in bullpens these days, because the pitchers want to know what their "role" is. The funny thing is the really old school would be every bullpen pitcher's role was to be ready to pitch whenever called on and there was a "stopper" who would be called on when it seemed like the game was on the line, whatever the inning might be. Why there is no criticism of the modern style of baseball management, where it is apparently believed that coming in in the 9th inning with the bottom of the order due up and no one on base is a higher pressure situation than coming in in the 7th with two on and the 3, 4, and 5 hitters coming up is beyond me. But, I am just a dumb fan, so what do I know.
  18. There shouldn't be any reason for that, they likely see themselves as still having a shot with 4 against the cubs and 3 against the brewers.
  19. I would not call it an art at all, instead it is a rote formula. Must only use closer in ninth with 3 run or less lead. It is kind of pathetic, but like many other fields it is safer to lose conventionally rather than risk losing unconventionally, even if the unconventional route might give a better chance of winning.
  20. Getting close.................................... http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/905862/2/istockphoto_905862_fork_and_hand.jpg http://www.ncrsp.org/images/Cardinal.gif Hopefully they will win 3 of their next 4, though.
  21. Carlos Lee makes a diving catch http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/eek.gif He does not do that often...thanks Carlos!
  22. That's funny. I thought that steal was a dumb move at the time. Initially I thought "what the heck is Yost doing"...then when they showed Yost in the dugout afterward he looked irritated, so I thought Gross had gone on his own.
