  1. This gets a bit ridiculous doesn't it...so we always want an unused infielder and catcher sitting on the bench, when the game is over? I'd think you'd want a spare unused outfielder then, as well. So we have 3 guys we don't use and 8 starters, then even with 12 pitchers, you still can't "safely" use more that two pinch hitters in a game.
  2. There may be even be good reasons for that, such as keeping the players motivated. I agree with you that there were probably multiple reasons why Sheets was kept in and giving him a shot at a W was likely one of them. Sheets probably deserved the shot, if he wanted it. He is a pitcher who often can succeed even without his "best stuff". He also has frequently pitched well enough to deserve a win and not gotten it due to lack of run support. The manager probably will not get as much as possible out of Ben Sheets throughout the season, if he insists on treating him the same as Manny Parra.
  3. Just pointing out in case of emergency others have infield experience. I don't see having Counsell as the only infielder on the bench as a big problem. Braun would, at best, be the 4th choice at SS after Hardy, Counsell, and Hall...so it is pretty certain they would never get to that point. The Brewers have Rivera as back-up at 1b on their depth chart, which was a surprise to me...I expected to see maybe Hart listed there. Rivera had one inning at 1b in 2003, Corey Hart has 8 times http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif as much major league experience at that position and more recently, too. Kendall played a couple innings in the OF in 2007. So maybe the actual way Rivera is the emergency 1b back-up, if no one else if left on the bench, is Kendall in right, Hart at 1b, and Rivera catching.
  4. Well, thanks for the explanation, now I get it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif. But really, why? What are the chances of needing more than one back-up infielder? Besides, Rivera is listed as back-up for 1b, Hart has played 1b, Braun has played 3rd and was a SS once upon a time, and Bill Hall can be moved elsewhere in the infield were it necessary.
  5. Yes...another example is while I may understand the strategy behind Tony LaRussa making yet another pitching change, that does not mean I won't boo him when he does it. This happened a few years ago when the Cardinals had a fairly secure lead and yet LaRussa made a pitching change or two in the ninth inning.
  6. The reporter was apparently too lazy to spend 5 seconds searching the local newspaper website for "Geoff Jenkins", in order to be able to report the facts in addition to what Wes Helms claims he heard.
  7. I don't know, but my guess would be Tuesday, to keep him on the same schedule as Sheets.
  8. I remember a time when there were typically 10 pitchers on a team (4 starters) and they often had 3 catchers. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But, I agree that Rivera should be used for pinch-hiting...and yesterday he was.
  9. Was it known on April 17th that this is what would happen over the next 10 days?
  10. I still think once Sheets is healthy we will somehow go with only 12 pitchers and add Dillon back to the bench. OTOH, if they have no Sheets for an extended period of time, maybe they should consider continuing with 14 (uninjured) pitchers. Despite the lack of pinch hitters this leaves, maybe it's more important to have enough pitching, especially if we continue to have lots of short starts and extra innings.
  11. It may or may not be a good idea to bat Kendall ninth, but this "analysis" that it is working would seem to be flawed, if they did not consider that maybe Kendall has just been lucky so far. In addition, comparing results from last year's order of Estrada-pitcher to this year's pitcher-Kendall would seem to be of little value as there are too many variables. For instance the increase in the number of succesful bunts by pitchers...might the pitcher not following Estrada have something to do with that? Might there have been an increase even if Kendall was 8th? Both JJ and Kendall single and walk more often then Estrada and probably hit into more fielders choices and fewer double plays. So the pitcher is likely to bat with a runner on first more often when following either of them than Estrada. Then even if Estrada is on 1st, how likely is a force at second on a bunt attempt?
  12. You are not serious there are you? Kapler bunting (maybe) puts Weeks on second with 2 outs...that is exactly the same situation they had anyway after Weeks took second on fielders' indifference.
  13. Here is what I do not understand...if Kendall, Weeks, Braun, Fielder is a good order after the 1st inning, why not just have Kendall lead off and start the game with that order?
  14. I don't think not pinch hitting for Bush was a bad non-move. What does Counsell give you over Bush, maybe a 10% greater chance that you get Kendall an ab with a runner in scoring position? Then he would have maybe a 30% chance of driving the run in...so it would seem the chances of scoring are only improved by about 3%. Can not assume the pitcher's spot would not come up more than once later in the game, considering how frequently we are tied after 9 innings.
  15. Seems sensible. The question of who should be the closer, usually ignores that "closer" may be the most over-rated position/role. In a similar vein the "save" may be the most over-rated stat...'wow, you got 3 outs in the ninth without giving up 3 runs". I'd like to see the qualifications for a save revamped to maybe something like getting 3 outs while holding a 1 run lead, 6 outs with a 2 run lead, or 9 outs with a 3 run lead.
  16. Hmm and he says Braun is cocky? Has he actually ever pitched to him, just wondering if this minor league pitcher has any record to back-up his bragging.
  17. I emailed fox sports Wisconsin and complained. I was looking for a way to do that yesterday and could not find email link on their web page, so I emailed the booth from carsoup.com. Amazingly, they did not choose my question ("why is your director incompetent") to read on the air http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  18. The old director went to AZ, see reply #114.
  19. Y'know, I like Jeff Cirillo and all...but watching last night, I kept thinking how about dumping him, Trenni, Davey Nelson, and Coshun and use the money to hire someone who can actually direct a baseball game. I can not recall ever before watching baseball broadcasts and seeing (or not seeing) plays being missed or nearly missed so frequently. Fox should stop wasting money on fluff and spend it on the actual production of the game itself.
  20. I would be absolutely against bunting in that situation. There are a whole lot of ways the runner can get to third in that situation and there is little chance of a double play, giving a guaranteed out would be dumb (even in the bottom of the 9th). I'm no lover of Yost, but I'd sure rather have him managing than some on here who think a bunt is the way to go any time anyone is on base with less than 2 outs. Bunting the runner to 3rd means you need a fly ball or a hit or some mistake to score him. With the runner on second a hit is still likely to score him and if you don't bunt you have 3 shots at getting the hit...that seems like it should lead to pretty good odds of getting a run. In addition, two fly balls score a run, etc. In addition attempting a bunt does not guarantee success. Might miss or foul off two and be left with only one strike to swing the bat, might pop it up, etc. What is the success rate for bunting?
  21. That's nuts, I sure would not do that job for $7.50 to $9 per hour...unless if maybe my only alternative was McD's for the same pay. But I guess if they can get qualified people to do it at that wage, that is what the pay is going to be.
  22. I have no idea if there is anything to this guy's theory, but I don't see an inverted W in your picture of Bush, anyway...more like a sideways "L".
  23. Now that deserve a standing ovation.
  24. My guess is we will go on like this until Gallardo is off the DL, then one of those two unreliables will no longer be in the pen...I think that means just a few more days. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
