  1. This also seems to coincide with a database server reboot on: Aug 08, 2013 at 11:38 AM My earlier request was for a Database server move (but they might be able to fix it). The main reason for my request was the last 10 days showing increasing slowness without reason. Still awaiting response. Lousy morning but things do appear better at the moment. It changes and with no pattern.
  2. Just updating this topic: Yes, we are aware that this board has been incredibly slow and throwing 5xx errors for since approx 1AM your time. Another issue has been identified and is being brought to the attention of the host. When there is a "fix" it may not be all that seamless and there may be another spell of issues as a result of this. Rest assured that I am regularly monitoring and want this board the best it can be for you guys. I also have a very recent database backup sitting on this machine, so do not wory about your data. This is in addition to other backups we have available to us. I would hope that today anything noticed in the last 10 days should be resolved. That still leaves longer-term plans to be addressed, which can only make things even better. Hang in there!
  3. Yeah, I am seeing that myself and it was not even that busy. I made some suggestions and recommendations earlier today. My gut is saying that some of you guys are either unable to access or are giving up trying. Something has to be done. I am more than willing to do it. I need the OK though. I had not been checking Lambeauleap but I will now. Thanks for the heads-up. For those unaware (as yet), some processes have been taking 20 or more seconds to complete. In the early hours, this board was inaccessible for around an hour. You are quite right: this is not good enough. It will also get worse if nothing is done. Please, by all means more of you post your thoughts and feelings. Let staff know your experiences.
  4. I'm hoping that you should find some improvement from here on. Much has been checked and a likely cause "removed". The status will be monitored over the next few days (as will this topic). Large topics have been identified, leaving staff with the task of finding an appropriate point to split. This board is a little on the large side (& growing) and can be quite well frequented at times. I think it is to be expected that occasional slowness will happen at popular times. If this is persistent though, please do bring it to someone's attention. (If you are that person, please also bring it to my attention.)
  5. You're welcome kalle. Glad to see you back! To explain to later readers, we have several IP range blocks in place to prevent traffic from web hosts from accessing the board. No bona-fide user accesses from a hosting; they access from an Internet Service Provider. 99% of spam is automated and 95% originates from web hostings (they use proxies) and some more than others. These automated requests read & store topics for later use, attempt to post as guests and attempt to register to gain access, either to post or try and harvest email addresses. Being automated, they can do this very rapidly, even several times per second. It is not about keeping the board spam free - although this does help - it is about ensuring genuine humans can gain as much of the server resources as possible. Without these bans, the board could be ground to a halt and you, the members, would suffer. This issue was very strange because kalle's IPs were not actually present in any ban; if they had been, this would have been a very quick fix. It would appear that traffic was routed through a server belonging to a very well known spam host in France. Why that should be, I do not know yet. Unfortunately, kalle fell foul of this and we had to get him to test the security measures until we could identify the problem one. It may have taken some time but once we were aware and able to work on it, the issue was resolved within 24 hours and 9 tests performed by kalle.
  6. Casey did update the software. If you run into this issue elsewhere, just tap OK and continue. While the software is operational again, there may be some adjustments made in the next week or two. Please feel free to notify us of any issues you may come across.
  7. You're welcome. Put it down to how popular this board is.
  8. I think the word duplicate can cause confusion; these are actually the same post being rendered twice. This is easy to determine if: the post title, the post number, edit, delete or quote are hovered and the post number noted from the status. Timing cannot be determined but that date coincides with the database being worked hard. All posts in this category as well as a few select others have been checked and repaired now, so this issue should not be present. If it is seen again, then it will be fresh and can simply be dealt with by resynchronizing the topic. Another way for members to alert moderators to funky topics/posts would be to use the report post button http://forum.brewerfan.net/styles/bf_default/imageset/en/icon_post_report.gif on the top right of the post. This has the advantage of including a link.
  9. This is what I was curious about. It is only one post, except it is appearing more than once. Appearing on separate pages does make sense.
  10. Well spotted and exactly what was needed to resolve this. TooLiveBrew, I have fixed the topic you linked to. If we are linked to these funky topics they can easily be repaired. Ideally links to the individual posts are best, so we can double-check things. To get a direct link to a post, just click the post number on the top right of the post. This sort of thing does happen and perhaps it occurs more when the board is busy? This board certainly pushes the limits of the server at times. There is a tool provided to repair these topics (Moderators check out the resync topic option in the MCP), therefore it is a known issue and likely one that will not be resolved. As a one-off, I am going to check and repair all topics on this board as necessary within the next 24 hours. I may have to pick a quieter time to do this though. After then, please do not hesitate to report occurrences of this and any moderator can resolve it in under a minute.
  11. Sorry about the sporadic slowness when it comes to making posts. I've been biting off more than the server can chew. I only just became aware and will take smaller bites.
  12. forum.brewerfan.net will have been slow due to how hard I was working the server. If you mean just brewerfan.net, that is unrelated. Unfortunately, I have no access there.
  13. The last estimate I gave Casey was indeed the possibility of 5 days. One hour's sleep and shifting from plan A to plan D (yeah, B&C were tried too), did get the job completed. All features are back up but there may be some slowness until we get the size of the database cut down considerably. The search function is a very greedy one.
  14. Search is currently down and being worked on. Some features are also disabled to free up some resources.
  15. This should now be fixed. If it is still happening for you in IE10, please clear your "Temporary Internet Files" and reboot.
  16. When signing-in, make sure the "Log me on automatically each visit" is checked.
  17. Yeah, I have the Chrome bit in mine as well as a lot of other stuff. I've almost exclusively used Chromium here. The way you talk, anyone would think I lurked here looking for issues. They'd be right of course.
  18. I was wondering why I wasn't showing there with Chromium ... then I remembered! Google Analytics are blocked! That raises a further interesting question. I would think it more likely that a non-IE user would block Google Analytics than an IE user. Now you know what that means?
  19. I just came across this. It sure emphasizes what we are talking about here.
  20. Yep, it is a dieing browser thankfully! If it continues at it's current rate of demise, it will disappear off the face of the earth before the end of 2015. Oh, wait a minute, whatever will the spambots use then? That accounts for around 9%, therefore by projection IE will never die but nobody will actually use it at some point in 2014.
  21. Even easier: middle-click the link. This leaves the choice up to the user. The only modern browser without spellcheck is IE. You would be well advised to change to a better and more secure browser. For IE users, there is: http://www.iespell.com/ The more that gets added, the slower things become for everyone. This is always worth bearing in mind.
  22. Thanks. The issue has hopefully been resolved but we would appreciate any reports if it happens again.
  23. It is a board setting and not an individual one. I bumped it up to 20. Too high and it will impact performance. We'll have to compromise here.
  24. Great feedback so far, guys. The only reason I am saying one and only one is that whatever is installed affects everyone, whether they use it or not. For each additional feature added, there is a cost in speed and performance. On balance, an app works great because it does generate some additional load and it does generate some additional bandwidth initially but at the end of the day, this actually reduces the bandwidth used. Bandwidth is not a great concern but if a few thousand of you all hit at the same time, it might be. So, all I am saying is that adding one app would probably be a great idea but adding more than one would probably cause an undesirable affect overall.
