  1. Whitewater class of 85 (though I should have graduated in 84--poor work ethic). I worked at the Brookfield Marriott (now Sheraton) for pretty much the duration on weekends and during summers, though for one summer I umpired local youth league baseball with Brookfield Park & Rec Department. I was a decent umpire on the bases, but behind the plate, I think in retrospect that I was very pitcher friendly, with lots of called third strikes, to the aghast and muttering of many Brookfield youth.
  2. I suspect not. I never see kids just playing baseball for fun. Occasionally I'll drive past a park where there is an organized league game going on, but in my neighborhood, we used to play either softball, football or basketball nearly every day after school, and during the summer--and I just don't see that going on anymore. Too bad for today's kids, as I had a terrific time running around and playing sports.
  3. I think I would retain ownership of the ball, but then send it to Cooperstown for display. I love the Hall of Fame, and try to get there once a year if I can. My dream retirement is to work there as an educator or tour guide--even as a volunteer. But I suspect it would be awesome to see a featured item on display, knowing that I was directly responsible for putting it there.
  4. People don't need to qualify their fandom for me to believe they are fans. This isn't a contest, it's a baseball team, and there are some who know more about its history than I do, and some that know less. I love that there is a new interest in the team, and welcome any and all to root for the home team.
  5. Most of my sleep problems have been as a result of being dehydrated. I usually down a bottle of water before sleep, and that does me well. I may have to get up once to give some of that back, but then I collapse, and awake pretty refreshed. I wouldn't recommend even OTC products for unintented uses. If you're sick that's one thing, but just to sleep? I'd pass on that one.
  6. Destroy that dog immediately! And charge that parent with neglect, for leaving a 2-year old unattended with a pitbull. Dog lovers will quickly defend this breed as loyal, lovable--whatever. I will never trust one, ever. Nearly every oddball tragic story involving dog attacks and kids centers around this vile breed and some societal misfit who owns one.
  7. It was mentioned in the Henderson thread, but I'll give him his own. Julio Franco was Designated for Assignment by the Mets today as they recalled Lastings Milledge. Farewell Julio. . .yours has been a long and interesting baseball journey. And with that roster move, I am now older than every single major leaguer on every single roster. This is worse than 20 years ago when all of Hef's playmates were younger than me. (updated title -TC)
  8. I love Rickey, but this is an act of extreme cruelty to any of the Mets players who use English as a second language. Seriously, it's largely a veteran club, with Beltran, Delgado, LoDuca, Valentin, Green & Alou. I don't know how much he'll impact their game. You would think that they would be pretty well established in terms of what works for them. If he can work more with Reyes, Wright & Lastings Milledge, then he'll be a good hire.
  9. I don't see a way around this unless all news outlets decided to only run text (no pics) about high school athletic events, which is frankly impossible. One way around it is for adult bloggers to show a little restraint when it comes to posting pictures of high school students. I thought I read on Deadspin that the attention started when she was a HS junior--hence my thought that she was a minor.
  10. Men spend way too much time trying to figure out what's going on in women's heads. He should ask her out, and if she wants to go, she will. If she declines, and seems aloof, he should ask again later. Repeat that a couple more times, and if she still declines, then she doesn't want to.
  11. There should be different rules for high schoolers. There should also be different rules for people who aren't seeking the attention. What if she needs security protection from a sexual predator as a result? This goes beyond a "hot or not" question, but one of "are we willing to post pictures of an unwilling minor, knowing there is a possibility that the exposure could put her at risk?"
  12. Forget what I said earlier about DP replacing Imus. PTI reported today that Boomer Esiason will soon be named as the permanent Imus replacement. He was one of the cavalcade of substitutes that cycled through that shift over the past few months. I was a little unimpressed with his performance, coming across as having an unchangable opinion on every subject and coming across as a know-it-all. Anyway, Dan Patrick doesn't appear to be headed to WFAN.
  13. I'll agree that she's very attractive (hard to argue that point). But if she had nothing to do with her sudden "fame", and doesn't want it, and just happened to be photographed while at her high school track meet, then isn't this clearly a case where the argument can be made that the internet is harmful to her and her family? Hopefully it will all blow over and she'll soon be back to life as normal.
  14. Lots of speculation that he'll end up on WFAN as the permanent replacement to Don Imus. Hopefully, they'll keep Charles McCord, and the two of them will be able to develop a relationship. I like the Dan Patrick show. He's a solid voice on the world of sports.
  15. Well that puts things into a better perspective for the Worldwide Leader. I'm glad to hear that they have been so benevolent over the years, and that their contributions to Make-a-Wish go beyond the segments we see on SportsCenter. If what you say in your post is true--and I have no reason to think its not--then I stand corrected, and applaud their efforts.
  16. I hear you Schlitz. . .but here's where I'm going in my criticism. I love donating to charitable causes. There aren't many things that give me pleasure like knowing that I can make a difference in making the world a better place. I would encourage everyone to seek out a charity that matters to them, and to give freely and abundantly. It certainly benefits the cause, and it also benefits the giver, with a sense of pride and the knowledge that you're doing good works in the world. Now onto the ESPN stuff. . .I honestly can't say that I've seen the full context of these spots--so you can whack me around and call me a blowhard with all the gusto that you can muster, and all I can do is take it. But here's what I suspect it is. . . ESPN doing a wonderful thing for a very needy child. And then they take every opportunity they can to tell you all about it. Why do they need to toot their own horn? Why do they have to draw attention to themselves, and paint themselves in a glowing light? It just seems exploitive to use this kind, wonderful gesture, and then make tv programming out of it, in between Yankees highlights and NFL offseason reports. Sure it's a good thing they're doing. But it's like the (Red) project that the Gap and other companies are doing to raise money for African AIDS relief. That project really seems more about hawking T-shirts and other premium priced consumer products than about supporting the real cause. Now I'll stand and take my lumps. . .
  17. I wish they would do something nice for a sick child, and not exploit the gesture and the child to create tv programming for their network. It rings hollow when they do something great, and then tell and show you the great thing they did.
  18. I don't know about the whole roid rage theory. That his wife was bound at the ankles and wrists makes it seem much more premeditated. But I don't want to dismiss steroids at all, as they have been linked to depression, brain damage, mania (coincidentally odd word) and other mental illness problems. As well, concussions have been linked to those kind of mental health problems. I would guess Benoit would have been concussed a few times in his career. Its a horrific situation, and I suspect it will permanently affect how (or if) I watch wrestling in the future. I couldn't really get into tonight's show, as at one point, Tazz commented that one guy was trying to choke out another. Maybe it was a slip, but it still made me shudder.
  19. WWE.com is reporting that Chris Benoit has died--along with his family. Ugh. I just don't know how much longer I can watch this stuff, as these performers are going too soon. We'll see what the cause of death was, but another horrible tragedy.
  20. I'm pretty averse to brand new technology, at least until the bugs are worked out. I saw a report on CNN Headline News a couple of days ago about the phone, and how the internet content is likely to be very slow at the beginning. Apple ads are usually amazing. And eventually, their products catch up to the hype. I'm going to pass on the phone until I'm convinced that it will actually make my life better.
  21. "School officials can't be responsible for what happens the other hours of the day, and I would think the relationship developed much more outside of school," said Brian Shaw, an attorney for the school district. I don't think that's true. I would think a school district would have at least some responsibility for any teacher's conduct as long as the teacher is employed by that district. The statement was made by the district's attorney, so what should you expect? But I would think there would be some very pointed and legitimate questions raised at the next school board meeting. But enough about the district. The real creep in this story is the coach, of course. He's a complete predator, and is worthy of any and all criticism.
  22. www.wwe.com/inside/news/sherripasses Women's wrestling superstar Sherri Martel died today at age 49. She was one freaky character--and a woman who looked like she could beat the crap out of you. Man, that's a tough business, and it seems to have no gender bias in terms of premature death. RIP you scary psycho. . .and I mean that with all due respect.
  23. Geez, Reed. . . With waterfront property like that, what do you care if a couple of racoons come along for free lunch and a view of the sunset? Set up a lawnchair down at the shore, crack open a frosty one, and enjoy your own little version of Animal Planet. I would let them be until they start to cause actual damage. Are they getting into garbage cans? Are they gnawing at wood, or ripping up any landscaping? If you really want them to leave, I'd discontinue with the bird feeder for awhile. Other than that, I'd enjoy the show.
  24. What about live traps? You trap them (probably one at a time), and then take them someplace else and release them. . . Probably best (most humane) to wait until they're old enough to fend for themselves, or else you'd be releasing them to certain death in their new home.
  25. Good for you, Bernie. . . If you can at all work it where your HOF days are weekdays (vs. weekends), I think you'll like it that much more. They can handle pretty good crowds, so weekends aren't bad, but there's nothing like walking through that place when its nearly empty. Very cool. . .
