  1. Yes I'm doubting it Other than a much needed upgrade in LF, platoon mates needed at 1B & 2B, and 3B depth for the inevitable Aramis injury? You do realize that Khris Davis was third on the team in slugging pct, just a few points behind both Gomez and Lucroy and ahead of Braun, tied for 3rd in RBI, 2nd in doubles and HR, had more extra base hits than Braun, and more walks than Segura or Gennett and he did this in his first full season in the major leagues?
  2. OH MY GOD WHAT'S WRONG WITH DOUG? Prayers to his family. I think he's referring to the fact that Melvin is 62, and has had a long run. Now he might want to stick around until he's 70, but the GM job is all encompassing so I can't imagine why he'd want to. Most guys either get kicked up to an executive level over the GM, retire or get fired.
  3. Pirates will be fine not over spending on Martin after a career year. Martin timed it perfectly.
  4. No. The Brewers equivalent would have been Peralta and Nelson ad neither of those guys is at the same level as Miller or Jenkins. I disagree pretty strongly with that. Peralta was better than Miller this past season. He's at least on par with him going forward. Jenkins was #14 on Cardinals prospect list and his number in Florida State League don't blow me away. He's a long way from the big leagues. Nelson was the most dominant starter in the PCL and was #1 prospect in Brewer system. That being said, since July the Cards have surrendered two controllable young starters in Miller and Joe Kelly and a decent prospect in the minors for a return of two guys who are FA after this year, Heyward and Lackey, and a reliever who's essentially replacing Neshek. That's not much of a return.
  5. This. This is something to be thankful for. It's a tough role. Schafer's never played enough to get in any kind of groove. His BABIP of .254 suggests some bad luck.
  6. I don't think so. I doubt Wren projects as a starting major league CF and I don't think he displaces Taylor as the logical successor to Gomez in 2017. Just gives them some added speed in the high minors that could be useful in a year or two off the major league bench. Schafer's running low on options and he won't be able to be shuttled back and forth much longer.
  7. With less power. Not sure about the defense. Statistically, looks more similar to former Brewer farmhand Lee Haydel. Lots of stolen bases and very little power. Assist total, 5 in 180 games, does not speak well for his arm. Still he moved up quickly to AA in just his second pro year and he can get on base pretty well and he did have 8 triples last year. With Taylor figuring to be in AA, wonder where he'll start out?
  8. There's definitely some gems out there that fit a profile the Brewers could use and I think Satin is one of them. He was completely blocked in NY by Wright and Murphy. I actually like him more than Jimenez.
  9. Long time player and manager Alvin Dark has passed away at 92. Dark had over 2,000 hits as a player ending his career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1960. He followed that up with 994 wins as a manager over 13 seasons including an NL pennant with the Giants in 1962 and the last of the three straight World Championships in Oakland in 1974. A case could be made that Dark belongs on the HOF with his combined record as a player and manager. Sad day any time a remaining Milwaukee Brave passes.
  10. Should they make a deal with the devil and go for Josh Satin? He can play 3B, 2B, and 1B and has a career .397 OBP in the minors.
  11. John Sickels just did his look at the Braves ranked Kubitza as their #6 prospect, giving him a B- ranking. Not a bad looking player. He would fit the Brewers time frame perfectly - put him at AAA for 2015 and, if he does well, give him the inside track in 2016 at 3B. Here's Sickel's review: High strikeouts are a major concern (see Mike Olt and Matt Davidson). Given Atlanta's recent history, I can understand their willingness to shop him.
  12. My eyes glazed over when I read Arcia going to TB for Loney. I think Melvin did a lot better for Estrada than Smoak. Don't see the need to non-tender a guy like Kintzler either. Yeah he didn't have a great year, but he's not going to command much in arby and they are short on arms in pen right now with departures of FA's and Estrada and unknown health of Henderson and Thornburg.
  13. I think the Braves could be pursuing several tracks in search of pitching. Guys like Gattis, Justin Upton are dangled more for a guy with top half of rotation stuff and some control beyond 2015.. B.J. Upton has negative value. They look at Lohse and figure he'd give them what Harang gave them in the 4th spot in 2014 without long term commitment.
  14. You may think Lohse is simply better that Gallardo FBF, but the stats say they were nearly identical in 2014. Gallardo's 7 years younger, and if he repeats his 2014 numbers, Brewers could well extend him a QO and thus get something out of him should he go FA. Even if he posts another solid year are the Brewers going to give Lohse a QO at 37? Maybe, but not likely. I wouldn't be opposed to dealing either as that opens up a spot for Nelson and frees up some money to shop for a candidate to add back some depth to rotation. I'm just suggesting Braves have had interest in Lohse in the past. Gallardo's got a very good record against the Braves and they could well be targeting him. I wouldn't dismiss Gosselin entirely. He had a breakout year at AAA : .344/.379/.487, and was ok in his major league trial. He lacks the ideal power you'd like for 3B, but he has played there and he's a logical guy for 2B platoon this year.
  15. We do know the Braves have inquired about Lohse in the past. Gosselin and Carpenter for Lohse and Quintana? Gosselin's splits vs. lefties in AAA were very impressive: .361/.412/.536. Have to think he'd make a nice platoon partner for Scooter and be a candidate for 3B at some point too. I like the Kubitza suggestion as well.
  16. Agreed, but the old man who owns the team figures he can't take it with him I guess and where would they have been last year without Martinez? Not many guys have career years at 35. Can't believe he'll be anywhere near as productive at 38 and 39.
  17. Mets are also rumored to be talking with White Sox about Alexei Ramirez which is much more realistic. Sox want Noah Syndergaard or Rafael Montero. My guess is the Mets would do Montero for Ramirez. As for Cuddyer, the red flag for me is Cuddyer turned down $15 million QO for security of two years at significantly less per year. That tells me even Cuddyer thinks he might be year to year so he took the 2 year offer instead of risking his value sinking considerably. Still one has to like the Mets young rotation, so any offensive improvement could propel them into serious contenders.
  18. I'm not sure Brewers won't deal Parra if they can. At around $6 million, he'd be a very expensive backup and there might be teams out there that see him as a starter. Sanchez has 3 innings experience in the OF. If they need a guy to be platoon at 1B and 5th OF, I'd rather they just look from within at a guy like Rogers or Halton both of whom have played extensively in the OF in the minors. I'd also be fine limiting Sanchez to 1B and going with Clark as a backup corner OF.
  19. Sanchez (1B) and Beckham (middle infield) are also intriguing as platoon/bench players. If they were to trade Davis, Viciedo would make a lot of sense.
  20. Shields has surrendered an average of 27 HR per year pitching in Tropicana and Royals Stadium. Odds are that would go up in Miller Park. He might fit the payroll better but he turns 33 in December. No thanks.
  21. McGehee had the same number of RBI as Ramirez did post All Star game: 23, and more for the entire year. He won't ever cost anything near $10 million a year much less $14 million that the Brewers are paying for ARam.
  22. They'd have to deal both Gallardo and Lohse this year and likely Garza next year. But a true ace is certainly worth 2 number 3's and Fiers, Nelson, and Peralta are controllable for next 3-5 years.
  23. Not sure where you are getting your numbers. Baseball-Reference had Davis with 2.1 and Baseball Prospectus had him at 2.8. I thought B-P had Ramirez at 0.6 and Baseball Reference has him at 1.4. Sandoval was 3.1 on B-P and 3.3 on B-R, Davis wasn't the problem. He had 61 extra base hits. Ramirez had 39.
  24. Casey and David Freese top the list of FA third basemen after this year. Unless Jimenez or Rogers excels picking up the pieces this year for Ramirez, Brewers could be in the market.
  25. There's openings in Brewer pen for lefties and Strong seems intent on seizing an opportunity.
