    The problem isn't how many guys are in the rotation. The problem is this team isn't scoring runs. Somewhat predictably Mitchell has hit a wall after playing more games than any year in his career. Speaking of walls, Lara isn't just hitting them on defense, he's hit one in the batter's box. Lockridge is on the 25 man roster and offers nothing with the bat. Years of being a full time catcher have caught up with Contreras. Naylor was a good move in theory, unfortunately he's still not hitting at AAA. Other than that, Brewers ignored adding hitting at the deadline, when there were useful if not exciting bats that changed teams. They badly need Pratt and Frelick back in the lineup.

    What's worse, a chase rate that's a bit high or simply refusing to challenge a strike call on a ball that's more than an inch off the outside corner that Andrew Vaughn has been doing all season? Being challenge shy always results in a strike, while swinging at that pitch an inch or two off the plate at least has a chance to do damage.

    I know it's a few generations ago, but both Yount and Molitor played a grand total of 64 minor league games each before each debuted in the majors and never looked back. Yount played his minor league games in short season A ball which essentially was advanced rookie ball right out of high school. Molitor had played 3 seasons at the University of Minnesota, so he played in Class A Midwest League the year he was drafted.

    What makes you think Lara will sit? Mitchell is lost at the plate and badly needs a day or two off. That being said if Lara continues to selfishly waste pitch reviews on balls clearly in the zone, he could use some time off.

    Great stuff but no command. He's not the first and won't be the last. He had a nice long runway to show improvement. How many unproven guys get 4 uninterrupted months in a major league rotation when there's been no progress? He's not pitching in Coors. He's got an above average defense behind him. He turns 26 next month. What's his excuse? This is the top level of the sport. He's had more front office support than most players because he was a key piece in a big offseason deal they made. It's put up or shut up time. The postseason looms. There's big series looming against a hot Cubs team that's still within range. September callup? Why? They have a 6 man rotation right now and are a bullpen arm short. That spot is reserved for Grant Anderson, who might not be a guy you want in a big moment, but has performed at an acceptable major league level for quite a while. Give Sproat a mental break till next spring and hope that helps.

    Well the bat I wanted went to Cubs. Scares the heck out of me that Mitchell runs out of gas the last couple months as does Lara.

    Huh? Five innings of shutout ball vs. the Cubs in his last start, with one hit allowed. Prior to that, 6 innings allowing 1 run on 7 hits with 8 K's vs the Reds. His last start in June and first one in July were bad, but he's been really good at times throughout the year. Took a no hitter into the 8th against the Brewers in June.

    If there's one spot in the organization where the Brewers are thin, it's starting pitching that's close to major league ready. Crow has been mentioned but I don't think the ceiling for a 5'10" guy who doesn't throw all that hard is very exciting. I get the Brewers not wanting to give up Henderson but what about Gasser? Why is the fit between Mize and the Brewers imperfect? Mize WAR this season is 2.9, a tick behind Skubal's 3.0 and sitting on 86 innings, he's still roughly 70 innings short of what he logged in 25 in regular season and playoffs combined. His recent outings have been fine as well.

    The Brewers need to find a RH bat with some pop that can help nullify the lefthanded starting pitching of both the Dodgers and the Cubs. Both those teams lean heavily on LH starting pitching. Yeah they have Lockridge back but he does not possess the slug element to put a run on the board with one swing. My suggestion is they call the Mets about re-acquiring Tyrone Taylor, who's been on a hot streak for a while. TT has a .900 OPS vs RHP in 2026. Overall he's rediscovered slug as part of his arsenal with a career best .503 slugging percentage this season.

    Why not go full reunion? Peralta and Tyrone Taylor for Crow and Jett Williams? Taylor has a .938 OPS vs. LHP this year.

    There's way too many Brewer hitters not challenging borderline outrageous pitches. Worst offenders? Turang, Yelich, Chourio and Bauers. Part of it seems to be they've had success in the past and don't want to be up there judging pitches. Yet they all react with surprised looks when a pitch 2 inches out of the zone is called a strike. The situation of course matters, but I'm much more aggravated when the calls that are so obvious are let go by regardless of the situation. My goodness Chourio did it in every at bat Friday night.

    The timing of this deal allows them to essentially give McCullers a "tryout" period prior to the trade deadline. If they don't see enough from him in 3 or 4 starts, they can pivot to one of the more attractive starting pitcher targets.

    They have the means to go get a starter. Recent developments makes it quite likely they will.

    There's only one way to know if that's true. Pratt doesn't look ready either but development isn't limited to minor leagues.

    Detmers has never logged 150 major league innings in one season and he's on pace for around 185-190 this year. His last 3 starts have been poor. Giving up multiple prospects seems like a risk not worth taking when Brewers already have an adequate 3rd lefty starter in Gasser available.

    Not just for the rotation. He threw 50 dominant pitches, fanning 7. Would think he'd be good for 65-70 his next outing. Would that be with the Brewers for a 4-5 inning stint?

    I would DFA Kuhnel or Anderson and make a reasonable offer to the Angels for Kirby Yates. Yes he's old and had a few injuries but he's still getting hitters out and he's not going to meltdown

    I would take 39 year old reliever Kirby Yates off the Angels hands. He's a been there done that bullpen arm actually having a decent season with 25 Ks in 17 innings.

    Brewers" starting pitching is a strength of the team. They have two of the top starters in the league for the first half of the season. The guys behind them are all quality arms as well. Yes, other than Woodruff, the experience is a little light but these guys aren't kids either. Gasser and Drohan are both 27. Sproat will be 26 in September and Henderson is 24. I'm pretty confident that one or two of those guys will emerge as legit playoff contributors. They're all close right now when healthy. The only starting pitching move that makes sense would be to see if they can get Skubal. That's the move that makes them a World Series favorite and the Brewers have never had a deeper system than they have right now to make it happen. 56 years is long enough. Go for the gold. As for 3rd base, there's not a guy out there that moves the needle for me. Maybe they bring up Andrew Fischer in September. But I'll take the defense Ortiz provides and so will the pitching staff. Rengifo was acquired to provide some pop at third. How did that work out? The bullpen needs a little help, but a healthy Hall and/or Koenig might be enough.
