  1. His numbers in Japan were very good. That's not always the case with guys who go over there. I like him more than Juan Fransisco. If they could get him on a minor league deal with an out clause I'd be fine with it. Bianchi is a nice utility player, but he doesn't hit with enough power to replace Ramirez over any extended period.
  2. The boy genius in Chicago is starting to get plenty of heat. The Reds just fired Dusty. The Brewers have under contract or control through at least 2016, a former if disgraced MVP in his prime, an All Star CF who had the 3rd most Wins above replacement in baseball in 2013, a 23 year old SS who was an All Star in his first full year in the majors, a burgeoning star catcher, and two rookies who showed plenty of ability in their two month major league trials. This "dumb organization" signed Gomez to a contract that is about $100 million less than he would command as a FA. They also bought out Lucroy's arbitration years for much less than he'd have gotten. They dealt a pitcher to a team for a two month rental for an All Star shortstop and 2 good pitching prospects. Yeah they are dumb indeed.
  3. Remembering back to the play Gamel was hurt on in LA, it was in part due to his inexperience both at the position and with the ballpark. He went all out for a foul ball down the line, got too close to the railing and had to awkwardly plant his leg to avoid it. While its admirable that he was going all out on the play, part of staying healthy is playing within your limitations. It was a bad break for him...and in hindsight I'm sure he would have just been content letting the ball fall harmlessly foul.
  4. "Considering our starters had a 4.20 ERA last year, having an "average" staff would be great. That's a bit of a misleading stat. They got 31 starts combined by Gorzelanny, Hellweg, Figaro, Burgos, and Fiers. The combined ERA of the 5 projected starters for 2014 was 3.79. The only way Arroyo would make sense is if Melvin got blown away by an offer for Gallardo and they needed a reasonably priced innings eater. I would prefer they look for a guy who's contract might not reflect his upside. I loved Pittsburgh's signing of Liriano last year. Not sure there's an equivalent out there this year, but the Brewers could take a chance on a guy like that for a lot less money than Arroyo is looking for and be able to walk away from it if it doesn't work out.
  5. Asking isn't unreasonable. Getting it from Brewers is. Been a nice pitcher for a long time...no upside left.
  6. I don't see the Pirates has having built anything that's lasting either. They struck gold on Burnett, Grilli, and Liriano, guys other teams had given up and passed over on. The Brewers fell to the bottom in 2002, not out of some grand design, but poor drafting and decision making by the likes of Bando and Dean Taylor. Once at bottom they did the right thing and built from within. This team isn't near where they were from 2000-2002.
  7. That is unfortunate. I don't think that is necessarily the case. I think Melvin would prefer a lefty hitter at 1B for obvious reasons if they deal Aoki, which is why Francisco is still in the picture. There are some left handed hitting 1B FA who won't break the bank, and there are some that could be had via trade too.
  8. It has more to do with them losing 5 straight to the Mets and Pirates at the end of the regular season than the one they lost to Pittsburgh plus what was for them a gut wrenching loss to the Brewers when Sean Halton took all time favorite Brewer patsy Zach Duke deep walk off style to cap a huge comeback. So twice now in his career, the turning point for Dusty's tenure rested on two unlikely guys. Steve Bartman in Chicago, and Sean Halton.
  9. Even if they kept him, and dumped Francisco, there was no way the Brewers would go to Arizona with Gamel assured of a roster spot. If they don't sign Hart, they still are extremely likely to add a 1B from outside the organization and will also give Morris, Halton and Lucroy time there in spring. Prior to Hart's injury last winter, Gamel was talked about as depth at corner OF spots. The play of Davis and Gindl was impressive enough not to consider somebody who's missed almost 2 full season. In reality they did him a favor, as he needed a place that would give him a longer spring look.
  10. Exactly what I was thinking. It's hard to imagine a team that was shutout 4 times in 6 games by the Brewers has a prayer against this Dodger staff. I guess it shows how weak the AL East really was that they managed 96 wins. I'm thinking Dodgers in 4 or 5.
  11. I can see it now. Royals are in process of frittering away first playoff spot in decades with Ned Yost making one bad decision after another, when to the rescue comes Dale Svuem with 2 weeks left in the season.
  12. Well the Cubs do have a spot open at 3B, after the crown jewel of the Garza trade, Mike Olt hit .168 at AAA. I can't imagine anyone using up a major league roster spot on guy who hasn't seen live pitching since May 2012 and who has yet to establish major league credentials and isn't very good defensively. It would be one thing if he had options. They must see him as a PH. I thought for sure some AL team would take a flier on him on a minor league deal.. That's not to say he'll stay on the Cub roster till March though. Ask Jeff Bianchi.
  13. I don't think you can know that the Cards, Reds, and Pirates will be as good as they were this year. Frankly I doubt it. You bring up the Nats. They went from 98 wins in 12 to 86 this year, with basically the same team. The Brewers from July 1 on went 42-40. That was 1.5 games worse than Pittsburgh, and 3 games worse than Cincinnati. I think they have a ways to go to match up with St. Louis but a healthy Brewer team can compete evenly with Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. If everyone is healthy, and Davis replaces Aoki in the lineup and Hart is back healthy, their number 8 hitter figures to be either Davis and his .949 OPS or Gennett and his .324 BA. That is one deep lineup.
  14. Halton's best bet is as a RH bench bat that has some versatility. For whatever reason Melvin always skips over him when mentioning first base options. He's going to be fighting for that 25th spot on the roster in spring. It might come down to he or Gindl depending on whether they want a lefty or righty bat or who they want playing everyday in AAA. If a lineup spot opens for Davis, unless they pick up a veteran bat, he's got a chance. Bianchi and Maldanado are the only two RH bench options in that scenario. Halton has more pop than Bianchi.
  15. Gennett shouldn't bat any higher than 7th. He shouldn't be getting a lot of PA's a year. Gennett might have 190 hits batting 2nd. I'm not comparing the two, but you might want to take a peak at Paul Molitor's rookie year: 19 walks in 556 PA. If a guys not prone to walk a lot anyway, batting him in front of Braun will still insure he'll get a lot of fastballs. Plus he'll often get to hit with a hole on the right side. I still think Boston would be very interested in Aoki if they lose Ellsbury and they have guys, Carp or Nava, that the Brewers could use.
  16. Both are in their late 20's coming off serious injuries with no real record of accomplishment beyond AAA. I can't say I'm surprised. Its the nature of the game. Melvin said it yesterday. You have to stay healthy and on the field. That's true in any professional sport.
  17. Melvin hinted that they would look at adding a starting pitcher in the offseason. I like the idea of adding a veteran arm that may be coming off an injury who would take a minor league deal with an opt out date or who would be cheap enough that he's not guaranteed a rotation spot. That would give them someone to turn to other than the relatively untested Nelson or Hellweg if there's an injury or ineffectiveness that prompts a change.
  18. Melvin decried the teams poor starts the last couple years. Left unsaid that Weeks has been one of the culprits contributing to the slow starts. If they are going to emphasize getting off to a better start next year, it's hard to believe that would include Weeks.
  19. Aoki's numbers really don't tell the entire story. He's the kind of guy that when he's going well, really can get under the skin of a pitcher. He gets hits on pitcher's pitches and not many guys are capable of doing that in this age of home run or nothing. I think the Brewers can use Segura and Gennett at the top of the order, and be fine so he might have more value elsewhere.
  20. No Attanasio believes he owes it to loyal fans to put the best product on the field every year. Knowing you are not going to the postseason every year doesn't mean you don't try to every year. What the Cubs and Astros are doing is a joke. I'd like to see Aoki traded if they can get something of value in return and to keep open roster spots for as many of the group of Gindl, Schafer, Halton and Davis as possible. I think the chemistry among that group and pitchers like Thornburg and Wooten contributed greatly to the success the last couple months. All those guys came through the system together and experienced major league baseball together which made for a good clubhouse.
  21. Gennett hit .206/.270/.235 in Arizona in March. Weeks hit .288/.356/.558. Lets hope Roenicke doesn't have those numbers staring him in the face next spring. His Arizona judgment in the past hasn't been good. I can't imagine Weeks will be in great shape coming off a torn hamstring. I took Melvin's comments to mean it's Scooter's job to lose though. He especially raved about his defense and lumped him in with Gomez, Segura and Lucroy as he talked about being strong up the middle at a reasonable cost. My guess is they don't think they can deal Weeks until he proves he's healthy in spring. I'd be shocked if Rickie is in the lineup on opening day.
  22. But he's getting paid like a well below average player, and that's where his trade value lies as the market is basically every team out there. That and his skills as a leadoff hitter. Leadoff hitters can be hard to find. I haven't done a real close analysis, but I have to believe Melvin will get inquiries on him. Melvin doesn't need to jump at any offer. All the potential internal replacements still have options. If Boston loses Ellsbury to FA, that would seem to be a good fit assuming Victorino or Aoki could play CF. Aoki for Nava perhaps?
  23. Maybe Bosio will find his way back as roving pitching instructor eventually too. Neither of those guys looked right in Cubbie blue.
  24. It's been tougher to hate the Cubs the last couple years. Sveum never had a chance. Next time I hope he actually gets to manage a major league team instead of a collection of players meant to be placeholders and pawns for some perceived gain in the future.
  25. "it is unlikely we will ever see a complete rebuild" I agree. Tearing down a franchise and basically fielding an expansion level (or worse) team will never happen under MA. Pundits, many of whom have praised the Cubs for doing just that are now warning that it will take closer to 8 years, not the initial 4-5 years first thought and there is still no guarantee it will work.
