  1. I'm of the belief we really don't know what this team is. It's May 9. They've been cold, hot, and now cold again and sit 2 games under .500. It typically takes around now to realize where a team can use some help. In past years we've seen significant changes made starting around now, such as when Axford replaced Hoffman in 2010, and last year when they were forced to move Hart to 1B and Aoki took over full time in RF, and Fiers was called up. There are guys who haven't yet played significant roles who still could. Ramirez and Hart obviously. But also pitchers like Narveson, K-Rod, Jesus Sanchez, and perhaps before it's all over, Jimmy Nelson too. Then what will happen with Weeks? Will there end up being a platoon with him and Gennett or even perhaps Green or like he did last year will he finally pull himself together and at least start producing at a level expected of an everyday player? Braun needs to go on a little tear on this trip, and it would be nice to see Lucroy have one of his hot spells too. This pitching staff seems to run hot and cold too, but they are due for a decent spell again.
  2. Ideally Gennett probably could use more time at AAA. As bad as Weeks has been, his splits against lefties are significantly better though in a very small sample and career-wise he's been better too. I like the thinking. Ultimately I believe this is the solution.
  3. Through 6 weeks, Carlos Gomez might be the league MVP. Segura is on pace for an All Star selection. Ramirez is Ramirez, and we haven't yet seen Corey Hart. There's a lot to like on this team offensively. Aoki, Braun and Lucroy haven't really hit their strides yet, but they will. Maybe at some point if Weeks doesn't hit, they have to look at bringing up Gennett to platoon there or just flat out bench him and put Yuni there to at least provide some punch down in the order. Now I think the pitching might need to undergo additional changes. Estrada looks like his magic may be gone. Maybe Narveson will return and get back in the mix. Burgos looks like a guy who will be solid. It's not yet Mother's Day. No reason to panic. Bottom line, how can you not love what Gomez is doing especially in light of his signing a team friendly contract extension prior to the season? Weeks is eventually going to hit, or he's going to be benched. I just don't think he's going to get unlimited time to turn things around.
  4. Tyler Wagner is now on my radar.
  5. Yuni isn't walking but for the most part he's swinging at strikes. In the AB he homered, he took two close but off the plate fastballs to get ahead 2-0, then fouled one off and homered on the next pitch. In his last AB, he got to a 3-2 count and swung at a ball in the zone and flied out. When he swings, he tends to put balls in play. As long as he's swinging at pitches in the zone, and not chasing, he's likely to hit for a decent average, and with some power.
  6. Can't we stick to baseball discussion? What difference does it make? He gets along fine with his teammates. I'm sure it was culture shock coming here and his focus was on making it as a player. Spanish is widely spoken in clubhouses so it's not like he couldn't communicate. Proves my point though that some anti Yuni stuff has nothing to do with his ability.
  7. There isn't such a thing as a "can't-miss pitching prospect". See Mark Prior. If a guy turns out to be a quality number 3 starter over the period of team control, you have to consider that a plus. There are tons of guys that throw in the mid 90's these days. It's command and quality of secondary pitches that's the difference at the major league level. Predicting who those guys will be is a lot guessing more than anything.
  8. It's easy to be critical following a series like we just witnessed. But it's early May and we are only 30 games in. Lets see how that young Cardinal pitching does later. The Brewers made a lot better contact off of Miller the other night than they did the first time. Well hit balls were dying on the track. I'm not convinced he won't struggle at some point. same too for some of their other guys. Meanwhile Peralta has thrown the ball well, and could have some very good stretches this year before long. Burgos has a whip under 1 through 3 starts. Nelson is throwing the ball very well and appears close to major league ready. These are all products of the farm system.
  9. Unfortunately, not only do Weeks numbers look bad (they are), but he doesn't pass the eyeball test either assuming some team would be interested enough to send a scout. He needs to be benched and sent a message. Now as for Gennett, I don't think he's the type of talent you worry about service time, but at the same time, he's still useful when the guy playing 2B isn't hitting a lick. Bring Gennett up for 3 weeks and see what he does while Weeks works in the cage and looks at tape of himself from 3-4 years ago. If he flops, then once Hart comes up, they have options with Yuni or a presumably refreshed Weeks.
  10. I wouldn't judge Lalli too harshly on less than 20 widely spaced ABs. The difference between him and some other more experienced guy is probably very little. He had a real nice AB the other day. If one comes along fine. Gonzalez has the experience edge, but he's never been a part time player much less a guy who may only see 20 AB's in a month. It's a tough role for anybody.
  11. I think it's one of those "protect the game" type of deals. It was decades before anything came out about the 51 Giants getting signs from the scoreboard at the Polo Grounds. Obviously once guys leave and go to other teams, then either the system used changes or stops all together. Since that team made it to the World Series, my guess is none of them wanted that accomplishment tainted.
  12. I'll second the Nick Shaw mention. I don't know about defense either, but his fielding percentages by minor league standards anyway are pretty good. I saw him briefly on a Brewer spring telecast, and he's slight, but he's been durable. Maybe as he gets stronger he'll add some pop to his already good on base skills.
  13. Radcliffe credited Pirate director of baseball communications, Jim Trdinich, of posting on his facebook page (later deleted), something to the effect he was tired of the "tomfoolery going on at the apparent unfriendly confines of Miller Park."
  14. It all shows how much losing at Miller Park has gotten inside the heads of the Pirates. If they think it's so easy to do, what's stopping them from doing it at PNC. It's ludicrous. The warmer weather in this series was conducive to hitting. The Pirate pitchers were awful the first two games. When teams don't hit there, it's the shadows. When the Brewers, who led the NL in runs scored playing half their games on the road, get some runs in a series, they are cheating?
  15. LaRussa complained about it a few years ago too. Maybe they had a guy out there flashing signs to their hitters in the 2011 playoff series?
  16. I don't have a link but Dave Radcliffe of Yahoo Sports has an article up that the Pirates are complaining that the Brewers are stealing signs in Miller Park. I guess that's possible but why exclude giving them to Weeks except for one game? And why just against Pittsburgh of all teams? How about we get some volunteers to bring binoculars to the OF and pretend to be flashing signs to mess with St. Louis this weekend?
  17. Gonzalez is going to be the odd man out eventually (return of Hart) and my guess is he knows it. Prince will likely be optioned to make room for Ramirez. When Gonzalez was signed it was to help transition the young SS Segura into an everyday role. He got the first shot at 1B out of respect, but didn't do much with it. Segura has shown to be a vital cog in the lineup and not needing time off to this point. If he does hit a wall later on, they are covered with Bianchi and Yuni. Bianchi is a good enough athlete that I'm sure he can handle corner OF in an emergency. His major league future is as a utility guy. Lalli is probably secure in the short term because he's a lefty bat, a bit older, can be 3rd catcher, and they don't have an alternative right now (why they are seeking a "Kotsay" type). Having him around frees them up to use Maldonado or Lucroy to pinch hit too.
  18. Gomez is leading the NL in WAR according to BR, at 2.3. He's got to be considered for player of the month honors.
  19. It's hella lucky. It doesn't make him a good hitter. The BABIP stat is a lot more than luck. Better hitters make better contact, and use the entire field and that leads to higher BABIP. I assume Gennett uses the entire field too. Now certainly .470 has a fairly large element of luck to it and it can't be sustained, but that doesn't mean Gennett is not a good hitter. He raked in the AFL a couple years ago, and I think last season was sort of an off year for him. His power is a bit underrated too. A .418 slugging percentage (his career number) for the position is pretty decent and a lot better than a guy like a Chris Getz or a Darwin Barney. Offensively, I think he projects to be similar to a Skip Schumaker. Schumaker never hit with enough pop to start in the outfield where he primarily played in the minors but he learned to play 2B well enough to get his bat in the lineup. Bottom line is I don't think Gennett will ever be a "core player", in the majors, but I think he'd be a guy who could start on a good team in the right circumstances.
  20. If I had to guess, the group of his haters has been shrinking faster than you can say Yunieski. The haters had quite a valid point if you review the 2011 season. I will never forget the ball up the middle in the NLCS that he didn't even go for (And Weeks almost got to) when it was on Yuni's side of 2nd. I also couldn't stand, how he never saw a first pitch he didn't like. He swung routinely on the first pitch and it routinely ended in a 6-4-3 double play, pop-up out to the first baseman or some other lamely hit ball. I am happy for him and glad he has found his swing. And as long as he never see's a lick at short, keeps swingning a good bat and continues to be useful at 1B / 2B / 3B ... well then keep on keeping on, Yuni I notice you don't even mention that Yuni hit .333/.333/.542 against the Cardinals in that series with 5 RBI. He wasn't the reason they lost. The pitching was awful. Yuni had lots of big hits in the 2nd half of that season too.
  21. If I had to guess, the group of his haters has been shrinking faster than you can say Yunieski.
  22. Yunibomber strikes again! My goodness. I've been a backer of his, but even I'm stunned.
  23. bianchi started his rehab assignment on 13 april. can rehab assignments last 30 days, or is that only with pitchers? He's got 30 days. My guess is they'll use all 30 to get him AB's before he's called up and has to sit. If I had to guess, they'll deal for a different type backup and he'll replace Gonzalez who will be dealt or let go.
  24. Whether one big night signals the end of his slump or not, it's likely now that they'll go with him. Mentally it probably did a lot for him. In the long run though I think he's what he is, a very talented but very streaky player, who probably has his best years behind him and it would be in the Brewers interest to listen to trade offers should teams like Baltimore who are desperate for a 2B come calling.
