  1. Nice try guys. Talking yourselves into how much better having A-Ram, A-Gon and Gamel over Casey, Yuni and Prince doesn't make them better. Those 3 had 4 hits between them in a 3 game series. Casey, Yuni and Prince combined for 9 and Yuni and Casey only played 2 games. Gonzalez blew a double play ball Saturday and got extremely fortunate the umpire called it a transition drop (it wasn't).
  2. Brewers may not be getting respect from baseball experts, but on the Chicago tribune's NBA rankings they are 19th! We know Greinke and Loe are tough on the boards, Rickie Weeks is deadly from beyond the arc, and Tony Plush can guard anybody, but who knew Aoki was Japan's version of Jeremy Lin?
  3. Nashville loses 6-2. Good outing for Peralta, not so much for Victor Garate. Halton goes 4 for 4, with a solo HR in his last AB. I've been touting the much overlooked Halton for a couple years and he made quite a statement in his first AAA game.
  4. Caleb Gindl has been hit by batted balls running the bases twice in one game both off the bat of Sean Halton. Are you kidding me? You might see that once or twice a season for an entire team. I'm sure Sean Halton will take the hits. Anyone know if they were sure outs or hits anyway?
  5. I'm not sure I'd replace Izturis with Hall, but his versatility (and RH Bat) would seem to make him more valuable off the bench than Ishikawa. He certainly has more of a track record than does Conrad. As to brwsfan's comments, I don't think Hall would have any objection to returning especially since he's without a job nor do I think the Brewers would have a problem bringing him back in a bench role.
  6. Bill Hall is now officially available. He chose free agency when he didn't make the Yankee roster. Would seem to be a perfect fit. He'd only have to start vs. the Reds and on Mother's Day.
  7. Roenicke's comment that they kept Ishikawa to fill Kotsay's PH role is both interesting and revealing. So if Ishikawa is filling Kotsay's role, what is Aoki doing? One would have to believe they are shopping either Morgan or Aoki.
  8. My guess is they were trying to move Ishikawa but couldn't find any takers and didn't want to eat any money, so for now he'll be on the roster. I find it puzzling that after sending Conrad to Nashville that they haven't released Almonte. I don't see the need for 2 utility guys in their 30's at Nashville. I'm thinking we'll see Ishikawa late in games defensively at 1B.
  9. Vazquez is not the guy. He fanned 166 times vs. just 30 walks in 500 AAA AB's at age 29. Imagine how he'd do against big league pitchers?
  10. You mean Erick Almonte and you are forgetting Jeremy Reed who I believe was on the opening day roster and not Brandon Boggs. Morgan was also there by opening day and so was Kottaras as they started with 3 catchers last year. Including Morgan and Kottaras in that group makes it look a lot stronger. Point you are making is a good one. It's how the starting lineup performs that determines a team's fortunes. Almonte, Reed, and Nieves were quickly replaced after struggling, and If the current group goes south, they won't hesitate dumping guys.
  11. Those are crazy numbers for any pitcher especially one (Greinke) who's had one outstanding season, a few solid seasons and a couple that are mediocre. If you invest that kind of money and he turns into John Lackey, or gets hurt like Jake Peavy, or Johan Santana, you cripple the franchise for 5-7 years minimum. Want the Brewers to turn into the Mets? I don't. The Mets paid Santana $21.7 million last year to rehab. His contract precluded them keeping Reyes too. Because of the Madoff thing, the Mets became like a small market team. Big contracts going bad kill small market teams. Yeah it might be tough to see Greinke walk if he's great this year (not a sure thing by any means), but it's not going to cripple you long term. The money you save, if wisely spent, elsewhere can make up for it and you continue to get extra high draft picks to stock your system. Save that money. Put it into the farm system. Pay everyday performers. Just don't overpay for starting pitching. They got Greinke because they had the prospects to get him. Get more prospects. Develop your own pitching, then deal from strength for guys if need be.
  12. He's owed $26.5 million over the next 2 seasons. I suppose if the extension is 8 years, $175 million, they can say it's a $200 million deal in total. That's still a home team discount. Fielder and Boras never really negotiated with the Brewers. The Brewers could have offered Fielder $200 million two years ago and Boras would have turned them down as his thinking is that if the Brewers could offer that, someone else could offer more. These are totally different scenarios. Keep in mind to that Votto's had some issues not unlike Greinke, and he was comfortable in Cincy so they were in a much better situation.
  13. My guess is Ishikawa gets dealt (or sold) rather than sent down. I suppose they can release Almonte and free up his AB's for Sean Halton, but I would want Halton playing 1B at Nashville. Morris is ticketed to play 1B at Huntsville and I don't think they'd have Halton repeat anyway.
  14. Based on what? Conrad is in his 30's and his major league record is very, very thin. Conrad's limited big league record reminds me of Joe Dillon. Everybody got excited about him after he hit .342 in 82 AB's in 2007, then he proved why he was a career minor leaguer the next season when he hit .213 Also, did I miss something, Conrad hasn't even officially made the team has he? Ishikawa is still in the mix last I read isn't he and he might be more useful than Conrad, as late inning defensive replacement for Gamel. That scenario might mean Gamel could be pressed into service at 3B, but that would only be in an emergency as Green could be up in less than 24 hours if need be.
  15. Having grown up in Fondy also, long, long before young geezy, I'll have to start tracking Pierce. Last Fondy player in Brewer system was Kevin Grater in the late 90's. I remember his dad playing baseball in high school. That's how far back I go.
  16. It surprising in that Rivera had been very loyal to the organization and vice versa. Mike's getting up there but so is Phllips. Maybe Melvin has a non playing job (coach or scout) within the organization for Mike. I would hope that's the case.
  17. No it does matter that there is no place for Green. Green did outproduce Gamel offensively last season. You can look at it that Green may not project to hit enough to play 1B in the majors, but that's irrelevant. If Gamel fails you have the option of moving a poor defensive 3B near the end of his career in Ramirez over to 1B and putting Green at 3B. But offensively it's the same. That's the only scenario for Green to ever win a regular job with the Brewers. The fact is Green's numbers last year: (.336/.413/.513) are pretty darn impressive. AAA numbers don't always translate but I'd rather have that guy on my bench than the non-descript group they have.
  18. I'm afraid Green's future in the Brewer organization rests almost entirely on Gamel's fortunes. Once they signed Ramirez, it pretty much relegated Green to more AAA action even though he has nothing to gain being there. That Green actually had a better year than Gamel last season matters less than the fact that Green has options and Gamel doesn't. I didn't like the Ramirez signing when it happened and I still don't. A huge part of that is the money and the age of Ramirez, but part of that is that Green deserved a shot. I know they are thinking they can't afford to have to rely on rookies at both corner infield spots, but these are guys in the mid twenties with plenty of AAA experience. Besides they could have kept McGehee as a fall back. To summarize, they've decided to go with a bench of an untested Aoki, the erratic offensively challenged Gomez, a light hitting defensive SS in Izturis, and either a contact challenged career minor leaguer in Conrad, or a power challenged 2nd middle infielder in Maysonet who's also a career minor leaguer. The Cubs with Reed Johnson, Jeff Baker, Alfredo Amezega, and Blake Dewitt, have a considerably better bench than what the Brewers have.
  19. I would think Maysonet would take the spot Izturis is contending for. The other spot is between Conrad and Green with the loser taking the 3B job at Nashville that is now open with Wheeler gone.
  20. Keep in mind that sports journalism has evolved just like mainstream journalism into an echo chamber. In the mainstream news media, certain catchphrases get repeated over and over. It doesn't matter which outlet you watch (exception is Fox of course) but they all sound the same. None of the guys at ESPN has an original thought. The same is true at MLB network which is full of ex ESPN guys.
  21. I really think Maysonet is a decent option. I know Ueck has said nice things about him in the past. He's still hanging around at big league camp too and that tells me they are at least considering him. He does a lot of the little stuff too. He had 15 sacrifice bunts for Nashville last year and he's got some gap power.
  22. How about Edwin Maysonet as the backup at SS instead of Izturis? Maysonet has had a decent spring. He's hit pretty well in the minors (.290 last year). He's adequate in the field. Plus he's right handed. Green has clearly outplayed Conrad this spring and deserves the other backup spot in my opinion too. Yeah, you'd like Taylor Green getting AB's every day, but lets face it, he's blocked in the Brewer system and with Ramirez and Weeks both locked up, he won't be unblocked anytime soon so why not get something out of him at the big league level. Find a way to get him in the lineup a couple times a week resting Ramirez, Weeks or Gamel.
  23. Bruce doesn't belong in that discussion. He's more Corey Hart than he is Ryan Braun. He gets rated on what people think he can do, not what he's actually done. When did Latos become the 2nd coming? A 3.47 ERA last year in the AL West? He'll be solid but expect more like 3.80 in GAB. I'm on record as saying the Brewers will dearly miss Fielder and that's not meant as a knock on Gamel either. He just affected the lineup so much. Ramirez doesn't have near that affect. Braun has never been in a lineup with no Prince and that's going to affect him. Gonzalez is only an upgrade in the minds of Betancourt haters. He won't be. I think the division is up for grabs. But my worry is that if the mainstays of the Cardinal lineup stay healthy, they are the team to beat. Yeah Albert is gone, but Holiday, Berkman, and Beltran have all produced in their careers without Albert as a teammate. You can't say the same about Weeks, Braun and Hart who've all played almost entirely with Prince as a rock in there.
