  1. Think what you guys will. But living in Chicago area, I often got to hear the commentary by the Cubs own telecast team of Brenley and Kasper and while they marveled at his ability to hit the first pitch, they also questioned the value of that approach in that the Cubs rarely ran up the opposing team starter's pitch counts. Then there was he's early season power outage. Ramirez had 1 HR and 17 RBI in the first 46 games, while the Cubs were burying themselves in the standings. If he starts out like that with Braun out for 50, the Brewers are in deep trouble.
  2. Logan Schafer may not have high rankings by so-called experts that rate prospects, but within the Brewer organization, I believe he is very highly regarded. 2010 was a lost season for him but he rebounded with a very impressive 2011. It's not like he's a come out of nowhere guy. He was a 3rd round pick. If the Brewers deem he's ready then he probably is.
  3. FanGraphs has ranked the Brewer signing of Ramirez as the 7th worst transaction in the offseason. To quote FanGraphs: "he's a lousy defender who is headed for his age 34 season ...was basically replacement level in 2010...and blocked off Taylor Green...who could have provided some value at 3B and allowed the Brewers to spend their money upgrading at shortstop or first base". They went on to say he's probably worth the money in 2012 but that "they have locked themselves into declining performance at the position..." Amen to all of that. I couldn't agree more.
  4. You know what I meant. In MLB: -Aoki: 0 PA -Schafer: 5 PA -Gamel: 370 PA They aren't kids but to expect them to produce like anything other than rookies, when only Gamel could truly be referred to as a one time top prospect, is unrealistic. A lot of rookies perform better than veterans. It is 6 of one, half a dozen of another whether you play rookies or washed up veterans hanging on. My point is because they are older and in Aoki's case has played before major league size crowds in Japan, they shouldn't be in awe of being in the big leagues and they should be able to perform to their talent level.
  5. Aoki is 30. Gamel will be 27 in July. Schafer turns 26 in September. It's not like these guys are kids. You know what I meant. 7. I agree that Morgan and Aoki are reduntant especially considering how close Schafer is to the big leagues (and I think he's closer than we realize). An end of spring training deal would not shock me in the least. By then, they'll have a better look at Aoki, know more on Schafer, and probably have a need that's not apparent now crop up that requires immediate action.
  8. Right, because having 2 hitters who can hit 20+ home runs and having a very good rotation makes for a lost season. Every team has 2 hitters who can hit 20+ home runs. Most have 3 or 4 and so do the Brewers who have had many mediocre teams with that many. I'm still a wait and see on the "very good rotation" too. Again, a lot of teams have very good rotations on paper, but every season is different. Rotations can come apart quickly. If you want to hang your hat on anything the Brewers have that other teams can't match it's 8th and 9th inning relief.
  9. Don't confuse the inability to put the ball in play with patience.
  10. Drew Stubbs fanned 205 times last year, a ridiculous number for a guy with average power numbers and posted a very mediocre .329 OBP in the leadoff spot. He also hit just .226 off RHP. I would think they'd have some interest in Morgan and a 2nd tier pitching prospect like a Heckathorn or a Scarpetta. Remember if they don't have room for Bailey, they have to move him and that lowers their asking price. Phillips is a FA after this year too, so they might want to bolster 2B.
  11. The Brewers are lacking in RH power hitting corner OF/1B types in their system. Unless you like 26 year old Brock Kjeldgaard who's never been higher than AA over LaPorta who's only a year older and much more advanced, I think he's got some value especially considering he still has an option and the Brewers are trying a rookie at 1B.
  12. Not to change the topic back to Casey, but my gut tells me that we haven't seen the last of Casey McGehee in a Brewer uniform. At some point he's going to be one of those guys who's available on the market every year, perhaps as a non-tender next year, and I think there are many fans that would embrace a return in a bench role for Casey.
  13. If he's exonerated Braun's attorneys are going to have to decide whether the breach of confidentiality has caused financial harm to their client. If so, there could well be lawsuits filed if they can determine the source of the leak. Perhaps the delay involves behind the scenes negotiations to insure that MLB is held harmless for the leak.
  14. The Indians just signed Casey Kotchman to play 1B. LaPorta has never fulfilled the promise he had when the Brewers sent him to Cleveland for Sabathia. He's now 27 and clearly past the prospect stage. The problem is he's never hit lefties very well so his suitability as a platoon is questionable. But he can play either corner OF spot as well as 1B, and he still has an option left. Maybe a return to his original organization could revive him?
  15. So are non roster invitees, Juan Perez and Dan Meadows both of whom have decent long shot chances at roster spots. Parra has never excelled vs. lefthanded hitters so he's not really a viable loogy. I'd rather have Carlos Lee than Derrek Lee.
  16. Against LHP, Morgan sits and Gomez plays.
  17. "I'd rather see a younger career minor leaguer get chance as the last guy on the bench of a major league team." I'd rather see a guy 26-28 year old pulled out of an indy league for AAA depth than a failed one time top prospect.
  18. Taylor Green is listed at #2 on the depth chart at 1B. If Green is hitting .325 at AAA, while Gamel is languishing, I don't think they will wait long to make a switch. Aoki still isn't showing up in the depth chart, but I find in interesting that they had Green listed 3rd in LF having never played an inning in the OF in the minors. It would appear that had they not signed Aoki, they were ready to stick Green out there for 50 games. That would have made things interesting when Braun got back if Green were outhitting Gamel.
  19. To me his ceiling is Adam LaRoche. Whether he's that player this year is to be determined. Even in LaRoche's best seasons though, he's been very streaky. I would expect Gamel to be streaky too but if he can match a typical LaRoche year of .270/.340/.480 that would be fine.
  20. I would generally agree with you except the Rays have done pretty well competing against both the Yankees and Red Sox and to a lesser extent the Blue Jays. Those three teams are better than any team outside of Detroit in the AL Central. It helped the Rays that the Red Sox and Yankees were knocking each other off. The Tigers have virtually no competition in the AL Central and figure to win over 100 without much trouble playing all those games against the Twins, White Sox, Indians and yes the Royals. To top that off, the Rays had a much better manager than the Royals do.
  21. Vinnie Chulk's numbers at Sacramento last year were pretty impressive considering the venue. I like this signing at least as much as McClung's. I'd be surprised if he doesn't get an invite at some point.
  22. Opposing hitters normally do not slug .412 (like they did off Grienke) off one of the best pitchers in baseball in a normal year and last year pitching dominated.
  23. I don't think Yost has ever finished in the top 4 in any Manager of the Year vote. Maybe 2007 and that's it. Manager of the year candidates usually come from teams that do unexpectedly well. He's had plenty of teams that not much was expected from and they didn't disappoint. I don't think Lindy's factored in Prince's signing. Royals could finish 3rd in AL Central and still be 25 games back. Progess? Hope? Not really. This is baseball. The Royals have done a real nice job recently in building a nice productive farm system with tons of young talent. Under normal circumstances that would pay off with a contender either this year or the next. But because an 80 something year old mutli-billionaire who can afford to lose money (and at his age doesn't care) breaks the bank to sign a player thanks to no salary cap, all the work the Royals have done is rendered meaningless.
  24. Are Cubs fans unhappy with A-Ram going to Milwaukee? That's something I honestly hadn't thought about before. The Cubs are clearly in rebuild mode right now, so I think it's understandable for a player who's a bit older leave for a chance to win before it's too late. Of course, fans aren't always logical about these sorts of things. Prince's situation was a bit different in that the Brewers were just two wins away from the World Series, and should be in contention again this season. Are you kidding? Cub fans are happy Ramirez is gone. He didn't live up to his contract. Even last year when he put up numbers, he did so only long after the Cubs were out of it. He was awful in April and May. Brewer fans counting on seeing the Ramirez of 06 through 08 are going to be terribly disappointed.
