  1. Not only did he have a stress fracture, but it's now come out that he tore his ACL shortly after the British Open while jogging. He decided not to have surgery then and incredibly went on to win 5 of his next 6 events including the PGA and the Fed Ex Cup, then won his first 3 starts this year. The April surgery was just to clear up cartilage damage that developed after the torn ACL and apparently was designed just so he could play the Open. Just when you think this guy can't really add any more to his legend, he does it. Sort of puts into perspective Gallardo pitching an inning with a torn ACL.
  2. I think the focus should still be on the division where the Brewers have more control over their own fate. Certainly the WC race figures in, but it takes until August to really see who the true contenders are in that race. The Mets are the team I'd be concerned with. They are capable of going off at any time. The Braves losing Schmoltz was a crucial blow. I just don't see that team going on a roll. I actually still think a team like the Reds could get back into it to. If Harang starts pitching like he can, that would give them a terrific top of the rotation. Arroyo's had some good games in the past month too and he's a streaky type pitcher. They also haven't hit like they are capable of. If they do that, look out.
  3. He's also overweight, and has 200 more innings of wear and tear on his arm than Sheets, whose injury history is mostly non-arm related. I believe that offsets the 2 years difference in age. That being said, Sheets has earned that fragile label. Sabathia has the better career numbers but this year, Sheets has the decided edge.
  4. Washburn has registered back to back quality starts and 3 of his last 4. I think he'd be an upgrade over Bush, and I think Seattle would let him go for very little in return.

  7. We're seeing reality returning in 35 year old Mike Cameron playing like 35 year old guys did 30 years ago. He still has skills, but he's no longer at or near his peak and not a premier player. As the steroid era (hopefully) gets further and further in the past, we won't have guys peaking in their late 30's like Bonds did.
  8. Just because Choate is "on rehab assignment" doesn't mean he won't stay in the minors. After 30 days, he will most likely stay at Nashville unless a need develops and he proves more effective than Statter.
  9. I think most of the credit goes to McClung. They gave up another 95 mph guy (Grant Balfour) to get McClung. Balfour is now a key member of the Rays bullpen. So it wasn't exactly like they got him for nothing. I don't think Maddux or Yost have done anything special. Sometimes guys kick around a while before they find the right situation. Look at McClung's old teammate at Tampa Bay, Doug Waechter. He kept failing as starter, had injury issues, and now has resurrected his career with Marlins. Then there's Todd Wellemeyer at St. Louis. Pitching is at a premium and guys who can throw will constantly get chances. Many don't pan out. Some eventually do. All that being said, he's been in the rotation for a month. So far so good, but he's still basically a 5-6 inning pitcher.
  10. Based on what? His experience? He has roughly 1,900 professional AB's. Weeks has roughly 2,100. Braun has around 1,500. His age? Jose Reyes was barely 20 when he first came up. That he's never played above AA? Well neither did Hanley Ramirez, whose AA numbers at age 21 were pedestrian compared to Escobar's.
  11. Al, can we end this nonsense that Rivera is not a competent MLB catcher? Amazing how you break down stats to two but what is wrong with Rivera (at virtual ml minimum salary) .293/.392? As a Brewer Rivera's hitting: .278/.322/.471, with 9 HR and 34 RBI in 191 AB's. Sure he doesn't have a great arm, but he's not 07 Estrada either. Pitchers like throwing to him too. Sheets comment from the other day "Mikey and I had a great rhythm going" and Parra glowing how Rivera helped him the night he had the perfect game. Is Schneider better overall? Sure. but you don't pay backup catchers $4.9 million.
  12. Schneider makes starter money: $4.9 million in 08, and again in 09. Once Kendall starts 110 games (which should be around the 120th game the way it's going), his option for 2009 is automatically picked up. By the way, one reason Kendall wants to start every game is that he's got escalator clauses in his contract and needs 130 starts to max out his deal. Schneider to Brewers makes zero sense. Just another example of how bad reporters are. All the info is out there if they want to look but most are just lazy.
  13. I'll have to disagree. He's having a nice year defensively, but hasn't done much with the stick for some time now. McCann, Molina (Bengie), Martin, and Soto all deserve it more. Any maybe Doumit, though he hasn't played as much due to injury. Was Braun in at the last "count update?" He and Sheets definitely deserve it. No one else stands out to me as a lock, but Hart is having a very nice season once again. Both Molinas are having better years than Kendall. Definitely McCann, Martin and Soto are too. Doumit's numbers are so good that despite the limited AB's, he could make it. Hart has a lot of guys to pass. Ludwick is a lock. One of Nady, McClouth or Bay is a lock too. Burrell can't be ignored either. Plenty of others figure in too. Unless Braun gets in on votes, they won't take two Brewers as OF subs. Braun should make it but he's no lock either. Sheets just needs to stay in one piece.
  14. IluvDaBush has a point. Hart clearly is the guy who's going to have to move to CF to make room for LaPorta. He may not really want to make that move or the Brewers may want to see him out there before committing multiple years to him. If I had to guess, ultimately I think one of those two ends up at 1B. Really though it comes down to Hart figuring he could make more in year to year arby, and FA and he's willing to take that risk.
  15. 117 is roughly what you'd expect out of your ace. Nice effort by Ben.
  16. The guy's been at least 2-3 years younger than average for every league he's ever played in and he's never really been completely overmatched. Though I've only seen him in a game or two on tv in spring, I wouldn't think he'd be overmatched against big league pitching either. What he does results wise good or bad over a 2 week stretch isn't going to determine a whole lot, but my guess is he'd do ok.
  17. The hill is a neat feature. I'm old enough to remember Crosley Field in Cincinnatti. They had an incline in the OF which served as a substitute for the warning track. Of course that had a purpose of preventing the OF from crashing into the wall, whereas the hill in Houston is mainly a gimmick.
  18. The stadium is a farce really and frankly I feel sorry for Astro fans Phenom Smith. You're not watching quality baseball in that park. Houston natives Clemens and Pettitte aside, what FA pitcher would want to pitch there? How do you even evaluate players? Abercrombie hits a fly ball off Villanueva that wouldn't get near most warning tracks and it's a double there. Biggio no doubt extended his career by playing there and having the ability to hit 330 foot flyball HRs. Conversely Morgan Ensberg got so messed up and pull conscious playing in Houston that he's worthless now. One thing I do like about the park. You have well-heeled and well dressed patrons sitting behind home plate and not all off in boxes somewhere. I get annoyed watching behind home at Miller Park and seeing overweight guys or gals in tee shirts waving to their friends at home. I know Milwaukee is working class and all and that's great, but you'd think the people forking over the bucks for those seats would want to project a better image.
  19. Melvin didn't sound so sure today. He's going to be examined tomorrow and a DL stint is possible. "They aren't in desperate need of an infielder"? Say what? If Hardy and Weeks are both on the DL at the same time?? Hall is still platooning with Branyan at 3B remember. Now you could replace Hall in that platoon with Dillon, play Counsell at SS and Hall at 2B but that leaves Iribarren as the only backup middle infielder on days where Dillon or Hall is at 3B and Iribarren has played 90% of the time this year in the OF. No, you bring up Escobar. What's this nonsense that he's just now showing he can hit? He hit .325 at Brevard last year. He hit .281 in the Pioneer League when he was 17. He hit .300 as a 19 year old in the Arizona Fall League a couple years ago. He hit well this spring in major league camp. His body is starting to mature, and he's a little more patient, but he could always hit. Besides, he's on the roster. Now you don't play him everyday, but you do start him 3 or 4 times a week.
  20. I couldn't agree more. Look for this team to go anywhere they need Bill Hall hitting at least close to his ceiling which is a lot higher than Counsell's. He's not going to do that sitting on the bench. Counsell's done nothing offensively to justify playing over Hall. It's one thing to play a hot Branyan over Hall. It's another to play a .220 hitter with no power whatsoever over Hall.
  21. As to Braun getting drilled, you may recall the final game of the home series vs. the Astros (Brewer 10-1 win), Braun hit a monster HR. I was watching on MLB Extra Innings which now offers both sets of broadcasts and I was switching back and forth. On the Brewer telecast, BA noted that Braun put his head down and ran and did not show up the Astros. But the Astro telecast had a completely different take. Braun did take off right away, but he turned and yelled something toward the Brewer dougout. The Astro telecast team made a huge deal about it, that it was bush etc. As soon as Braun got drilled I knew it had to do with that. I don't buy that they would have walked Braun in front of Fielder. The Brewer broadcast team suspected something but didn't know what. It also accounts for the booing Braun got when he homered the next time up which they also could not figure out. I have no problem with McClung retaliating. You cannot let teams have free shots on your players and expose them to injury without sending the message back. The problem was that Fielder fanned, and Berkman homered. If it was the other way around, which manager would have looked bad?
  22. It's my understanding that they were looking at Gagne and Troy Percival. The backed off Percival because he wanted a 2 year deal which he eventually got from Tampa Bay for less guaranteed ($8 million) than they signed Gagne for one year. Percival was a risk too because of age and history, but he was very effective in 2007.
  23. I agree with Davego. Don't understand batting the two lefties back to back. Hall has terrific lifetime numbers vs. Oswalt. I won't go so far as to say it's "his last best shot" though. Remember it's Russell Branyan who he's platooning with, not Eddie Mathews, and Branyan is going to hit the skids sooner or later.
  24. If fear of alienating players is holding you back from improving the team, you're in the wrong job. Prince is a grown man. So is Weeks. They understand how it works, especially Fielder who's been around it all his life.
