  1. Gamel's defense is improving under Don Money. He bats left handed, a sorely lacking commodity on this team. I see no need to go after LaRoche who couldn't earn a wide open job in LA.
  2. "I'm starting to believe that Melvin would rather go down with Yost than just fire him." I'm starting to believe Attanasio doesn't have the stones to fire either one of them. There are 3 NL managers with longer tenures than Yost. Two of them are sure fire Hall of Fame managers, Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa. The third is Clint Hurdle. Hurdle, similar to Yost, amazingly kept his job for 5 years of losing before one incredible hot streak got them into the World Series. Now they are back to losing. One would think Hurdle earned himself a little longer rope than Yost. The entire rest of the NL is on it's second or third manager since Yost was hired.
  3. There's one huge problem in trading Prince. Other than Gamel, there are no lefthanded bats to replace him. That's why the only deal proposed that makes any sense to me is the Seattle deal that includes Clement. To me a big part of the offensive woes of this year's team is that it's just plain too righthanded. They should be looking to add lefthanded bats, not subtract the only one they have. That's not to say I wouldn't explore the idea of deal, but any deal that doesn't bring back a lefthanded bat, is going to have to be followed up by one that does.
  4. Anybody notice how Sam Narron can rake? 1 for 2 tonight with an RBI makes him 7 for 14 with a HR and 5 RBI between Nashville and Huntsville. Maybe he should be brought up to DH in AL parks.
  5. Top prospects? No, I'd want proven major leaguers as part of any deal involving Fielder and I think you are short changing Blanton and Street. Street is a proven quality closer who's not yet 25. Not a whole lot of those guys around. Blanton may eat innings (is that bad?) but at 27, he's got a career 4.06 ERA in the AL. I'd say he's a quality major league starter and for a team short of them like the Brewers, he's a big upgrade. Maybe you could expand the deal a little to add something else, but those two names aren't bad starting points.
  6. The problem isn't just at the leadoff spot. The Brewers have the lowest batting average in the first two spots in the major leagues. Cameron hits basically the same wherever he bats in his career. But I think at age 35, he is better suited to the 5th or 6th spots to be a run producer. He'll get some walks, but his .340 career OBP is well below that of Kendall's .374, and it's hard to advance a runner striking out as much as he does. I had high hopes that Hart would start off this year like he finished last year, driving the ball and being a slugger (he slugged .542 in August and .641 in September). Instead he's become this spray hitting guy content with singles and hitting the other way instead of driving the ball. If he's going to continue to hit like that, he might as well lead off. With Hart and Kendall at the top of the order, they at least have two of the highest average and on-base guys ahead of Braun.
  7. Personally, I'm expecting to scarf up some tickets well below face later this summer on the secondary market from the flood of band wagon jumpers.
  8. "How does Yost have any credibility...?" He really hasn't since about August of last year (remember the words with Graffanino and Estrada) and that is a huge part of the problem.
  9. Overall D-. It was embarrasing the way they played. Sure they hit some HR, but they had just 3 hits all weekend with RISP. The defense was comical if you were a Red Sox fan. Pitching was bad, but defensive lapses two games in a row right after the offense scored to give them leads is just inexcusable. The worst part about it is that the east coast media, re ESPN, pays close attention to Red Sox games and they had to come away with zero respect for the Brewers.
  10. At home he's been pretty good, 2-1, 3.56 ERA in 5 starts. On the road, he's had it real rough, but a couple of those games were in bandboxes in Houston and Boston against power laden lineups. It doesn't help when certain guys can't catch perfect throws from short to start innings.
  11. .500 at June 1st means that all is good? By that time Cubs could easily be 15 games over .500. It might mean they are one of 9 or 10 teams alive in WC, but where does that put them mathematically? Still not very good. This team needs a prolonged period of playing well to have a playoff chance and 12 games isn't long enough unless they win 11 of the 12. Otherwise, they need a 50 game stretch where they go 32-18 or something similar.
  12. I'd move Hart to leadoff, Kendall to number 2, Cameron to 5th, Weeks to 6th, Hardy to 9th.
  13. Someone on Haudricourt's blog now saying a friend working at airport reported seeing Yost coming off flight from Pittsburgh.
  14. I cannot confirm nor deny this report other than to say the negotiations are currently in a very sensitive stage. I will say that Vic Feuerherd was a classmate of mine at St. Norbert and I look forward to renewing his acquaintance.
  15. Might is the key word. Nunez had a .535 OPS at Nashville, and basically played himself out of that standby role. Should Hardy go down, they have plenty of options. Escobar would be my bet and he'd play every day with Counsell on the bench, or they could bring up a 3B, and move Hall over. If Counsell goes down, Crabbe is now the "utility man in waiting". Should Weeks go down, they'd insert Counsell and use Crabbe as utility guy or vice versa.
  16. It's feels to me that it's going to happen. Just a feeling on my part. Though this is long overdue (he should have been fired after last year), the actual occurence always comes as a shock to the system. Who knows about Simmons? He wasn't running the team. Personally among ex-Brewers, I think Don Money has better credentials. He's managed a long time successfully and he knows most of the players on this team well. He's also not as closely linked with Yost. Let's hope Maddux and Skaalen are gone too.
  17. Patrick Ryan has now not allowed a run in 20 1/3 innings covering 14 appearences. He must have some awful good sink with a 3.73 GO/AO ratio.
  18. Internally, I'd be okay with Ed Sedar, Kremblas or Don Money. I think the players respect those guys. I say Sedar because Mike Cameron, who is a veteran of a dozen major league seasons with 3 gold gloves, is actually using Sedar's OF alignment card. That says a lot to me that a veteran who knows the league would defer to a coach.
  19. Hooray for Ryan Braun. Having the most talented player on the team call out the attitude that is prevailing is terrific. Of course he said nothing that any of us that watched this series didn't see. But we've had the benefit of seeing this same issue in virtually every Brewer team in a quarter of a century, save one or two years. Not only did Ryan Braun commit to the team and to us fans, he is taking ownership of the clubhouse and in the long run, that is very meaningful.
  20. This team needs new leadership. This series is one huge embarrassment. Fielder is supposed to be a leader, and he's smirking after dropping a perfect throw to first base.
  21. If anyone noticed, Fielder changed mitts sometime after that dropped throw. I noticed earlier in the season that his mitt looked ragged and like something taken out of somebody's attic.
  22. This contract looks really good now. Five years from now with the way salaries escalate, it should look even better.
  23. Honestly is Crabbe any worse than say, Craig Counsell? SD really didn't give him a shot. 34 ABs?. Counsell has 6 hits in his last 35 ABs, same number as Crabbe had in 34. Crabbe has chance to be utility guy next year at savings of $2.5 million or so.
  24. Jackson has a funky delivery and very average stuff. I always figured he was better suited to relief because once hitters saw him the 2nd or 3rd time around, he was toast. But I'm not big on guys getting promoted with ERA's of 6.98. They did have a choice without affecting the 40 man. They could have recalled Dillard. Yes he's not a lefty but at least he's earned a promotion with decent work this season. Hopefully, Stetter will get it turned around quickly and he'll be back.
  25. You don't like how Kendall has played? Kendall will be 34 years old in June. Catching him in noon starts after night games is ludicrous. Torre doesn't do that with Russell Martin, and he's nearly 10 years younger and a far better hitter. Granted he keeps Martin in the order, but not catching. Kendall will be toast come July. Soto is top rookie of the year candidate, but Piniella rests him more often than Yost rests Kendall.
