  1. I'm cautious about Cameron too. Yes, he's played in some big ballparks, but he's never hit for a high average. Another concern for me is that he's 35 and there was a time (pre PED) that many guys were losing it at 35. He's also not a classic #2 hitter. He might be patient enough, but he's not the type you can do much hit and running with. That being said, he does possess a power bat and somebody on this team needs to start producing extra base hits. Adding him to the mix might just be the ingredient needed. It might add that little extra pressure on the opposing pitcher that causes him to make mistakes if not to Cameron but the guys that follow.
  2. A positive from the big picture perspective is that assuming Bush spends at least a month or two at AAA, it certainly will dampen his numbers as he heads to his 2nd arby year this offseason. Had he hung around all season, been his usual mediocre self but again put up a dozen or so wins, he would likely have seen his arby award in the $4 million plus range. I can also understand the need to have Bush pitch regularly with the constant threat that Sheets will go down. If not for Sheets' past and present issues, it would be nice to have a Bush as a long man in the pen. But they can't afford that luxury.
  3. The only mechanical thing I've noticed is how Hart seems to just be flipping his bat at the ball. He's not pulling anything with any authority. When he has made good contact it's been all to the opposite field. With the other guys, it seems more taking pitches to hit (fastballs right down the middle, hanging breaking balls, etc), and swinging at pitchers' pitches. Hardy especially takes a ton of fastballs right over the heart of the plate and ends up swinging at stuff out of the zone.
  4. They still have 13 pitchers which is one too many. Stetter isn't going anywhere. Shouse, Gagne, Riske, Torres, and Mota aren't going anywhere. Who does that leave? Turnbow or McClung. Dillon will be eligible to be recalled in a few days. Let's hope they don't wait too long to go back to 12 pitchers.
  5. Boys, there is your closer of the future, Mitch Stetter!
  6. Hopefully, he just pounded in the final nail. They have to make a roster move and he's the guy who should go.
  7. Call me old school, but I actually remember a time when managers weren't afraid to use backup catchers to pinch hit. The odds of Kendall getting hurt and needing to be replaced in the last inning or two are astronomical. Besides when you have 14 pitchers and have a pitcher batting 8th you are already breaking the so-called rules. What's one more? Bush was a catcher in college. If for some reason, you run out of catchers, you could stick him back there for an inning or two. Use Mike Rivera.
  8. Frankly I think this babying approach just compounds his problem. Somehow I doubt old timers like Spahn and Burdette would shut it down over a little tightness. Ben, it's time to man up.
  9. I'm not so sure the Brewers don't have the "solid LH contact hitter" already knocking on the door and his nickname is Hurricane. It's still early, but he's raking at AAA, his strikeout rate is way, way down, and he's taking walks too. If he becomes adequate as a CF, I think his stock goes way, way up.
  10. I'm biased because he was my favorite but Johnny Briggs made George Scott. Just compare their walk totals as Brewers.
  11. Sixto Lezcano played RF, not CF. Ben Oglivie played LF not RF. Larry Hisle almost single handidly stopped Guidry's streak at 13 with two HR in Friday night game at County Stadium. His 78 season, .290, 34 HR, 115 RBI has to be on the Brewer roster too.
  12. Another pitching change two batters too late.
  13. "The Cubs have a lineup full of guys who have achieved...." That is a ridiculous statement. Achieved what? Hardy's been an All Star at age 24 when Theriot had never seen the majors. What has Mark DeRosa achieved? Or Soto? Or Fukudome for that matter? Reed Johnson? Felix Pie? Brewers haven't achieved? Braun was rookie of the year and set a rookie record for slugging percentage. Fielder was the youngest to ever hit 50 HR in a season. Cameron's a 3 time gold glover in a key defensive position. Hall's hit 35 HR. Kendall's a lifetime .297 hitter. Hart nearly had a 25/25 season in his first year as an everyday player. Counsell and Kapler have 3 rings between them coming off the bench. You can argue Weeks hasn't reached his potential but his OBP his 26 points higher than Soriano, and he's got more tools than DeRosa has. The Cubs have been feasting on bad teams. Their numbers are inflated.
  14. Mota, when he's right, has the stuff to close, but he's 34 years old and never been a closer. He's fine doing what he's doing though had he been rested, I think he's a better backup than Turnbow. I'd stick with Gagne only because he has the mentality of a closer. He doesn't let a bad outing affect him the next time out. Down the road, who knows? Stetter may be a guy to keep an eye on. He's nasty.
  15. Is that something Lou said, or that you saw written somewhere or are you just drawing your own conclusion? Article in today's Sun-Times. Sorry don't have a link: "Piniella also wants to start right-handers next week against the Milwaukee Brewers who are 5-0 (now 6-0), when facing lefty starters..."
  16. Brewers will see 3 righthanders next week, Dempster, Marquis, and Zambrano. Piniella doesn't want to use his lefthanders against Brewer lineup.
  17. "Fielder is...not very good when down in the count...weak vs. lefthanders throwing 92+" Last night vs. lefty Cole Hamels: Two HR, both on 1-2 counts, first off a 92 MPH fastball.
  18. Man, that guy brings back some great memories of a darker time in the Brewers' minor league system. I actually saw Darula on some tv commercial recently. It showed this basically anonymous guy taking swings in the batting cage, then he goes and pitches the product and the name Bob Darula is shown on the screen. Darula could hit. I hope to get over to Schaumburg this summer to see Chris Saenz pitch. I was at Miller Park the day he shut out the Cardinals on 2 hits for 6 innings as an emergency callup. Little did I know at the time, it could be his only major league appearence. Ironically it was 4 years ago today. If there's ever a guy I want to see make a comeback, it's Chris Saenz. He's still just 26. I'm anxious to see how he's throwing. In another bit of irony, the second baseman for the Cardinals who faced Saenz that day was Bo Hart who is also now a Schaumburg Flyer and another Flyer pitcher Ryan O'Malley pitched 8 shutout innings in his major league debut for the Cubs vs. the Astros in 06, then appeared in just one more game.
  19. Riske had a real bad outing yesterday. But one thing to keep in mind about Riske is that he's a notoriously slow starter. Last year his April ERA was about 7, then he went the entire months of May, June and July giving up a total of 4 runs.
  20. I'm with Dr. Wood on this one. He's outslugging both Braun and Fielder, leads the team in RBI and extra base hits. If we need to be patient with Fielder, Weeks, Braun etc, then we need to be patient with Hall too. One note to keep in mind: In 30% of the Brewers games, they've faced the opponents ace (Harang and Wainwright twice, once each Zambrano and Santana). Just 3 times have they seen a 5th starter (Correia, Fogg, Figueroa). Tonight they face another ace in Hamels. Sooner or later that is going to even out and the bats should reflect that.
  21. Just because the everyday lineup is unbalanced with right handed sticks, doesn't mean they should have a bench unbalanced with lefthanded sticks which would make it tough vs. left handed relievers. Ideally, you have 4 hitters on your bench plus the catcher with 2 right handed and 2 lefthanded, ie: Counsell and Gwynn from the left side, Kapler and Dillon from the right side. Counsell figures to spell any of 3 guys from time to time just as he has. Gwynn figures to spell the 35 year old Cameron once in a while and I'm sure they'll find a way to get Kapler in there too. Finding time for Dillon is tough. I think they'll stick with 13 pitchers at least until Dillon is eligible to be recalled, maybe longer depending on the pitching situation. He's the one bench guy who needs AB's down there to keep him sharp because he doesn't figure to start much at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they send him down 2 or 3 times this season.
  22. cubfan1126, Brewers won games at Wrigley started by your number one and two starters. I think beating Santana (like a drum) offsets getting "handcuffed" by Figueroa who that night had a strike zone about a yard wide.
  23. It would have been a shock if the Cubs weren't off to a hot start. They've played 14 home games already and just 6 on the road, 3 of which came at Pittsburgh. In fact against teams not named Pirates, they are a modest 8-6 and how good are a Mets team that has Brady Clark in the lineup? Now they have 2 in Colorado and then another softy at Washington before the Brewers come to town. This is all going to catch up to them. They are on the road most of June and July. If the Brewers stay close, they should be able to overtake them.
  24. Phillies figure to get into Milwaukee very late. Let's hope Rockies can take them about 15 innings tonight.
  25. Gross' numbers were good in 06, but not much since then. The only way he had roster spot was if they kept Gwynn at AAA. For them to do that Gross had to be clearly the better player now and he wasn't. That's not to say he's not a good guy to have or that he didn't contribute or couldn't produce like he did in 06, but more the reality of life as a backup. You get shuffled around. The fact that he's lefthanded really only comes into play if you decide he's going to play at least semi-regularly and considering who he is behind, that's not likely. They have lefthanded PHs to cover that role in Gwynn and Counsell and as we learned a nice emergency option in Iribarren. They did well to get an arm with some upside.
