Durham (Devil Rays) 6, Indianapolis 3, 13 innings Indyindians.com Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Durham Bulls broke through with three runs in the top of the 13th inning Saturday night to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 6-3 in extra frames for the second consecutive night. Facing Tribe reliever Rob Marquez with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the 13th, Durham outfielder George Lombard hit an RBI groundout to Indians first baseman Jim Rushford scoring Jason Smith with the go-ahead run. Rushford fielded Lombard's one-hopper and quickly tagged first base for the force out, but then tossed wildly to catcher Cody McKay as Smith slid safely into home. The throw skipped past McKay allowing Ryan Jackson to also score on the play. Two batters later Pete LaForest singled home Matt Diaz with the third run of the inning to give the Bulls a 6-3 lead. Lee Gardner pitched a perfect inning in the bottom of the 13th, retiring the heart of the Indians order to pick up his 22nd save of the season for the Bulls. Rushford, Mark Smith, and Pete Zoccolillo, the Tribe's 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup, combined to go 1-for-18 in the game, including 0-for-6 in extra frames. The Indians (49-63) trailed 3-0 before coming through with a two-out rally against Durham starting pitcher Carlos Reyes in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wilton Veras scored the first Indians run on a double by Doug Jennings down the right field line. Jennings scored one batter later on a single by Steve Scarborough. After a walk to Rich Paz, Jason Conti knotted the game at 3-3 with a single through the middle against reliever Todd Williams to score Scarborough. Ben Ford, who made his first start since being moved to the bullpen on June 21st, pitched 6.2 innings allowing eight hits and three runs. Ford held the Bulls (59-51) to one run through the first six innings, but was unable to get out of the seventh, allowing a two-out, two-run single to Brooks Badeaux that gave the Bulls a 3-0 advantage. The Indians will look to capture a split of the four-game series on Sunday evening when lefty Luis Martinez (2-0, 0.00) carries a 12.1 inning scoreless streak to Victory Field against Durham's Jim Parque (4-3, 4.20). Richmond (Braves) 7, Indianapolis 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Thanks to a five-run third inning, the visiting Richmond Braves (36-49) defeated the Indianapolis Indians (38-43) 7-4 at Victory Field Monday night. Despite the loss, the Indians finished the month of June with a 19-10 record. Starting pitcher David Manning (4-4) pitched 3.1 innings for the Tribe allowing nine hits and seven runs, including all five scored by Richmond in the top of the third. Following a brief 16-minute rain delay, both Manning and Richmond starter Andy Pratt struggled with their control in the early portion of the game. In the top of the first inning Manning walked three batters while giving up a two-run double to Adam LaRoche. Tribe right fielder Mark Smith threw out LaRoche at the plate as part of a double play to end the inning. Indianapolis answered right back in the bottom of the first thanks in part to three walks issued by Pratt (5-5), including a bases loaded pass to Keith Luuloa that allowed Bill Hall to score from third. The Tribe took a 3-2 lead when Wilton Veras singled to right field with two outs to drive home both Steve Scarborough and Smith. The Tribe advantage was short-lived, however, as Richmond sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the third scoring five runs on four hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. Wilson Betemit and Nick Green each drove in two runs in the inning for Richmond, both coming on singles to center field. Pratt, the International League leader in strikeouts, settled down after his early game wildness, pitching 6.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs while striking out six to raise his season total to 106. Veras and Scarborough were the only two Indians to register multiple hits in the contest. Scarborough, with a 2-for-4 evening, extended his hitting streak to a personal season-high nine games. Veras finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. The two teams will conclude the four-game series on Tuesday evening when Joe Roa (2-1, 4.58) looks for his third win in as many starts for Indianapolis facing Chris Fussell (4-8, 4.80) and Richmond. The Indians will travel to Columbus for a short two-game series on Wednesday and Thursday before returning to Victory Field on Friday evening to begin an eight-game homestand on July 4th at 5:30 p.m. vs. the Louisville Bats. Huntsville 15, Birmingham (White Sox) 3 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Corey Hart the pictured player; get ready to digest a lot of offensive details here; Ben Hendrickson -- yes!; read who's getting the spot start tonight... www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=185 David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: STARS RETURN THE FAVORI don't know who had the bigger night --- the Stars or myself....... A night after giving up a season-high 18 hits to the Bashers of Birmingham, the Stars gave them some of their own medicine, while adding a few more runs than the Barons could the night before, demolishing the Barons on a season-high 19 hits for a 15-3 victory....... The Barons were the victims on July 31, 2001, when the Stars last put together that many hits in a game. I don't know if I really saw that game or not. Sure, I was there in body, but the rest of me was in Dreamland........ How many times since I was 10 years old have I dreamt of throwing out the first pitch in a game. How many times have I imagined how the ball would leave my grip, propelling it like one of my old Met idols on the mound, and seeing it cross the plate? If I had a nickel...... Allow me to indulge myself here........ I was sitting in my seat reading the paper before the game when Shawn "Bull" Bulman, the Stars' broad-shouldered Director of Marketing, asked me what I was doing in the next ten minutes. "Well, I'm going to get to the next page," I said. "How would you like to throw out the first ball tonight?"........ I was stunned, but after realizing this was not one of Bull's jokes or put-ons, I left with him and another employee down to the Stars dugout, had a little chat with Kade Johnson, and waited nervously, twirling with the baseball that had been handed me, popping it into the catcher's mitt that I borrowed from Johnson......... When the National Anthem was done, I was introduced and accompanied out to the mound where starter Ben Hendrickson was......... I stopped at the edge of the mound, asking Ben the way a naval officer asks to come aboard a ship, "Could I use your mound for a moment?"........ Ben with a wide grin, gestured with his hand as if to say, "It's all yours," and I took my place on the rubber. (In front of it, rather than behind. I was too humbled by the experience to actually pitch from behind.)........ In my fantasies, I always pitched from the stretch, but instead, I stared straight in to Mike Kremblas's crouch, wound up as a pitcher normally does in a game situation, because this is my one and only fantasy come to life, and with a 3/4 delivery --------- Well, at least it wasn't a wild pitch. I threw the ball where Kremblas was able to reach it after it hopped in the dirt. My pitch was on line, but way too low........ I almost forgot to meet him in the middle after I finished. I shook hands with him and thanked him. I kept the ball, of course, and handed Johnson's catcher's mitt back to him, and got him to sign the ball........ Everything I dreamed about since I was 10 was fulfilled, except for the part about delivering a strike....... Hey, gimme a break. I'm not a teenager anymore. A rain delay of 43 minutes in front of a very sparse crowd, scared away by a deluge that began around 4 pm and lasted a long while....... Though the rainfall withered into windblown drips by gametime, the field was nowhere in shape, as the Stars grounds crew battled a very soggy outfield and numerous puddles in the bullpen area and the right field corner...... With a near-depleted bullpen, manager Frank Kremblas needed Hendrickson to go as long as he could and stay within his pitch count of 75, maybe even 80........ Ben obliged beyond anyone's expectation, with his second straight impressive start. Ben threw 75 pitches, 49 for strikes (65.3%). He had innings of 10 or fewer pitches thrown in his last three innings. The Barons thought they'd pick up where they left off on Sunday, when Juan Piniella doubled in the first with one out. A walk to Justin Reed followed, but All-Star Gabe Alvarez hit sharply into a 4-6-3 double play to end the first.......... The Stars instantly took the lead in the bottom half. With one out, Dave Krynzel hit a one-hop single to left and stole his 30th base of the season. Then came J.J. Hardy, who is red hot once again....... Hardy hit a little flair to shallow right-center field. Krynzel was sent in from third, scored easily, and the Stars and Barons were even........J.J. is now 9-for-18 in his last 4 games, raising his average to .307, after a week-long slump in which he went 2-for-26....... The Barons tied the score 1-1 on a two-out single to left by Guillermo Reyes....... Scott Bikowski had led off the 3rd inning with a double to the base of the right field wall, then Josh Shaffer singled him over to third, Shaffer taking second on the throw to hold........ After Reyes drove Bikowski home, Shaffer made a beeline for the plate, but Krynzel's one-hop throw to the plate nailed him to end the inning. The Stars went ahead for good in the 3rd inning, 3-1, after Richard Paz ripped a two-out pitch up the alley, hitting the Domino's sign in left-center field. That scored Noochie Varner, who was off with the pitch........ Carlos Maldonado closed the margin with a solo HR in the 4th, but after that, Hendrickson retired 10 straight hitters....... Meanwhile, the Stars chased out Birmingham starter Mitch Wylie, who threw 72 pitches in just three innings of work. Kris McWhirter (1-2, 1.78) came on in the 4th and the Stars ate him alive --- the first of two 5-run innings the Stars would have this night....... The Stars loaded the bases with none out on singles by Chris Barnwell and Ryan Knox, and a walk to Daryl Clark, who entered the game after Krynzel was removed in the bottom of the third inning after fouling a ball off his leg......... After J.J struck out, Corey Hart had the first of his four hits of the night, finding the grass in shallow right field, scoring Barnwell and Knox. After Ryan Gripp walked to load the bases again, Varner hit a bloop single, sending in Clark. Richard Paz, playing with a black eye and sore shoulder after a collision with 6'5", 235 lb. Darron Ingram, filled the bases again when a McWhirter pitch grazed his uniform........ Mike Kremblas had the first of his four RBIs when he closed the scoring in the 4th with a long fly to left, scoring Gripper......... Kremblas would close the scoring in the 7th inning as well with a 3-run HR off Rob Purvis to make it 13-2, his 3rd HR of the season. It fell just fair, to the right of the foul screen in left field, almost where J.J. Hardy had earlier this season deposited a ball in a little 3 ft. x 2 ft. area between the screen and the wall.but only his first with men on base........ For Mike, it was the only homer he's hit with runners on base this season......... The Stars weren't done when with two out Gripp and Varner drove in the final nails in the 8th inning....... The 15 runs is a season-high and most since August 18, 2000, when they hammered Mobile, 17-4. Mike Adams (3-3, 3.06) will make a spot start, his first professional start after 86 relief appearances, on Tuesday to end a short homestand for the Stars, and end the Barons' marathon 15-day, 13 game road odyssey........ The series will continue with two games at Hoover Met starting on Wednesday......... After seeing Mike pitch 5 1/3 no-hit innings in relief vs. Carolina, June 23, pitching coach Stan Kyles wants to see what he can do....... Kyles says this is the right time to give him work on setting up pitches and location, and give him more situational experience, something he doesn't get enough of in closing situations. Minor league pitchers are not raised to be closers. That's universal philosophy among every major league organization, with rare exception......... That role comes at the major league level....... The home crowd will see Korean Byeong An (2-0, 1.59) start for the Barons. Byeong left Winston-Salem with a record of 8-4 and an ERA of 3.16 when he was promoted to Birmingham on June 18. Daryl Clark has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games and has a .385 batting average in the 2nd half. Not much of a run producer, though. Only 3 RBIs.......... Noochie Varner is 6-for-11 with 8 RBIs in his last three games Danny Haren, who left the Southern League in May leading with a microscopic 0.82 ERA and a 6-0 record, made his major league debut, Monday night for the St. Louis Cardinals. Haren took a 5-1 loss to the Giants, going 6 innings, giving up 4 runs, just 2 earned, on 7 hits and a walk. Former Huntsville Stars Lou Collier (Stars 2000) and John Wasdin (Stars 1994) were named to represent, respectively, the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Nashville Sounds in the Triple-A All-Star Game at AutoZone Park in Memphis on July 26, a beautiful ballpark, I must inject. Wasdin is 7-3 for Nashville, 9th in ERA with a 3.20 ERA. He has also struck out 107 while walking only 21 in 98 IP......... Collier is hitting .307 for Pawtucket. In 2000, after making his Stars debut on July 7, he hit .267 after a .317 August........ I recommend Stars fans take a visit to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's web site and have a look at an objective report on the Stars by their sportswriter, Tom Haudricourt. He came down to visit Huntsville for three days to write about the treasure chest we're keeping for Milwaukee --- J.J. Hardy, Dave Krynzel, Corey Hart, et. al...... We're holding Milwaukee's future and there's tremendous interest in Wisconsin on what's going on down here. A radio station in Madison, Wisconsin is from time to time, occasionally broadcasting our games. Haudricourt has been covering the Brewers for 16 years, and he has never seen so many promising players assembled on one minor league teams like it has in Huntsville this year. Bought my first baseball cap since I was 5 at the ball park today. Does 7 5/8's size and still tight mean I am bucket head? Depends on what hat you got. When i went to a game earlier this year. I was wearing a 7 5/8 hat but 2 hats I liked did not fit in that size (even the 7 3/4 didn't fit). But I looked and found another one I liked and 7 5/8 fit perfect. -

Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 17, High Desert 5 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks showed why they are the top offense in the California League. Leading the Cal League in average and home runs, the JetHawks added to their numbers by hammering the High Desert Mavericks on Wednesday night by a final of 17-5 at Mavericks Stadium. Four different men had at least three hits for the JetHawks. Kyle Nichols had four singles, two RBIs and four runs scored to lead the charge. Jay Garthwaite had four hits and four RBIs with two runs scored, including a three-run blast down the right field line in the second inning off Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-2). Petty was showered in the first two frames, allowing the JetHawks to get out to a 9-2 lead. Lancaster led 3-2 going into the second and came up with six runs, highlighted by Garthwaite?s 12th homer of the year. The Mavs tried to respond, scoring two runs of their own in the second, as Ozzie Chavez knocked in Joel Alvarado with his first of two triples on the night. Chavez would then score on a Johnny Raburn sac fly to make it 9-4. The Mavs got their last run in the fourth, as Chavez again tripled and scored on a Raburn hit off JetHawks starter John Castellanos (1-0). Chavez finished the night with three hits, while Raburn picked up two RBIs to lead the Mavs. The bullpen allowed the JetHawks to add to their lead. Tommy Marx allowed four runs in just one third of an inning. Tony Stavros then came on and gave up four runs in 1.2 innings. Homers by Snyder and Sergio Santos helped add to their huge offensive night. Snyder connected off of Marx for a two-run shot, his tenth of the year. Santos went deep off of Stavros, giving him five of his six total home runs at Mavericks Stadium. The Mavs take a day off on Thursday and come back to Mavericks Stadium on Friday night to take on Inland Empire at 7:05. Chris Saenz (5-6) will get the ball on Friday evening. Huntsville 4, Greenville (Braves) 2 More injury woes for RHP Jeff Robinson... Huntsville Site Game Summary: That's Corey Hart in the photo; he was in the middle of all the scoring... www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=160 David Weiser's Huntsville Report: OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOTThe Stars did something tonight they didn't do the first half -- they won. I mean the opener, of course...... The slate started clean for everyone tonight. Greenville, though they won 8 of their last 10, couldn't carry over their hot start into their new start, but the Stars, 13 games over .500 overall, went back at it without missing a beat. Props go to Ken Ray, who came out in relief of Jeff Robinson, who left after experiencing some shoulder tightness. He hurled four scoreless innings, giving up two hits, his best performance of the season, lowering his ERA to 1.56......... Things got going pretty quickly after Dave Krynzel grounded to second......... Chris Barnwell slashed a double off the base of the left field wall to extend his hitting streak to seven games........ J.J. Hardy pushed Barney to third with a bloop hit....... Corey Hart then raked a liner to Ryan Langerhans in right-center. Langerhans made a fantastic diving catch, stealing an extra-base hit away; but it still allowed Barney to tag and score........ The Stars got some nifty defense in the 3rd. Chris Waters reached on an error by Barnwell. Richard Lewis forced Waters at second, then Brandon Gemoll speared a liner by James Jurries. Gemoll caught Jurries who was leaning the wrong way for an unassisted double play to end the inning........ Ken Ray was off and running on a spectacular night. He allowed only a bloop hit and a bunt single. No walks. No runner advanced past first from the 3rd to the 6th inning. Ray's offensive support tonight came mostly from Noochie Varner, who has hit a torrid .409 with seven multi-hit games since June 3, and raised his average to .295......... In the 4th inning, Varner came up to the plate with Hart, who led off with a double, on third and Gemoll, who hit an infield single, on first........ With the infield in, Varner chopped a ball over the mound. Richard Lewis read the ball well, making a great play fielding the ball and throwing in one motion, but Corey slid in safe........ In the 6th inning, Hart walked on four pitches and Gemoll singled to right-center, pushing Corey to third........ With runners on the corners and nobody out, the call was made to the bullpen to a pitcher who had been in the G'Braves rotation, Ramon Colon, who was making his 2nd relief appearance. Noochie lashed a double to the corner in left field. Hart scored easily and Gemoll was held at third......... Looking for more, Daryl Clark singled up the middle to Ryan Langerhans, but his throw scooted on the hop between the legs of cut-off man James Jurries.. Clark alertly took second base, while Noochie took third on the error......... With runners on second and third, Kade Johnson hit a chopper to short. Noochie at 3rd, broke and then stopped. Kelly Johnson hesitated too long in trying to catch someone off base, and caught no one. Kade was on via a fielder's choice to load the bases........ On the first pitch, Kenny Ray with nobody out hit into a 1-2-3 double play. Krynzel was walked intentionally to load the bases for Barnwell, but Barney grounded to short to end the inning........ The Stars in their second opportunity to get a run with the bases loaded by the 6th, had failed........ Sandy Guerrero however stated, "I'm very happy with how we swung the bats, especially since we didn't do anything on the off-day and had only eight swings in the cage before the game." The G-Braves were able to get on the board in the bottom half of the 7th as Ramon Castro ripped an RBI double to right to bring in Cory Aldridge........ Greenville attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, as rain started falling......... Matt Childers, whose 9th inning appearances have become cardiac checks lately, gave up a leadoff walk on a 3-2 pitch to Jason Fitzgerald. Cory Aldridge then singled. After one out, Kelly Johnson drew a walk on four straight....... With the bases loaded, Bryce Terveen, .455 against the Stars this season with a key RBI last May 20, hit a dribbler to short, slow enough to score a run to make it 4-2........ With runners on 2nd and 3rd, pinch hitter Jean Boscan came up as the rain started to fall. On a 2-and-2 pitch, Childers got Boscan on high gas to end the game........ The save was Childers' 3rd this month. Huntsville sends Luis Martinez (6-4, 2.33) against the G'Braves' talented righty, Adam Wainwright (5-3, 2.88)......... Wainwright has faced the Stars twice this season. Although the Stars won both games, Wainwright has a 2.07 ERA against them this season....... The G'Braves were unkind to Krynzel again. Earlier this season, they snapped his 11-game hit streak. This time, they put an end to a streak that lasted nine games........ Dave has walked six times in his last five games, while striking out just twice........ Of Chris Barnwell's 43 hits, just six have gone for extra bases, but they've come in unusual clumps. Back in early May, he hit two of his home runs in consecutive games. This double tonight was his 2nd in five games........ There's a chance Ben Hendrickson may rejoin the Stars during their homestand against Carolina, which begins Sunday, which will be the first evening start on that day for the Stars. The Stars will host the first round of the Western Division playoffs at Joe Davis Stadium on September 3-4........ Ballots for the Southern League All-Star game to be held in Jacksonville are out. The results of the balloting will be announced at the end of June starting with managers and coaches on the 27th. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 4, High Desert 2 Triple play dooms Mavericks... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? Danny Kolb pitched seven sensational innings of shutout ball on Tuesday night, but the Lancaster JetHawks got a few breaks and a few timely hits in a 4-2 victory over the High Desert Mavericks at Mavericks Stadium. A bases loaded two-run single by Josh Kroeger off Kolb tied the game at 2-2. Kolb was then removed for left-hander Jeff Hundley. The very next hitter, Kyle Nichols, lined a two-run double off of right fielder Johnny Raburn?s glove for a 4-2 lead. The Mavs were unable to rally, dropping to 0-39 when trailing after eight innings, as Carlton Wells collected his fifth save of the year. Jason Belcher walked with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but both Chris Morris and Froilan Villanueva grounded out as Wells worked the scoreless ninth. Villanueva homered earlier to break a scoreless tie. His two-run shot down the left field line off JetHawks starter Lance Cormier gave the Mavs a 2-0 lead in the seventh. For Villanueva, the home run is his third of the year. Cormier (6-5) went eight innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits for the win. He benefited from a triple play turned behind him as the Mavs threatened in the fourth. With the bases loaded and no outs, Morris lined a pitch to the first baseman Bryan Johnson. Johnson carried it to the bag to get the out on Belcher, and then threw to second to get the third out, as Scott Candelaria was too far off the bag. It?s the second triple play the Mavs have hit into in the last 11 days. Kolb (3-5) was outstanding, allowing just three hits in seven scoreless innings. The four runs in the eighth were all charged to Kolb however, as he suffered his second straight loss. The Mavs are now 1-1 in the second half, and 26-46 overall. They face Lancaster again on Wednesday night, as Chad Petty (0-1) takes the hill against John Castellanos (0-0) of the JetHawks. First pitch is 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: Brad Nelson with two doubles -- six hits in the three games he's been back; Brian Foster forced to leave the game after a HBP; Scott Candelaria with his first OF stint since his very first game as a Maverick last season; Ozzie Chavez' offense continues to disappoint - MassBrew... Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 8, High Desert 7 (10 Innings) High Desert Site Game Summary: Lead Off Walks Lead to LossLANCASTER, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks missed out on an opportunity to bring a long road trip to an end on a positive note on Thursday night. The Lancaster JetHawks rallied for a come-from-behind 8-7 victory in 10 innings over the Mavs at the Hangar, to win the final game of the three-game series. The JetHawks scored two in the seventh, two in the eighth, a run in the ninth, and finally one in the tenth as the Mavs bullpen squandered a 7-2 lead. It?s the first loss for the Mavs win leading after eight innings (20-1), and consequently, the first win for Lancaster (1-25) when trailing after eight. Josh Kroeger?s third hit of the night, a high chopper into right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning turned into the game-winning hit, as Bryan Johnson scored after walking to lead off the inning. Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer (1-4) didn?t retire a batter in the fateful tenth. After Backsmeyer walked Johnson to open the frame, Marland Williams tried to move the winning run to second, but actually reached base, beating out a bunt back to the mound. Dan Uggla then bunted and also reached as Backsmeyer mishandled the ball, allowing the bases to be loaded with no outs, setting the stage for Kroeger. Bobby Bystrowski, who had converted all of his 11 save opportunities coming into Thursday?s game, failed to preserve his second stop in as many games in the ninth. Bystrowski walked Kroeger to open the inning and allowed him to score as Jaime Jones knocked him in with a one-out single to left field. Jones moved to second on the throw to the plate and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Joel Alvarado. Bystrowski settled down and managed to get the game into extra innings, by striking out Jay Garthwaite and retiring Chris Snyder on a pop up. After the JetHawks took a 2-0 lead in the first off Mavs starter Brian Mazone, the Mavs scored the next seven runs. Mark Ernster and Chris Morris had RBI singles in the second to sandwich a pair of RBI groundouts by Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez as the Mavs took a 4-2 lead off JetHawks starter Doug Slaten. Mazone, trying to win his first game of the year, made that lead stand up, pitching his final four innings without allowing a run. The Mavs offense would add three in the fourth to go up 7-2. Morris collected another RBI single to knock in Ernster to make it 5-2. Todd West then picked up a clutch two-out hit to drive in Foster and Morris as the Mavs made it 7-2. The JetHawks began their comeback with two in the seventh off Mavs reliever David Nolasco and two in the eighth off Tony Stavros to make it 7-6. Cliff McMachen (2-0), who walked Dan Boyd to open the tenth but managed to do what Bystrowski and Backsmeyer couldn?t do, survived two scoreless innings for the win. Morris led the High Desert offense with three hits and reached base five times with a pair of walks. Jason Belcher chipped in with a pair of hits for the Mavs, who finished with nine hits, their highest total on the nine-game road trip. The Mavs finish the nine-game road trip with a record of 2-7, and are now fourteen games under .500 for the second time this season, at 23-37. The Mavs are just 3-12 in their last 15 games overall. Danny Kolb (2-3) goes to the hill on Friday night as the Mavs return home for the first time in almost two weeks to battle the Lake Elsinore Storm at Mavericks Stadium. Game time on Friday is at 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: Brian Mazone has struggled all year looking for that first win, so the bullpen had better treat him to dinner after this implosion cost him -- MB... As already posted... Huntsville 10, Chattanooga (Reds) 9 Huntsville Site Game Summary: As always, a very detailed account -- thanks! www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=90 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: FROM START TO FINISH...When I make my speech to the Booster Club near the end of the season and present my choice as the top 10 games of the season, this game will definitely be on it. It was from start to finish, one of the best games I've seen this year, regardless who won or lost........ It was also the longest of the year. Five innings of play had taken 2½ hours, the generally accepted norm for a nine-inning game. The first inning alone took 40 minutes to play as Derek Lee and Ryan Mottl combined to throw 72 pitches. It was a see-saw ride from beginning to end. "First innings have always been a hurdle for me," Lee admits.......... True. In his career, Derek, in starting roles, has given up 47 runs in 93 first innings in his career with the Stars, a 4.55 ERA........ Santiago Perez, Andy Beattie, and Dernell Stenson hit successive singles off The General to start the game. When the inning was over, Robert D. Lee had given up six hits to seven batters and thrown 34 pitches. Only a line drive double play turned by Richard Paz to J.J. Hardy kept this inning from turning into a rout, and probably saved the game, or at least was a major factor, because three singles followed Steve Smitherman's fateful liner........ It just wasn't D. Lee's day. Alejandro Diaz's baserunning mistake actually ended the inning, when he was caught off base by J.J., who took a relay throw from D.J. Clark after Creighton Gubanich singled. But the unsinkable Stars came back in the bottom half of the 1st......... Ryan Mottl the Hoople came in with a 0.82 ERA in two starts this season against the Stars, and 15 Ks in 11 IP........ Noochie Varner, who snapped an 0-for-18 start as a Huntsville Star on Tuesday with a pair of hits, may have finally found the track. He led off the Stars' 1st with a pretty well-hit single up the middle. Three hits followed. After Dave Krynzel looped one that fell in right field, Hardy hit a single to shallow right. Varner exhibited his speed on the bases to fans for the first time, going from 2nd to home, beating the throw.......... Brandon Gemoll then doubled to left-center to score Krynzel, but that would be all for awhile for the Stars. Mottl retired 12 of the next 13 to face him. In the meantime, the Lookouts were chewing Derek up pretty good...... In the 3rd inning, Dernell Stenson and Steve Smitherman had back-to-back doubles....... Smitherman stole 3rd base, although Kade Johnson's quick, but low, throw would have got him, but Chris Barnwell let the ball get under his glove for an error and Smitherman scored to give the Lookouts a 5-2 lead........ Dane Sardinha made it 6-2 with a huge leadoff home run to left center, but D.Lee would retire the next three hitters to end the 4th inning........ In the 5th, Derek gave up his only walk, to leadoff hitter Stenson, then Steve Smitherman followed with a single up the middle and Mark Schramek, playing in his first Southern League game, doubled to left, scoring Stenson....... Lee, in his worst start of the year, had given Chattanooga a 7-2 lead over the Stars, the largest deficit the Stars would have to overcome this season. The Stars went to work and finally caught up to Mottl in the 5th....... Six straight batters would reach safely, beginning with pinch-hitter Ryan Knox's single to left. A bloop single to right by Varner was followed by a pair of walks, then Mottl was through........ Left-hander Tim Adkins, who arrived today along with Schramek, was brought in to pitch to the left-hand hitting Gemoll, but Brandon greeted him with a ground single to left......... The scoring came to an odd end with three errors on one play. With Paz on third and Barnwell on second, Knox, batting for the second time in the inning, struck out, but the ball eluded catcher Dane Sardinha, whose low throw to first handcuffed Creighton Gubanich. The ball bounced away and Paz scored easily........ Barney steamed home as well. Seeing him come around, Gubanich wheeled to grab the ball and whipped a throw home, but no one was there to receive it and the ball sailed to the screen. Ryan Miller did a superb job in relief, holding the Lookouts for three important innings, while the Stars enjoyed a 9-7 lead........ Matt Childers, last year's premier closer who set a club record with 10 saves in one month, was called on to pick up his first save since May 15. Chilly hadn't pitched in 8 days, which might account for the nail-biting conclusion to this game........ Santiago Perez led off with a single to left, then stole second. Andy Beattie hit a wicked ground-hugging double down the right field line, scoring Perez. Dernell Stenson then singled to right-center, scoring Beattie. Finally, a single to shallow left by big Steve Smitherman, sent Stenson to second........ Nobody out and runners on first and second with the Stars up by only a run. There was nobody in the pen, and nothing to do but call a huge mound conference. It was going to be Chilly's game to win or lose......... Childers kept his composure, and struck out Schramek on a 1-2 back-door breaking ball......... Alejandro Diaz, hitting .270 in his last 10 games, hit a high fly ball curling deep to right --- not enough to get out, but enough to cast a doubt whether it would fall inside the line or not and whether Noochie would catch up to it........ Noochie caught the ball in foul territory, but Stenson tagged and went easily to third........ With runners on the corners, former Star Creighton Gubanich took the count to 2-2 before finally ending the suspense with a harmless fly ball to Dave Krynzel......... Childers had his 4th save in 5 opportunites and Ken Ray, who struck out three in an inning in relief of Derek Lee, picked up his first win and first decision as a Huntsville Star......... The 12 hits given up by Lee in this game were the most in his career with Huntsville. His previous high was 10. His ERA climbed to 3.51. All of a sudden, Noochie Varner has 5 hits in his last 9 at-bats, his first stolen base, his first double, and his first RBI --- and it was a big one........Varner, a consistently early swinger, for the first time took the count to 3 balls and 1 strike, then hit a double that carried to the wall in left field. That scored pinch-hitter Corey Hart, who led off the 9th with a single to left, and stole base on a 1-0 count to Varner. The run was the insurance the Stars needed in this game....... Varner's three-hit game raised his average to .192 from nothing in three days......... The improvement in Kade Johnson's defense behind the plate has become noticeable....... After failing to throw out the first four runners to try and steal against him, Kade is 4-for-his-last-6........ Also, I think J.J. Hardy is getting stronger. I've seen him really hit the daylights out of the ball in the last few games, though sometimes to no avail....... Like tonight for instance. He popped a ball that carried to left field as high and far as the tower lights, but it was run down by Steve Smitheman in left, about 365 ft. away........ Pitcher Jeff Robinson arrived in Huntsville today, the third pitcher the Stars have received in a little more than two weeks. On the comeback trail, Robinson, in 7 games and 6 starts, had a 2.16 ERA in the toughest park for pitchers in the California League ....... Friday, Mike Jones (5-1, 2.51) will face Dustin Moseley (4-3, 3.49). The Stars are giving out thundersticks to the first 1500 fans in attendance. Huntsville Box Score:With no DH in most remaining games, there's going to be a good OF bat on the bench each night; Ryan Knox's AB's may suffer - MB... Thanks to Highroller720 who pasted links to all four box scores during the overnight while the "staff" enjoyed the Brewer doubleheader and called it a night -- MassBrew... Indianapolis 7, Toledo (Tigers) 1 Indy Site Game Summary: Zocco's really heating up; Keith Luuloa's unexpected power supply is still strong - MB... INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians won for the third straight time on Thursday night at Victory Field, topping the Toledo Mud Hens 7-1 behind the slugging bats of Mark Smith, Keith Luuloa, and Pete Zoccolillo. The trio of Indians batters drove in all seven Indianapolis runs. Mud Hens starting pitcher Tyler Walker (2-4) was perfect through three innings extending his scoreless innings streak to 21, but the Tribe bats awoke in a hurry in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Jason Conti led off the inning with a single and Bill Hall reached on an error, Smith delivered a one-out double down the left field line scoring both Conti and Hall. Zoccolillo then followed Smith by launching a two-run blast to the right field lawn to give the Indians a 4-0 lead. The home run also extended Zoccolillo's season-best hitting streak to 10 games, during which he has 13 RBI. Travis Miller pitched five innings for Indianapolis to improve his record to 2-1 as a starter and 3-1 overall. Miller allowed five hits and only one run, a solo home run by Toledo's A.J. Hinch in the top of the fifth, in his second straight solid outing since being placed into the starting rotation in mid-May. The Indians added to their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off of Walker courtesy of a Luuloa three-run home run to left-centerfield, bringing home Jim Rushford and Zoccolillo ahead of him. Dan Kolb relieved Miller to start the sixth inning and pitched three impressive innings allowing only one hit while striking out four Mud Hens batters. Roberto Giron came on for the ninth inning in a non-save situation to record the final three outs while allowing one hit. The Indians (22-35) and Mud Hens (27-29) will conclude this brief two-game series at Victory Field on Friday night when righthander Ben Ford (0-0, 3.00) makes his first start for the Tribe against Toledo's Chris Mears (1-1, 4.06) at 7 p.m. Also on Friday night, the Blues Brothers Act will roll into Victory Field to entertain the crowd throughout the ballgame. Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2, High Desert 1 Farm teams now 0-8 over the last two days - MB... High Desert Site Game Summary: RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA ? Brian Mazone and Jake Woods battled it out on Monday night in the final game of the five-game set at the Epicenter. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes ended up on top, as they edged the Mavs by a score of 2-1 in a classic pitcher's dual. The Quakes and Mavs will meet for three more games, only the scene will shift to Mavericks Stadium beginning on Tuesday. Jeff Mathis broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, with an RBI double off the wall in right field. He then scored on a single by Nick Gorneault to make it a 2-0 game. It was all the Quakes needed, as the Mavs offense was held to just one run for a second straight game, on only six hits. Quakes starter Jake Woods (3-3) was excellent, making just one mistake to Brian Foster, as his eighth home run of the year put the Mavs on the board in the seventh inning. The bullpen combination of Jon Rouwenhorst and Scott Schneider held the Mavs off the scoreboard in the final two innings, as each inning the Mavs threatened, but couldn't tie the game. In the eighth, Joel Alvarado's leadoff single was stranded. In the ninth, Dan Boyd singled with one out and pinch-hitter Jason Belcher singled with two outs to put the tying run in scoring position. Schneider earned his second save of the year though, as Ozzie Chavez grounded to Tommy Murphy, who carried it to the bag at second to force out Belcher for the final out. Mazone's best pitching performance of the year still couldn't earn him a win, as the lefty is still winless on the year. Mazone (0-4) went a season-best seven innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while striking out six. Neither Mazone or Ken Ray, who worked a scoreless eighth, allowed a walk on the night. The Mavs return home on Tuesday to battle the Quakes for three more games, followed by three more against the Lancaster JetHawks, all at Mavericks Stadium. Tuesday night's starter will be Danny Kolb (2-2) as he looks to make it three straight wins. Going for the Quakes will be Mike Nickoli. Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central).
