  1. Tendonitis is not much more than normal soreness, Bill, hence, as Ben Ford pitched the day before going on the DL, and pitches well. If it gets worse, then the motion tends to change, and then you got trouble.
  2. Why did they use a DH in the Indy game? It was at Indy, an NL affiliate's park.
  3. Adam is probably still learning how to hit with a wood bat. He looked superb in the CWS on TV after being drafted. He has looked good in person both times I've seen him. He's probably a low-ceiling type, but more power to him.
  4. I wonder if anyone else looked at that and thought, "Huh"?
  5. I still get kicked off every once in a while, but I assume it's an EZ Board thing.
  6. Obermueller should be listening to this one, too. Wes is the 4th starter right now. He will be in the rotation regardless.
  7. Liriano has to be the most underrated SP prospect the Crew has. Nothing but raves about him from Yost and staff this spring, has done nicely at each level, and he's still rarely mentioned as even a possible part of the future, even as a reliever. And while it's AAA, and .366/.367 isn't all that impressive, the idea that Scarborough was nothing but a AA wonder seems to have been a bit premature. His ceiling appears to be no higher than a utility player, but I'd sure love to have that possibility.
  8. I've mentioned the lack of K's a few times, but supposedly he was hitting 98 on the gun tonight, so maybe he's just "pitching to contact" more in '04. He has an amazing GB/FB ratio, about 28-5.
  9. Ben H gets a mulligan, from me at least.
  10. 5 innings, 10 K's, 60 pitches for Sheets. They should be using today's game as a teaching clinic for youngsters, entitled, "This Is Pitching", at least thus far.
  11. Add me to the list of Weeks HBP admirers. Unless they call you for leaning into it, it's a huge plus, as Vina and Biggio have done it for over a decade. Ginter tried to lean in last night and missed on a high curve. OBP holds no grudges, a HBP means you're on base and not making outs.
  12. I can't believe they'd bother with Riechart when Caps is coming off the DL next week, at the latest. Anyone who wonders why March is meaningless need not look past Ford and Hernandez. They are solid AAA pitchers who haven't proved they can do much in the bigs. They haven't proved they can't pitch either, in the few innings they've thrown. I do like Ford as a Buddie type, but he's a 11th man at best. He has limited ceiling, to say the least.
  13. It's also an example why someone like MacGruder should be on the team instead of a middle infielder who can't hit. Don't forget, Trent played 2B and they moved Spivey to SS when Hall got hurt that one game. It's even worse to have a 2B/3B who can't hit.
  14. I'm a bit disappointed we shipped off Machado this spring. I doubt if he'll ever make it (his ceiling may well be as a 2nd utility IF), but he was too good to give away for a generic reliever.
  15. They might just be trying to "stretch out" Adams, to be a 2-3 ining man. That said, now's the time to see if he can start, when the results are meaningless.
  16. Greg, those of us watching Craig play SS have been amazed. He has made every play seemingly, including many tough ones, even a couple superb ones. His range may be a bit less than average, but he's much better than I ever thought he'd be. EDIT: Craig's ranks in MLB shortstops: 3rd in fielding % 5th in zone rating 3rd in range factor I'm the first to say 22 games is too small to judge, but he's been better than advertised.
  17. Ned has done a fine job saving his bullpen, at least not overextending any one pitcher. Ford has 18 IP, but he probably won't be here all year, and it's likely Adrian won't either. Give Yost credit for that, he's giving the "extra" innings to his least valuable arms.
  18. I still like Clark, and I defer to Toby's 5/8 thread, as he said it better than I. Brady would be a nice stopgap CF, and is a nice reserve. And he still is.
  19. OK, Overbay is doing better than anyone else could have imagined. While we all heard that he was a "doubles machine" I don't think any of us thought that meant, "he'll lead the world in doubles." If you give Overbay 500 AB's, with half of them in Miller Park, I see him hitting 40-50 doubles.---Ramblings, 11/26/03 LINK, if you care to check it out
  20. Apple-ton was very cold. The crowd looked like it was a Packers game, all in winter coats with hoods. Of course, I was in shorts, my usual May-October attire, but I did have my handy-dandy $5 Menard's seat cushion/blanket that I used from the 4th inning on. Not much to say on Kloosterman, other than he looked like every other young lefty, wild. The speed gun didn't come on until the 4th, but he was throwing harder than the others, so I'd guess 88-90. Sweet Lou looks like he knows what he's doing up there. The top 5 in the order all seemed like they understood the game, quite a dropoff after that. Adam Heether just drilled a 91 mph fastball to the wall in RC, by far the hardest hit ball I saw. Most pitchers were throwing 82-84 mph fastballs after the gun came on. As I've said before, the scoring is just brutal. Errors given on throws off the mark at 1B...even though the runner looks to have beat the throw. In the 7th inning, there were 105 people still there. Actually, there were 95, but I added 10%, as I figured some may have been in the restroom or concession stand. Also, Chris Collins is the catcher for the Rattlers, and is a fan favorite. Perfect catcher build, 5-6 or 5-7 and so stocky you could just call him heavy. Still hope for those guys that aren't 6-3, 180.
  21. Rijo looks to have finally learned how to pitch after 8-9 years. Funny he's not going to AAA, although his stay in AA may be brief. Also, wouldn't you think Paul Stewart would be handed the first AAA spot that opens up, based on former prospect status alone?
  22. Reid Nichols: Who can you spare for Indy? We'll probably cut 'em rather than send 'em back. Frank Kremblas: Rivard.
  23. Greg, I've thought that several times already. I don't think both Sarfate and Khalid will make it, for example, but I bet one of them will. Kloosterman is a nice sleeper, and Ben is a fine young pitcher already at AAA.
  24. I have always liked the Braves' subdued announcers. So much better than the "fake excitement" of so many.
  25. Incredible first game, but if Renteria's ball carries a few more feet, it's 4-0 Cards in the 1st inning. Toby, Ben pitched the day of or the day before the need for a starter occured (when Caps failed his PFP test). Saenz was chosen over Santos or another AAA arm due to his stamina, as Doug so bluntly put it, "We needed someone who could give us innings, not 1 or 2". I assumed Chris would go down and Bowles or Santos would come up, and I wouldn't mind if they did so. Needless to say, Saenz made an impression.
