  1. Well, the plate is 17 inches wide, a small target if the ball is going 95. The game I saw in Apple-ton, he was all over, 86-93 if memory serves, but most of them were 87-88. Consistency may well have been a mechanics issue.
  2. Well Lend, the difference between 90 and 95 is extremely slight, a minor change in mechanics. If one coach saw one thing, he might have simply changed Tim for the better. For lack of a longer explanation, this is why teams always give a lot of chances to the "hard throwers".
  3. I was just gonna say I bet Rickie has never batted 8th in his life before today.
  4. Rickie's walks have left me impressed with his discipline thus far. He didn't have a hit, yet walked twice and scored both times, that shows a lot of maturity for an A-baller, and should be an encouraging sign for us fans. Or, as I like to say, plate discipline rarely slumps.
  5. I feel Pember will be back, either later when healthy, or something. That's why I didn't include him.
  6. Paz, Coco, and Rushford would be the 3 I like to see return.
  7. Unless I missed something, if you don't sign a pick in the 1st round, you'll get a pick AFTER the 1st round, like 31st. And you can't lose a pick in the top half of the 1st round, just the bottom half.
  8. The Weeks/Sheffield comparison may be the most accurate I've heard. Rickie, while his defense is suspect, has a very short stroke and will hit at every level.
  9. 99% sure you're right MB, as the 6 "renewable" years are null and void if your first contract has expired. And yes, Shelley will have 10-15 teams bidding on his services if not signed by the deadline. Guys who throw 92+ are coveted regardless of experience and age.
  10. Greg, a player has to be protected if he has spent 3 FULL seasons in the minors, unless he was really young, then it is 4 full seasons.
  11. I feel the compensation picks are "too much" myself. Losing your first round pick to sign a free agent is a dealbuster to me, unless you're talking about an ARod. I'm sure a few teams feel the same way, at least the small market ones and the rebuilding ones. In effect, that means that in the case of a top free agent, you only have a few teams interested REGARDLESS of team need. To me, this would have been an easy way for the union to at least increase interest in the "top-tier" FA's, who are the main guys the union care about anyway. Increased interest should lead to more money being offered the top guys. The union was too busy worrying about time zone changes and such, I guess.
  12. Official word is "The union doesn't remember what it agreed to, so it will stay the same". While that's a paraphrase, it's what i read.
  13. Clancy, that's with my heart, not my head. Wes' 2003 numbers are unimpressive, He makes good AAA depth, and would be a good long man/spot starter, but he isn't a starter...yet. He's a bulldog, which would seem to fit in with his being a middle man also.
  14. Very difficult for me not to pencil in Wes for a 2004 rotation spot. He has a low K/9 rate, a high WHIP, gives up HR's, and yet, with all that, he had a very high rate of quality starts. He's also just fun to watch, works fast, throws strikes, etc. But, to be perfectly honest, he still has an option (or two, says Brian), it'd be silly not to have him start in Indy next year and let things work themselves out. We gave away Mike Matthews last April for nothing, and I believe he spent the whole year with SD. We can't afford to lose even "stopgap" players for nothing.
  15. That HR may well have landed in the upper deck at Miller Park. It was going up until just before it landed.
  16. Weeks has plenty of arm for SS or 3B, but the "smart money" seems to be he will end up at 2B or LF/RF, as his bat is far more developed than his glove.
  17. Thought I better get this started before game time.
  18. Even in his "off" year, Ginter had plate discipline. The ability to take walks rarely slumps.
  19. Even if he can't pitch at all (at the very least, he can certainly be a mop-up man), Brooks has shown the distinct ability to hit the ball for power. That'll win him a spot on almost any team.
  20. We don't owe anyone anything. We need to make the best decisions based on our future and nothing else. I have no time to concern myself with what the Astros think about it.
  21. Chas Terni sucks That may be a bit harsh, as he's certainly a ton better than me, but as I stated in my report, he's certainly a "non-athlete" playing an athletic position.
  22. I think that's great, Brooks may not be an OBP man, but he can hit with power. He may well be the best offensive option.
  23. I welcome the Cubs' fans and their cash. Also, I understand the easy money season ticket holders can make selling to ticket brokers on weekend Cubs series. I recall last year hearing $30 seats were being sold TO the brokers at $75-100. I can't blame the folks for subsidizing the cost of season tiks by cashing in. If anything, it makes obvious that the Brewers need to charge a premium for these games next year. Am I supposed to pretend to be upset that the crowd was over half Cubs fans? Heck, several times at Wrigley Field, it sounded like the Brewers fans were in the majority, as it was a Brewers rout. And, as Bud Selig pointed out, it sounded like 10-15K of the crowd at Yankees stadium today was BOS fans. SL, Cubs, and Red Sox fans travel to support their teams. I'm happy to have them, as is every team.
  24. The Barons are bringing back the righthander Pacheco who dominated Game One so (two-hitter) on three days' rest on Sunday. Are you kidding me? If the Crew even thinks of doing anything like this, I'll scream for Nichols' resignation on the spot. It's hard to believe short-sightedness like this exists in today's game, with the bonuses and injuries young pitchers come down with all the time.
