  1. That would be awesome if we could get him for only 10k per year, but I think there is a veterans' minimum. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. Maybe. But a thread about how we should just stand pat at SS for now would be kind of boring. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  3. Actually this link will get you straight to all of his videos on mlb.com from last season. http://mlb.mlb.com/search/media.jsp?player_id=457787
  4. I love Espinosa as a player, and if he is indeed available, the Brewers should go after him. Very good glove. Good power. Good speed. Downsides are he strikes out a little much and OBP will probably be lower than desired (.337 in minors last season). He would be a definite upgrade over Betancourt, and cost-controlled for several years. If you have never seen him play, go check out some of his highlights vids on his player page on mlb.com. http://mlb.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?roster_year=2010&player_id=457787&c_id=was
  5. Didn't the Phillies give up Sandberg and Bowa for him? Must be a stud. Is this Ivan DeJesus, Jr.? I would guess so, because that's a pretty cool and uncommon name. I used to love getting his baseball card back in the day. Actually, I believe it is Junior.
  6. I like Ivan DeJesus of the Dodgers. Not sure if he projects more as a SS or a 2B though. Not a great hitter, but I believe he has a good glove. Not sure the Dodgers would be willing to move him either.
  7. I guess it all depends on how much he would cost. It would make for a good competition if we had Narveson, Capuano, and Francis all competing for the final rotation spot in spring training. One of the two losing out on the rotation spot could possibly go to the bullpen if needed. And then on top of that you would still have Rogers and Rivas in AAA if needed. Starting pitching depth is a luxury any GM should pursue if they are worth their salt (and I think that's what Melvin is looking to do).
  8. I think it's a great idea in case Narveson isn't fine or if someone gets hurt (which is likely). Francis has solid upside.
  9. If I were Melvin I would just focus on cheap options with decent upside. You know the old saying about throwing a bunch of "stuff" at the wall and seeing what sticks.
  10. Do you honestly trust a guy coming off a year where he posted a 6.86 ERA at AAA? I'd rather have a veteran like a Will Ohman. I would say we shouldn't "trust" him to contribute, but we can be hopeful that he might rebound. I have the same hope for Mark Difelice coming off his injury. I think with the bullpen you get as many arms as you can get to compete for spots and see how things play out.
  11. I like the thinking, but yes at age 37 his defense would be a huge question mark. I think Podsednik would be cheaper and provide similar production (similar poor defense also), although Pods doesn't have the same playoff experience.
  12. I don't think he can handle left, let alone center. He's always been a pretty terrible outfielder. I forget what a bad fielder Podsednik is... you would think with his speed he should be better, but he's not.
  13. It would be nice to see how Counsell compares to what's out there.
  14. Isn't Cruz tearing up the Mexican Winter League? Not sure how much that means though.
  15. I would think the Brewers picking up Greinke would motivate Counsell to re-sign. I really just don't want an everyday SS that is going to give away runs defensively.
  16. Keppinger is a minus defender at short, albeit not as bad as Betancourt. Though they would both cost us runs defensively.
  17. I would guess they would rag on Counsell if they had him then too (very similar player). Fan opinions aren't generally the best gauge of a player's value when building a roster. I remember many on here saying the Giants couldn't win the World Series because they didn't have enough offense.
  18. Actually I would prefer to bring Counsell back, dump Betancourt, and sign Punto. At this point in Counsell's career, Punto is probably a little better defensively, but he can still give you average to slightly above average defense at short. Punto also hits lefties better and Counsell hits righties better. For some reason though I think Melvin is okay with going with Betancourt. I believe he compared him to Hardy defensively in the aftermath of trade. I think most people would say Betancourt's a far cry from Hardy defensively though.
  19. I guess I don't understand why so many people hate on Punto. He's a very good defensive player, and would give the Brewers at least as much offense as Escobar did. I also like Izturis (although not a FA), but I think Cabrera and Renteria may not have much left in their tanks. And Lopez would probably be just as bad defensively as Betancourt. Cruz will be nice player to have in AAA if the Brewers have an injury. Here's a comparison on the above mentioned SS options: Punto - .615 OPS, 3.8 UZR, 1.4 WAR Izturis - .545 OPS, 5.1 UZR, -0.3 WAR Cabrera - .657 OPS, 3.7 UZR, 1.3 WAR Renteria - .707 OPS, 2.5 UZR, 1.3 WAR Lopez - .656 OPS, -5.2 UZR, no WAR listed at SS Betancourt - .692 OPS, -9.5 UZR, 0.6 WAR
  20. Now that the Brewers have acquired Greinke, who are some FA's that could be reasonably targeted to round out the roster and make a run to win it all this year? Here are a few that I came up with: Nick Punto - Betancourt's defense is somewhat questionable. It would be nice to have a player that you know can give you solid defense at SS (also 2B and 3B if needed). He's not much offensively, but does provide the benefit of being a switch-hitter. Scott Podsednik - Not real high on giving Dickerson much playing time. Could give Podsednik a shot to compete for the starting CF job (or platoon with Gomez), and if he hits as well as he did the last two seasons he would be an option to lead off with Weeks batting in a power position (such as 5th). Scot Shields - Now that the rotation is rounding out, it might be a good idea to pick up another solid reliever. We all know you can never have enough of those. Might be worth a shot to see if Shields has anything left in the tank. He struggled the last two seasons recovering from a knee injury, but was reported to still be throwing in the low 90's with good stuff (has just struggled to regain control). Roenicke would know better than anyone in the Brewers' organization if it was worth bringing him in.
  21. Their OBP's aren't much different. Punto is pretty much the same offensively as Counsell, although he has the advantage of being a switch-hitter. Punto would also give you better defense than Counsell does. I guess I see great value in having a switch-hitter off the bench who can play 2B,3B, and SS at an above-average level. Don't get me wrong, I like Counsell but he's below average offensively and he's only average defensively at this point in his career.
  22. Nick Punto? He's a FA I believe. A switch-hitter and a plus defender at 2B,3B, and SS. I think he would be an upgrade over Counsell. Not sure how much he would cost though.
  23. I'm guess I'm just basing that off the fact that Narveson was a pretty darn good pitcher after the All-Star break last season. Can he do it over an entire season? I don't know, but he at least deserves a shot.
  24. I agree. IF we are going to go for it, we need a top of the rotation starter such as Greinke. IF we are not going to go for it, then I'm of the belief that we shouldn't waste money and/or prospects on mediocrity.
  25. I would think Narveson deserves a shot before Parra does. Also, comparing Pavano and Blanton is a fruitless endeavor. For as much as everyone wants argue about it, they are not that much different performance-wise.
