  1. I'm thoroughly disgusted with how MLB has handled this. I'm all for efforts to clean up the game of baseball, but to base your punishments on hearsay and implications that a player is "lying" because they either don't tell you the answer you want to hear or choose to remain silent is completely ridiculous. Physical evidence of guilt, obtained through the testing procedures that were collectively bargained, is the only way to run this program without it being a farce. Embarrassed to be a baseball fan. I'll add that it has little to do with being a fan of Ryan Braun. None of these players should get railroaded - even if they are Cardinals.
  2. Nobody is asking for "crazy", though. I doubt that anyone would characterize Powell or Provus that way. But they did have some semblance of a personality and vocal inflection rather than doing a Ben Stein impression.
  3. Some good ideas in this thread, I agree with most of them. I don't really believe the ump's statement about 30+ reviewable plays. Sure, there are many calls that have inherent uncertainty (check swings), and fans understand that those are judgment calls that can go either way. Realistically there are probably 5 or less calls that would truly need a replay decision. What ticks me off most is a play like in last night's game, where Gomez clearly got hit by a pitch on the hand, and the home plate ump calls it a foul ball. It's so easy to fix - literally a 10 second call for a "booth ump" to make. A play like that usually doesn't fit under the replay scenarios that people bring up (fair vs. foul, out vs. safe, etc.) but it absolutely needs to be made right if possible.

  5. My dad is what you'd call an "old school" baseball fan, not really into the sabermetrics stuff at all. His biggest pet peeve when watching games is pitchers not throwing strikes/getting ahead in counts. Drives him nuts. And despite what I know about why pitchers choose to be careful sometimes or waste pitches outside the zone, I have to be honest that it's starting to eat at me too. Too many dang 2-0 and 3-0 counts. Aggravating!
  6. I'd like to think that I'm pretty open-minded on the use of some newer PEDs, but lately the sentiment on the pro-juicing side has been as completely wacko as the strict abolitionists on the other side of the argument. Nobody wants to see a guy grow 5 hat sizes during his mid-30s. It was actually physically revolting to watch that transition. There's a fine line between taking a currently banned substance to bounce back from injuries/fatigue of a 162-game schedule, and taking them to turn yourself into Bane. It shouldn't be a free for all, and some of you seem to be advocating that.
  7. Leads the team in rebounding. I'm no fan of his offensive game either, but he is a very good and versatile post defender. Bo places a lot of value on that.
  8. The Rays just signed Cust to a minor-league deal last week. As we know, Tampa has horrible management so it was unsurprising to see them pick up someone who is no longer a viable player. (Sorry Ennder, had to go there. )
  9. When Donovan Hand gets dismissed, I fully expect to see an "Aloha, Mr. Hand!" tweet or post on here.
  10. I don't know why these would be 5950. I thought the BP caps were different from the game caps for a reason. Same reason the BP jerseys are different. They both use that kind of moisture-wicking mesh material.
  11. I'm not a fan of the white front panel in all circumstances, but the Orioles looked very sharp last year IMO. It can be great when used correctly.
  12. You forgot to add in his bous paid in 4 equal instalments spread over 2012 - 2015. I was going off the 2012-2017 payroll obligations spreadsheet posted on the Cot's site. If you're correct, it's his mistake and not mine. https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tz1FL3X6KldYXIoGOHXpv6A&output=html
  13. Roderick - Cot's shows Braun at $9.5 million in 2013 and $11 million in 2014. Outlander - I figured Narveson was a question mark since his health and pitching ability is uncertain at this time. And I tried to include only the players I thought to be "locks" for the roster. I feel like Melvin might give Parra one last shot since he's a lefty and in his last arbitration year. Hoping that we cut ties with Loe, Veras and Morgan for better options.
  14. Let me start by saying that if you read the Deadspin articles when they posted leaked NBA team financial documents, you shouldn't fool yourself into thinking that the owners are "losing" money. I tried to mock up a Brewers 2013 salary estimate by looking at the info on Cot's. Came up with ~$64 million, which is pretty close to what some others have posted. Check my math though. All numbers are in millions, and an asterisk means I'm guessing at the arbitration figure. $480K seems to be the league minimum. Pitchers Gallardo - 8 Estrada - 3* (currently making $486K, Arb 1) Axford - 2* (currently making $525K, Arb 1) Fiers - 0.48 Thornburg - 0.48 Peralta - 0.48 Rogers - 0.48 Henderson - 0.48 Wolf (buyout) - 1.5 Subtotal = $16.9 million Position Players Hart - 10.333 Weeks - 11 Segura - 0.48 Ramirez - 10 Braun - 9.5 Lucroy - 0.85 Aoki - 1.25 Gomez - 3* (currently making $1.9625, Arb 4) Maldonado - 0.48 Gamel - 0.48 Subtotal = $47.373 million Grand Total (18 players) = $64.273 million ____________________________________________ I think this leaves about $25-30 million in the budget to fill the following: 4 pitchers - presumably 1 SP and 3 RP. Need a LH reliever. 2 outfielders 1 utility infielder who can play SS Let me know if you agree/disagree with any of this.
