  1. You can spin the moves by NL Central opponents both ways. Yes they did things. They also needed to because of their rosters. I'm glad the Cubs won the bidding on Lester. I hope they cut bait on Castillo. The Cards traded a pitcher who everyone said was dreamy awesome for one year of a super athletic OF. He won't be awarded bases for a skin tight uni and a studly build though. Cards fans are predicting he signs an extension before ST. I hope so. And their core is old. What are Wainwright, Molina, Peralta and Holiday going to be this season? If the Reds are mostly healthy and BP and Votto are rocking, they could have a good season. Oh, and Cueto who pitched a ton of innings has to stay healthy. They'll probably be sellers at the deadline though. The Pirates lost Volquez and Martin. They brought back a 38 year old pitcher. Saying they are an 88 win team that improved to an X win team ignores their losses and potential declines like Josh Harrison. It isn't realistic to expect the Brewers or any team to punt a season because of a Zips projection or because you don't like some of the players on the team. All the prices will be higher at the trade deadline, so even if you don't like the team it makes sense to play out the 1st half.
  2. Is he a big bat? If you get him in the lineup and he stinks how long do you go before admitting failure? If Melvin sells Mark A on getting him and spends money, then he will be on the roster. Giving up a guy with a decent chance of being a mid-rotation starter for him, uh, aw gosh no.
  3. It seemed like Counsell was in charge of evaluating Aoki. Someone knock on his door and ask. (That's a joke)
  4. Would the Earth have stopped rotating if Halton was the RH partner to Overbay last season? One reason they wanted Reynolds was because a team needs those veterans in the clubhouse after tough losses or losing streaks. Oops. Their formula for player evaluation seems to heavily weight grit, experience and all those cliches that are used to justify old players. I think he's changed a lot, but I wonder if part of the reason for the Halton move is the presence of Rogers or whether Rogers is doomed to the same fate of never being considered. They never talk about the guy as an option for anything.
  5. I could see them trading Castro to get a young pitcher who is at least near MLB ready, but not now as they're trying to assemble a team to compete this season. Russell isn't ready and Baez may be penciled in at 2nd long term or they want to be sure he isn't what he was last season. I wonder too whether Bryant is a 3B long term because if not then Castro or Baez would likely slide over there. Of course they got LaStella. I'd guess he's a BU/platoon/Maddon chess piece type rather than a regular starter. I'd guess that they know the FA SP class next season will be big and have budgeted for a 2nd long term acquisition then. Supposedly they are shopping for a big bat now which won't be easy - Morse, maybe? There's a story on the Cubs site that mentioned Gomes again. I'd love to see him belly flopping around LF.
  6. Jeff Bianchi has a great glove. He probably would have hit better if he didn't get the Roenicke treatment of being iced on the bench for long stretches only to be asked to PH in a late inning. He'd probably be in the running for the bench if his arm still worked. Part of the reason that Gomez was a top 100 and a top Rockies prospect was because his glove was better than decent. The performance that you say define his worth include when he was recovering from a broken leg, his arm was going bad, he was recovering from TJ surgery and battling a variety of back and groin problems. His slash line for last season in the minors was excellent. The FO said his problem has been staying healthy. Could Melvin get someone better for the bench - yeah. It wouldn't be a semi-retired veteran like Omar Infante and would probably cost about 5-8 million or thereabouts. Even then, you're going to be sacrificing defense for offense.
  7. I think like Jerichocantsayhisname said, new FOs are causing a lot of change. I thought Archie Bradley was hot stuff. Maybe Arizona thinks he can't stay healthy? Kemp sure hasn't.
  8. He's got a weak arm, but seriously, there aren't many players who don't have a flaw. He walked a lot more in the minors. If he brings that up a bit, he's the kind of player I think they should extend. Assuming some improvement by Davis, I wonder who would be an upgrade.
  9. Having 2 dominant lefties was a great weapon.
  10. The thing is, if he isn't THE guy, you lose little to nothing. If Melvin signs some declining vet to 2/8 or something like that, he's going to play or at least have a roster spot.
  11. Hector Gomez, former top 100 prospect, good glove at 2B, 3B and SS, coming off a good offensive season, is in running for BU MI, something that you view as a glaring weakness.
  12. They've been shopping Bruce for a while if I'm not mistaken and I think they tried with BP as well. There's always the deadline. What's the "Cuban missile" going to bring back?
  13. I thought he played a pretty good first base.
  14. I forget exactly how Roenicke answered when asked about him. It was something like he's an "effort guy," which seems like damning with faint praise.
  15. I'm probably in a pretty small minority, but I would have been OK with them letting Clark, Rogers, Halton and Morris go at it in ST. No they aren't grizzled veterans or dreamy prospects so they have no sizzle, but there's no way its a "glaring weakness." Rogers and Halton have good splits against LH pitching. I keep reading that improvements cost money. If Rogers turns into a average 1B, they could use him for 3 seasons and flip him eventually. If Rogers and Craig had the exact same at bats, Craig will likely hit better but thats if he stays healthy, unlikely in my opinion, and he costs, much, much more. It seems a lot of people think you can spin the Earth in reverse really fast and go back to 2 or 3 years ago. If only Melvin could do a Jedi mind trick and convince Brewers nation that he got Hector Gomez in the rule V draft.
  16. Wang lost prospect eligibility last season, but he'd be pretty highly regarded is my guess. Getting a LH mid rotation starter for free seems like a pretty deft move. DeShields already had a fair amount of discussion. For one he didn't want to play 2B. Another is evaluators questioned whether he could play an adequate CF. He didn't hit well last season. He has a reputation for a bad attitude. Maybe he's great, but he seems like a BU corner OF who you don't want to use as a defensive replacement or a pinch hitter. Luhnow said he didn't think anyone would take him.
  17. I agree. I'm kind of mulling a theory that fans need some sizzle that trades, FAs and premium prospect graduations produce. Without it, rather than thinking about what may be, you watch other teams doing things, imagine they are getting better and expect your team to be stuck in the mud.
  18. A couple Boston guys were on the radio today and there was definitely some drama with Theo at the end. I know pretty close to nothing about all of it, but I find the guy kind of obnoxious in interviews particularly when he refers to things in management speak. I have to say that city is in an absolute fever.
  19. I don't think he could play the OF either. He lives in Florida. He should have his agent call the Rays.
  20. I'm talking about fans and writers. Superstar closers and expensive middle relievers has been treated as a foolish and quaint notion of days gone by. Even the idea that relievers can be counted on to perform consistently from season to season is considered ignorant. Yet Melvin is somehow derelict for not doing those things.
  21. Sure, he's highly tradeable. I remember a beat reporter for the White Sox talking about how much they liked him. Plenty of teams would gladly pay and play him. The problem is that the GM and owner don't view the next season and the few after that as pretty much hopeless.
  22. That's the old Melvin - spending money when he could just use people on his team or in his system to get roughly the same thing. What are the suggestions? Utility players and expensive relievers seem to dominate. Its strange to hear that spending a lot on the bullpen is once again a thing.
  23. Six million a year is cheap? I think its strange with all the tanking the Astros have done that they can't assemble a bullpen from their system.
  24. He might do it for someone else because rather than having a fat contract, he has none. I'd think he'd be more appealing if he could at least spend some time at DH - maybe Rays?
  25. Their reliability is pretty low, but beat reporter tweets indicate that A's and Giants weren't interested. Someone trade a SS to the Mets and grab this guy cheap enough to make the risk worthwhile. Make him a utility to start the season and let the pieces shake out going forward.
