  1. Smith = high K/9 (will regain this year) Chapman = high K/9 Miller = high K/9 Those guys went for a haul Jeffress OK K/9 Melancon OK K/9 Those guys were throw-ins. It seems like relievers that can miss bats in the playoffs is what people want. Jeffress' value wasn't nothing, but it doesn't fit the rest of it. I know JJ had good team control, but I think this is a good trade.
  2. He's only 22. Might not have been ready the last 2 times. Ditto on his stats being only OK in Vegas. Only 22 so maybe he's plateaued or maybe it's just a bump in the rise up.
  3. It's apparently based on one of the minor leaguers. I would think that the Reds may just ask for a different one...unless he's that important?
  4. I would want Rosario as Stearns seems hell bent on picking up middle infielders, we might as well get a good one. The Mets dont seem to want to give him up though. For me it's 1. Rosario 2. Herrera 3. Smith Scouts must know more than I do, but a short 1B (Smith) that hasn't hit for a ton of power yet is not something I am incredibly excited about. I'm not ecstatic about Herrera, but I think he's not getting credit that he should on here. He'll be a good player.
  5. I have always been an OPS (and more advanced hitting statistics) supporter over things like batting average, but everything that I see tells me that Gallo may be more like a .210 hitter with a .280 OBP. That scares me. Of course, if he does get dealt to Milwaukee, I'll hold out hope it is because they see something with him that they can fix to get him to .260/.340.
  6. He's hitting on the road this year, that's for sure. Maybe he's hit that Cespedes 29-year-old bump in power. However, he's been pretty bad on the road in his career away from the short porches of Great American. Like, he's basically the hitter that Curtis Granderson currently is in Citi Field.
  7. Great move to get a .750 Citi Field hitter that can't play RF well to move their .750 Citi Field hitter who is old and also can't play defense anymore to CF.
  8. No, it's not. I'm not going to get into a Nottingham debate here, but go read some scouting reports. He's far from a "never was" at the position, no matter how many times you say it. Which is a lot. Every day. Multiple times. Sometimes even going for a Gary Carter strawman. If the Brewers trade for a catcher, it is because Stearns likes up the middle guys, just like splitter said. It says nothing about Nottingham. Actually it is why Stearns traded for Nottingham in the first place. I dont buy for a second Stearns was trading for another catcher if he thought he had one and neither do you, IMHO. Catchers are not guys you easily move around and expect success. They are catchers because they are catchers. They have already taken away useful life in their bodies and general use at other positions. I do buy the SS or CF argument as those guys are typically the most athletic in HS and college. Not catcher. There's also something called a trade in baseball. If Nottingham and Mejia were both studs, one of them could be traded for a similar prospect at a position of need or if we are talking 2020 and the team is competing for the playoffs, could be used in a "Sabathia-esque" trade.
  9. Chris Davis actually followed a very similar path as a 3B in the minors with Texas, then eventually moving to 1B after getting moved to Baltimore. Here's the difference: Davis batted .280-.300 in his minors stops. I'm not a batting average guy, but that shows that he at least had some sort of ability to contact the ball. The bigger key is that he only struck out about 23% of the time in the minors. Gallo is hitting .250 in the minors with a 35% strikeout rate. It's quite possible that he hits .190 every year with a 40% K-rate in the majors.
  10. Gattis is useless unless there is a plan to flip him again. Let Maldy finish the season and sign some journeyman "pitching trainer" for 2017 for $1 million.
  11. Jeffress doesn't K 2 batters per inning like Miller and Chapman. That's the difference. Jeffress is a nice 162 game player. These teams, right or wrong, have perceived guys like Miller and Chapman to be massive difference-makers in the playoffs. Jeffress is "just a guy." He's a good one that will be valuable over the course of a season, but there are 30 Jeffresses in the league and another notch of 30 guys that aren't a ton worse. Chapman and Miller belong in a class of maybe 5 relievers. If given the choice of dumping a bunch of prospects for Chapman for 1 year or a "pretty good" reliever like Jeffress at a fairly affordable contract for 3.5 years, most of these title-hungry teams will pay even more for Chapman and try to fill in the void of finding a "solid" reliever next year. Relief pitching is a very year-to-year thing. The issue is that teams aren't willing to pay for the extra control. Most of them don't care enough about the 3 affordable years remaining to give up an extra prospect. They'll pay more for this year or add more to the pot if it's Miller...not Jeffress.
  12. We're hesitant to deal relievers because teams are only ponying up for elite relievers regardless of team control remaining. Our relievers are good and part of the value is their team control, which teams aren't as interested in ponying up for. We are correctly holding and asking for the high price that they should cost, but I'm going to guess that we won't get it.
  13. Its not the end of the world if Luc isnt moved since we saw what Stearns was trying to get for him. It is very much the end of the world (overdramatic comment aside) if he doesnt capitalize on the elite reliever market though. FIFY. Look what Melancon went for (not much). It seems like Chapman, Miller, or a healthy Davis are the ones that will go for a crazy price. It seems that people are only obsessed with the elite relievers and otherwise will pay an expected price.
  14. No thanks to an extension. 31 is the peak of the steep cliff for catchers.
  15. Why would it? Two ways. Time and resources focused on what happens next with Lucroy. Other teams sensing weakness and low balling offers for other Brewers trade candidates. The Brewers have been getting lowballed for the past month anyways. Guerra and JJ have a value given their team control that other teams probably will not meet.
  16. Freddie? Correct. See my edit of the post. Doesn't make much sense for the Braves even if they're already going into a nonsensical attempt to turn themselves back into a winner soon.
  17. Freddie? I feel like the Braves would just keep him if they're looking at "winning soon."
  18. Where is the idea coming from that Rosario has a worse hit tool? I'm seeing .321 AVG/.372 OBP this year at age 20.
  19. To each their own, but it would eventually fill a position of need. Either he switches to 3B or they can easily flip him. Or one of them flops and you're happy that you have the other.
  20. Yes, I'm sure 0 teams would be lining up to offer what we want in 2-3 years if Rosario is an absolute stud in AA/AAA 2 years from now when the contention window is opening. EDIT: Here was an article from a few days ago: http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/al/new-york-yankees/astros-shortstop-surplus-should-serve-as-model-for-yankees/
  21. For those that don't like Rosario due to Villar and Arcia, do you guys think that the Astros are disappointed that they have Alex Bregman right now? He's either an excellent All Star caliber addition to the lineup or he is a trade piece for an All Star caliber pitcher. If our situation turns out that way, I'll take it.
  22. 2 top 100 prospects (Rosario being a prized piece) and a decent SS prospect plus a good buy-low catcher? I'd take it. I know that throwing in Jeffress isn't great, but I'll take it if it makes the Mets put in the extra oompf.
  23. The Brewers should follow the A's lead with Valencia and give Lucroy 0-2 ABs/innings total over the next 3 days. The risk of him playing is not worth it right now. Let him pinch a couple of times until this is resolved.
