  1. Why wait until the offseason. If the Brewers are "going for it", and the price for some of these relievers are too high, why not trade for another ace. I would offer: Weeks, Salome, and a starter of their choice (Bush, McClung, or Soup) Take two if you'd like. Durham would be an everyday for the remainder of the season. We have catching depth in our system, and Lucroy is better defensively, so Salome would be my choice for trade bait.
  2. Harden to Cubs Burnett to Phillies Durham to Brewers Nady to Rays Capps to St. louis
  3. Harden to Cubs Burnett to Phillies Durham to Brewers Nady to Rays Capps to St. louis
  4. There is a reason why suppan was around as long as he was the year that he signed. Similar to lohse this year. It's not that difficult to find guys to have an ERA around 4.5/5 and eat up some innings. (see McClung, Lohse, bush, and a bunch of others). We just paid too much for it. Nobody will take soup with that contract. Too bad the soup nazi didn't tell Melvin, "NO SOUP FOR YOU"
  5. Unfortunately, our lineup and scoring runs pales next to theirs.... by a lot.
  6. Yeah, I just feel something odd will happen to prevent us from the playoffs. Like having the third best record in the NL, but missing the playoffs, while Joe torre and the dodgers go with a 500 record. I remember the 90 + win seasons in the late 70's when we always seemed to fall short. Or when you think you have what it takes, your MVP closer, or ACE gets hurt. Whatever it is, it will probably be rotten luck. That's why I think Melvin needs to go all out and try improve every weakness we have and just go for it this year. Roberts, Harden, Gamel, Feunties, Durham, I don't care, call it overkill, whatever. GO FOR IT!
  7. This makes me wonder how the Brewers can ever hold on to Jack Z.
  8. Let's not stop here. Remember, CC can only go out there and pitch every 5 days. There are still issues with the consistancy of our everyday lineup. Runs scored/Runs against are pretty even, and if it wasn't for our success in 1 run games we might not be all that excited. Rickie is killing us at the top of the lineup. If something can be done for Roberts that would be huge. Maybe Rickie plus a mid level. Although a lot has been mentioned about obtaining another bullpen arm, I would not do anything like last year. We might be OK there.
  9. Unfortunately, Baltimore is hanging around the wild card (6 GB) and I don't know that they will be sellers at this point. However, if Roberts is available before the deadline, and they would accept Rickie plus a mid level, I would jump on it. Anything short of a trade, Weeks will be our 2nd baseman.
  10. The brewers need three pieces of the puzzle to make them world series favorites IMO. Sabbathia, Roberts, and a stud reliever. Obviously not an easy order to fill. If they can do that and only part with 2 of their studs from huntsville (Laporta, Escobar, Salome, and Gamel), I would do it. Although I would prefer to hang on to Gamel and Escobar. Gamel for his LH bat, and Escobar for his position. Both not necessarily strenghts of the organization. This scenario, of course, would include Weeks to go bye-bye, and possibly Bush or McClung. So be it. Go for it Melvin, and don't screw it up.
  11. What happened with Phillips is pretty rare. Weeks IMO is hurting this team right now and shows no sign of ever being what we thought he would be. If the Brewers are considering trading big time prospects for a rental pitcher, then Melvin should of made that trade in a heartbeat. Roberts is not only better, but by a significant margin. With Roberts and Sabathia, we're in the playoffs.
  12. Please No! Do you remember last year's 220. w/no power at all, and slightly above average D. Last 5 years went something like this, Counsels' salaries; MIL 3M, MIL 3M, ARZ 1.7 M, ARZ 1.7 M, MIL 3M. We're the only team in the majors willing to pay this guy that much. What happened to a hometown discount, especially when you're not that good. I don't buy in to locker room presence and all that other intangable crap for role players (unless your Gabe Kapler). Save the money and use Calix Crabbe or someone like that.
  13. Salome seems to be the logical choice of the "big four" in Huntsville. Yes, catchers that can hit are a commodity. However, we do have Lucroy in high A and we just drafted Laurie. Besides, Kendall has done magic with some stiffs on our pitching staff, and that has been his m.o. is his past. The other 3 of the "big four" I woud rather see play for the Brewers because we don't have the depth at those postions; 3B Gamel, OF LaPorta, and SS Escabar. So, if we need to trade a prospect with a high value (considering the demand for catchers), he would be my choice.
  14. Unfortunately, I don't think sheets will be back. He'll get Zambrano money at least and we won't pay it. However, if there is any chance we can get Cain from the Giants he could be a solid two. All his numbers are in line except for W's. Maybe a Hardy, Salome + a mid level would be enough. Trade fielder/jeffreis to NY for Chamberlain. They're probably going to sign sheets anyway. Trade soup to free up some money to sign a better pitcher. (i.e. sabathia). In short, here is my far fetched rotation; Sabathia, Chamberlain, Gallardo, Cain, and Parra
  15. I like most of your thoughts, however, I would tweak it a bit. Money is always going to be an issue with this team to a degree. Now is a time to dump a pitcher like soup while he has a sub 4 ERA. Maybe the Yankees would bite. It doesn't matter the return. But freeing up 10-12 M would allow the signing of sheets if he wants to stay, and both should occur simultaneously. Then they can trade for a sabbathia, which will be costly. (Gamel/laporta + another). Also, I agree Fielder should be traded, but in the off season only. 2009 Rotation; Sheets, Sabathia, Gallardo, Parra, Jeffries Trade; Hardy, Weeks, McClung, Bush, for young, good, inexpensive bullpen arms (i.e. Baltimore) Trade; Fielder/Hall for someone to replace where you thought Gamel or Laporta would play if you needed to trade one of them for Sabathia. Position Players; 2B Roberts, SS Escobar, CF Braun, 1B Overbay type ( LH contact hitter, high OBP), RF Hart, LF Laporta/Free Agent, 3B Gamel or Hall/Branyon platoon, C Kendall Strong starting pitching, more consistant OBP and contact, plus lefty/righty balance. With the depth of hitting in our system, spend the money now on pitching. A little convoluted.....probably. I put too much thought into this.
  16. Don't forget losing fielder creates a bigger void at the left side of the plate. I don't think laporta is an option at first. This offense needs more balance and a better OBP overall. Power is not the problem. If fielder is dealt in the offseason, we will need a lefty to replace him. The future OF (hart, braun, laporta) are all righties. Brad Nelson? Gamel at 3rd? maybe Overbay? Roberts at 2nd? These are some lefty options that would help next year.
  17. I still think an option should be to trade soup now while he has some value. It doesn't matter what we get in return. By doing so, we can free up 10-12 M to sign Sheets/Sabathia. 2009 rotation; Sheets, Sabathia, Gallardo, Parra, McClung/Jeffries.
  18. My dream lineup 2009; 1) Roberts 2B 2) Hart CF/RF 3) Braun CF/RF 4) Fielder 1B 5) LaPorta LF 6) Gamel 3B 7) Salamone C 8) Escabar SS 9) SP Bench; Kapler, Crabbe, Rivera, Brad Nelson, Dillon Rotation; Sheets, Gallardo, Sabathia, Parra, Jeffries Bullpen; Dillard, Riske, Torrez, and whoever you can get from trading Weeks, Bush, Hardy, Suppan, and Hall. Free up money by trading Suppan (although I do like him), Hall, Hardy, Bush, and Weeks. Save additional money by going younger on the bench, position players, and the bullpen. Use the payroll to sign Sheets ( 4yr/70M), Sabathia (?M), and trade for Roberts (8.3M). There's your world series game plan baby!
  19. There was an article in hardball times about a pitcher's drop in velocity in relation to age. If it holds true, Sheets is now entering the age (29) where he loses 1 mph off his fastball each of the next 3 years. Forget about his propensity for injury, signing sheets even for four years would be a huge risk. He is still a two pitch pitcher, and if that fastball comes down to 90-91, how good will he be?
  20. The only time Kapler has struggled this year is when he played 5 or 6 games in a row early in the season. He is not an everday player. However, he is outstanding in his current role. Cameron, on the other hand, is an awful 2 hole hitter and a change should be made there. I would like to see Ned sit Cam more often in addition to moving him down in the lineup. The problem, of course, is who bats 2. Hardy is the best option IMO.
  21. Between Tolbert and Punto Minnesota has no pop at SS. I recall the twins expressing interest in Hall in the past. I know historically hall has an incredible average when he just puts the ball in play. I believe that would be enhanced on turf. I don't have any numbers to back me up other than what I've read in the past. What could we get from Minnesota?
  22. 11-15 and double digit games out of first.
