  1. I believe the solutions lie in pitching prospects within our system. The Brewers are a small to mid market and need to behave like one. I am hoping Melvin doesn't succumb to pressure from the fans, talk shows etc., and mortgage the future for one pitcher this year. We have other issues too. An inconsistant lineup, an overachieving bullpen, and most concerning; a ton of money committed to mediocre or below average talent (Hall, Kendall, Cameron, Riske, Suppan). That's about 35M right there - not money well spent. I would be all for trades involving the 3-H club (Hall, Hardy, and Hart), but what can we expect in return? Not Halladay, Bedard, or Vazquez. I don't know enough about minor league prospects, but what about a Buckholz type. A pitcher that could maybe crack the rotation next year, and that we could control for several more. In addition, I would pay whatever it takes to keep Braun and Fielder together. That way in 2011, or 2012 when our pitching blossums, we can still have some offense to go along with it. All this can happen with a payroll within reason. IMO the offensive production we are getting from anyone other than Braun and Fielder we can replace frugally through our own prospects or the Gabe Kaplers of the world.
  2. I think Macha is putting what he believes is his best everyday lineup, Gamel's development notwithstanding. Personally, I would rather Counsel be a 4 day a week type player to keep him fresh and productive at age 38. This could occur by giving Hardy a day or two off per week due to his ineffectiveness. When Hardy sits against certain righties, it could be Gamel at third, Mcghee at 2nd and Counsel at short. But I agree that if Gamel's not going to play up here, send him down.
  3. I personally am sick about this. Here we are an small market team with four #5 starters on our major league roster just yearning to have some young pitching studs rise through our system quickly so we can have playoff caliber pitching and hitting simultaneously. Before the year started, I penciled Jeffress in as a starter next year. Not that it was ever clear, but the rotation over the next few years looks even more bleak than I originally thought. The Soup and Loop types will prevail and we could miss our best window of opportunity since the early 80's.
  4. His K ratio is the highest on the team, and he's been facing mostly righties. The Brewers have a major dilemma at third because they're not getting any production from that spot. I would give Gamel till the end of interleague then send him down if there is not an upswing in quality at bats. Further, maybe the market will clear up in a few weeks to see who is buyers and who is sellers. Everybody, of course, is mentioning DeRosa, but I would love to see Scott Rolen for the next two years if Gamel isn't ready.
  5. I don't want to see Kendall back next year at age 36 with no offense and diminishing defensive skills. Hopefully, Salome finishes the year strong and is given the chance to start with Rivera backing up and catching maybe one third of the games.
  6. I love the way Bill Hall is playing defensively this year. But he's still a hack at the plate. Small sample size, yes, but his numbers mirror last years and that's not good. It sure would be nice to have another solid LHB in this lineup. Unfortunately, the way Gamel's playing defense, he won't be called up anytime soon.
  7. He does seem to staying on the ball a lot better with less waggle. When he squares up, the ball just flies off his bat. I would like to see him bunt for base hits more often.
  8. I apologize for the slightly irrational rant. However, as a long time Brewer fan I am not pleased with the state of team right now. JoeHova summed it up pretty well when he stated "none of his deals have really panned out that well". I was really excited a few years ago with talent in our system. Melvin had the ammunition to acquire some pitching prospects and didn't get it done. Now, our payroll is nearly maxed out and we lack pitching. What arms do you see coming up from our system this year or next? (I like Dillard) Signing free agent pitching doesn't fit the small market model. The risk is way too high and you end up overpaying for 500 pitchers. Mark A. says 2.8M in attendance is our break even point. What if we are 10 games below 500 at the all star break? Even with 2M tickets sold we may have trouble reaching that number. What options will Melvin have? He won't be able to dump most of the high salaries we have. Soup, Riske, Hall, Cameron, Kendall. Those 5 alone account for more than the entire Marlin roster. I may be getting ahead of myself a tad, but there is some cause for concern.
  9. I can't believe all the Melvin apoligists out there. Melvin has made more bad trades than good ones. And we are left with an overpaid mediocre major league team with no pitching to speak of in our entire system. Inman, Garrison, Thatcher for Linebrink - bad trade (will get worse as time goes on) LaPorta and Brantley for CC. - He struck this deal pre-maturely because so many loser brewer fans would do anything to make the post season. Hope you enjoyed those two games because that's all you're going to see for a while. If Melvin knew what he was doing, he would trade a lot of these position players while their value is high before their big pay day. And build up pitching depth in the system. (see Florida Marlins.) Lee and Cruz for Cordero. That is a joke. What does this organization have left today from that trade? Balfour for McClung - Balfour has put up better numbers and was never given the opportunity here. Doug Davis for Vargas - Nice Eveland for I don't remember - All I know is he that he is better than at least two of our starters, and makes less money. (this years slow start not withstanding) On the plus side, this will be Melvins last year. Too bad Jack Z won't be available.
  10. I listened to an interview with Melvin a few weeks ago and he is in love with Jason Kendall. All the praise he receives for handling the pitching staff. How could it be any worse than it is now. Consequently, how much blame should Kendall take for the poor start of our pitching staff. My guess is he gets too much credit. Soto came in as a rookie and many of the Cubs pitchers pitched better than they ever have. Is it because of Soto? I doubt it. Not only would I pitch hit for him more often, I would play him a lot less until he starts to hit, if that ever happens.
  11. Wishful thinking. I think what will be intriguing as this thing plays out is how they will replace him. No real proved guys on the roster or on the farm. The candidates; Defilice, McClung, Dillard, Green, or is Jeffries a possibility? If not, would they be willing to spend 5M to get Pedro. The Brewers have overspent on this team as a whole, whats another 5M?
  12. Soup's numbers last year were pretty bad. He posted the highest WHIP of his career (1.54), 4.96 is a horrible NL ERA, and he was gosh awful down the stretch. I expect the leash to be long, and I don't expect the numbers to be any better. Before the year started I would of voted for McClung as a viable option. But after watching Seth today, you have to wonder if he worked out at all in the off season. He looked like Pete Ladd out there. I don't remember him being that fat last year.
  13. 10 and 12, including being shutout twice. Once by Lincecom and others on opening day. And the second by Z against the Cubs.
  14. It's hard for something to be proven completely wrong when it hasn't even happened yet. If he ends the year with .235/.320 OB, 20HR, 65RBI, and 150K's, and a slight decline in his defense, is that worth 10M to you?
  15. The huge assumption being made by Cameron backers is that he will continue to do what he's done in the past. If he was younger I would agree. However, Cam is 36. That is an age that has slowed down the likes of many great centerfielders. Fred Lynn, Robin Yount, and even Kenny Lofton was a backup at that point in his career just to name a few. Research aside, 10M is too risky for a 36 y/o center-fielder. If the Brewers can dump his contract and get some prospects, they should do it.
  16. What if this is it for Suppan? What if he starts the season horribly and is getting us behind in every game he pitches? We now have come to expect at least a guy who's ERA is around 5, a 500 pitcher, and someone who can eat up a lot innings. However, last year he was not clutch down the stretch, he did not come up big in the playoffs, and it is possible that he is done. I know I tend to be gloom and doom, but I hope this organization doesn't sacrifice a better chance to win to try and justify a bad contract.
  17. His hitting is horrible and everyone knows that. But he's a leader behind the plate. And Prince is a eater of everything on the plate. (I digress) With Kendall, if his defense drops anywhere near 2007 levels, he shouldn't even start. With all the catching prospects in our system, I can't wait for the day that we have a catcher that can hit in the bigs. Having said that, it seems as though Macha is a guy that will put the team out there that will give him the best chance of winning, and that probably means Kendall will get more bench time. I'm predicting 115 starts this year.
  18. Budget constraints? Going into 09 there are only 12 teams spending more than the Brewers. How much do think they should spend? I give Melvin a D for money not well spent.
  19. I don't think he did anything to improve the everyday lineup. This is an inconsistant offensive team that lacks righty/lefty balance and below average OBP. He jumped the gun with Cameron. A small market like Milw. should not be paying a player of his caliber 10M. You take away a few hot streaks and he was a 200 hitter most of last year. Who wants to see Mike Lamb in the lineup? Bill Hall? Craig Counsel? (not again!) Jason Kendall? This team is full of holes. The bottom line is on paper this team does not look like a 90M team. If we finish at 500 or below Melvin should be fired before he gives away the rest of our young talent.
  20. Obviously, this post is pretty funny.
  21. I'm tired of all the endorsements Sveum is receiving, the latest from Terry Francona. When do you ever hear major league managers bad mouth their assistants. Does Bobby Cox lose credibility for gloating about Nedly before we hired him? Probably not. Even though he was less than successful. Players too are trumpeting Sveum's case to be manager. None of this, however, convinces me he is right for the job. On the big stage in the playoffs Dale made some mistakes. Playing Hall and Weeks against Hamels, and starting Soup in an elimination game, to name a few. That's all I have to go by, so I say find someone else.
  22. I haven't been impressed with sveum that much. I thought in game 5 he ignored the splits against Hamels and went with Hall and Weeks and it hurt them. I don't know where the decision to start soup came from, but the fact that Gallardo was available to pitch yet didn't start, baffles me. IMO, this organization's love for overpaid veterans that don't produce, is going to cost them a lot of wins over the next several years. A little off topic, but they didn't follow the model of successful small market teams, and now there are a ton of question marks and bad contracts. Forget Sveum and get a manager in here with some post season experience.
  23. I don't see why you're so high on Cain. He struck out one out of every four at bats this year in the minors. Based on numbers alone, Brantley is a much better prospect. We'll see who makes a better major leaguer. And please don't bring back Cameron at 9M.
  24. I posted earlier this year that Brantley was part of the deal I'm done with Melvin. Now it's official, I'm done w/ Melvin. Other than the core group of Braun, Hardy, Fielder, and Hart(??), the near future of this offense sucks. We finished 17th in the majors in runs scored. Brantley was what could of been the perfect compliment to the aforementioned players. Why would the lack of power concern anyone if he could have an OBP at .380 or better, with a 2/1 walk to strikeout ratio. This team needs some balance and I believe Brantley was a critical part of that equation. LH bat, speed, contact hitter, great idea of the strikezone, and OBP. That's good enough for me.
