Thank you for that suggestion. For $9, I may give it a try. My wife is an Apple loyalist (hence, the two Apple TVs upstairs). I’m more inclined to go the cheapest route since we’re talking about a Frankenstein basement setup. Any recommendations? Roku? Amazon? Something else?

Thanks, Patrick. More silly questions: 1) The TV in my basement is 20 years old and still works great for playing DVDs. What are the odds I can enable streaming on that TV with an inexpensive devise like a Roku or Amazon Fire stick? It would probably need to have a USB hookup, right? 2) Can I enable streaming on a spare computer monitor by plugging in a Roku or Amazon Fire stick? (probably not, right?)

For the more technologically inclined BF posters: I don’t have cable and have been getting along just fine with network TV and a TiVo (love my TiVo, BTW). We’ve also purchased Apple TVs to enable streaming on our older TV sets. The only streaming service we’ve had regularly is Disney+, but I’d like to add a second one so I can watch new content while exercising in my basement. I’ve been re-watching the same series over and over again on DVD each morning and I’m ready to splurge on a cheap smart TV and second streaming service. Silly Question: If I buy a TV advertised as a smart TV with Roku, do I need any additional equipment to stream (besides a reliable internet connection)? Ghostbusters is good. Not great. I’d classify it as ‘eventually see.’

I’m going to see Ghostbusters tonight - it’s probably the 4th or 5th movie I’ve seen in theaters in the past 10 years. Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t have a streaming platform, so it could be months before I can watch this movie in my own home. You’d think a large studio like that could figure out how to charge me $30 to stream a new release right away, especially in a post-COVID world. I’d pay a premium to avoid the crowds.

RE: Survivor I randomly drew Genie and Sydney in the pool, so I’m out already. I initially was rooting for Danny and Deshawn, but after they made an alliance with Liana and Shan (yes, the pastor is the villain), I soured on them. We’ll see how that plays out. It will be boring if they ride that pact to the end. I wasn’t crazy about Xander at first, but he’s been good at the challenges and has played a fair game. Evvie too. I loved the fake idol move they pulled on Liana last week.

Turbo - are you still watching Survivor? I’ve gotten back into it for the first time in years. Someone organized a pool at work, which has helped keep our team engaged now that most people work remote a majority of the time. I can’t stand Shan. Xander all the way!

In my experience, a company is more likely to let go of middling performers through ‘re-organization.’ At least that typically comes with severance pay. Layoffs, in my mind, are more large scale in nature, whereas a re-org is more strategic and intended to prune underperforming leaders or teams from the company tree. Sometimes good performers can get caught up in a re-org if their boss has underperformed, but good senior managers will find ways to hang on to productive employees.

I appreciate the insight here. My degree is in applied economics and I’ve spent a lot of time on Data Camp the past 2 years learning Python, R, and SQL (upon the recommendation of someone on BF). Those skills will hopefully keep me employable once I hit the back 9 of my career.

Class of 2008 says hi My first job was awful, but I did it for a year. My second job paid $16/hour, but I was grateful for steady work in the right industry. Now college grads are waltzing into opportunities that took me 3.5 years to earn. I’ve been with the same company for the last 10 years, but now am starting to wonder if I’ll have to switch jobs just to keep pace with inflation. I posted last week in a different thread about how our company raised its minimum wage, but cut our 401(k) match to fund the increase. We’ve been promised better merit increases and bonuses to make up for last year, but I won’t know those results until February. Fingers crossed.

I got in on a work pool, so I’m watching Survivor for the first time in years. The game has really changed with its advantages and hidden idols. I’m not sure I even understand how it fully works. Also, all the contestants are awful (at least the ones featured prominently in recent episodes). One gal is a pastor and she’s been the most manipulative player.

Same … it’s been delayed so many times. It was supposed to come out July 10, 2020. I’m also looking forward to Jurassic Park: Dominion next summer.

I don’t know enough about crypto to make meaningful contributions to this thread, but I find it amusing that the government and SEC seem to loathe what they believe to be ‘imaginary internet money,’ but they sure want to tax and regulate it.

Sorry, I meant if it were a streaming original. But I get your point. It’s there. People can watch it, but most don’t. B99 will always be an underrated gem, IMHO. It’s tough for network sitcoms to be consistently funny with rigid 22-minute windows, large episode orders, and network censorship. Plus, they have to appeal to the lowest common denominator or risk early cancellation if they can’t find an audience. Despite all that, B99 put out 150+ episodes of very funny PG material.

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine series finale is on Thursday. If it were on a streaming service, it’d be a hit. Instead, it’s existed in relative obscurity on network TV for 8 years without ever having a regular time slot to call home. It’s sure to live on in syndication.

Moody’s has been forecasting a Q4 pullback in asset prices for a while. That includes both stock and real estate. I think it’s more of a correction than a recession. Their mid-term outlook is still bullish, but I sense some short term uncertainty.

I’ll always remember Ed Asner from Elf (hard to believe that movie has been out for 18 years). He also voiced Carl Fredricksen, the old man, in Disney / Pixar’s Up.

I’ve been with the same company for 10 years and only interviewed outside the company once during that time. The homework assignment caught me by surprise. I actually declined the second interview.

The last season of B99 starts August 12th. That might be it for network sitcoms. The shift to streaming is complete. The Goldbergs is still a good family comedy, but it’s past its prime.
