  1. Bummer, I’m a big fan of the Pairwise system. Weighted standings work much better over 30+ games than they did for the old BCS football selection model. But hey, it’s 2020. Teams have to be prepared to face inequities if they want to play hockey (or any other sport).
  2. Wisconsin is still #17 in the Pairwise rankings, despite being 5-5. Generally, the top 11-13 make the NCAA tourney (depending on which teams win their conference tournaments).
  3. I'm a fan of shorter DCAing, as I believe data has shown that 3-6 months is ideal. I could certainly be wrong about that, but I believe there was a study on it from a couple of years ago. Thanks. The rational side of me knows regularly investing in equity index mutual funds is a proven path to financial independence. The irrational side of me finds it hard to part with cash knowing how hard I’ve worked to accumulate adequate (non-retirement) savings.
  4. I have some spare cash I’d like to invest in equity index mutual funds. I’d hate to put these funds in the market all at once only to see the market go down, so I think dollar cost averaging makes more sense for me. What’s an appropriate timeframe for DCA’ing? 1 year? 2 years? Longer?
  5. Are they playing Big Ten Hockey in a bubble? All 8 NCHC (lame name, I know) teams will be in Omaha until at least December 31.
  6. I started a free 30-day Prime trial last night for the sole purpose of watching Borat 2. I really wasn’t impressed with the other titles.
  7. Anyone else thinking about trying Prime just for Borat 2?
  8. It will be interesting to see if network sitcoms are able to resume normal production schedules. Every week they are delayed will push more holdovers to streaming.
  9. Ted Lasso on Apple TV+ Premise: An American college football coach (Jason Sudeikis) becomes the coach of an English Premier League team 3 episodes in and I’m hooked. I loved the spoofs that aired a few years ago as advertisements for NBC’s Premier League coverage, but thought it would be difficult to convert them to a series. So far, so good.
  10. Thanks for the suggestions.
  11. I’d like to improve my data science and analytics skills using low cost, online training. Can anyone recommend a good platform? I’m aware of Coursera and treehouse.
  12. During the 2009-2010 season, NBC aired The Office, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, and Community on the same night. That was my last ‘appointment TV.’ There have been a few good network sitcoms since then, but rarely are they paired on the same network/night. Plus, DVR has rendered appointment viewing obsolete.
  13. Unfortunately, it was recently cancelled after 2 seasons. I didn’t think it was a good as The Goldbergs, but I appreciated the nostalgia.
  14. If you could only buy one, what stock would you feel better about long term - Walmart or Target? Why?
  15. I was a 1099 employee my first year out of college while working in a commissioned sales role. It was the best job I could get due to the financial crisis and subsequent recession. I wasn’t earning that much money and was paying the full 12.4% on the little money I did earn. Brutal.
  16. Parks and Rec is returning for a 1-episode charity event. Thursday, April 30 on NBC. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/parks-recreation-return-brand-episode-230048906.html
  17. [sarcasm]Perfect time for a road trip![/sarcasm]
  18. I challenge anyone to add up their Social Security contributions from their 20s and 30s and consider what a difference that 6% would have made in terms of paying student loans, buying a first home, paying for child care, or enabling other investment opportunities. Personally, I think we’re making one generation more secure at the expense of another.
  19. I guess Financial Security and Financial Independence have different meanings to me. I’m financially secure in that I’m years away from having to stand in a bread line; however, I’m still financially dependent on my paycheck to pay household expenses and meet my savings goals.
  20. Even as a young guy just starting out, I never wanted to leave my employer match on the table.
  21. I’m a personal finance nut and it took me nearly a decade to establish a $10,000 emergency fund. I was saving for retirement along the way and had a much higher cash balance at times, but life just happens. In the span of 4 years, I got married, bought a home, had a kid, and paid cash for a used car. On top of that, my wife had an $800/month student loan payment for 10 years. Having graduated in the middle of the last recession, it took longer than expected for our careers to gain traction, but I think we finally felt financially secure around age 32. It’s much easier to save now that our expenses have leveled off and we continue to receive modest raises each year. Despite being a big personal responsibility advocate, I’m willing to cut everyone some slack. This is a true black swan event.
  22. Does anyone else want to watch Cats just to see how bad it is?

  24. Should I receive any stimulus money, I plan on spending a portion at a local coin shop. Silver is attractively priced and it would help keep those dollars flowing in the community.
  25. This is a great little corner of the internet. Commiserating with others has helped boost my spirits during a particularly difficult stretch at the office. Thank you.
