  1. I am sick of seeing that written by people. He did not turn a blind eye, he tried to put policy in place, but had no power to do so. Until the media (who truly turned a blind eye) and the players union got on board (as a result of being hammered in the media).I agree, I really hate people saying they hate Selig just because he was commissioner during the steroid era. He put out effort to stop it, but unfortunately it took forever to come through. Apparently people don't realize that without Selig there'd be no Wild Card and Interleague play. We'd still be stuck with 2 division and the Brewers in the AL, the unbalanced schedule wouldn't exist, there'd be no world baseball classic, no replay at all. Also, there have been 20 new stadiums built under his watch.
  2. Perhaps what Monty is referring to is that Gomez is Arbitration eligible now and are they not one year deals? If so, then Schafer, Gindl or someone else would be a cheaper and better option in 2013. However, I still hope Gomez is gone before 2012 because even batting 8th I don't need a .220 hitter. Keep Morgan or Gomez (for defense and PR only), but not both. Again Gomez's value on defense alone is enough justification to keep him. And he's not simply a .220 hitter. Yes that's what he did this year but he's a career .243 hitter with an OBP close to .300. Obviously not great but not terrible for a guy hitting at the bottom of the lineup. Plus, he's a solid platoon candidate since he hit .278 off LHP this year (though career numbers against RHP & LHP are actually almost identical). And he will only be 26 next year whereas Morgan will be 32. Gomez has way more value than Morgan so if I had to choose, I'll take Gomez.Completely agree. I don't understand the people arguing that Gomez has no value just because he had a bad year at the plate. Getting him for his projected value of around $1.8 million in arbitration is a steal. His defense and baserunning alone is worth that price. He has potential at the plate, and wouldn't be much of a liability if he's hitting in the 8 hole. I also like him over Morgan if I had to take one, but I'd prefer to stay with the platoon at least for now. They are perfect platoon partners.
  3. Yeah, there's no way Reyes comes anywhere close to the money Fielder will get. It's just not gonna happen.
  4. Melvin said in his press conference today that he thinks Fiers has a good shot at a rotation spot this year. That's either Narvy's spot or that means he's gonna trade one of his starters.
  5. There's a reason Melvin got the buyout money for Betancourt in the trade. He's going to buy him out. That doesn't necessarily mean he won't sign him for less, but I doubt that happens. He's just being complimentary. He's not gonna come out and say that Betancourt is awful and he'll definitely replace him. Melvin will sign a cheaper, better alternative. Either that or he makes a play for Reyes. No way he pays Yuni $6 million. He could sign a different SS, plus someone else for that money.
  6. Until I hear Hart quoted saying he doesn't wanna play 1B, I still think it's a distinct possibility.
  7. http://www.mlbtraderumors...ard-chipper-coaches.html This is why I started this thread. Apparently some people in their organization think they should trade Heyward. I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that he gets dealt. The Braves have been rumored to have interest in Hart for quite awhile too.
  8. I would have to think that Hart's value is fairly high right now. He's coming off two pretty good seasons in a row. It all depends on where our needs lie if/when we decide to trade him, but I think he could net us some pitching help or possibly a younger buy-low candidate in the OF from a team that wants to win now. I know the Braves have kicked around trading Heyward, so we could offer Hart + others for Heyward.
  9. I would definitely sell high on him. We started discussing this in the 2012 lineup thread. Anyways, I'd be fine with Gomez as our everyday CF as long as he hits 8th. People just got down on him when he hit 2nd, but his defense and base-running would be outstanding to have in the everyday lineup. Especially at the price he will come at. We have Schafer as a potential platoon mate in CF anyway. I think we could get pretty good value for Morgan right now. Not sure what we'd target, but I'm sure teams would be interested.
  10. I'm with you guys on Gomez batting 8th. He would look a lot less bad as an everyday player if he batted 8th. He is what he is at the plate, but his defense would be huge to have in the lineup on a daily basis. I'd be fine with him as our everyday CF if he hit 8th. I agree that him failing in the 2 hole is what made more people become negative towards him. I could see Morgan being shopped because his value is high right now. We do have Schafer, who could potentially get some starts in CF against RHP if he's on the roster. Or at least he'd be there in AAA if Gomez really struggled. I don't see Morgan having as good of year this year as he did last. Although he definitely is an ideal platoon mate in CF. I guess it depends on our other moves. If we get someone like Reyes to permanently hit at the top of the order, then we'll be fine with Gomez in CF. If not, I wouldn't be opposed to keeping Morgan.
  11. Completely disagree on Gomez. He'll be an incredibly cheap platoon mate for Morgan at worst. If not he's a great bench option because of his speed and defense. No way they let him walk. I do completely agree that Gamel won't be in the OF. He'll be at 1B or off the team. He didn't play any OF at Nashville this year. If him being an OF was in the cards, he would've been playing some in AAA last year.
  12. An agreement on what? A contract? Either way I'm not buying it.
  13. I think the Marlins are the darkhorse destination for Prince. Moving into a new stadium, could use his bat and a new face of the franchise. They could then flip Sanchez for help in other areas.
  14. We obviously have developed plenty of players that were on this team. Braun, Fielder, Hart, Weeks, Gallardo. I just don't see the front office going back into the mode of letting multiple players develop in the big leagues right now. I think they probably should, but they won't. It would likely benefit the team a lot more down the road to throw young guys out there this coming season as opposed to waiting, but I don't see it being done that way. Instead, I'm sure we'll see Kotsay or another worthless veteran backup OF getting a roster spot. And we'll probably sign some veteran pitchers instead of giving younger guys shots at relief jobs. We'll probably also keep McGehee and have him take away AB's from Green, and give up on Gamel and go with someone else at 1B.
  15. I'm not arguing that point at all, I agree. I'm just simply stating that I don't see Melvin doing it this way. Coming off the season we just had, I would find it hard to believe that he'll just roll with 2 rookies starting in the IF, a rookie in the rotation, multiple rookies in the pen, etc. I just don't see it happening. I think Green will get his shot, but beyond another arm or two I don't see it happening. I would like to see some young guys get shots over crappy veterans such as Kotsay, but it just doesn't seem like the way they wanna run this organization right now while "going for it." Sad, but true.
  16. The NFL and MLB are two very different sports. I think most teams would rather have experienced players playing on a playoff contending team. That's not to say that some young guys can't step in to fill holes, but we won't fill every hole with a rookie. It's just not gonna happen.
  17. I'm on board with this strategy.
  18. Yeah, Peralta is definitely a better talent. There's no doubt about that. But that doesn't mean he'll succeed right away. It's better to bring him along slowly and give him the chance to succeed. I think he'll start in AAA, gain some confidence and hone in his control, then come up and help the team at some point during the season. Then in 2013 he'll be in the rotation for sure, possibly as high as the #3 starter depending on what happens with Greinke, Marcum, and Wolf.
  19. Exactly the point. He needs to be in AAA to work on command. We can't afford to have a guy in our rotation with command issues. Maybe he gets hot in Spring Training and gets the nod, but I would think he'll be in AAA. Mainly because I doubt we'll trade any of our starters anyway.
  20. Fiers is more likely to be in the rotation next year than Peralta. I agree with this. I think Peralta could use a full year in AAA. He'd obviously be an option as the 6th starter, but I doubt he would be the 5th starter to start the year over Fiers or other candidates. Don't see the organization rushing him.
  21. I wouldn't trade Hart. Not with Fielder gone. I think we need the potential that his bat brings in our lineup. He would look a lot better at 1B though. I'd be fine with him at 1B and Gamel and someone else out in RF.
  22. I think this can go in the general lineup discussion thread in the major league forum.
  23. How bout Aaron Rodgers? He could make it in time. His presser ended at 3:30.
  24. We have this one. We'll rough up Jackson in the 1st inning, TLR will pull him and proceed to use the entire pen, we'll score off the pen and they'll be a waste for Game 7. Then we'll hang in there against Carpenter and rough up their run down pen to win the series.
  25. Haha, totally agree. Was just helping the guy out. Lol.
