  1. Slightly more info: http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/63737127.html Looks pretty sleazy to me. Oh well, on to Los Angeles.
  2. Hey Brewers fans, I just wanted to let you know that I was in Milwaukee over the weekend for my best friend's wedding. He met his wife while in grad school at Madison. I was absolutely astounded by how awesome everyone and everything we did was. I have NEVER felt so welcome anywhere! Mostly we stuck to the marriage circuit: the hotel (Hyatt Place West), the church (Mt. Olive Lutheran), the country club (Silver Spring, I think?), a park for photos (I do not remember the name, it had a bridge with stone towers and steel suspension cables). But we drove around a bit, and had a nice dinner at County Clare Inn and a lunch at a restaurant right across the street from Usinger's. The bride's father offered to go with me to a Brewer's game if I am ever back in Milwaukee when the team is at home, so I'll have to be sure to make the trip!
  3. If so I missed that. "In half" would be pretty arbitrary though.
  4. Two team metros are disadvantaged by this metric. Hardly anyone is a fan of the Yankees and Mets, the White Sox and Cubs, the Athletics and Giants, or the Angels and Dodgers.
  5. Nice to see you guys continuing the success of last season! I hope the loss of Weeks isn't too much of a problem. I'm bummed about that generally, since he's such a promising young playmaker. But there's a whole thread for that - I wanted to start a new one to say hi and congrats thus far.
  6. See you guys in September, although I'm gonna nip over to the Off-Topic forum for bachelor party planning advice.
  7. Did you not see Lidge's pitch in the dirt to Hart just before? Did you not see that he blew a save last week? It was a wild pitch against one of the biggest and closest-set batters in the NL.
  8. I don't know, it's not that surprising. Bush is a local guy, and Phillies fans are mostly very classy individuals. Happy to cheer for people who deserve it, and we have lots of respect for the Brewers.
  9. Good showing by Bush, very glad to see the fans standing and cheering for him.
  10. Hamels is locked in. Looks like a good pitchers battle so far.
  11. One of the fun things about the Phillies is that they tend to make losses interesting, at least.
  12. Textbook Howard there. The key pitch was #2, when he swung at Ball 2.
  13. I'm living in DC now, and I'm optimistic about the Nats. I mean, the Redskins have the largest stadium in the NFL and no trouble selling out. The problem is the product on the field. And they need to grow through the farm system, like the Rays did. It's gonna take a while. However, the ballpark is not fantastic. It's a major disappointment. The upper bowl is too far from the field, and the building has no distinctive character.
  14. Yeah, I imagine that corporations have been cutting perks like luxury boxes left and right.
  15. If you think Pat was going to resign in Philly for anywhere near that little, you're crazy.
  16. Are you kidding? Having been to many games at CBP during the summers, under the sun, feeling the breeze...that's what baseball is all about! When I want to sit inside I go to a hockey game. (And I love hockey.) As for late October, the chill in the air and your breath fogging up is how you know that you've made the postseason! No team should play under a roof unless their environment absolutely demands it, for examples in Milwaukee or Tampa Bay. It has nothing to do with cheapness and everything to do with the love of the game. For the same reason, I have to vote against the idea of neutral sites. Remember how exciting the energy at Miller Park was because the home team was in the playoffs? Every (playoff) fan base deserves to have that experience too!
  17. Philadelphia is a city of 1.4 million people with over another 4 million in the metro. I'n not saying "they" routinely do anything, let along start fires, but any time you get that many people together for a party (be it the night of game 5b, the day of the Parade, or New Years) somebody will do something stupid. But because it's Philadelphia the media goes out of its way to dig up every last incident, and then people like the OP go out of their way to spread it. This is not a story.
  18. The papers quoted a cop as saying the celebration was pretty much what he sees every single year on New Years Eve. This exact thing happens in ANY other city, and nobody bothers to even comment on it. Admit it.
  19. Hey guys, thanks for the kind words from those of you who offered them, both here and in the Jenkins thread. This remains the classiest fan community I have stopped by in my sojourn through the postseason fan bases, so I want to give you props for that. The fact that that is true despite some comments just a few posts above says something about the sad state we all live in.
  20. I missed the entire game tonight (angry about that) so I can't speak to the strike zone. Regarding the blown call, this was something like the 4th HUGE one of the Series. The Rays got one if not two runs on a call like that in Game 3. Atrocious officiating all around.
  21. There's a distinction between not respecting your own players and not giving your players a free pass when they stink. We expect nothing less than 100% effort, and it always baffles me when other teams fans talk about the need to support their team no matter what. It's wrong to not cheer for your team if they just can't get it done, but it's wrong TO cheer for them if they don't WANT to get it done. Between owners that don't want to spend the money to win (Phillies, all the time) and players who are prima donnas (Eric Lindros, J.D. Drew, etc.) we are well acquainted with the sort of player we don't actually want in Philly. I do think that a lot of players who don't deserve a hard time get a hard time just because we're used to giving players a hard time (poor Donovan McNabb!), but there are other players who absolutely deserve a hard time (I'm talking to you, Jimmy "can't be bothered to run out a pop-up" and "Phillies fans are front runners" Rollins!). Came back with the magic editing stick to highlight one statement that is VERY MUCH not true about Philadelphia. This is a blue collar town and we are all about the underdog. But no, we're not going to root for the underdog when the underdog is playing us!!! Anyway, this is a bit of a thread-jacking now, so I'll leave it at that.
  22. Aha, this explains some of the "small market" talk that struck me as odd.
  23. That's a really moving post. Great to see baseball bringing people together. Especially for me - I was raised in a very non-sports house, although I vaguely remember my dad screaming at the TV during the '93 World Series. I hope to be so lucky as to go to baseball games with my grandchildren!
