  1. as always, thanks a lot fellas. Much appreciated.
  2. I'd pay money to see someone with a Sheetslike fastball or better just throw one directly into Bonds' knee or head. like I said, he has. Two or three years ago (the first time I saw Sheets throw at someone, but not the last), he threw a 97 mph heater behind Bonds' butt/lower back. How did I know it was intentional? Because the next three pitches, the catcher was standing with his left arm extended out.
  3. I remember Sheets blatantly throwing at Bonds a few years ago. It happens. I have no problem with it. But pitchers in general have no control over when they'll get ejected for it. if I throw at someone, and get warned. That batter will know I can't throw at him again. So he'll be ready to swat one. Of course, there's the Julian Tavarez approach with Matheny, where you just bean him every single time.
  4. Al, a free agent like Koonce might command $60k or more as a minor league free agent, since he's pretty much proven at 1b/dh, and provides depth. I could see the Crew keeping him around, since we don't have another 1b knocking on the door.
  5. I'd say Nance was more about 5'3" when I was around him.
  6. And the key word is listed. colby, filthy, pogo, etc, you are all correct. I have a relatively small sample size, but the pitchers I've been around that are easily under 6'0 include Huston Street, Lance Cormier (now of Braves), and Curtis Leskanic. Jamie Shields of the DRays might be under 6', as I don't remember him towering over me like Casey Daigle, Doug Slaten, etc. For reference, I'm 5'10 or 5'11" (on a good day, with shoes on). I had Leskanic by a good 2". Huston Street can't be more than 5'10" and 170. Yet I see he's listed at 6' and 190. I remember once seeing Leskanic listed at 6'1, which made me laugh. What's funny is that it's not just pro sports, but college and high school. proportion is likely more important than listed size.
  7. thanks Brad. It's interesting to think about how things will play out next year. Cain or Ford may jump to AA, along with Fermaint. Brantley and Ford/Cain will jump to A+. Salome should jump to A+ to work on defense. Garrison (personal favorite) could either return to A or jump to A+, where it's quite possible he could join Mark Rogers and Josh Wahpepah. What's unique is that we all marveled at the youthfulness of the Power to open the year, and yet they contended without massive reinforcing from Helena. Their youth, along with the advanced ages in Helena could result in the Brewers basically treating A and A+ as equals next year, meaning that players could be just as likely to jump from A or A+ to AA. The W. Va and BC. rotations were fun to follow. Here's hoping that Wahpepah comes back strong next year, and that others step up, as Helena and Arizona seemed a bit weaker than normal in the pitching categories. Also, Jones' numbers are easily similar to his numbers in AA before his injuries. I know it's at a different level, but it's hard to ignore that. Having Parra throw well is exciting. But what about Josh Baker and others?
  8. However, I never thought of him as an option in any capacity at the big-league level next spring, which is a very intriguing thought exactly why I posted it Colby. If we planned on leaving him as a starter, then there's no way he'd be an option next spring. But it's much more common for a talented reliever to jump from AA, especially since the AAA rotation is pretty full already. But as you stated, Nichols constantly talks of his potential in the pen. It always makes me think of Bob Wickman, only with 10 full fingers.
  9. you know, I've always had a man-crush on Tim Dillard based on the reports and stats, but I have to wonder if his sinker/slider combo has him on the radar for a setup role in the pen next year. Having our only double play pitcher in the pen being the inconsistent and high-paid Kolb might mean that the role is open for Dillard next spring training.
  10. My point is that guys put up gaudy numbers in the Pioneer League every year and then flame out in A ball (see Grant Richardson actually, of Rasheed, Sollman, Richardson, Brady, Festa, etc etc, Richardson has faired fairly well. I liked to refer to those guys as the OBP boys, thinking they'd thrive, and it's been anything but success for the Helena '04 boys
  11. wow, hasn't Mercedes gone deep in several straight? that's new for our Dominican prospects
  12. so Krynzel hasn't started either game, and Hendrickson is the 5 man, despite better numbers than all but Eveland and Villanueva. That says a lot.
  13. nice game for the Sounds. Gwynn with yet another homer...amazing how good he's been this year, even to someone who expected this kind of line. Interesting to see Hendrickson scheduled for game 5, with Jackson in game 3. I know Ben has struggled lately, but Jackson's first AAA campaign hasn't been lights out. I would think Huntsville opens with Thurman, Gallardo, Parra, Dillard.
  14. Boston and Toronto obviously have huge payrolls. The A's cannot be accused of that though. But why not call the White Sox or the Yankees disciples of Sabermetrics? They sign the best players, and can mash. Wouldn't Matsui, ARod, Jeter, Sheffield, Giambi, etc qualify the Yankees? What's tricky is that these teams are branded certain ways for their organizational philosophies. Yet we know from our reading that Melvin places a great deal of emphasis on stats. In particular we know he talked to Nix about his declining discipline. Yet the Brewers aren't considered a sabermetric team.
  15. Bouchie might be the most exciting youngster that few have noticed. He hit 7 homers, 45 or so RBI's, draws tons of walks, and he also is a catcher

  17. Parejo has a boatload of talent - I hope he repeats Brevard next year and gets to start full-time. That may be a tall order to fill because of Gillespie, Ford, Cain and Brantley all breathing down his neck, but Freddy deserves to get the call for a year. Great body, decent plate discipline for a guy rushed to high-A ball as a 21 year old. Didn't Parejo start off the year on fire? I seem to recall him jumping onto our radars, then kind of disappearing

  19. He's 17 and a high bonus prospect. There's no way he gets released. Remember, the minor leagues have had one of the most stringent testing systems in American Professional Sports for about 5 years now. He'll learn from it, and maybe it'll prevent others from the same mistakes
  20. I could see Heether jumping to AAA to fill in for Rottino, perhaps Fermaint if Gwynn is called up. But mainly any promotions will depend on who from AAA is called up, and the resulting moves
  21. also Colby, interesting to hear that Parra will always pitch with some stiffness and soreness. So when all of us wonder why guys don't "just get the surgery out of the way", this tells us something. There's a huge reason guys would rather try rehabbing than have arm surgery
  22. I wonder if they can have him assigned to the W. Va squad to serve the suspension in April/May, then have him go to the AZ team in June
  23. Mass, just was curious who won the 1st half title in the SAL, to see if W. Va has any chance

  25. both the Journal Sentinal and milwaukeebrewers.com have been quoting the front office as saying it's likely that Rottino gets called up.
