  1. question....of the seemingly 90% of posters calling the season over on Thursday evening, how many feel it is still over? I say we take this one today, and go for 3/4ths of a sweep! Wrap up the season series with the Cubbies ASAP!
  2. I can't promote moving Obermueller to the pen when Indy's most pressing need is in the rotation. Plus, he was so good there in 2003 for the Crew, that I have to believe he still has a chance at a bright future as a starter
  3. great night for Krynzel with 3 hits (including a double) and a walk.
  4. We're not seeing the end result. Why? No hitting. Why? No sluggers forget the part about sluggers, and you're right. If we have people on second all night (like tonight), and a team of 8 mark Loretta's were to come up to bat, they'd likely score 4 or more runs. As for the comments by Clancy about selling off the parts....WHY? this was one loss. Last I checked we have allowed more runs than we've scored, but we're over .500. As far as I'm concerned, we have a chance to sweep the final three games of the series. Why sell off parts? Do we need more AA/A+ fringe prospects for guys like Ginter, Helms, Spivey, Burba, Vizcaino, Kolb, Davis and Santos? I'm sick and tired of landing AA/A+ fringe guys who will be lucky to ever put up decent numbers in AAA. Let's buckle down and make a run here, cause we've got a Cards team playing over their heads, a Cubs team with major question marks surrounding the health of their Aces, a Reds team with serious injuries and no pitching staff, and then the most talented team in the division just fired their manager. We aren't out of this thing, and we have no reason to sell off any parts.
  5. Jenkins with another classic night. Seems like we've seem these all too much the last 4 years, especially this year. He's gotta be hurt.
  6. He might be a great motivator, which in-and-of itself is a good thing in pro sports, but he is one of the poorer in-game managers in baseball today. don't agree with that one bit. I almost always agree with (or at least understand) Yost's moves. He is our first manager in over a decade with a clue as to how to manage a pitching staff (and i think most comes from Maddux). The only move I typically don't agree with is not pinch-hitting for the catchers more often, but lately (tonight included) he's done that much more.
  7. a bad call at first against the Crew and Jenks, but I'm getting sick of him grounding out up the middle and to the right side so much. Geoff, anyone can tell you you are awesome when you go the other way! On a sidenote, congrats to Jenkins for setting a new single season high for his career...in GiDP
  8. tough luck there. Counsell with a rare error. Jenkins appears to have a guy at third, but the call goes the other way. A terrible pitch. A nice effort by Pods (seeing as the run would cross no matter what, might as well try for the out). Then Bennett gets worked a bit. Tough inning. How 'bout some runs. WE've had some good at bats tonight, but nothing to show
  9. anyone else thinking Lyle and Grieve will have huge second halfs (I think that's correct, and not "halves")? Lyle has established himself. With his selectivity, he may see his walks sky-rocket, and he could have a Bonds-like (in terms of avg and obp) second half where he just swings at the perfect pitches and walks a lot. With Grieve now basically our fulltime RF and 5-hitter, he'll come up with men on a lot, and should be able to thrive.
  10. great start to the second half by Scotty and Geoff. Counsell with 2 poor sac bunt attempts, but he got the job done.
  11. Gotta say that I like tonight's starters. Obermueller, Ford, Bradley, and I would assume Diggins or Jones is going for Arizona.
  12. oh, thanks guys. I never heard or read that. I just remember seeing Baseball Tonight after the game, and the boxscore on jsonline that night, and both showed the runs as all unearned
  13. I have Prior on my fantasy team, but I still want him to do an imitation of a gas powered christmas tree tonight. so like last time, brewers score all unearned runs
  14. Nefaste, I kind of skimmed through your post, but it seemed to be touching on something I thought of a while back. With no evidence to support this, I thought hard about which would be better...drafting mostly high schoolers, college kids, or some combination. Arguments are usually made for college kids and some combination, but I came to the conclusion that a team would be more likely to have a better draft taking all high school kids than all college kids. The reason is something you touched on. If in a given year (let's say 2001) there are 100 top high school players in a draft, and 70-80 sign. Then in 2004, you can say that there are another 100 high school kids in addition to the 20-30 college kids (a few more come out of nowhere, too, like Rickie Weeks). You have something like 5 teams only interested in drafting college kids, with lots of others leaning towards college. Even then, one could assume that those college players were not as talented out of high school as their peers that signed back in 2001 (how many of the top 30 or so high school talents don't sign?), so the ceilings on the top college players probably aren't as high as the ceilings of their high school counterparts in 2004. So while they may have impressive numbers in college, it is in part due to watered down competition (thus perhaps the college level of competition isn't that far superior to the high school level of competition)
  15. what's our record in July thus far? (gives me an excuse to use "thus" in a post)
  16. 13 pitches, 10 for strikes, 2 groundouts and a K. Not sure what's funnier, McCarver calling it a slider, or people on this board being so critical of someone who doesn't follow Sheets on a daily basis. I learned how foolish the media can be in 2002. The Crew was on national TV twice in a week, and in one game the ESPN announcer said that Sexson was a dead pull hitter (he then went for a double to right-center) and in the next game they praised how Sexson uses the whole field. They just don't do their homework. Give it a rest and enjoy the game.
  17. 2 batters, 7 pitches, 7 strikes, one K, one groundout
  18. Nobody is better at this job than DHonks. Let's toss our money in a hat and send him to a game. Thanks Foamboy1, always nice to know that others enjoy my amateur scouting reports. As for now I'm in Wisconsin for the summer (after vacationing last week), and won't return to AZ until mid August. I don't know when the league's season ends, but if possible, then I'll hit up some games. I can't wait for the Fall League. I have to imagine that some combination of Diggins, Jones, Ford, Parra, De La Rosa, Neugebauer, Weeks, Fielder, Hardy, Krynzel, Nelson, and Palmisano will be there.
  19. exciting 4th of July with both Saenz and Hendrickson going today. Also, with Obermueller once again collapsing after several solid innings AND the schedule finally allowing for a regular turn for a 5th starter soon, it seems likely he'll be down in Indy for only a few more starts, and will be recalled to pitch on the 19th. (when we have 18 game days in a row). Obermueller would only be making 1 more start before going down in that plan. Ben could be sent down in early August when the team has 4 days off, or else the entire rotation could pitch on 5 days rest at times (since most are young arms).
  20. Maybe send him to Huntsville and move Sarfate down to HD. can't see that happening. While not dominating, Sarfate has held his own in AA. He has had a few stretches of near dominance, too. I would expect Housman to AAA and Parra to AA, giving Huntsville Parra, Sartate, and Saenz as their mainstays. Ford might have a chance to reach Indy with a strong few weeks. Wildcards at this point who could affect promotions are Bruso, Diggins, Neugebauer, and Jones. I'm really not sure why Shelley and Stewart aren't already in Indy replacing Hernandez, Weibl, or Phelps.
  21. wow, the AZ club with 10 K's and only 1 BB. Great job anytime that happens in Rookie Ball!
  22. 4> Nice to see Ginter with one at-bat for the series. Nedley's comment about "riding the hot hand" apparently doesn't apply to him. Not that I didn't expect this, but I gotta stick up for my boy Ginter's so-called hot streak was hilarious. Did he hit a single ball hard during the streak? Well, there was that double inside the line, I think. I was at the game last Thurs, and it was incredible how aweful he was, yet somehow managed 3 hits to give the impression he'd had a good game. 3 hits totalling about 150 feet. One ball's an out if it doesn't hit the bag, another one is hit 2 feet to the left of the 3b and rolls off his glove, and the third was surrounded by 3 Rockies who somehow felt a ball 8 feet fair would manage to roll foul. I like Keith, but man he sure even managed to look bad while "hot." Hopefully next time he gets to start, either he produces more or we don't have to bat him 5th.
  23. Massbrew, you mean we can't access them? I remember thinking we got a steal cause we got 2 young stud lefty pitchers, a high batting avg doubles machine at 1b, an offensive catcher with solid defensive skills, a great contact hitter for SS, and a former allstar at 2b who I expected to play RF for us (as he was scheduled to do in AZ). I was somewhat wrong, and somewhat right. I still think Cappy is just scratching the surface. He's a slight groundball pitcher from what I gather, probably still regaining his velocity from before surgery (used to throw 93 more often), has now learned to pitch, and put up outstanding numbers in Tucson. Tucson is the key, since it's: 1) in the PCL, 2) notorious for poor infield conditions, and 3) in the heat and dry air. #2 is important, because bad bounces usually go as hits, not errors, and so pitchers tend to get unfairly punished, hence why Webb's numbers are betting in Phoenix than Tucson. Not to mention he finished that season shutting down the Dodgers (I was there) just about 13-15 months after Tommy John surgery.
  24. if he is confident with his fastball/changeup nikip43, when I saw him in the Fall league I'd estimate he threw 70% fastballs with enough movement that guys were either sawed off or couldn't get any lift on them. Lots of swings and misses by the game's top prospects at his fastball, too.
  25. Ben Hendrickson not spectacular, but economically effective once again, it's fun to point out that we're kind of disappointed by starts like this from Ben. Shows how far the system has come
