  1. 83-79 Millone, Guerra, Torres, Feliz, and Hughes are all dealt.
  2. That contract extension has a great chance to be among the worst in history
  3. good move. Hughes has a tremendous sinker. He and Neftali are both likely to do well, then get traded in July
  4. Sounds like a nice deal. I remember when he committed to my alma mater I was so excited. He's had a nice career
  5. I feel so old when I'm saying this (I'm 36), but my friends and I are SO done with all the darn hipsters and their pale ales and IPA's. Such awful beers, and they dominate the menus in so many locations these days.
  6. My thought was that the all-star game is really about the stars and the fans. What better way to share the game than with living legends at the mic? Fox can have Joe Buck and others all very actively involved.
  7. This is an easy perspective for most of us, but it's also misguided. Growing up in a middle class family, I would have agreed with Paul253, but I've moved beyond that. Many college football and basketball players (along with other sports) are from situations of poverty. I've heard countless stories of college athletes that can't afford to go on a date, because they have no money. I've heard stories of athletes that HAVE to go pro because they can't afford their free college career (how weird to say). NCAA rules severely restrict job opportunities for athletes, or else Ohio St boosters would be paying football players $100k for answering phones during their summers. So the NCAA basically tells people they have to uphold the purity of amateur status while working crazy hours. I favor a tiered system where college football and basketball players would receive roughly $2-5k per year, lesser sports perhaps $1-2k per year. Maybe conferences would get together to set uniform amounts for their schools. In theory, I'd love to see college athletes working without pay, instead grateful for all they are receiving. It was pretty funny in South Park when Cartman went to a university to ask questions about their slave labor.
  8. Just thought of this....anyone with experience getting an online petition going? We need a petition to get Uecker, Scully, and Enberg to call the all-star game. If random people can get pro-athletes to go to prom with them, or if we can petition to get a death star built, why not give us this one enjoyable night, and share it with all of America?
  9. wow, that's pretty ridiculous the animosity towards Barry's style. I don't care how someone shoots if it goes in. It's not embarrassing at all, it's extremely effective. Are you embarrassed when teams deploy knuckleball pitchers? Are you embarrassed when teams win on hail mary's or trick plays? It may be a novelty, but it's awesome. Plus, it's almost like you are completely disregarding his outstanding collegiate career and his tremendous athleticism. I'm in awe of the grad degree he's working towards. Yes, he came from far more privilege than most college hoops players, but he should be praised for his talents and be the epitome of a college student-athlete (given the other thread) rather than mocked for FT form. Maybe Hayes and Happ should be trying something new, because they need something that works better.
  10. college athletes should be paid.
  11. Mrtplush is correct here. 1- Happ wasn't called for a typical charge, he was called for the upper body shoulder. It nothing to do with a no charge zone. He did two efforts to drop his shoulder, both could have been called, but the official called the 2nd 3- Barry was dribbling quickly but the defender was moving and impeded his path, creating contact. Had Barry used his elbow or forearm it would have been offensive, but he didn't.
  12. It might be nice to have a rule similar to baseball where it's come out after HS OR not until "jr or 21." College basketball has evolved into a free agency model. That's one thing unique about Wisconsin, as they've mostly avoided the transfers. It's possibly because Wisconsin doesn't usually land top recruits, so perhaps they are more likely to buy into the system and stay for 4 years. Still, given that most American NBA players come from poverty, I can't blame them at all for pursuing the money when it first becomes available. It might be nice if the NBA expanded the draft for a round and allowed teams to draft the rights to a player, but still have him retain his NCAA eligibility (sort of like how they can draft European players and hold onto rights while they play in Europe). Then a lone team would be able to tell a player when they are ready to go pro.
  13. wow, great run for the Badgers. I really despise them, but I know that no lead is safe with under 2 minutes left. They are always the epitome of clutch, regardless of who is on the team. Kind of amazing that someone out-Wisconsin'd Wisconsin. No fouling up three was obviously a mistake. And Tplush, not saying the foul has to happen at 15 secs, but saying that with under 15 in that scenario, I'm looking for a spot to foul that is not going to put the guy on the line for 3. In OT, I'd have been tempted to take a Valvano-like approach on Wisconsin's last possession and foul Hayes with more than 4 seconds left to put him on the line, preserving enough time to ensure a Florida last shot. Instead the refs didn't catch Hayes' travel and called a foul, where he nailed the two shots. Great effort though. Didn't think Florida had a chance to end Bucky's run. Also, loving that there's a Jesuit school in the Final Four!!!!
  14. such brutal officiating in OT. I haven't seen one foul on Florida and I think they've called 4 or 5!
  15. I firmly believe that all coaches that don't foul with under 15 seconds and up 3 should be threatened with firing.
  16. Ender, we assumed it was due to the torn knee ligament. His velocity was down, but he was still effective.
  17. wow, this is a surprising game. I haven't seen much from Florida, but they look like a talented team with a little bit of everything in their arsenal
  18. So far Baylor is down 17. As I said before, if South Carolina wins this game, I can't fathom them not making it to next weekend. Their D is amazing, and that feeds their offense.
  19. as I've said, I'd love something near 64th St, Bell, or Scottsdale and the 101. I'd have tickets all spring long
  20. Of the half dozen times I've seen Baylor, they haven't easily beaten anyone. The also seem to never cover when I pick them. I think South Carolina's D shuts them down. Baylor just isn't that good.
  21. Would have been a good night in Vegas. Two games that seemed the most favorable were Kansas to cover and Xavier to cover. Would have lost with the Bulldogs. Wouldn't have done anything on Michigan-Oregon game...hate Big Ten and hate Pac-12.
  22. If Baylor wins, then I see Wisconsin giving them a great game. If South Carolina wins, then I see the Gamecocks in the Final Four. Their Offense and Defense are better than Wisconsin's. Seeing those 2nd half comebacks against Marquette and Duke has me in awe.
  23. Two of them did for sure - Ahmed Hill and Satchel Pierce. Hill played against Wisconsin, looks like he averaged about 11 points a game this year. Pierce barely played his first two seasons and appears to have transferred to Penn State. Pierce isn't on the team having transferred to Penn St last May, and alternates between adequate starter or solid backup. Shayok is very good for Virginia. Cohen will be at UWGB in 2018-19, I think.
  24. Congrats to Bucky fans out there. I thought Nova was the far better team. Even though I felt the calls favored Wisconsin (several missed travels, lots of slaps on shots, and pushes on rebounds in the paint), they deserved to win the game. They definitely outplayed Nova. They're a physical team, and with refs letting them play, Wisconsin shined and was able to be the grittier team. Weird trend we noticed the first 3 days was refs were not calling many "and 1's." They often were waiting until shots missed and were rebounded before calling shooting fouls. We guessed there was a decision to keep the games moving by the officiating committee.
  25. I looked back at my Vegas log from last March, and there were 6 or 7 games with higher seeds as dogs. That's the most I've seen in my 8 years in Vegas for opening weekend. This year I'm showing Minnesota favored by 1, while Wichita St is favored by 6.5 and Vanderbilt -1.5. So two lower seeds currently favored, although it's quite possible that Marquette, Middle Tennessee, Xavier, Seton Hall, Oklahoma St, Rhode Island, and Michigan St could flip depending on how the initial money comes in. Wichita St is severely under seeded. I know I've mentioned it before, but they remind me of that '95 or '96 College of Charleston squad that was #16 in the country, but given a 12-seed before making a Sweet 16 run. Given the Shockers' defense, depth, and 3-point shooting, they could make a fairly deep run this year
