  1. Ouch. I was driving home from work one day in a T-storm and went through a big puddle. A white flash went all around my car and all I could see was light for a fraction of a second. The power on my car (digital display) was shut off for half a second as well.. was pretty freaky.
  2. the genius of this move is that he can move him back to the 9 spot tomorrow and thus will have accomplished shaking up the lineup in 2 ways..
  3. maybe they are just trying to slide him into a roster spot while smokescreening fans with a Yost firing. Could happen is all I'm saying. We can hope. In another thread it was pointed out that Yost is our Buck Rodgers, so who is our Don Sutton? Ugh, I hope its not Tavarez. Five cent arm on a two cent head.
  4. on his lineup change, Yost commented "I was actually planning on sticking with kend-zie in the 9-hole, but to my surprise my hat told me otherwise. I couldnt believe when I drew his name 8th out of my cap. Imagine my surprise! Well, he's a battler and we need to find a better spot for those kinds of players."
  5. if the Brewers do make a playoff run, I'd like to see his bat replace Kapler or Dillon. How is the defense?
  6. if there was a position in the lineup where power is inconsequential, it's leadoff. I'm not saying zero, but I'm more concerned about OBP when you start off the inning and have Braun/Fielder/Hart behind you.
  7. Hardy did complain about his spot in the lineup, and Yost promptly moved him to the 2-hole for a stretch. I don't see them moving Gamel to first, because he has shown steady improvement defensively and he fills an organizational need. They will give him time to develop there I believe and he should become serviceable. If they were to replace Prince with Gamel at first, you have essentially closed the door on any opportunity to bring up a talented hitter with weak defense, and we know how the org likes to draft those guys. You will have an outfield of Braun, Hart, and LaPorta for a very long time, which isnt bad, but its subpar defensively and there is no room to bring in a new OF that can hit. By putting LaPorta at first, you can bring up/in a speedy CF or yet another big bat.
  8. maybe I'm too high on 'prospects', but his average and power have been creeping up and he's just 21. With his off-the-charts range, he will turn a ton of singles into outs and could all but eliminate ground balls finding a hole on the left side. If he can hit .270ish, they should find a spot for him as he will more than compensate with his feet...
  9. amazing what playing the Pirates and Nats will do to a struggling player's stats
  10. in other words, you are both saying to throw out the much bigger body of evidence and go by the fact he had a subpar May.
  11. Weeks' defense has been improving and he makes plays with his feet that offset his gaffes, so he is serviceable with plenty of upside. His stats should improve offensively, so I see no urgency in dealing him. Hardy has not regained his form yet, so its hard to judge him. With Escobar about ready, Hardy could be the odd man out, but probably not to start 2009. Maybe 2010. Gamel is definitely not a clear upgrade defensively over Hall. Hall in his first year there..no surprise about the errors. Meanwhile, Gamel is showing steady improvement. I would expect next year Hall is slightly better defensively, but Gamel will have the better bat. I think that could make hall the super-utility or trade bait. Prince vs LaPorta would likely be a wash next year. LaPorta was not a great defensive 1B and he's been away from that position. His height doesnt offer much advantage for reach. I'd like to see LaPorta start at first next year, but mainly bc that would mean we had better pitching.
  12. Kendall has a career OBP of .374 and is at .353 right now. The guy in the 2-hole has a .311 OBP and a career of .340, who you would essentially be moving. Only Prince has a higher OBP than Kendall right now (.366). If the object is to put someone on base for Prince and Braun to drive in, then it makes sense to put Kendall up there. That is the same point of batting him 9th.
  13. Disagree on that thought. He was faster and more powerful prior to last year. He battled back injuries and shoulder injuries and it's anyone's guess as to whether he will or won't be the same player again. He ran that time last year. And last year he hit 26 HR's. I don't know where the claim can be made, nor justified that he used to be stronger and faster, but now isn't because of back and shoulder injuries that preceded the time we're talking about, and a HR total that was one more than he hit in 300+ games in the minors, and far more than he's hit in the big leagues. So when were these injuries? The shoulder was in Triple A before he ever came up. The Back injuries were all minor injuries. Spasm's and what not. Kinda hard to make the claim that it's made him this vastly different player when he performed better during those injuries than ever before them. Not a specific injury, but he was complaining about back problems half way and towards the end of the season. I thought it probably made a contribution to his sudden power shortage.
  14. by batting Kendall first, you can accomplish the same goal of him not hitting into DPs. Plus, with his OBP, he will be able to get on base for Braun/Fielder. Plus, you get his plate discipline, seeing a lot of pitches. Plus you take Weeks out of the leadoff spot and Cameron out of the top of the order.
  15. they arent in the same position as they were with Sexson. They have regained the fanbase and have a new owner who has demonstrated to the casual fans a strong commitment to retaining top talent.
  16. Disagree on that thought. He was faster and more powerful prior to last year. He battled back injuries and shoulder injuries and it's anyone's guess as to whether he will or won't be the same player again.
  17. This is what I've always believed.. I know people here rail for lack of accountability for the young guys, but I've always had the feeling its just lip service to the media in order to 'protect his boys'. I've always thought he is wound too tightly, as evidenced by several 'dressing downs' of pitchers publicly. I actually think the clubhouse is toxic but for the opposite reason.
  18. Please dont think, Ned - we know how that turns out. As for Kendall batting 9th or 8th for reasons of getting him on base before the big bats, I'd actually lead him off. Shifting Rickie to 2nd in the lineup puts our best OPS guys at the front of the lineup. Both have plate patience and can get base respectably (for this team). He doesnt steal bases, but he is serviceable. This might negate some of Rickie's speed, but it reduces the pressure of Rickie having to take so many pitches and always Rickie to use his power a bit more. It also moves Cameron out of the 2-hole and puts him in position to give Prince/Braun some protection: 1 Kendall 2 Weeks 3 Braun 4 Prince 5 Hart 6 Cameron 7 Branyan/Hall 8 Hardy 9 Pitcher For 2010 (assuming Fielder gone): 1 Brantley (or other CF) 2 Gamel 3 LaPorta 4 Braun 5 Hart 6 Salome/Lucroy 7 Weeks 8 Escobar 9 Pitcher
  19. The Hurricane looked good in his callup, but has been pretty weak in AAA so far this year. A .650 OPS won't have the bigs knocking on the door.
  20. they wouldnt because a lot of fans see him as the brightest spot on a poor pitching staff and thus equate our commitment to success to him. It also signals they will throw in the towel on their season.
  21. Absolutely!!! Totally agree with the direction of this rant! His inability to help pitching today from the bench was simply inexcusable! I would also fault him for the injuries to Riske, Gagne, Sheets, Capuano, and Gallardo.
  22. with Sheets innings pitched down last year, will he net Type A draft picks?
  23. I thought the Vargas demotion to the pen was a non-issue. I know they floated it out there that "someone like him doesn't deserver the pen", but I don't know what that means exactly aside from justifying their position. As much as I'm a fan of the Brewers brass, you have to start wondering about their evaluation when it comes to their internal pitching decisions the past few years. They didn't want to keep Doug Davis, who is now getting $7M per as a #3-type and putting up better stats than all but Sheets the last 2 years. But they were wiling to snap up Suppan for $10M+ longer term. They didn't stick it out (or maybe develop him fully?) with Eveland, who has a 2.90 ERA and just finished a complete game. Man, how many pitchers aside from Sheets has gone 9 this year? I realize it made perfect sense at the time to drop Vargas. But you take the risk of the Linebrink trade and add it all together, you start to get concerned about their pitching evaluation. The franchise has been too "snake bitten" for too long when it comes to pitching.
  24. Let's say the Brewers are 10+ games by the trade deadline. With all the talk of making a run for it this year, would management throw in the towel and actually deal their ace, knowing they won't likely re-sign him? He could definitely help put a contender "over the hump" and his salary is favorable so you have to think he could pull in a good prospect arm in return. But I don't know if management would have the guts to make this move. They sold their fanbase on winning now, and this would signal an end to this season, and yet another year of promises ahead to the future. Also, I would think the common fan would think this is another indicator of "same old Brewers, giving away their best pitcher". Would they run the risk of alienating the common fan to do what's best for the franchise's health?
