Thanks for that link, I was unaware of that I just knew for a fact that Molitor was effected about the Tony Peters news. As the "ignitor" did his not getting on base effect the rest of the players? It would be interesting knowing the exact date Tony Peters kingpin verdict came down since that was my recollection of Molitor's demise in 83. You looked at the 10 game losing streak but what happened the 4 games before and the game after: 9-5: 0-4 6-3 Win batting .289 9-6: 1-5 5-11 L 9-7: 0-3 5-6 L 9-8: 0-4 2-1 W So in the 4 games prior Molitor went 1-16 with Milw winning two games where Molitor went 0-8. The 10 game losing streak: 1: 1-4 1-2 L 2: 1-4 0-4 L (Molitor moved from 1st to 7th in lineup) 3: 0-0 4-6 L (dnp) 4: 0-4 0-1 L 5: 1-4 1-2 L 6: 1-3 1-4 L 7: 2-4 1-8 L 8: 0-5 4-5 L 9: 1-5 9-10 L 10: 1-5 7-8 L That was Molitor being 8-38 The game the Brewers broke the 10 game streak Molitor went: 0-5 11-7 W So Molitor offensively did little to break the streak so now it's 8-43 post Tony: .186 If you add the 4 games Molitor did poorly starting on 9-5 where Molitor went 1-16, Molitor hit 9-59 or .153. On Sept 5th Molitor was hitting .289. Less than a month later Molitor ended the season hitting .270. If anyone knows when the kingpin news broke I would find it interesting how it relates to Molitors fade. Thanks,

I don't know what you are getting at rlu so let me ask you: Is consistancy important at all or were people happy the way Jenkins would get hot and cold? As for one person being responsible for losing ten in a row that is true but hearing Ned say Prince tried to hit 3 run homers with no one on base. That said: his 7 HR month with 9 RBI's is pretty revealing. I will give you how a guy can effect a 10 game losing streak. Late 83 with it was mentioned that Tony Peters was a king pin, Molitor slumped horribly and the Brewers went from 1st to 5th during a 10 game losing streak. And that was the start of this demise. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

rlu I agree with most of what you say and consistancy is not the most important thing unless you are a team like Milwaukee who loses 10 games in a row and is out of contention in such a weak division. The consistancy is just interesting imo since so many people predicted Overbay to fade in the second half off of a two year history. Toronto loves Overbay and he is in a good place so we will see what happens. I'm sure he feels good finally getting long term security.
-
end what will be interesting to me is what happens the next 4 yrs. So many people don't see much of a future for Overbay but see a great future for Fielder. After 4 more years, Fielder will be available or almost available for the big bucks. Will Milwaukee pay him? Will he walk away from a big offer from Milw ala el diablo? How will these 4 yrs compare? We know Overbay outperformed him by a lot this year, what happens next? Toronto wants to tie Lyle up for long term so I believe they think more highly of him than you do endaround, but time will tell.

Overbay had his career year at age 29 (this year) with the line: .293/.372/.467/.839 As a rookie, at age 22, Prince put up this line: .272/.344/.481/.825 rlu I respect your opinion immencely but let's get Overbay's numbers correct at least: .312/.372/.508/.880 I don't know if you followed Overbay much this year but he got hot when Toronto went interleague then stayed hot the second time around the new teams. I am familiar with Jamesian age theories but wonder why you don't go by the theory that it takes a person a year to get used to a new league. Well it took Overbay one time around as you can see by his consistancy. .275/.314/.310/.312/.333/.326 monthly batting averages. I am not saying the Brewers should not have traded Overbay but am only pointing out this year Overbay out-produced Fielder. I wonder if Fielder will out play Milwaukee when he's due the big bucks but in the next 4 yrs not out-produce Overbay in all but the last year. Should be interesting to watch. As for height not mattering, how many high balls tipped off of Fielders glove this year or just outside his reach? I never said he was 5'7" but by comparing him to players on other teams on first base the 5'11" players are taller than him. If consistancy matters at all: Once again Fielder's monthly averages: .344/.297/.208/.303/.221/.239. Fielder will improve and I feel a player performs better in his second year in a new league than the first even at age 30 next year. Time will tell.

Let me say the trade worked out well for both teams and an analysis for one year is just that but I found it interesting: First off there was speculation that Lyle would fade away in the second half since he did his two seasons in Milwaukee: Pre-All-Star: .294 ave, .363 obp, .494 slug Post-All-Star: .332 ave, .383 obp, .525 slug So a two year look didn't forsee the future on second half fades: Prince: Pre-All-Star: .265 ave, .320 obp, .479 slug Post-All-Star: .278 ave, .381 obp, .490 slug Overbay was better in all those stats: Let's look at monthly totals and look at consistancy since that was such a big issue with Milwaukee especially in the second half: Monthly averages: April:..ave.2B..HR..RBI..BB..K..SLG..TB Prince: .344, 5, 5, 16, 9,25,.552,53 Lyle: ....275, 2,2,11,12,14,.400..32 Prince up 6 catagories to 2 May:..ave.2B.HR.RBI.BB.K.SLG.TB Prince: .297,12,4,17,7,24,.535,54 Lyle: ....314,8,6,18,11,14,.569,58 Lyle up 7-1 Season ytd: 9-7 Lyle June...ave.2B.HR.RBI.BB.K.SLG.TB Prince: .208,3,7,9,9,17,.479,46 Lyle: ....310,8,6,19,11,20,.570,57 Lyle up 6-2 Season ytd: 15-9 Lyle: Back to back consistant months for Lyle while Prince knocked in 2 teammates all month. July..ave.2B,HR,RBI,BB,K,SLG,TB Prince: .303,3,3,13,9,19,.438,39 Lyle...: .312,9,2,14,2,20,.450,49 Lyle up 5-3 Season ytd: 20-12 Lyle: If you remember Prince got real hot after the All-Star break, he must have gotten cold too: Aug: ave.2B,HR,RBI,BB,K,SLG,TB Prince: .221,4,5,13,14,19,.421,40 Lyle:.....333,13,3,18,7,16,.556,55 Lyle up 6-2 Season total: 26-14: A blow out comparison Oct-Sept: ave,2B,HR,RBI,BB,K,SLG,TB Prince: .239,8,3,11,11,21,.432,38 Lyle....:.326,6,3,11,12,12,.500,43 Lyle up 5-1 Season total: 31-15 Now that shows some monthly dominance and consistancy for Overbay: 2006 totals: ave, 2B,HR,RBI,BB,K,SLG,TB Prince:..........271,35,28,81,59,125,.484,285 Lyle:.............312,46,22,92,55,96,.511,295 Let's look at it this way: Monthly averages: Lyle::: Prince .275/.344 .314/.297 .310/.208 .312/.303 .333/.239 .326/.265 I'm curious what some of you stellar baseball fans think about this considering Toronto wants to sign Lyle to a long term contract because of his approach at the plate and professionalism while Milwauke loves Prince but some wonder if his lack of height and experience at 1B will destine him to the AL DH role. He is young so his projection numbers are sky high but you can't teach height. Do you think Lyle will keep on getting better since he started turning it on once inner-league play got going where he knew some of the pitchers then got it going second time around the AL pitchers. Will he just keep on hitting line drives since he will be even more familiar with the AL pitchers next year? Any thoughts?

Any stats on bad plays not called errors?
RoseBowlMtg replied to RoseBowlMtg's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Really? Why? Come on rlu why don't you start tracking that!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif -
We've seen Ricky boot double play balls not called an error since he got one out. Is there a site that tracks that? How about balls Fielder just misses ala Hall's great play last week of his missed scoops? Just curious, Thanks

Anyone think Kolb did roids? He got his velocity up late in his career and it has dropped after the testing of 04. Speculative enough? -

Not to turn this into Overbay but this is interesting imo: "Last year, I struggled," Overbay said. "Those are the kinds of things I look back and know I can do better. There's always room for improvement." This spring, Overbay's numbers indicate that he is struggling again. So far, the left-hander is hitting .217 with six RBIs in 16 games. Overbay said that he's been taking a slower approach during his first Spring Training in the American League, though, in order to try and get more accustomed to some of the pitchers he'll be seeing throughout the year. "Guys use Spring Training for different things," Overbay said. "For me, going to another league and facing new pitchers, I want to see as many pitches as possible. So I'm not going to be as aggressive. I want to know what they are -- if they have a breaking ball or what their stuff is doing." -

An interesting thing to watch this year imo will be to see where they play Fielder compared to how far Overbay was off of first base last year. The Brewers seemed a lot happier about Overbay's defense than many here so watching how differently they position Fielder should be interesting. That rbi to right would have been right where Overbay played previously. Any thoughts? -

The reality is, of course, that hitting home runs and bunting are both skills. If a guy succeeds in either effort, he's doing a good job. But hitting home runs is a much more valuable skill for winning games than bunting is. says gregmag: Granted HR's are much more valuable but not everyone can do that. Take Podsednik's horrible attempt last night as an example. Scott has 1 HR all year but should be able to bunt. Actually where Figgens was playing the sign should have been taken off since Figgens was 25 feet onto the grass, so Pods could have slapped it to left which we know he is good at. That to me is a better use of "small ball".
-
With a runner on second with no outs why is it considered sacrificing an out when the batter grounds out to the second baseman? If it goes through then it's not considered small ball but it is smart. I agree with how the Cardinals do it. Go for it early in the count if you get your pitch smash it. When down I would hope every player would try to advance the runner. Plainly spoken it would be better for a ground out to the second baseman in this case than to the left side of the infield. Some players can do it, I believe more need to.
-
rlu I am not debating or debunking your knowledge. When you say Boston scored more runs because they smashed the ball around you are correct. They also have a payroll 4 times more and for a small market team to score more with lesser talent they need to move the lead off double to third which does not go down as a sacrifice but is important. Hit it to the right side of the infield and if it goes thru great but if it doesn't you had a productive out. Do they have stats for productive outs. I really only noticed Overbay doing it consistently and he won't be around next year. Can teams learn this? I believe lesser talented players like the B squad for the Cardinals that beat us at the end of the year proved that it can be a great way to produce if you have 4 guys playing that way. Now that was an observation and I don't know if stats debunk me but you would think when a player gets congratulated for doing a little thing that would catch on. If that would help us go from 2 runs to 3 runs and 3 to 4 runs that would be a simple way imo to improve.
-
Thanks for the link rlu! It may seem like the Brewer production was typical but as I see it here are the playoff teams and how many times the scored 2 or fewer runs: Milw: 45 Ana: 30 Atl: 27 Bos: 22 Chi: 34 Hou: 44 NY: 27 SD: 46 StL: 28 Getting that leadoff double in was a huge problem this year and a ground ball to second and a fly ball or ground ball up the middle scores. A one run increase in 8 of the 24 2 run games would give the Brewers a much better chance to improve by 5-8 games. Thanks for the great link!
-
It's disturbing that we were shutout 12 times. Also, we scored 2 runs or less during more than 1/4 of our schedule. brewers4eric what is even more disturbing to me is our 0-26 record when scoring less than 2 runs. 0-26 now you have to have win 81 out of 136 a 60.15% clip to reach .500 ball. I bring up Philly and St.Louis just from watching them this year they had so many players doing the right thing on the bases and moving their teammates along. It is simple but not done by very many teams. It must be frustrating coaching that and not getting through to the players. Maybe it will improve.
-
The problem I have with runs scored on and average basis is that if: The Brewers scored: 2, 2, 9, 5 = 18 runs or 4.5 runs per game. That is two games most likely a loss, a game most likely a win and a game with a 50/50 chance of winning. If the Brewers scored 3,3,8,4 = 4.5 runs per game. Now The Brewers have a 50/50 chance of winning 3 games along with a great chance of winning one. Thus with the same average runs scored you have a better chance if you can get some of those games up to 3 runs a game. That can be easily done imo with better fundamentals ala the Cards and Philly. Advancing the runner and not just risp. Score an extra run a game with better fundamentals is not too far of a stretch. If it can happen in a third of the games a 7-10 game improvement is possible imo. Oh yeah with similar pitching!
-
I know that has been out for awhile so I wanted to look at how those runs scored broke down to wins: Here was the Brewers record per their runs scored: 0: 0-12 1: 0-14 2: 5-19 5-45 when scoring 2 runs or less: 3: 7-19 4: 13-9 5: 11-7 31-36 when scoring btwn 3-5 runs: 6: 15-5 7: 6-1 8: 8-1 9: 4-0 10: 2-1 11: 3-0 12: 4-0 13: 1-0 14: 2-0 45-8 when scoring 6 or more runs: Let's compare that to the benchmark Cardinals: 2 or fewer runs: 6-28 6 or more runs: 58-10 The Cards scored 805 runs, .270 BA, 2343 TB, .423 slug The Crew scored 726 runs, .259 BA, 2303 TB, .423 slug So offensively the Brewers had the same slugging as the Cards and only 40 fewer total bases but scored 79 fewer runs. How come? It seems you need to score 6 runs to have a great chance to win and the Cards did that 68 times to the Brewers 53. The Brewers winning % was .849 to the Cards .853 when scoring 6 runs or more. Thus: Score more runs and you win more. That's easy. It's the 2 runs or less games: Milwaukee: 5-45: .100% 50 St Louis: 6-28: .176% 34 There in lies 16 games you are only going to win one or two. So coming in 6th in runs scored might be inflated a bit with all the 8 runs and more games. For the Brewers to get to the next level they need to get their 0-2 run games up to 3-4 runs. A far fewer leadoff doubles stranded. If they can drop their 0-2 run games by 15 next year they will be right in it imo. Any thoughts?
