  1. Great thread! I thought I would see how these guys production was with risp. Great seasons but you need "clutch" hitting. I took the top 10 yrs along with Prince and Ryan this year along with one other player's year. Player: BArisp: OBP: SLG: OPS: BAbip: H-AB: PA: 2B: 3B: HR: RBI: BB: K Prince: .247: .393: .462: .855: .265: 23-93: 122: 5: 0: 5: 45: 21: 25 Braun: .342: .395: .630: 1.025: .377: 25-73: 86: 4: 1: 5: 36: 8: 19 Yount: 82: .375: .405: .556: .961: 72: 60-160: 188: 10: 2: 5: 77: 15: 17 Coop 80: .416: .478: .699: 1.172: .388: 72-173: 211: 15: 2: 10: 105: 27: 11 Molitor 91: 326: .450: .464: .914: .358: 45-138: 172: 7: 3: 2: 54: 31: 17 Sexson: 03: .291: .403: .589: .992: .304: 51-175: 216: 11: 1: 13: 83: 31: 42 Benji 80: .273: .386: .476: .862: .254: 39-143: 184: 5: 0: 8: 73: 31: 22 Yount 89: .353: .443: .549: .992: .371: 54-153: 187: 9: 3: 5: 78: 27: 20 Coop 82: .288: .335: .489: .824: 280: 53-184: 208: 15: 2: 6: 83: 16: 16 Harper 70: .252: .381: .480: .861: .267: 31-123: 157: 5: 1: 7: 51: 27: 30 Yount 87: .321: .411: .519: .930: .348: 60-187: 228: 11: 4: 6: 80: 32: 31 Coop 83: .321: .371: .487: .858: .318: 62-193: 222: 11: 0: 7: 87: 27: 32 Jaha 96: .305: .399: .563: .962: .315: 51-167: 198: 2: 1: 11: 87: 27: 32 Simba 83: .373: .423: 544: .967: .379: 63-169: 196: 10: 2: 5: 91: 19: 18 I have always thought Ted Simmons 91 RBI's with risp with only 5 HR's was special and only Coop in 80 had more RBI's with risp. Only Coop's 80 and Yount's MVP 82 were there better BA's. Coop was the only one better with babip and no one had more hits. Only if the Tony Peters news didn't come out in August that year could have been pretty special. Stats do bring out interesting conclusions.
  2. Do you approach Rickie for slowing up going around 2nd on Hart's hit or do you let it go? Do you figure Rickie knows he should watch the 3rd base coach and won't do it again or is this a teaching moment? Do you not spoil a great game back?
  3. 1993 17 writers voted for Simmons and he didn't receive the 5% necesary to remain on the ballot. Drew Olsen who used to head the baseball writers assoc said Simmons omission is the biggest injustice of all. A very intelligent man who will be back in town Tuesday does not make an issue about this ala Gary Carter but he is so deserving it is just a joke. Name another position player who leads in hits not in the HOF. Rose doesn't count but you know he would be in if.... Name another position player who is second in RBI's not in the HOF. Name a catcher in the 70's who had more hits Name a catcher in the 70's who had more RBI's Name any ML player who led his team in RBI's for 7 consecutive years. On and On! Happy 58th Teddy!
  4. As August 14th approaches I hope some of you will approach Simba and tell him the injustice the HOF voters did upon him. Here is a refresher. 5. I heard Orel Hersheiser say that about Bonds and Biggio specifically. He said it was absolutely unfair for the two of them since they took away the inside of the plate and he could only pitch outside which is a huge advantage. This was about 6 weeks ago I heard Orel rage about that. Cheater! Those who say everyone did it ask Mike Greenwell how he feels about coming in second to Canseco in the MVP. Sure Bonds gets more because he is so successful but it is also because he is such a jerk. In America if you admit your misdoings people forgive. Barry is not there yet if ever.
  6. Way to hustle out of the box for your first row HR! Quite a bit different from when you were pounding them. Now fewer and much much shorter! Hmmmmmm. You should have paid taxes on your card signings when you go and use that money to buy your girl friend a condo!
  7. Very telling quote from Melvin on Dillon: Even more impressive to Brewers GM Doug Melvin was Dillon's 50 walks to 34 K's. "To be disciplined amd still have power, We don't have anybody on our club like that who can go up there and work it and take close pitches." As good as the young Brewers have been it appears Melvin wishes for better approaches. ..............walks/K's Braun: 18/51 Estrada: 7/33 Fielder: 50/87 Hart: 28/62 Mench: 9/17 Hardy: 33/55 Hall: 24/76 Jenkins: 24/76 Miller: 10/19 Counsell: 34/33 Graffanino: 23/43 A better mix would help everyone.
  8. The New Crew is in a different situation now which is so appreciative. Looking back it wasn't too hard to achieve to this level so far. Be bad for so long then you get Sheets at #10, Weeks @ #2, Prince @ #6, Braun @ #8 I believe. This along with a good second round pick in JJ and Hart outplaying all predictions after being drafted in the 6th round I believe. These numbers are off the top of my head but being bad for so long has set us up for the base of strength for years to come. It's the way the system has been set up and Melvin and Jack Z have made it work. I wonder if Ted Thompson is looking at the Crew as a model in a completely different situation. Jamie give one good boo out for me tonight if you would. It's not the worst thing what Glavine said but it bugged me.
  9. Not infuriating saying that the small market teams don't have a place in baseball? I am glad Glavine wasn't part of the NFL committee wanting Green Bay not to have a team since they are small. Big city all me mine ours! Maybe Atlanta should just play the Mets and Dodgers all the time. To say there is no place for small market teams is a sign of egomania imo. So I hope you don't see history tonight. But have fun anyway.
  10. Does anyone remember when Glavine was speaking for the players association stating that he thought Milwaukee shouldn't have a team if it couldn't support itself without revenue sharing? I hope some fans at the game tonight remember that.
  11. Getting to the Cards bullpen early with a double dip today is huge. As far as JJ and his power surge I agree with you. He is a much better hitter this year since he is pulling the ball, but....lately they are throwing to him outside and as long as he pops those up they will keep on doing it. Rip a few to RF and they will come back inside then turn on the ball. JJ put one into the gift HR picnic area this year, he can stroke it that way. He's been on 18 HR;'s for over a month now (June 25) and I think his approach the last two games will get him more pitches to pull. How many times do you hear players say you hit HR's when you aren't trying. Too many are trying too hard imo. Go with the outside pitches and you will get one's to pull. We make too many outs on bad pitches.
  12. Brian Anderson said Skalen told him last night prior to the game you will really like our approach tonight. That to me sounds like the coaches really emphasized you need to move the runners, go where the pitch is pitched. Small ball isn't a negative. When fans get mad at Bill Hall trying to pull an outside pitch but when he goes with the pitch that's what everyone wants. Hit the screen with 2 strikes! They've been preaching that all year and a young team needs constant reminding. Let's see how long it will be til the next reminding happens. Prince gets credit for using the whole field Jenkins is said to be on the ball when he goes to left Hart's HR up the middle last night was perfect JJ is so much more productive when he goes to right. When Yost says we have too many easy fly outs that says alot. Put the ball in play and make them make a play.
  13. Lyle Overbay; Class and plays a wide 1B while working the count Jake Peavy: I love his attitude Whichever Brewer is up or pitching My 9 yr little league boy Right now whoever is pitching vs the Cubs
  14. Who were the other black players treated so badly? Bernie Williams? Any other "all black" players during Sheff's Yankee tenure? Come on NY media get Williams' opinion on this and any other "black" Yankee. How does Sheff know how "non-black" players were treated "inside" Torre's office?
  15. Great and my one "viking" Mike Cuddyer on my fantasy team went 0-6! I hate the Vikings!
  16. 2007: Prince: .278, 27-66 Lee: .334, 6-41 Pujols: .315, 16-51 Young: .337, 8-41 RISP 07: Prince: .232 Lee .375 Pujols: .278 Young: .344 2004 All-Stars Pujols: .304, 21-57 Casey: .352, 15-54 Helton: .352, 15-53 Thome: .298, 27-58 Those All Stars in 07: Pujols: .315, 16-51 Casey: .294, 1-31 Helton: .309, 7-46 Thome: .275, 12-36 How about non-04 All Star vs 07 All Stars: Prince: .278, 27-66 Lee: .334, 6-41 Pujols: .315, 16-51 Young: .337, 8-41 Overbay: .344, 10-62 In 04 Overbay didn't make it because of the competition and that he was new. Casey had his only power yr and Thome wasn't hurt. Interesting how baseball differs in 3 yrs. Any thoughts?
  17. 3000 and all for one team way to go Craig. I liked his reference to running everything out hard like the previous players did in their time. He is proud of that and I hope some Brewers took note.
  18. OK I was at the game and I have three questions regarding Ryan Braun. 1: With a pop up just in front of the pitchers mound Braun flew in and grabbed the ball in front of Graffy. My seats are right there and I didn't hear him call. Who should be calling for that? 2: Again a pop up right in front of me where Miller and Braun dropped a pop up and no one yelled for the ball. Isn't that Braun's call to call the catcher off since that is easier? 3: When Bill Hall threw the ball to third not on target, Counsell was in perfect position to cut the errant throw off to get the runner going to second. Counsell looked frustrated when he saw where the throw ended up. With his back to the play at third isn't it the 3baseman's job to yell cut and Braun's non communication cause a third misplay. It will be interesting seeing if there are any improvements in that area. Anyone know if there are definite responsibilities given in these instances? Thanks
  19. How bout that clutch hitting! Oh yeah there is no such thing! I mean how bout that hitting with risp whatever you want to call it. You could just feel the pressure Hall and Estrada were feeling and it showed big time!
  20. What's up with Braun unclipping then reclipping his gloves after every pitch? Then doing it after a throw to first.
  21. My prediction for tonight is one of the Giles bros lead it off with a bunt seeing how Ryan throws off balance from the start. I'm so fired up for this game!
  22. Yes that is the everlasting question. How long to you ride a hot hand. They did it with Mench, they are currently doing it with Gwynn but he is slipping a bit. They did it with Gross for a game after he hit two dingers. All the talk of different lineups Ned has been pretty consistant only starting Counsell yesterday to give JJ a breather. Lefty/Righty and going with the hot hand has been pretty productive imo. Let's see how many Brewers work the count to 6 pitches at least. That would help imo.
  23. So what's the matter with putting them up there while they are doing what you need up there? Mench's success early this year gave him playing time and now he's not playing as much. Small sample which helped the team so why is this different? So few players on this team work the count that to me is benefitial up front.
  24. Chris do you really believe there aren't situations where there are more pressure than other times? On ESPN this morning why was there criticism on LeBron for passing up the last shot? Chip Beck still gets criticized for not going for the green on 13 at the Masters in two where people say he didn't have the guts to try? He went for it the first day on Thursday but not on Sunday in second place. How come? Should he play the same way every shot? The top 50 list on "The Best Damn Sports Show" shows many clutch hits so let's criticize every one of those players who shined. Molitor, Yount, Carew and Brett did what Simmons did so maybe it is not that uncommon for good hitters to excel in the clutch. I thought I read a study where only a couple players hit 10 points higher over a long career in the clutch. I looked up those names and only omitted Johnny Bench who hit .262 with risp and without risp. All hail Johhny Bench for not letting his teammates down even though he hit less than Simmons. Bill Hall's last two HR's have come in blowouts. Do you think he was more relaxed and wasn't pressing? Clutch situations involve extra pressure and some players were better than others at it. Explained away by situations maybe but over a 21 yr period is a good enough sample size showing the excellence. Reggie Jackson Mr October. Dave Winfield Mr May. Do you think Steinbrenner appreciated the difference?
