  1. Take these numbers for what they are: Prince his 38 HR's this year. He had two games where he hit more than one HR: A 7-2 win where he hit 2 and the second last gm of the year where he hit 3 in a 6-4 win. So HR's in 27 wins and 8 losses. So we are looking at replacing him for those 27 wins, HR's are not exclusive but play with me> Here are the number of times he hit HR's and how much we won by. Thus the importance of his HR's Times/Margin of Win 7/1 6/2 2/3 2/4 4/5 3/6 1/7 1/8 1/10 So I would say his HR's were vital in 1,2 and 3 run victories. A 4 run Victory is just outside and not ever a save situation http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif 7 one run victories where if he didn't hit the HR we would have been tied 6 two run victories where if he didn't hit the HR we would have won 2 three run victories where if he didn't hit the HR we would have won by 2 So 15 games his HR's had a big time effect. 12 games his HR's were in big wins and had little effect. So will we get a replacement 1B who will hit a HR in a 1 run victory? Will the taller firstbaseman make a defensive play the shorter bulkier Prince could not? All the infielders had 15 or more errors. Get a good taller firstbaseman and watch those numbers go down. I wonder how many close games we lost by an infield error or misplay that should have been made. I see DM having a great opportunity to reshape this team and actually perform better with a better defensive first baseman.
  2. I have 4 tix for Tuesday night if anyone is interested. PM me.
  3. Make that 14 HR's and I know what you mean end but Hardy's bad year he had a .714 ops vs .600 and .614 for his replacements. Health is the issue with JJ but we are fired up about Betancourt 16 dingers last year and Hardy has 14 in less than half the AB's. I don't like to second guess since it is too easy but....
  4. Here are the stats for the SS's for the Crew who came after JJ vs JJ's numbers this year: Player: AB, R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, CS, BB, K, ave, obp, ops Escobar: 506,57,119,14,10,4,41,10,4,36,70,.235,.288,.614 Betanct: 311,28, 74, 14, 2, 5,30, 3, 2, 9, 30, .238,.256,.600 Hardy: 255,36, 71, 15, 0,13,34, 0, 0,21, 48, .278,.335,.825 Tot vs JJ:817,85,193,28,12,9,71,13,6,45,100,.236,.275,.609 Injuries are the thing with JJ but 2 errors and more HR's than the last two SS's in 562 fewer AB's. Way to go JJ.
  5. Good for JJ. He's been moved from his last two places because of a better alternative. The Brewers have moved on from that choice and Minne's guy has been not as good as JJ. 2 errors and 13 HR's looks pretty good at SS. Baltimore likes JJ so much they moved him to leadoff after batting him late for so long. Go gettum!
  6. Thanks hawing I did send you a PM that would be great. Joe had a blast throughout the entire deal. The excitement, the nerves, the tailgate, having 17 relatives in town then it is over so quickly. I told him to soak it all in and he did but wishes he would have thrown the ball a bit harder. Think back to when you were 12. Any specifice memories? Joe will maintain this one. Thanks all for all the great comments.
  7. Back when Bud brought baseball back to Milwaukee he asked my dad if he would help him sell season tix since my dad owned a Real Estate company and dealt with plenty of transferrees. He loved baseball and the Brewers appreciated his efforts by giving him second row seats. When my dad retired in 92 my brother and I took over the tix and I believe there are around 90 original season ticket holders still being season tix holders. The Brewers do some nice things for us as my dad threw out the first pitch around 4 yrs ago when he was pretty far along with alzheimers but he went right up to the top of the mound and fired it in. I have a great rep for the Brewers who called me up and asked me if I wanted to do it. After getting excited I got even more excited when my thoughts went away from me and I asked Bill if my 12 yr old could do it. Bill was all for it. When I picked up my son at school that day I asked him how his day was and he said, good. I said not as well as it will be in a minute. He basically said huh then asked what's up Dad. I said the Brewers called and asked me to throw out the first pitch and Joe said, that's so cool dad. I told him I said no I couldn't do it but how about my 12 yr old son. The look in my kid's eyes I will remember forever. He was so excited then said let's go to the high school field so he can throw off the longer mound, (45' in little league). Bottom line I could have done it but I am so happy I can relay the thrill down to my kid and I am so proud my dad loved the Brewers so much creating this great opportunity for our entire family to share. Thanks for all the great thoughts.
  8. Thanks all. I don't know if he will check the runner at first since we don't have lead offs in 11-12 yr old little league. I imagine he will be pretty jacked up and want to throw a rocket. Hopefully he doesn't overthrow but.....whatever happens will be cool. He has cousins coming in from Tennessee, Madison, LaX and Chippawah Falls for this. Thanks for all the thoughts.
  9. Next Sunday @ 1 PM before the Mets/Crew game my 12 yr old son will be throwing out the first pitch. If you are there cheer him on. He's in little league so the mound is 45' for him so since we found out he's been practicing at 60'6". Pretty cool, I'm really looking forward to it.
  10. logan too extreme for me. So a 10 yr old is as good as Peterson or Maddux? Of course not but there are degrees of help but to what extent is the question imo.
  11. ennder just curious if you think any pitching coach effects a team? Getting their message across? Comfort with the players? Teaching skills? How long do they have to go for what Maddux has done as for the cause and effect for both teams to garner praise? Another year? Two- Four more? Just curious.
  12. It is too early this year to label it but Ender your points are valid for some pitchers being almost the same, not better. Let's look at Bush: era: 08: 4.18 09: 6.38 10: 4.24 Looks like he is back. whip: 08: 1.114 09: 1.469 10: 1.463 This yr is similar to last's so far Just to look deeper: walks + hits per 9 innings 08: 7.9 + 2.3 = 10.2 09: 10.3 + 2.9 = 13.2 10: 9.1 + 4.0 = 13.1 Bush's is starting out this yr like last in whip. I agree that coaches and managers get too much blame and credit but we brought Peterson in to hopefully do the job Maddux is doing.
  13. Sure ender you can go back and look at things and it might take a different look so let's do it: 24: 6.94 25; 4.06 26: 3.03 27: 6.02 28: 2.81 29: 1.51 Millwood btw is doing great this year with a 3.26 era so his luck must be continueing. ender who has improved since Maddux left? You want to throw in Wilson's 3.03 which would be his 3rd lowest era behind the two with Maddux. His other 3 without Maddux were 6.02, 4.06 and 6.94. Texas pitcher's love Maddux and it shows. Can the Brewers say that? As for a boatload of money being paid we pay Peterson 600,000 a year, the same amt Maddux gets in Texas!
  14. Interesting comparison btwn the teams is that CJ Wilson and Manny Parra: 2008: Parra: 4.39 era 1.542 whip age 25 2009: Parra: 6.36 era: 1.829 whip age 26 2010: Parra: 4.42 era: 1.418 whip age 27 2008: Wilson: 6.02 era: 1.64 whip age 27 2009: Wilson: 2.81 era: 1.33 whip age 28 2010: Wilson: 1.51 era: 1.104 whip age 29 Kevin Milwood went from a 9-10 5.07 era pre Maddux to a 13-10 3.67 It wasn't only the young one's since Maddux got them to get ahead of the count. Throw strikes early so you don't have to later. Who has improved for the Brewers in the post Maddux era? It was
  15. I got the 8.75 off a google search so I stand corrected. That is the way Oakland is looking at this deal with him. Hopefully he pitches well then they lose him to FA as a type A or a contender would want him since you know the motto: When healthy.... They don't say that about many pitchers and who on the Brewers do they say that about. I understand not taking the risk but I believe we would be a better team with Sheets over Davis.
  16. Do you think Sheets would help the Brewers more this year than Doug Davis will? 8.75 mil for Davis and 10 mil for Sheets for a 1 yr contract where Oakland can trade him and get 2 top picks. I agree it was a tough decision but Melvin could have brought Sheets back. Some times you need to move on but....
  17. I have two for most games but do have access to 4 or 5 with some notice.
  18. Some of you have been there but we have two seats in the 2nd row right next to the visitor's on deck circle available. Plenty all season long so PM if you are interested in any specific game.
  19. Maybe Counsell can go to Yankee stadium and get a career high in HR's with that short RF porch. Good for you Craig!
  20. Wow Counsell gets a hit and moves the runner over to third with the big guns coming up.
  21. OH yeah my bad. Last home game for my tickets. He did K but it was a 6 pitch K!
  22. Last home game for a local kid how criminal for Macha to do that?
  23. I didn't know it was best out of nine then. Shoeless was 0-4 in game 1 when they lost 9-1. Hmmm ? Game 2 Black Sox lost 4-2 and Shoeless was 3-4. Did he not get the memo? Game 4 loss 2-0 and Shoeless was 1-4 double and 3 PO's Game 5 loss 5-0 Shoeless 0-4 Game 8 loss 10-5 Shoeless was 2-5 3 RBI's HR and 2B So in the 5 losses Shoeless was 6-21 .286 12 TB No errors Series totals: .375/.294/..563/ .956 no errors which was better than his total for the season: .351/.422/.506/.928 That would have been great seeing Eddie Cicotte have two errors in one game and Schalk yell at the players throwing it. FYI, the White Sox were trying to win Game 8 after getting stiffed by the gamblers. They just happened to lose. Just for context. Game 1 First AB, Top of Second, Score 1 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe reaches on SS error to lead off inning. Eventually scores. Second AB, Top of 4th, Score 1 - 1, Shoeless Joe grounds out to SS with 1 out, no one on. Third AB, Top of 6th, Score 6 - 1 Reds, Shoeless Joe grounds out to 1B with runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out. (Now 0 for 1 with RISP in thrown games.) Fourth AB, Top of 9th, Score 9 - 1 Reds, Shoeless Joe flies out to deep right. Game 2 First AB, Top of 2nd, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe doubled to lead off and was left stranded out there, by his teammates who were in on the fix. Second AB, Top of 4th, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe singled to left with Buck Weaver on first. His teammates left both of them stranded. Third AB, Top of 6th, Score 3 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe struck out looking with Buck Weaver on 2nd with one out. (Now 0 for 2 with RISP in thrown games.) Fourth AB, Top of 8th, Score 3 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe reached on infield single to 1B with 2 out, no one on. Game 4 First AB, Bottom of 2nd, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe doubled to lead off and was left stranded out there, by his teammates who were in on the fix. Second AB, Bottom of 3rd, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe reached on an error by the second baseman with a runner on 2nd and 2 outs. (Now 0 for 3 with RISP in thrown games.) Third AB, Bottom of 6th, Score 2 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe grounds out to SS to leadoff inning. Fourth AB, Bottom of 8th, Score 2 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe strikes out with 1 out, noone on. Game 5 First AB, Bottom of 1st, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe pops out to 3B, with runner on 3B and 1 out. (Now 0 for 4 with RISP in thrown games.) Second AB, Bottom of 4th, Score 0 - 0, Shoeless Joe grounds out to Pitcher with 1 out, noone on. Third AB, Bottom of 7th, Score 4 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe grounds out to 2B to leadoff inning. Fourth AB, Bottom of 9th, Score 5 - 0 Reds, Shoeless Joe grounds out to 2B to end game with runner on 3B. (Finishes 0 for 5 with RISP in thrown games.) Obviously, we'll never know what was in Shoeless Joe's head, but in context there's nothing in the thrown games that suggests that he wasn't in on the fix. A couple of hits to keep it looking non-obvious and a lot of groundouts, isn't a particularly impressive showing. He didn't even hit the ball out of the infield with RISP in fixed games. Robert That is some impressive information. The first risp situation would be considered a productive out. I wonder if Shoeless was told that the fix wasn't on in the other games. Only 1 homer in the series and it was by Jackson. Why it would have been nice to see this was also because two of the risp situations Jackson got on by errors. Did he hustle? Was it a smash? Was he consistantly hitting the ball harder than the others? It would be very interesting.
  25. I would love to see the year that would never be matched. 73 CS 73 CG's, 59-12 1.38 era 448 K's 98 BB's 678.2 IP's Old Hoss Radbourne! 1884 29 PRO NL 59 12 .831 1.38 75 73 2 73 11 1 678.2 528 216 104 18 98 441 0 0 34 2672 205 0.922 7.0 0.2 1.3 5.8 4.50 The 1919 World Series to see how Shoeless Joe Jackson played: He hit .375 and got thrown out of baseball.
