  1. Manny Parra is scheduled to go that night.
  2. I think it took about a week before Gwynn signed before he started playing. I believe he spent 3-5 days in Beloit with the team before seeing time on the field. Plus, let's not get our hopes up too much. We have no idea how reliable this guy's source is. Thanks, Patrick. I know it's just a "rumor" until the deal is done, but its hard not to get a little excited about seeing him in Beloit before the end of the year. That lineup has done a pretty good job the last two months, and adding Weeks should make it that much better. Its wonderful to have a team so close contending for a playoff birth.
  3. Yeah, everyone said he'd start in Beloit- but would he play there this year signing so late? Can anyone did thru the achives and find out how long after Gwynn signed before he played?
  4. So... for strictly selfish reasons, is there any chance we'd see him in Beloit before the end of August, if this were indeed true? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  5. From Brewerfan.net FAQ: How many players can be on the major league roster? A team's roster may consist of 40 players until Opening Day, when the number must be reduced to 25 until September 1st, when it again becomes 40. I'd guess once the rosters are expanded to 40 players, Martinez would be eligable without his arby clock starting. Meaning he could be in Milwaukee as early as September 1.
  6. A starting pitcher who isn't ready to start in the majors is, for the most part, better off starting every five days at Indy than getting an inning or two here or there.
  7. With this talk of Weeks getting a 2004 ML contract, is there any chance of him signing in 2003 and getting some playing time while 2004 is his first option year?
  8. I don't know the rules for sure, but my guess is that he would be added to the 40 and 25 man rosters if he signed a major league contract. If the above is true, the biggest drawback would be his addition to the 40 man roster, giving him, in effect, three years to make it. How does "optioning" work? Generally, after three (3) professional seasons, a player must be protected on a club?s 40-man roster or he becomes eligible for the Rule 5 draft (see below). Once a player is added to a club?s 40-man roster, the club then has three (3) available option years during which they can place him on ?optional assignment? to a minor league club. A player can be sent up and down as many times as the club so chooses within those three seasons. If a player is not sent to the minors during a year, an option is NOT used. Once a player is ?out of options?, he must clear ?waivers? in order to be sent down again. From Brewerfan.net FAQ I guess I, too, am curious about any other ramifications.
  9. Please, National League, adopt the designated hitter rule... No more... seriously, we all know you like the DH, and we know you'd like to have them amend the rule so that Milwaukee can take advantage of all those players. And, there is no need for you to re-state your position. I get it already. Thanks.
  10. Fortunately, there is no permanent record of the bf.net draft-day chat, and all the stupid things I said about Mr. Fielder and the wasted pick. In my defense, I was a moron. You're not the only one who said stuff like that. PriceFielderCanRake said some silly things too. I wonder what happened to that guy? It's a lot easier to admit being wrong when its being wrong about somebody failing...
  11. I believe I saw Michael and Chris (madbad and Blazinwings) pass below our seats when they were on their way out of the stadium before the fireworks, but I didn't get the chance to talk to either. At least I assume it was them since one (Chris, I believe) was wearing a brewerfan.com T-Shirt and old-school Brewer hat. So even if you're unaware of it, someone might actually be watching you. That was us. We were sitting at the picnic tables along the LF line so that Jessica could flirt with Dennis Sarfte. Because we had a three hour drive that night, we didn't stay for the fireworks, but did watch them from our car. We went to both the Friday and Saturday games, and Gwynn and Fielder really stood out. They seem to have a lot in common at the plate in that they are very patient and they have a good idea of exactly what they want to do at the plate. Gwynn really hits the ball a lot harder than I thought he would. The doubles that he hit on Friday and Saturday were all hard hit balls to ever part of the field. I commented to Michael that we might not get a chance to see Gwynn again when we go back in August. I guess we'll see. Fielder hit the ball hard all weekend and he continues to impress me with his defense. He had three or four plays over the weekend in the field that were really impressive. I am more and more convinced that he's not going to be a liability in the field. All in all, I had a blast this weekend. We'll be back on August 3.
  12. Regardless of that, this is how all these ballplayers should do it. And if I were Rickie Weeks, the number two pick in the baseball draft, you can bet my agent would get me everything he could within reason. How many contracts did Brien Taylor sign? Antoine Williamson? Kenny Felder? And extra few hundred thousand dollars might not seem like a lot, but it might come in handy in five years if Weeks is out of baseball. If I was involved in some sort of accident that mean a one hundred thousand dollar plus settlement, I'd have a lawyer there at every turn, because there is no such thing as an injury settlement agent. Now, if its September 1 and he still isn't signed, and they are fighting over 50,000 dollars, then the guy needs to be realistic. Until then, he's not hurting his development or the Brewers.
  13. Ray Allen didn't need an agent because he signed the for the max allowed by the NBA CBA. He didn't need an agent to get any more money, because he couldn't get any more. His use of a lawyer was to ensure there wasn't some wording in the contract that would cost him money. The situation doesn't appear to be as applicable when there isn't a firm maximum like there is in the NBA.
  14. BELOIT: LHP Manny Parra at home vs. Battle Creek (Yankees), 7:00 PM; you're only going to get so many more chances to see Manny pitch in person -- who's going tonight? Madbad and I will be in Beloit on Friday and Saturday, but I can't make tonight. I seem to keep missing Parra and Wilhemsen every time they are scheduled to pitch. It looks like I'll miss them this tim around too.
  15. Can't you add an "Oh my god he still hasn't signed and its been x days since he has been drafted" counter and slap it on the front page of the site? That way none of us will have to do any math to figure out how much we should panic? Thanks.
  16. If you really want to do this, please, please put them all in one thread. Just edit the title everytime you add a new prediction.
  17. How is a three year veteran, a golden spikes/howser winner, a guy who hit over 470 twice a little rawer than other collegians? That's not my word, as I have never seen him play. And, trust me, its nothing personal against Weeks or anyone posting here. And, while his numbers are very good regardless of the league in which he played, that doesn't mean he isn't a bit raw offensively and hasn't been taking advantage of different talent than guys who play for USC or Texas or Miami. Cruise the message board and look at the reports that we have been getting. Based upon everything we have heard, Weeks is going to start in Beloit. If he tears the league up, then he'll probably get promoted. If he doesn't, he spends the year with the Snappers. That doesn't mean he won't make the jump to Huntsville next year. Its just plain too early to tell, and there is no need to rush him. Just to do a bit of comparing: Sheets appeared in two or three games of rookie ball before being moved to A+ his first season. Jenkins, too, started with the advanced rookie league team before spending most of his first year with the high A team. Even tho he got a taste of AA that first year, he still split his second year between high A and AA. Hammonds, another college guy, got to the majors his first year, if his stats are right. He's not coming to Milwaukee, and he's not the savior. So lets relax and be patient and enjoy the climb.
  18. Anyone remember when Fielder signed last year? I don't think it was any earlier than this. Anyways, from everything I have been hearing, Weeks won't make it to Huntsville this year. My best guess is he'll spend the year in Beloit, as he is a little rawer than most college players. I think the best one could hope for is that he tears up Beloit and maybe gets a late season call up to High Desert, sort of like we saw from Fielder last year in Ogden and Beloit. I'd much rather have him advance at his own pace and have Cruz and Ginter hold down second for an extra year than rush him. As it is, Hardy and Krynzel may just be too far ahead of those in Huntsville to keep the entire group together.
  19. So am I the only one hoping to see a switch to a four-man rotation that includes Rusch? Its the only way to catch San Diego.
  20. Some notes from Jack Z and Jim: - Overview -- Got guys who are good athletes, particularily guys who can run - Weeks -- Happy with Weeks drafting, wouldn't say if he like Young better (obviously) -- Weeks can play CF, SS or 2B, will probably stick at second - Anthony Gwynn -- Good instincts (bloodlines) -- Very athletic -- Best player on the board (not a need pick) Part II - Louis Palmisano -- Very athletic -- Good frame, strength and power -- Combination need/best player available - College Players with top three -- Not a factor -- Some players will move quickly to AA - Charlie Fermaint -- Plays LF and CF -- Very athletic - Brian Opdyke -- Very solid - Pitching -- Difficult to get good position guys later in draft -- Easier to get pitchers later I missed the remainder of the discussion due to work stuff, including a discussion on Draft and Follow signings and potential Draft and Follows for next year. Jack Z also seemed go not want to praise the players too much for fear it might increase their barganing position. Interesting conversation overall.
  21. Is he the left handed 950 OPS catcher we have all been searching for?
  22. dhonks you are usually right on the money with your posts but this one suprises me. Do you really think Weeks or Young can be passed over for Sleeth? I am going to speak for DHonks and let him correct me if I am wrong. Reading his post, I think he's for drafting Young if he is there, but not Weeks, simply because he favors HS position players and college pitchers over college position players. Please note the players in bold were added by me and were not in DHonks original post. I've kind of hoped for Sleeth since I heard Loewen signed. I would like to either draft a college pitcher [sleeth] or high school position player [Young], although I have to say that Alliston sounds awefully tempting. I don't have any problems drafting Weeks, because he is a consenus top-2 pick. But, there is something about him that reminds of Kenny Felder. Nothing I can put my finger on, which is reason number 818 I'd never make a good GM. But that picks worries me.
  23. Vote Kenny Felder 2003 Paid for by Kenny Felder 2003 Bill Scott Treasurer
  24. Beloit pitching coach Rich Sauveur, one of Randy Johnson's teammates in the minor leagues, said that Wilhelmsen throws just as hard as Johnson did at this age, only with better control. Given my reputation, is it OK to say I really, really, really like this guy? In a platonic, baseball sorta way.
  25. Wild one for the Stars. Huntsville loses 3-2 on a 2-run walkoff homerun given up by Mike Adams with two outs in the 9th.. Hendrickson goes two to start, gives up three hits, no walks and Ks one. In the fifth, Hart is credited with a hit, even tho the ball struck Krynzel as he was running between second and third. In the buttom of the inning, the Diamond Jaxx appearantly scored the tying run, except the runner missed third base and was called out. Knox, Krynzel and Hart each went 2-4. More to from MassBrew later today.
