  1. Not to mention the fact that he'd be blocking our only hope to develop a great young player in Yi who could possibly team with Bogut to make this team actually decent.
  2. Announcers...those guys are usually spot on. C'mon. I find it funny how many casual fans think they're more qualified or know more than the guys who've played or coached the game. I know it's kinda the "cool" thing to do, to rip on the announcers, but I really like the guys CBS has right now. The kid from Western KY had 3 guys in his face and was fading away on his game winner. Hardly what I'd call a good look or even well run play. How was that a fade away? More to the point, how was that not a well run play? They had the in-bounder sprinting down the coach, they drew the defense in, and he got a fairly open shot. Because three guys jumped up in a useless attempt to block the shot doesn't mean they almost got it. They really weren't that close.
  3. Don't forget to add Vlad to that list. He's been banged up all camp. That team is old, and they've had a hellish spring losing Escobar for the year and Lackey for the first chunk of the season. Matthews cashed in on a career year, as did Hunter last off-season. I don't know how you can be so convinced that team will keep it together with the age and injury concerns. The Angels are a good team when healthy, but they're not healthy at all.
  4. Not anymore than you can look at Run Differential an"projections" and call it a day.
  5. Well I guess, but c'mon. The quotes around "inside source" should have been pretty clear. Also, it's Ender...I may not agree with him sometimes, but he doesn't really come out of left field with nonsense like that.
  6. I think the argument is that will allow us to re-sign Sheets. I think Sheets would rather stay here having a vested interest in the city. The question obviously is if we'll pay him. We made a lot of money last year, have a ton coming off the books this year, and Mark A has said time and time again that they'd go out and spend 15 million on an ace if there was one out there to spend it on. I have to think that we'd be willing to spend that extra 4 million dollars to retain him. And with CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett, John Lackey, John Smotlz, Brad Penny, Oliver Perez and Mark Mulder all up for Free Agency this summer, I could definitely see Sheets re-signing with us. I don't think that it's a sure thing by any means, but I think this is just about the best year for him to be a Free Agent as far as we're concerned. Of that list, I'd have to place him at best 4th behind Burnett, Lackey and obviously CC, and possibly behind Smotlz and Penny. Smotlz for the short term. Hell, maybe we could bring him in for a year. Speaking of which, I really like the reliever market for next season with Lyon and Cruz from the D-backs on it. Maybe that's why Melvin only wanted the one year 10 million rather than the 2 year 16 million dollar deal for Gange in addition to all the other 1 year deals he signed relievers to. Perhaps he saw a potential long term fix coming up next off-season.
  7. Thanks for pointing that out. I had no idea. No problem. I guess I thought with all the other factually incorrect statement you made regarding Suppan, I needed to point that out. By the way, when you say "the only thing he does is throw 200 innings a year and keep you in games", that's a bit comical. The "only" thing he's does? Did you think we were getting Johan Santana when we got him? Look, to call him "crap" for us last season is ridiculous. He was average for us while he made 7 million dollars. It was one season, a season in which he was probably our more reliable starter the second half of the season behind Gallardo. A 4.12 ERA the second half of the year, even with a .339 BABIP is not "crap". Very wishful thinking. 2 years 25 million for "just throwing 200 innings and keeping you in the game"? Yea, I guess that a team like the Mets would NEVER want a pitcher like that.
  8. Yea, that's about what I'd have, but with Bush and Villy flipped. I think that Villy's change is better than Bush's curve, and Villanueva's slider is better than Bush's change. I give Bush the edge in his fastball, but it's a small one, so I still think that Villy gets the nod. I also think that Villy's got better command. Yea, Bush doesn't walk anyone, but he gets way too much of the plate whereas Villy is on the black quite a bit more. And actually, just on pure talent, I think I'd have to switch Gallardo and Parra. Parra's got a rare set of skills with his change that's got very good movement on it, he's got better velocity, and a beautiful curve when it's on. I go Sheets Parra Gallardo Villanueva Bush Suppan
  9. I seem to remember people getting awfully upset at the suggestion that Vargas would make the rotation over Villy or Parra. Why don't we wait until they actually start and put out a roster rather than go off of what people are guessing the roster may be to get upset about it?
  10. It takes a lot of pitchers a little while to figure it out, especially power lefties. That he hasn't turned into a great at 25 certainly doesn't mean he never will. By the way, what exactly makes you say "his mental makeup is for the birds"? That seems like an awfully strong statement to make for a guy who's wild.
  11. I'll bet you a case of beer that Lilly's ERA is significantly lower than 5. Define significantly? I could see him having a 4.65 or so ERA. I do think that he's better than Hill however, so I don't agree with Ender's comments earlier, but that's not really the point here. Fact is, I think Lilly will be at about 4.20, but it wouldn't shock me to see him struggle this year.
  12. He has Johan Santana stuff. He's really got that type of potential. I think we're past the point of hoping that he can develop that, but anytime someone's got that much ability, it's never a bad idea to try and pick him up and hope he can put it together in AAA. To be honest, I'd rather have him over McClung, but that's not going to happen. Still, I'd pay him the big league minimum to pitch in AAA.
  13. Agreed. People were really talking about Gallardo having number 2 like stuff, but his poise has helped elevate him to ace status, but I think sometimes we forget just how good that curve of his really is(sheets that is). Again, not talking about value, or durability, just pure talent, it has to be Sheets.
  14. I'll take ours. I think ours is better than theres right now, and I think ours has a lot of upside. Sheets vs Zambrano I'll take Sheets when healthy. Obviously that's been questionable the last couple years, but he's in a walk year, so I'll take him. Gallardo vs Lilly I'll take Gallardo over Lilly by a lot. Suppan vs Hill I'll call Hill their number 3, because he really is, he's just not pitching game 3(which sucks because I think we'd light him up). So, even though I'm not a big Hill guy, they get the edge there, though Suppan is a good second half guy. Villanueva vs Dempster I'll take Villy. Parra vs Marquis/Lieber Again, I'll take Parra, this time by a lot. Overall, I give us the edge in 4 of the 5, but Sheets and Zambrano is even, and if Sheets goes down, that obviously changes it. I just like ours a lot more than I think most will. Good old fashion power pitchers surrounding Villy and Suppan, and Villy's pretty solid as well.
  15. They're not a good team, but dumping Redd's not going to make them any better. It's not his fault he's not good enough to be a number 1 on a winning NBA team, it's the role he's been cast in. And beyond that, the guys they need to dump, they can't dump. Mo's still up in the air for me. He's improved every year, but we haven't won with him. Is that his fault? I don't know. But Simmons, Gads....those guys aren't going anywhere. I guess we just have to hope that we get a impact guy in this draft, or that Yi can turn into a real impact player. Here's hoping that Beasley goes to the Bucks after we luck out and win the first pick.
  16. Of course you do. By the way, he just turned 33, and he's got virtually no injury concerns, and isn't the type that's going to regress significantly with age, much less the next couple years. But why would they "deserve it"? Absolute worst case scenario, they've got to pay 5 million of his 25 remaining bringing it to a very reasonable 10 over 2 years. I doubt they need to do that though. Teams will have interest in a proven big game pitcher who's an innings eater.
  17. How strongly can you feel about a guy in the lower levels who's never going to make a big league team? Just because he's Yost's son?
  18. It's clear our management doesn't have a clue. Our fans always seem to have a better understanding of our players than the guys who are paid to be experts Maybe this is part of the problem. That you honestly believe this. Man, can we PLEASE at least wait until the season starts before the non-stop whining(I'd like to use a different word here) starts up again? We all knew that Chad Moeller was awful, and yet Ned Yost would never pinch hit for him when the game was on the line. Most managers don't PH for their catcher leaving them with only one. This is something that some fans that know more than experts don't readily acknowledge. Now, it's the same thing with the whole Villanueva situation. The exact reason I've argued the entire time that we should wait until a decision is made rather than going by what bloggers have to say about it. When we all are watching the Cubs play in October, are we supposed to look back and say "Yippee, we missed the playoffs for the 26th year in a row, but hey, at least we have great "depth" in our rotation"? There's no gun to your head. Beauty of living here, you can root for whoever you want. They sell Cubs shirts in Milwaukee as well.
  19. We'll see. Hernandez and Bedard coming into their primes, Sexon having hopefully a bounce back year, Kenji's a good catcher, Ichiro's one of the best players in the world, Ibanez and some other nice position players and a pretty solid staff now with a couple potential impact young arms on their way up. Which team can't they beat? The Angles look very average without Escobar and Lackey, and the Rangers and A's? I'll bet between the White Sox and the Mariners, you get 170 wins.
  20. First of all, he doesn't make 42 million a season. If you're going to use his salary, then use his yearly salary. He made I believe about 7 million last year. He definitely earned that. As for why we're going to be able to trade him? Because there will always be a market for pitchers who you know will give you 200 innings, will keep you in the game, and who is reliable. As I've said, I expect the Mets to be the team asking about him with Pedro and Perez being FA's this year. He'd fit in perfectly behind Santana in Shea Stadium. And it's only a 2 year commitment. But if not them, the Phillies who always need pitching, and want GB pitchers in that park, the M's, or about 5-6 other teams I could see going after him. How about the Dodgers with Lowe and Penny being FA's? I just don't think it's going to be that hard to deal him. We're probably not going to get much back, but I think we'll still be able to move him.
  21. This isn't 2007. If we're just going to use run differential from last year to determine which teams are going to be good this year, this isn't going to be a very fun thread, and we can just post those on here. 88 times last year the Mariners finished the game with more runs. They've added an ace, and had a few players have awful years. The Angles already have their ace and their number 2 out, the A's have all but given up, and the Rangers are awful. I don't really think that Hernandez and Bedard have to "brilliant" for them to do "anything".
  22. Yea, I think he's worth more than a middling SP'er, but I was referring to your comment about him being the center piece in a Sheets type deal which to me, does suggest he and a filler for Sheets. I like Teagarden, but BB rates don't really mean a whole lot to me until a guy moves beyond A ball, and right now, he's got 29 games in AA. Not to mention, he hasn't been able to catch everyday because he's had Tommy John surgery, so I just don't think he's worthy of that type of package. I do like him though.
  23. Right. They're about the same age. But DLR has more than one pitch, and and is a lefty. And I never said that he was younger than McClung by a significant margin, just that DLR himself is still pretty young meaning it's not a totally outrageous idea to want to bring DLR back into the fold. I agree it's not going to happen, but I like him a lot more than McClung.
  24. Yea, I forgot about Wieters. But the Rangers seem convinced that he'll stick at C. I think reports of his demise as a prospect are greatly exaggerated. I also think that his bat should be pretty good wherever he is.
